- Queens of the Stone Age - Making of Songs For The Deaf
Songs for the Deaf is the third studio album by American rock band Queens of the Stone Age. Released on August 27, 2002, the album features Foo Fighters and former Nirvana member Dave Grohl on drums. Like their other albums, Songs for the Deaf has a large number of guest musicians, a signature of the band's releases. The album garnered critical acclaim, and the band earned its first gold record certification in the United States. One million copies of the album were sold in Europe, earning the band a platinum certification from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) in 2008. Songs for the Deaf is loosely considered a concept album, taking the listener on a drive through the California desert from Los Angeles to Joshua Tree while tuning into radio stations from towns along the way, such as Banning and Chino Hills. This was the last studio album to feature Nick Oliveri on bass.

Grohl wrote his best drumming ever for this
The intro and chorus from song for the dead is just killer
A part of the beginning is taken directly from a black flag song
The entirety of song for the deads drumming is incredible

Tied with TCV
That wouldnt have been hard as Kurt Cobain wrote all the drum parts for Nevermind, i'm sure Grohl was only involved in 1 or 2 songs from In Utero. (but yeah not including his Foo Fighters stuff, which maybe Hawkins wrote a lot too 'drum parts')
“But play it with less finesse” words to live by
Especially with Queens and Kyuss! Best to have a good mix of fucking around/feel and playing with finesse.
@@jofall91 because music isnt a f en sport competition, its an art, and art goes beyond most peoples understanding especially guitarists
@@smkxodnwbwkdns8369 I completely agree! Especially nowadays and I believe I’m paraphrasing something I heard Mustaine say in an interview, most guitarists focus too much on technique and flashy playing and ignore the song writing element to the whole thing. I prefer Homme’s more simple yet chaotic approach at guitar. And he’s a fantastic song writer, singer and player.
@@jofall91 the physical difficulty of playing something is irrelevant. its the sound that matters. that neither excludes complexity nor favors it. i enjoy the ramones and johnny thunders as much as i enjoy jimi hendrix and pantera, or bach.

Leave the cd when you sell the car so you pass it down.
@@CatcherOfBass I might just do that actually, if I ever either sell the car OR pass it along to another family member or something. It's the only CD of mine that has never left the changer over the years, and we're talking over a decade now. Masterpiece of an album.

RIP Lanegan, the most expensive back up vocalist of the 00's. I'm so glad they got him not only in the album, but touring as well.
Probably saw them 20 times with him. They were once the greatest rock band in the world.

Absolutely. The production approach is fucking _perfect_ for the material. As an album, it is definitely the band's high water mark, and unmatched by other rock acts of the period.
I kind of prefer rated r but deaf at its best is extremely powerful
For me, this carries the same magic as watching footage of The Beatles in the studio; pure genius. Songs for the deaf definitely 1 of the top 5 hard rock albums ever recorded.

I think we all do.
Why? To make the same record again and again?
@@CirclingtheFringes Just because it'd be the same lineup doesn't mean they could only make one type of record. There's plenty of bands that make a lot of different types of albums with its original members.

Really cool that Josh is so able to explain exactly what he wants so clearly when orchestrating Song for the Dead- it ended up being exactly what he was asking for. That’s a great band leader.
I also love watching Nick and Dave interact musically. Lanegan’s is a legend / and how cool would it be to have Troy in your band and hang with him / he looks so cool in the shades lol .

SONGS FOR THE DEAF! NOT DEAD
No he means Songs for the Dead. Best drumming. Ever.
Amazing how it shows them working out all those stops and starts on Song for the Dead! Best hard rock album ever hands down in my opinion. Great to see Lanegan doing his thing, a huge loss to music. Was obsessed with this when it came out and 19 at the time so really influenced me musically. Thankyou to Homme, Oliveri, Grohl, Lanegan and all the other great people on this landmark recording.
Dave is just KILLING IT on this record, love that snare tone too
Lanegan is so good with qotsa and homme is the coolest dude on the planet
Amazing to see how it was done. My favourite album ever.
Only Josh Homme can actually tell Dave Freakin Grohl how to play drums lmao
That's because Dave isn't really a well trained musician and Josh is. He's admitted this numerous times.
I wouldn't say josh is well trained lol I think he only had some polka lessons and then learned the rest along the way
Josh and Kurt Cobain
@@DustinDollinsShinBonelol he’s literally just telling him to play it shittier

Popped it in the car and cranked it!
A couple tracks in I wasn't paying attention to how fast I was going and ended up getting a speeding ticket... thankfully didn't lose my license... 115mph ... worth it
Damn dude 😅 well i guess that's how u know it's a solid album
I too have only revived one speeding fine in my life and it's because I was playing millionaire
Thats not as cool as you think that sounds
I remember going to the shops when they opened at 9am to buy it the day it came out. It became my driving album. I would get through nearly all of it on the way to my girlfriend's house. The album is a masterpiece
I was lost in the early aughts and didn't have my bearings until this album showed up. It spoke in basic terms, to every facet of my messed up life. It was the soundtrack to not growing up and growing up at the same time.
I don't think QOTSA will ever be able to come close to the masterpiece that this album is, but nonetheless I still love every single album. Maybe this one just holds more regard as it was the first album I got by them shortly after coming out and I had no idea what a ride I was in for as a young boy.
I think they peaked with Lullabies.
i think like clockwork comes pretty close, it’s a lot more moody and introspective but i think the production, musicianship, and songwriting matches songs for the deaf pound for pound.
Like Clockwork gang
Like Clockwork... and In Times New Roman are the bands best overall albums.

The largest interview takes place at Slims in SF. The part showing the band on the staircase and the concert filmed from the side is also Slims. I was at that concert and managed to get Dave Grohl drumsticks ❤
Such a badass concept album and I throw that term around lightly when complimenting music. Such a dangerous album to drive to lol
I first heard this when I was in Australia and it was played by all the radio stations. When I got home to good ol Blighty, I bought the Album.
1:15 hurts a lot. Rest in Peace, the both of ya.
That’s Alain, not Mark
I know that's Alain, I meant the fact it's Natasha and then Mark right after. Hanging Tree is one of their best compositions and seeing some of the important players in it are no longer with us, it's sad.
I do get the confusion though, this was before Alain went full egg mode and still had his Cornell-do
The pole in front of Nick on that stage was kind of foreshadowing
Explain?
@@kodykindhart8230 well with the pole in front of him on that stage you couldn't really see him. And now that hes been kicked out of the band you cant see him at all.
This album is their monsterpiece
Dave snuck “Slip It In” beat at 7:11 as a tribute to Bill Stevenson
I love that beat...I like to play it every time I’m behind some drums, it’s such a fun beat.😁
6:07 when guitarists explain to the drummer what to play, it basically always sounds as nonsensical as this...
xD
.. but he's a drummer himself though
It’s also really hard to make something sound worse. Specially when music is so naturally gifted to him.
Rock drumming (and drummers), by nature, are borderline nonsensical. So that made perfect sense.
When the singer says- "Do that thing....with the cymbal...." not so much.
not as dumb as when drummers try to tell guitarists what to play tho
Yup I'm always talking to my drummer like that, but he always gets me.
Never seen this before - this is super cool - love seeing the isolated parts become a whole! Thanks!
Josh looks like a rebellious rich kid
and seems like kind of a pompous douchebag... which is what rich kids grow up to be
@@aneurysm341 He seems like that because he's at that age where he kind of started to act like Dean Martin and other idols of his. Nevertheless, i've never seen him being condescending or anything like that. I think the guy is just passionate about what he does, and with a huge portfolio like his i think he's entitled to act however he wants... We can only dream to do what he did and does. Grohl's drumming is absolutely fantastic.
YES! I used to own this back in the day! So glad to see it again after all these years! This footage is the reason we know why "fucked up" is yelled before the second chorus on Song for the Dead- I just can't quite figure whether that was Mark or Nick.
Mark probably
It’s mark saying “Fuck It!”
nick’s idea, mark’s role
Easily one of my favourite albums of all time
This is definitely one of my favorite records of all time. The greatness of Songs for the Deaf lies in making old and abandoned sounds appear in another light, synthetic and extravagant, combined with the genius of Homme, a perverse soul full of the slow flavor of the desert. The secret to this success was the perception of the melody in the penetrating territory of stoner/rock. What is most striking about Songs for the Deaf is the simple beauty of the songs, psychedelic but also rich in melody.
Awesome! Rest in peace Natasha!
What a great experience see these guys behind the scenes cool stuff and a good band 🤘

Great piece of film! I haven’t seen this in years. Best band ever.
I presume that were I to read up on the history of the band, I'd learn more about why Lanegan was almost non-existent in this video? Best lineup the band ever had ... and so brief.
It's reported that Lanegan has been clean for almost 20 years which is around the time of this album or a little after. So he probably wasn't feeling 100%.
I recently just listened to the audiobook of Sing Backwards and Weep, Mark Lanegan's memoir which he narrates himself. . . It pretty much entirely focuses on his life before Queens and his struggles with addiction. Really, really intense. Well worth checking out for any fans of his.

Original to a degree... There's a LOT of black Sabbath and stooges riffs he is blatantly lifting in these songs
@@callumferguson1834 careful he may kick you in the face for that
@@Not_Andrew_Huberman Kicks in camerawomen faces aside, Josh Homme is actually one of the greatest musicians ands composers of the last 20-something years. He's been making epic music that no one else was all along and anyone who denies this is just straight hating and I'll always tell them to clean out the earwax and go back and have a better second listen. Matter of fact, only musician I might love more than Josh Homme is Prince. There's a reason for that.
@@callumferguson1834 Josh Homme didn't even listen to Black Sabbath though. He gets that style of playing from starting out in Kyuss, a band full of guys influenced by Black Sabbath. Josh Homme himself though was a punk rocker, he knew nothing about Black Sabbath in his formative years. So no, you can't say he's ever blatantly ripping off Black Sabbath, and as far as The Stooges, that's just one of many bands Josh Homme is influenced by. Last time I checked it's quite okay in music to be influenced by your favorite music when learning from the greats and then doing your own thing with it.
