First album of theirs I listened to was Villains. I really liked it, and after listening to like clockwork I was impressed. I have yet to get into their other albums yet tho.
Dylan Haire you got a bunch of good stuff in their back catalog to listen to then. Their earlier albums like songs for the deaf, rated r, and Queens of the Stone Age are some of their best in my opinion. They all sound pretty different from each other though so there’s something for all tastes.
Yes my friend, thank you for the dive into Villains. Queens of the stone age / Josh Homme can do no wrong in my eyes. Disappointed there was no love for Villains of Circumstance, though. My favourite song off the whole record.
Well, after the first listen of Villains I thought: 'Well thats not such good like other albums'. But this album needs time, now its one of my favourite. Songs like Fortress and Head like a Hounted House are amazing.
Haunted house is a song that I've always wanted to hear from them. It's like QOTSA's take on a modern punk song with a kind of EODM sassy to it. My favorite cut on Villians by a longshot.
QOTSA could have any producer and I would still trust the Homme to come through nicely. I trust his musical judgement entirely so if he wants a producer, give him that producer!
I usually don't completely appreciate a QOTSA album till years later. Except for songs for the deaf, but I didn't realize that I didn't fully appreciate it till I really paid attention and heard it in a different way. I was totally listening with "deaf" ears for years
Well I loved it from the beginning (but not as much as Like Clockwork) but it still grows on me too, which is the most Qotsa thing ever - they always force you to look wider on music. I feel like Josh's intention is to separate fanbase from guys that stick too much to some music genres. The line "I don't like it, cause Nick's not on it" from one of Villains promotion videos is quite real, there are so many people stuck in that era, or even guys that downrate everything since Kyuss. The thing I find interesting is how many songs on this album are, i don't know how to call it, hiding its' true nature? The Way You Used To Do at first sounds too normal/mainstream for a Qotsa song but as you discover 30s swing in it, you realise, how good and clever it is. Feet Don't Fail Me - of course the intro, The Evil Has Landed main riff wants us to believe it's faster than it really is, head Like A Haunted House is ... weird.... in a good way. Honestly only Fortress is the song I don't love that much, mostly cause of lyrics - i just don't feel it (obviously it wasn't written for me to feel it). Anyway, it's been two years and Josh is suspiciously silent right now... just how he was before Post Pop Depression... and before Villains...
I still can't really get into this album. But, that said, it took years for me to get into Era Vulgaris, which prior to Villains was my least favourite... But now it's in my Top 3 for QOTSA. Villains could some day grow on me. Anyway, great video. If you haven't checked out Failure's Fantastic Planet yet, I strongly recommend it. A hidden space-grunge gem of the 90s that's only recently getting the respect it deserves. One of its songs has been selected for the playlist for NASA's next trip to the moon. Also, their live line-up for a time featured Troy Van Leeuwen, who has been a long term member of QOTSA.
First of all, thank you for this and all the other magnificent videos you produce. They really adds a lot to me. Secondly, I dunno if you're into this stuff, but have you ever heard Tom Waits? I think he would give a very good video for the "Understanding" series.
I am a huge QOTSA fan and thought I'd know all of the things in this video, but I didnt realize the part about not hearing music in his head anymore after the NDE.. That's interesting.
It's weird because I feel like 'I Appear Missing' was one of the most honest and sincere songs I've ever heard. That supposedly came after he lost his muse. Then when he still heard music in his head, he wrote a lot more songs about banging and coke. Just cracks me up to think about. Like there's no way he would have made room on one of his records for 'fortress' but now he seems so proud of it and genuinely Hopes it means anything to his kids.

Regular John is so in your face though. I feel like it's such a great intro to the band even though 'How to handle a rope' feels like the perfect album opener. Its catchy but at the same time it feels like an early warmup song that was never really meant to be a single. I love it when albums open up with those and then the second song is their main single.

Great video. But not all of John Carpenter's film were scored by the director himself. The 1982 reboot of THE THING was scored by Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone.
Like Clockwork had a lot of production as well. For me personally, it's too much production and I don't like that, but it's a trend now in mainstream rock and I think they wanted to reach that audience as well. I hope that know they tried that and reached they'll try something different, 'cause I personally hate the trend in mainstream rock which is "overproduction (mostly to cover the bland music), minimal use of guitar, very catchy/pop/melodic". They are not bad albums at all though.
I never was a huge Queens fan but this album is just very good in my opinion. Idk I really like this album but I somehow can't get really deeper into their discography... sadly
I appreciate this album a bit more now. But i'm still considering it their worst album. But worst for Qotsa's standards is pretty good compared to other bands.
Critics and some fans know nothing, if you begin by comparing an album that it's all about reinventing the band's sound to the previous one is because you think that the group is just filling some space in the music industry and they can't do something outside their area. It's like "Oh! rated R, SFTD, Like a clockwork were so good, every album of these dudes should be just like that! and obviously that's a big no. Villains, yes, it can be more "laid back", "uptempo" or whatever but just because you expected it to sound as your way doesn't make it bad, musically and overall the album is a masterpiece, if it would have came from another band everyone would be sucking it's package.
egg dude I seriously wonder if any of the fans that keeps saying that like a parrot actually knows something about mixing, 'cause people that know something about it (sound engineers) actually say it's not bad mixed at all.
Lmfao the album doesn't have a strong concept and the songwriting is subpar. To say that the album would be as good as their best records if Ronson didn't produce it is just stupid as fuck.
Servando Flores how do you know it's bad mixed then? "Because you feel it"? C'mon. I bet a dumb youtuber said that and now you're all repeating that. If you ask people that actually know something about it they'll tell you it's not badly mixed, so you're probably wrong don't you think? I also bet that Josh since he's producer himself knows much better than us when something is well mixed or not, and he would never release something badly mixed.
Tone / Timbre and mixing are very different things, not many people seem to know that. The mixing on this record is great and more transparent than ever (imho). The tone and production style took some while for me personnaly to get into but by now I love the record. Definitely a grower.
The sound of Mark Ronson, spoiled the whole album, I notice that the live version of the songs they work, but really Mark ruined the whole record for me
Carlos Javier Tiznado I see this comments often under Villains videos, but they are by people that show to know nothing about mixing. If you ask people that work in that field for real they'll tell you that it isn't badly mixed at all :) I wonder if fans keep saying it like parrots because a stupid youtuber said that.
@@nickn2794 there is not a bad mix as they say, that is why I do say sound, kind like his sound signature, if you go thru their catalog I won't dare to say like for example Eric Valentine is better that Joe Barresi both have different sound signatures and the albums in question are very different is just that Mark Ronson sound choices did not make sense for me at all, which is personal taste, there is cases like for example in Relationship of Command from At The Drive In that I did love what Andy Wallace did in the Mixing but Omar hated it, so bottom line is either you listen to it and enjoy it or just disregard it and skip the album or pick the songs that you kind of enjoy which in case of Villans, for me I don't even listen to them at all, just the live version. As far as being a repetitive theme that they talk about the mix or Mark well everyone have their own opinion but with QOTSA they have a diverse catalogue and sound signatures in every album. I do enjoy them all except Villans so in my conclusion it points out to Mark, because I don't enjoy his choices and sound signature in the rest of his work, so thank you Mark, for making me skip Villans all together.
Carlos Javier Tiznado ok I understand now, but I think that was exactly what Homme wanted to do, exactly how he wanted the record to sound. I'm not a big fan of Villains either but I wouldn't say it's a bad album, just less special than other things they've done. I hope they'll skip overproduction for the next records, and I hope Homme returns to produce himself.
Was surprised at the satanic overtones of the albums cover and the video of THE WAY..... Not liking that aspect, shit they even wore horns in the video.... wtf!!! The Illuminati has every band we’ve liked

Great video. But not all of John Carpenter's film were scored by the director himself. The 1982 reboot of THE THING was scored by Oscar-winning composer Ennio Morricone.
They hired Mark Ronson to help them make a quality album. They were a live staple but believed finished as songwriters. This record proved otherwise.
Villains amazes me more and more as i listen to it.... it truly is QOTSA at their absolute best.
I never was a huge Queens fan but this album is just very good in my opinion. Idk I really like this album but I somehow can't get really deeper into their discography... sadly
This album was fucking great
Understanding Muse?
Please
I hope David Blowis the III. will become a permanent member of QOTSA.
Haha that would be interesting. But i think he's just a random gag for the radio show.
Yeah, of course he‘s just an alter ego of Josh.
Please make a video about the first qotsa songs like born to hula and rickshaw
I sure will. I absolutely love Born To Hula. Especially the version with Kyuss
@@LieLikesMusic thanks for listening dude. It's awesome to hear real feedback from a good content creator.
Great video!
To me this album was a seamless transition from Like Clockwork.
Long live qotsa
Hey lie, what are your thoughts on the new tool song?
I love it. Especially the chorus. But some of the instruments feel sort of flat. Still super excited to hear the rest of the album though.
Lie Likes Music I agree a hundred percent!
It sounds like Era Vulgaris’ Little Sister 😏 but it’s my least listened to QOTSA album.
Understanding David Berman please. RIP.
I thought you didn't like this album? Did you change your mind?
I appreciate this album a bit more now. But i'm still considering it their worst album. But worst for Qotsa's standards is pretty good compared to other bands.
perfect!
Will the Web Class be reopening or is there a waiting list?
I love your videos but wish you would give more love to the early days
Oh just you wait. The first three records are my favorites. So there's plenty more videos about the "early days" coming.
Lie Likes Music Understanding Kyuss
@@Commander1keller that'd be so cool
The album sounded like a B Sides album from every project Josh has been involved in that was produced to sound vaguely cohesive.
The production of the album really lets it down
I’ve remember you were disappointed with this album, and now you’ve blessed us with this video. No one knows lmao
THE VIDEO HAS LANDED!
ENJOY
nice
Dude you should review unkle - restless (feat. Josh homme)
That's such an awesome track. But i don't know if there would be enough for me to talk about in terms of that one song
@@LieLikesMusic maybe like all the songs that john colabed in? I dunno the song is a hidden jem
Where has the tame impala vid gone?
Only 1:27 Min. in & I fell asleep! Thx!
Right? This shit is so boring. I'm only here cause QOTSA is my favorite band
Villains, yes, it can be more "laid back", "uptempo" or whatever but just because you expected it to sound as your way doesn't make it bad, musically and overall the album is a masterpiece, if it would have came from another band everyone would be sucking it's package.
more a tempo?
Is that metronome flipping me off?
its the best rock album ever made. i never ever remember in my entire life listening to songs so many times like in this record
An intro to Tash Sultana
Understanding Stone Temple Pilots
This album has a lot of undeserved hate
Brookunnaass won the race to be firstt
Eyyyyy! As always dude
Close to first
Yupp very close
Ah, the bad one
Mark Ronson is a hack and the mixing significantly lowered the quality of the album. Could have been SFTD or LC tier.
egg dude I seriously wonder if any of the fans that keeps saying that like a parrot actually knows something about mixing, 'cause people that know something about it (sound engineers) actually say it's not bad mixed at all.
@@nickn2794 a good mix should translate without having to know about engineering
By far their worst, but hey the previous one was like clockwork, how can you top that
The sound of Mark Ronson, spoiled the whole album, I notice that the live version of the songs they work, but really Mark ruined the whole record for me
Carlos Javier Tiznado I see this comments often under Villains videos, but they are by people that show to know nothing about mixing.
You don’t have to keep saying “end quote”, we get it
stories behind the album sounds cool but i still hate this album...
That's alright, i'm not a big fan of it either.
people need to stop shitting on villains and era vulgaris
Get a new narrator
You think i can just snap my fingers and get a narrator like that? Thanks for the feedback anyways
Villains was terrible. I don't care how much you break it down, it doesn't make the overall product any good.
Saying quote and end quote every time you quote seems unnecessary and is annoying to listen to tbh
u didn't even like it came out. u lose bruh
Was surprised at the satanic overtones of the albums cover and the video of THE WAY.....
Not liking that aspect, shit they even wore horns in the video.... wtf!!!
The Illuminati has every band we’ve liked
The album is utter shite. I’ve tried so much to dig it but it sucks big time. Ronson’s production has neutered the band; fark, even Homme’s missus rocks out harder than him nowadays.
This album sucked.
Garbage album by an otherwise great band.
That album kinda sucked.
