"An entire series can be done on SimCity."
That's a series I'd happily watch.
I'm dying to know what happened behind the disaster that was Simcity. You know, the one that killed Maxis? What the hell happened? I've never bought a AAA game before that caused the publisher to give me a free AAA game as an apology. And EA claims it was ALL on Maxis.
@@Edax_Royeaux im not sure Clint has done one completely on sim city and the fall of maxis, but I've definitely watched one on UA-cam if not ... But I really think LGR has a history vid of maxis and some background to it
@@gman102formyspace Do you remember what the Simcity fall of Maxis video was called?
Me too!
You must be a happy viewer at this point.
Clint you know if you do a video series about all the variations and impact of Sim City, we will watch it.
I want him to do SimAnt. ;)
Was going to say the same thing.
He actually did a pretty comprehensive video on the series back in 2013.
We will watch it *repeatedly
Yes please, would love to see this!
"There is also a graph window for referencing your overall progress or lack thereof, which is awesome if you love graphs. And - I mean- if you're into a game like Simcity, you probably are."
I feel personally attacked. I had to switch from graphing on my work computer to type this...
Hard to believe I played this on a submarine in 1992. I used a nice PC in the torpedo room using a pirated (shit-maybe I bought it then) game that everyone loved. We also played some King's Quest down submerged.
kaptaintrips this is true, I was the submarine
Should've played some CODENAME: ICEMAN too, it was like King's Quest but the storyline was on a sub. Maybe the last thing you needed tho, haha.
There's literally no reason this couldn't have happened
Should have played 688 attack sub hahaha
I had SIM City Classic and 688 at home, but when I deployed I carried a copy of Harpoon on 3.5" Floppy and used a PC in the Ships Library to play on. This was 91-93 time frame on the USS Eisenhower.
Im amazed they managed to make that game run without needing permanent internet conection
If Maxis even attempts to do something so blatantly BS modders would just create a mod within two weeks to allow offline play. Thankfully we live in a world where Maxis wasn't bought out by a morally corrupt cooperation like EA that would force them to do this.
I didn't realize internet connections had something to do with morals.
@Cameron Moore At least we have Cities: Skylines to be able to play a real city builder instead of a Sims 3 Neighborhood generator.
@serpico I get that you can't play if the servers go down. You also can't eat at a restaurant if they have to unexpectally close. You just eat somewhere else and hopefully don't go on an unhinged rant about the restaurant being closed.
@EnriqueLovinLife I was making an analogy. I thought that was obvious.
The first SimCity I remember playing was on NES or SNES. My wife rented it for me early 1990s.
Maxis was founded the same year I met the girl who became my wife. My soulmate. She got me SimCity 2000 at Walmart around 1996. She passed away Jan 3 a few weeks back. I cant live without her yet here I am. I love you Little One.
And Interplay ruled!!
so sad to hear that man :(
I'm sorry for your loss
So sorry to hear this.
She'll be in your memories and in your heart forever! Take your time for sorrow - you are in darkness for now but there will be light again some day. Take care 🕯
Stargate Atlantis Fuck yeah! I coulda been in MENSA
Edit: Just read your full comment, wish you well. If only I could wish you more seasons of Stargate Atlantis.
I used Sim City 2000 to teach kids how to build and manage complex, interconnected systems.
I promise you, that was far more impactful and probably stuck with them more than learning straight from a textbook. Good on you for making it hands-on and interactive!
because textbooks are garbage
In the early 90's when I was in elementary school we got to play Sim City 2000 on our Macintosh computers in the computer lab, along with the other math/learning games of that time.
I actually learned how to use computer with Sim CIty 2000 back in elementary school!
@@jevogroni4829Yeah, garbage. Without that garbage, there would be no technology to allow you to post that statement. Just because you personally don't like something, doesn't make it bad.
Yes, Simcity is a fun game that teached a lot of kids the very very very basic of City planning (it's like one single university lecture amount), but if you take the percentage of kids that actually used that knowledge to become city planners, it's probably the most ineffective leaning method that ever existed.
So maybe think twice about calling textbooks garbage as one of these might be the reason you survive a disease at one point.
Clint, you're something special. You are one of the reasons i no longer watch tv. Content creators like you are the future and you are a pioneer with select others. I still daydream about how to fix the SimCity card game. It has so much potential. It needed square cards to really simulate blocks.

thought i was the only person who got that for xmas
I picked up a single pack of Sim City CCG long ago. Never played a game nor learned how it worked though.
Hey it's you City Beautiful!
At the same time Sim City showed me how complex and fragile a city can be and how symbiotic it is, it also helped to improve my way of thinking about everything. Not only cities
I started to be more analytic, looking at stuff trying to think the back-end of things. What was behind something in order to get to where it was.
Not only Sim City, of course, but it definitely had it part on that
By the way, missed your videos, Clint
I have fond memories of this game. Usually at 3 am and saying, "just one more year"
Absolutely...me too!! cool days
same but a year was too short, plus it didn't end in a round number, so until the next decade starts was my measure
I never knew where the "klapaucius" cheat came from, that's so interesting!
Wow, 30 years! That last sentence hit me in the gut. My aging gut.
I always loved SIM City. It's sad what happened to the franchise
EA Bombs hard this sim ...
At least we have Cities:Skyline.
They decided to go 3d instead of using elaborate beautiful 2d sprites. :(

EDIT: And Mods
At the end of this video I said to myself, “LGR, this is why I love your content.“
I’m late to the party, but I’ve been playing Cities Skylines for the last few weeks, and it takes me right back to my days playing SimCity in the 90s. This video also
takes me back, thanks!
I have such an emotional connection to this game that the GRAPHICS MODE SELECTION SCREEN at 7:53 makes my heart beat harder.
The other game that does that to me is the original Civilization. I was so young I had no idea what I was doing, but I loved planning and developing my cities. Such a joy to play with.
Oh, the memories.
Who other than LGR would go to the incredible lengths of actually obtaining the obscure books that inspired SC
I bought a copy of A Pattern Language after watching this video when it dropped and it is FASCINATING.
Remember a friend in school showing me this in the early 90s. There were only 3 kids allowed to touch the school (not classroom) computer back then and we were 2 of them. So many memories of causing carnage for fun. Truly one of the all time great titles 😍
Hahaha I first fixed a computer that a teacher didn't know how to use when I was in 1st grade. It was one of those black and green Apple IIs with Odell Lake.
I was first introduced to SimCity (2000 version) in a tech class. My friends and I would play the hell out of that game. We loved it so much we ran to the store and purchased our own copies. Some years later, Streets of SimCity came along and I bought that as well. I loved being able to drive through my own creations. It wasn't too shabby but it did have its faults. Oddly enough, when looking for a review of it, I stumbled upon Clint's video in 2010 and I've been watching him ever since. And for that, I am grateful.
I had SimCopter and my cousin had Streets and they were both a ton of fun despite their faults. I want a game where I can build a city and then it becomes a GTA map.
9 Year Old Cyberbully school bus? What kind of state funded school did you go to?
For a brief while in my school, they had one Windows 95 computer. I got into a lot of trouble after I changed all the desktop icon names to "Internet Explorer" and changed the icons to the IE Logo. The school thought I had irreversibly damaged their investment.
Holy *crap*, you just reminded me of the Interplay FMV version! It came in the Interplay All-Nighter Anthology, a big multi-disc collection with Sim City FMV, Cyberia, Blackthorne, Frankenstein, Castles, *all four* Battle Chesses, and a Descent II demo! I was six years old, and those discs were the only things I played for like a YEAR. Crazy the memories you just brought rushing back..
I was in love with the SNES version. In that version traffic could be avoided entirely by building only mass transit; no roads.
That works on PC too. My dad always would build only rails.
Mario Monument!
I still play snes version😂
Love the SNES version, it's the one I grew up with. The first version I played was the DOS version on my dad's work PC with a monochromatic display but when I got my SNES I quickly got that version. Its music, art style, bonus buildings etc are so amazing.
Another incredible episode! I am a geographer and I have some texts and proposals precisely discussing the importance of SimCity and other tools in the construction of the concepts of Geographic Space, citizenship and technologies. What they call SmartCity was already there! Tks!
We had a computer class in my CT middle school where the whole class would play Sim City 2000 and get graded on how your city did. It got cut eventually though.
Hey LGR, I had quite a bad case of flu recently, and watching all your videos brought a lot of joy to me, and I would like to thank you for making these awesome, funny and cheesy videos!

That is why this channel is one of the best. It's so just comfy and easy to watch.
@Random UA-cam Idiot I did that too!
This video brought back nostalgic memories of playing the game on my CGA monitor. It was the first game that I pulled an all nighter on. My father woke up at 6am and ordered me to bed.
Traffic problems can literally be fixed by replacing every single road tile with rail. I do remember that much.
And if you put powerlines over the road they never broke, even with no road funding...
i almost failed the 3rd grade because of my simcity addiction. #worth
¯\_(ツ)_/¯ mine was Roller Coaster Tycoon lol
@@Blood-PawWerewolf lol rollercoaster tycon 1 or 2 was really fun :)) i dont remember wich one i played... i still play Transport Tycoon Deluxe tho... openttd.org
In 4th grade I always ran home and finished my homework super fast to spent the whole afternoon playing sik city 4 and the sims 2
Mine was Diablo 2. Memories.
Oh man, this game. I remember one specific scenario very well: the nuclear meltdown one. You were supposed to manage the city up until the meltdown happened, and then afterwards it challenged you to recover as best you could before a deadline.
But even as a kid, I was eagerly looking for ways to "break the system", and found it on this scenario: simply bulldoze all the nuclear power plants and replace them with coal ones at the beginning of the scenario. If I remember correctly, there are five of them, a few of which are placed out at the edge of the map.
When the game goes to trigger the nuclear meltdown, it goes "hey wait a minute, there's no nuclear power plants!" and grants you an instant victory.
i teared up on this. i was 10-11 when my brother brought home the SNES version and soooo many countless hours playing it... this brought me right back! i wanna play it again now. the gardening analogy i definitely understand.
It always surprises me that whenever I see top 20 or whatever lists for SNES games, Sim City is never mentioned. I loved that game.
It's because Sim City is a game used to play on Amiga or PC with a mouse. The SNES port was nice too but not in the top 20 of SNES games.
@@MrSnaetch it was for me ☺️
One of the oldest PC games I bought for myself and still own was SimCity 2000. Still probably my favorite entry of the series.
Same here, although I still have Sim Copter & Sim Driver. Both came in set with Sim City 2000. I loved using my custom built cities with Copter & Driver. I actually used cheat codes to give MORE money to start with.
If you can get your hands on Copter & Driver, and still have the ability to play, I HIGHLY recommend them....

Never knew the original had Godzilla on the cover. The Sim series was such an integral part of 90’s and early 2000’s gaming. I spent the most time with Sim Tower...finally getting the chapel was such an accomplishment
Hey look who's here!
izzynobre haaaayyyy
Sim Tower is the GOAT. Wish they would make a new one or somebody like the Cities: Skylines devs to make a version.
Braddah Spliff I’d buy a new one like that in a heartbeat
I love LGR oldschool game reviews. The guy really understands and appreciates many early PC titles.
Do you remember the smart city mod? Around 1993? iirc, it was built into the game later.
The SNES version was hands down my favorite, I can't be the only one.
I just downloaded the ROM and already spent like 6 hours playing lol
Yes, my dad and I built competing cities, but we never did well without using the taxes cheat.
Hell yeah! The soundtrack alone puts it above every other version
I just downloaded the room
What about the NES version

Your lighting game is getting very strong.
Clint, another great retrospective!! I’m always waiting for these, so much dedication and so much fun
I remember playing Simcity on my friend's computer. I filled the entire map with a city and had a profit. I was 11 and it was the coolest thing ever. He also had this Indiana Jones game that I can't remember the name of. I just remember at one point you touch some cat statues and one was real and scared Indiana down the stairs.
EDIT: Looked it up!! It was indiana jones fate of atlantis
Fate of Atlantis has to be one of the best games ever. Me and my siblings spent a week or two on what felt like a movie the entire time! Some puzzles were awfully hard though :D
Congrats on a million Clint! Been here forever. You're great.
When I was a kid I would go right to the game aisle and just read the back of boxes until my parents got done with whatever “boring” shopping they were doing. The Simcity box for some reason always drew my attention, despite already owning it.
I hope you know the effort you put into your content is very appreciated!! Great video. Feeling super nostalgic
Downright captivating video. I'm particularly enthused over your recollections of how it felt to be playing SimCity back in the day - I had a similar feeling playing Sims 2 for the first time in '09.
I poured so many hours into the sequal SimCity 4. When I was 10 - 12 years old I would play it from sun up to sun down. It was the first computer game that I bought new from Walmart. A few years later it became a large reason why I began watching UA-cam and most importantly LGR.
This was one of the earlier games I played. Had to play it in monochrome. Thanks for the review and the memories.
Awesome retrospective. You're THE place for retro game content and have been improving it constantly.
Oh wow the way the colourless glow from your lovely old CRT monitor is incredible.
I remember buying my copy at Radio Shack, I was eight years old and saved my money for what felt like forever.
Damn, I was 20 when I first played this. I am old.
I was 8yrs old when I played this on our computer!

Michael500ca not if you are 21 or so
Clint, I love these retrospective's that you do, this and the sims, love them. Great vid.
Well researched, thought out and explained. Very high quality video, 10/10.
The fact that people went "SimCity isn't a REEEEEEAAAL game!!!!" should tell you exactly how much stock to put in any attempt to put games in narrow boxes and use definitions to exclude things.
Many people have different definitions of words, but I'm still of the opinion that any definition that rules out Sim City and similar games, is just not a valid definition.
You seem to forget that computer games were for kids (and nerds) back then. It was not just about definition of games, but also about their place in society. These "Software Toys™" and other stuff was about elevated stuff above being a simple game. The same type of stuff is happening now, but the opposite way. Simple games are treated as high art because we have abandoned true art for children's toys.
@@4jp that's a very pretentious way to say you don't like something lol
Game or not, it was a lot of fun. Who cares what other people think, right?
Yup and heck even Minecraft isn't a 'real game then'. Limiting what kinds of games can be made is exactly the thing to avoid. There are still people who only know games to be violent, gory and sexualized.
What a throwback. You are the gold standard of quality.
Excellent video! I revisited Sim City (via the Win 3.1 Classic version) recently and had a lot of fun with it, and it spurred me to check out some of the later ones I missed like 2000 and 3000. I think I have the most fondness for the SNES version thanks to its updated visuals and relaxing music, but playing with a keyboard and mouse via the PC version is great.
The methodical style of unpacking and describing everything one at a time is so satisfying and tranquil. Really a joy to watch
SimCity is by far my all time favorite game. It’s a massive shame what EA did with SimCity (2013).
Cities Skylines just doesn’t fill the same hole that SimCity managed to fill.
SimCity 4 is where it's at. Prefer it much over CS.
Just play Sim City 3.000 Unlimited. Build/design your own houses and what not and watch the time pass by ;)
@@vonshroom2068 lol I never understood the salt water an fresh water mechanic in SimCity 3000. SC3000 is just so unintuitive to me 😂
If anything, the whole SimCity 2013 debacle got the then CEO of EA, John Riccitiello, fired.
Im glad Cities:Skylines devs came in to carry on the Simcity legacy since EA ruined the entire franchise like they do eveyrthing is
Microtransactions is killing EA.
Pooper Scooper micro transactions are great in games, they give you the option to change your gameplay and give the game a longer lease of life, the issue is companies like EA are abusing them making games unplayable and unenjoyable if you don’t fork out, Micro transactions aren’t killing EA, EA is killing Micro transactions. Until people stop falling for it then EA will never die.
Pooper Scooper also, love the name!
It's a shame that C:S is such a shallow game though. I still prefer SC4 over it because there is so much more going on.
But then Cities:Skylines is no different from what EA is doing now. Tons of DLCs :/
Hey Clint, thanks for posting this. I know it's not your first video about SimCity, but I feel just as passionate about it as you do. I really look forward to any future videos you might have about it.

Hey Clint! You should give Odd Realm a try, maybe do a review of it here. It's only 10 bucks on steam, it's already pretty good and the developer is super responsive.
It's a colony management sim with graphics that are reminiscent of DOS games (the sprites remind me of Lemmings), and the music is like something out of old Squaresoft games.

Oh man does anyone else remember playing this in the school computer lab during classes? There was a cheat shift FUND or something and you could get more money but if you do it many times monsters and disasters would soon follow lol. Considering how ancient those computers were this is a pretty sophisticated game with some animations too!
SimCity was my #1 slot when it came to hours spent in front of my "Spectra" XT clone (later self-upgraded to AT using a m/b found in a cardboard bin at a garage sale). After I finally managed to convince my mom to get me a contemporary 486 machine, that spot got stolen by Chris Sawyer's Transport Tycoon Deluxe. These two games were THE defining games on my childhood and adolescence.
