Creating the sixth Queens of the Stone Age record would be anything but easy. Following 2007’s Era Vulgaris, mastermind Josh Homme would take a six year break from the band -- producing the Arctic Monkeys’ third record (Humbug), playing in other bands like Eagles of Death Metal and Them Crooked Vultures, while also welcoming his second child. But in the fall of 2010, after developing an antibiotic-resistant staph infection, Homme was hospitalized for nearly two weeks. Then bedridden for a handful of months. Leaving the frontman to sink into a deep depression.
The singer and guitarist would later tell journalists that his heart had actually stopped during the surgery meant to rid his infection and that even after he was revived, he felt like a part of him had been left behind on the operating table. Lost and out of love with music, the turbulent process of assembling ...Like Clockwork would lead to quite possibly their best record yet, helping redefine the band’s signature style while documenting Homme’s personal journey of moving forward. Let’s explore The Tragedy Behind ...LIKE CLOCKWORK

Before you say I missed "I Sat By The Ocean" -- it didn't really contribute to the narrative but it does have an excellent hook and melody with some pretty cool harmonized guitars. It features some staple QOTSA lyricism: macho but emotional. What's your favourite track off ...Like Clockwork? And why is it "I Appear Missing"?
I deeply enjoy My God is The Sun, it's a great song and getting me jamming everytime.
Fairweather Friends for me. Just the riff playing over Josh crooning "and so are yooooou" is just finger licking good.
Honestly, probably the title track. While it’s true that it’s the least QOTSA-sounding song, it had so much impact on me when i listened to the album in order for the first time. With the proper context the song feels so raw and almost confessional like Homme’s done hiding behind his masculinity in songs like Smooth Sailing and I Sat By The Ocean.
There isn’t a bad song on the album, but to me, Kalopsia is such an awesome slow burner. It’s the definition of a perfect song.
im stuck between the first and last track, since one is very dark and grinding while the other one is incredibly emotional and somber
“Era Vulgaris” and “uninspired” are two words that should never be in the same sentence together
but... but look what you just did! 😋
“Era Vulgaris” is not “uninspired” at all. There. And it’s the truth.
What the fuck, what is he saying?? Era Vulgaris is perfect, every music is good.
It's their worst album with some of their best songs on it. I understand the "hate". I still love it though. It's an unbalanced release at the very least.
@@AlexHerlan you can't say that like some sort of a fact if the majority would totally disagree. Like, "for me it's" or "i feel like", but not "it's their worst album".... We fuckin love era vulgaris, and not just a few songs
It may not be their best, but calling Era Vulgaris "uninspired" is nuts. It's their weirdest and most unique record.
Facts
I mean god damn, personally I've never heard a song like Sick Sick Sick. It's straight up devil music and its fucking awesome
Agree era vulgaris is an unbelievable album. I actually did not like much like clockwork.
Weirdly Era Vulgaris is probably my second or third favorite album of theirs. I love its weird and unconventional sounds, and I'm Designer is still one of my favorite songs of theirs. Calling it uninspired seems silly.
Seeing Misfit Love 2008 live took QotSA from a band I barley paid any attention to - to my all time favourite band. The entire album is a banger!
I will tolerate no slander of Era Vulgaris. That beautiful, twisted, fucked up masterpiece is batshit genius
You're not lying. What a crafty masterpiece of oddball grooves and hooks. Misfit Love, Turnin on the screw, 3s and 7s. All amazing
Lullabies to paralyze is disappointing, Vulgaris is awesome
The dude just passed TCV by like it didn't happen. I call shenanigans.
Heh, first thought of this video was precisely that... Era Vulgaris is brilliant man.
@@ericvaughn1665 The lyrics in 3's and 7's are so fucking good.
The album feels like a perfect live rock show with the way the tracks are arranged.
And the amount of Era Vulgaris love in the comments is pleasing.
ikr? lmao as soon as he dissed it I commented that it was my fav album. After the video I'm reading these comments and I'm crackin~!
I find the harmony of so many fans of these guys one of the more inspiring fandoms in this life. funny how EV still gets bashed on despite all of the crowd's love for it though!
That Era Vulgaris diss hurt... It's such a great record.
My favorite album from QotSA
It’s not their best but it definitely rivals some of their other highly praised LP’s
@@shrewm same, idk how people listen to suture up your future and sick, sick, sick and think the record's bad
Yeah I’m not sure why he said it tarnished their reputation. That record definitely boosted their popularity. I remember music videos from Era Vulgaris being played all the time on music TV channels back when music channels were still a huge deal.
SFTD and EV are my 2 favorite Queens albums.
Songs For the Deaf may well be their "best" album, but it doesn't have I Appear Missing. What an epic.
All other albums sound weaker to me now, because none of them have I Appear Missing. Its a song so stunningly perfect that I need playing in my skull every moment of every day. I don't want life, I only want I Appear Missing.
@@existentialistremnant6231 try to re-listen Un-reborn again. kinda hits the same, at least for me
@@wuichovengeance Un-Reborn is the best QOTSA-esque track off of Villains, hands-down.
Hideaway's pretty great in an atypical QOTSA fashion, though... tough call between the two for best Villains track.
It has mosquito song tho
@@wuichovengeance nice, I'll have to check it out. Never listened to Villains before.
Mans casually calls EV their most uninspired record when Turnin on the Screw and Misfit Love are two of the most creative rock songs I’ve ever heard.
Idk EV is always a fun listen for me
EV is my favourite album of them, I love the vibes
Dude suture up your future is one their best tracks
@@konstantincvetanovic5357 100% agree. It’s my favorite track on there, but not the most representative of the album.
@Jay Sharp I just don’t get the hate. I wish I did but I don’t. It would be considered a masterpiece if any other rock band but Queens made it.
I find the hate that era vulgaris gets disturbing.
Same, It’s not “uninspired” just because you can’t get into it. It’s probably their most creative and original album ever. 9/10.
it's not bad, but it's not their best
Honestly I think we wouldn’t have had Them Crooked Vultures without this album and especially the track The Fun Machine, it’s banger after banger.
@@Lancelot30 it is not their most their most creative record at all. That is just bs. It is however, a solid album on it’s own. It just happens to be made by one of the rock bands of this millennium who have put out multiple albums that are better than it so it looks worse in comparison.
@@Candela115 tru that
Era Vulgaris has some of Homme's most creative songwriting. It's anything but "uninspired".
In December of 2015 I had a really bad accident on my high school swim team in which I broke my neck, drowned to death, got resuscitated, went to the icu for two weeks and ended up having to learn how to live life with a spinal chord injury. All this to say that I Appear Missing is not just representative of Josh Homme’s death experience but as a whole it captures the surreal feel of learning to appreciate life. This album is one of my favorites but specifically I Appear Missing for that reason. This album to me is about growth in every sense of the word. I hope whoever reads this is appreciating their life too.
Fuuucking hell
That's very positive of you Sir, keep your head up!
Dude your a badass
Wow, thanks for sharing. Hope you are doing well now.
This is one heck of a story. I really hope you're doing okay and I'm really glad you found something to relate to within this album. Best of luck to you and your health!
Era Vulgaris is brilliant. It took me many, full listen-
throughs to click with it. But it's a great, great record.
misfit love is such a good song
I listened to it in full yesterday for the first time in a while. It slaps
@@tuck3771 so good.
It has some of my favourite songs of theirs. Misfit Love, I’m Designer, Battery Acid, 3’s and 7’s. All excellent
@@Crampsam all favourites of mine, too. Along with Suture Up Your Future and River in the Road.
Just because you don't like it quite as much as their other albums, doesn't mean it's uninspired. EV to me is even more fun to listen than any of their other albums. Turnin' on the Screw, Misfit Love, I'm Designer and 3's and 7's are just examples of how thrilling EV can be.
Yeah, "uninspired" was a bit too much. Just because it wasn't fueled by feelings of misery it doesn't mean it's uninspired. EV has some of Josh's most creative songwriting ever.
Misfit Love is such a fucking banger! Specially the live version on the Henry Rollins show!
RUN, PIG, RUN. and..., not to mention. THE FUN MACHINE TOOK A SHIT AND DIED. one of their BEST LIVE SONGS, IF!!!. YOURE LUCKY ENOUGH TO SEE IT. only seen it live twice out of....26-27 shows now...
3s and 7s is one of the best songs he’s ever written imo.
I had no idea who QotSA was, I popped in the EV cd on my way to school... Turnin' on the Screw changed me.
Era Vulgaris is such an amazing beautiful album. It’s weird and unique and holds some of my favourite QOTSA songs
The best rock album of the last decade. There I said it.
I think it was hand cannot erase /steven wilson
Easily.
You did say the thing.
I personally prefer David Bowie’s Blackstar just because what his music meant to me and how the album is pretty much his goodbye. Like Clockwork is a solid second place
My favorite album (rock or otherwise) of the decade, probably all time
Second only to Songs For The Deaf, in terms of QOTSA albums.
Most bands suck by record 6. This however is a beautiful masterpiece.
I think most bands by record 6 aren’t relatable anymore, they talk about the same issues the working class face from the POV of a successful person, which unfortunately many of us aren’t and as a result, The underlying tone fails to transcend the song.
Got me thinking about other examples of 6th album masterpiece case, the best one I could imagine was Fugazi's The Argument. Also The Cure's Disintegration is their 7th record which shows true class
@@Georgeirfx you forgot Weezer’s 7th album
@@Georgeirfx excellent taste george, excellent
@@very025 It's not like I forgot about them, I just think (and many fans alike) their first 2 records are miles better than the rest and thus only they can be justifiably called masterpieces / best works
Era vulgaris is the most slept on album they’ve got. River in the road alone.
I've noticed everyone that shits on QOTSAS earlier work got into them at Like Clockwork or afterward. Some people cant hang with the raw brilliance of the earlier works I guess.
And unfortunately Lullabies too, without Little Sister or In My Head, not many casual listeners listen to the rest of the album, which is waaaaaaaay better than those two tracks
that song melts me as soon as the sirens start wailin'
@@gavinfitzhugh2697 i got into qotsa at villains and era vulgaris is one of my favourites by them. Most likely it's the ones who like their first 3 albums that won't like it
@@phillacroix8377 River in the road melts, and then Run, Pig, Run immediately manages to send chills down my spine
This album is one of the most emotionally cathartic albums I've ever heard. It's just fucking beautiful and perfect.
Probably my favorite QOTSA album, and it never gets less harrowing hearing about the production process and how it came to be. Josh Homme and the Queens of the Stone Age never cease to fascinate me, and I love the way that you present their content.
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE!!!! YOU ROCK MIDDLE 8!!!
Lol only comment he gave a lile to 😂
The greatest rock album of the 10's. Have been addicted to this album for forever.
best gift you can give yourself is being addicted to it
I've been listening to it non stop since release to this very day.
What a coincidence that I got massively into this album during when I was massively depressed also. I had no idea the main songwriter was also going through his own depression.
Hope it’s gotten better!
I never hesitate to list this in my top 10 albums of all time. It's so rare to have a contemporary album hit you as hard as this one did.
One of my favorite albums of all time. Good job for giving this one justice.
Era Vulgaris is a fantastic record. I’ll take it over Lullabies, Villains and the debut any day of the week
Sat by the Ocean is my favorite qotsa song. It's so damn good.
I was disappointed it didn’t get mentioned in the video. It’s my favorite by them as well and the best part of the album
Songs for the Dead and Like Clockwork, 2 of the best rock albums of the last 20 years and possibly all time. Fascinating how they sit on opposite ends of the rock album spectrum: one being a hard hitting tour de force rock epic and the other being a collection of amazingly written songs with not much tying them together sonically
It’s fun fact that Dave Grohl picked up the sticks for both. Just didn’t do all of Like Clockwork
Your video production is absolutely incredible. Your knowledge and clearly the research on each piece is unmatched by any other music channel I am aware of. How this channel doesn't have millions of subscribers is beyond me. Keep up the awesome work dude 👏
Vulgaris is my favorite queens album they’re at their most creative unique and free, such an amazing album!
The sheer amount of love for EV in the comments is fantastic to see. Also, this video is fantastic. This is the first of your videos I've seen, and covering my all time favorite band so well certainly makes me like you!
Every other comment (literally) is a defense of EV. Good to see.
I just want to add my love for Era Vulgaris, probably my favorite Queens album. The lyrics
especially are brilliant
Definitely their best album to date. I can listen to ...Like Clockwork all the through. As much I love Songs..., I can't say the same.
Agreed -- no skips on ...LC
I usually skip 6 shooter and hanging tree but nothing else
I find interludes and "skits" boring after a few listens. SFTD is stuffed with them. My favourite album by far is Rated R. The latest one with Ronson was fun too.
@@MineGames131 Hanging Tree is one of the best songs on that album. Lanegan slays.
@@MineGames131 I'm with you on Six Shooter because screamy Nick doesn't do it for me, but Hanging Tree? Man.
When I first heard this album I wasn’t all that into it but 5 years later I got deep into Queens of the Stone Age that I ended up checking this album out and man Like Clockwork is up there for me for one of the best albums QOTSA made
Same there bro. 5 years too by my first time listening to the album and just recently im fallin really deep intro all this beautiful album
I can't believe you think Era Vulgaris is uninspired. It's my favourite QOTSA album by a landslide.
I actually wrote a major research paper on this album my freshman year of high school. The prompt was to write about something that was under/over-appreciated. I wrote about how - at the time of the release of "...Like Clockwork"- Queens of the Stone Age were criminally under-appreciated band. While diving into the lyrics for this album and for this paper, I soon uncovered the awful things that Josh Homme went through. Absolutely nobody should have to go through what he did, but the fact that Josh came out of all of it with an album that was still relatable is beyond me.
This was my favorite QOTSA album before I started doing research for that paper, and it is still my favorite. The opportunity to really understand where these fantastic songs came from only deepened the experience of, and my love for this album.
PS - my favorite song is Kalopsia - Alex Turner contributed on the lyrics, and the way Josh belts out "I love you more than I can control" gets me every time
this album hit me so hard, that when i was a film student i wrote my final assigament based on it. It was called Kalopsia. This record means a lot to me. And Josh is one of my favourites musicians ever
The moment I see QOTSA, you bet I’m clicking right away
Rated R is what made me a QOTSA fanatic but Clockwork is their most musically beautiful and diverse album and once you learn the backstory behind its conceptualization it makes it that much more amazing.
Each album is different from their last. And Homme clearly wants that. Each one is unique and represents something new for the band. It’s just a shame people can’t appreciate that
I remember once he said about Lullabies that it couldn't be compared to Songs For The Deaf. He said it would be like comparing an orange to an old shoe.
Man, your edits are magnificient!
And LC is defo my favourite QOTSA album
Era vulgaris was the first qotsa album I listened to. I was 14 years old back then. It blew my mind. It is nothing like the music i had listened to and still today, i love it and crank the volume up every time I play it.
It got me back on drums. I should tattoo those lightbulbs on my arm...
the production and editing on this video was inspiring, great fonts, great colour.
One of THE best albums! Love your commentary and editing, always fun to learn more about your favorite music 🤘
I love this album so much! And I gotta say I love this video, the way you introduce the the songs, the narator and the editing was awesome, great job guys!!
Great video, but I would say Alain Johannes and Natasha were members of the band pretty much on the recording side of songs for the deaf, but on lullabies too, and on tour.
6:48 I am a HUGE fan of the band and didn't know Nick did backing vocals for If I Had a Tail! Great video, you learn something new every day.
Great vid! Really loving the visuals on this one
The production on your videos is crazy, keep up the great work
As always, a great video man, keep on going
Wow! What an amazing video. I’ve heard this album once and never thought that was so meaningful. Great album from the last decade indeed!
Dude, awesome video. Had me in tears, I've had my real struggles and this album helped me so very much. Cheers
They are one of if not my favorite band of all time, I got to know them when I was playing underground 2 at my friends house and the song in my head popped up, it was so energetic and cool that I fell in love with the band instantly. As a kid I did not understand the lyrics and all but as a grown up I appreciate them and awe on the bands uniqueness both in sound and messages they share with their audience. By the way can we appreciate how good this video was? The editing and narration, top notch! This was the first video and I subbed already! Good job :)
I'm going to give this album a new shot. Thank you for this video, it really helps digging into the lyrics and grasping the "spirit" of this music piece.
Like Clockwork is easily my favorite of their albums. Glad to see you make this video.
CONGRATS ON 500K!!!
I Always enjoy a well edited and great middle 8 video! 👍
This album changed my life. Can’t wait for their next album.
I bought it the day it came out and listened to it once a week for like 6 months. Still a start to finish perfect album.
Man you really don't like Era Vulgaris, do you? I agree that ...Like clockwork may be their best album, but Era will probably always be my personal favorite.
It's better than like clockwork, I think. It's dark and disturbed and that's what I like about it
@@kylegreen357 I just love the blend of distortion / dissonance and and harmony, especially on songs like I'm designer.
@@Loprey96 totally. It has a manic wonkiness that resonates with me. Turning the screw and Battery acid are my faves. I saw them on that tour too and they killed it. Josh went off on a rant on some guy in a g n r t shirt that was giving him the finger. He paused no one knows midsong to rip this guy apart and then continued the song haha
ERA is a class album.
Bloody superb band. Seeing them play the first album in full is possibly my fave gig of all time
Nah, songs for the deaf is their best. ...Like clockwork is a close second though.
Gosh, i LOVE your editing style, the fluidity beetween the themes and the explanations of everything. Insta-subbd, now i'm curious about "In times new Roman"
YEEEES! It' my third fave album of all time! Great job as always!
Era Vulgaris is better than people give them credit for, better than Lullaby for sure
I was agreeing with you until you added that last nasty bit. I couldn't disagree more - Lullaby is awesome!
I appear missing is a masterpiece.
Amazing edit
Lullabies might be my favorite Queens record but Clockwork is the one I have fondest memories of
Amazing video essay about one of the greatest rock records of the 21st century. I constantly go back and forth between this and SFTD for my favorite QOTSA album. Both are so perfect imo.
Era Vulgaris has grown on me since the first time I listened to it, it is an amazing example of an album that requires multiple listening experiences before it clicks.
Yeeeees. I swear, your music tastes are the best!
Your videos are amazing mate. Congrats. Top work.
This was really well done! More please!!
Video: "Era Vulgaris was uninspired"
Mark Ronson: "Hold my beer"
3's & 7's and misfit love alone are more "inspired" than any critic video ever
This is a great album. Thanks for the history lesson. Really enjoyed the video. Well done!
I didn't knew I needed this video until I watched it! ...like clockwork was really precious to me when it came out, so this fills the gap on why and when I hear it. Thank you!
It honestly shocking how good this album is
This album and strangers to ourselves by Modest Mouse helped me get through my divorce. Still one of my favorite albums
It was Lullabies to Paralyze & Good News for People who love bad news for me.
congrats on 500k subs!
This graphic design is amazing. Love the font combos!
Still think lullabies to paralyse is an underrated classic, so many great tracks, in the wolf, burn the witch.... Sound so different and fresh
Agreed. Definitely my favourite QOTSA album
In order of best:
1. Songs For The Deaf
2. ...Like Clockwork
3. Rated R
4. QOTSA
5. Lullabies To Paralyze
6. Era Vulgaris
7. Villains

This is my favorite by QOTSA and in my top ten of all time. This record helped me through the darkest time of my life and will be forever grateful to them for getting me through it. On first few listens, I didn't 'get it', but when it clicked, I was hooked forever.
I recall the nod to If I Had a Tail in the Songs for the Deaf video, been waiting for this for awhile, it’s what I subbed for!
What was so 'uninspired' about Era Vulgaris? I love it. Personally think one of their best records and way better than Clockwork.
It really isn't better than Clockwork. It just isn't.
My personal favorite from QOTSA
If you like Era Vulgaris, the title track actually got left off the US version of the LP and can be found on UA-cam or on the UK and Japan versions of the record. I think there was contract disputes with Interscope because It features Trent Reznor and in 2007 Trent was calling Interscope out as being greedy
You've really caught lightning in a bottle, Middle 8. Informative, entertaining and stylishly presented.
As always, +1 for you.
Okay, I've heard time and time again that the "died on the operating table" story ended up being a lie he told. I'm curious what the final say is on that.
Holy crap, I couldn't click fast enough! Been waiting since Songs for the Deaf for a ...Like Clockwork video!
Beautiful design work man!
Love the production and style of this video.
I think that Era is hard to listen and understand but once you go through some nasty and weird moments in your life, you are able to catch the sound and feel that twisted feeling it has.
Lets just all apreciate the fact that we live in time of a reborned macabre dark Elvis
YESSSSSSS ! thank you for making this !!!!!!
This video really deepened my listening, thank you!
QotSA might not have made every track a radio hit... And you might not like every track... But they never fail to kill it.
And they step it up every album.
First off, great job on the video. I don't think QotSA official could have done better on the artwork and presentation themselves.
I love every QotSA album up to and including this release (fan since Kyuss/QotSA). Era Vulgaris is great, didn't know it wasn't popular among fans. Now Villains.... that album just didn't do it for me. Feels more like Bowie than Homme.
Great video! Really interesting to hear what went behind this album. Could you possibly share what fonts you're using? The two main fonts for your visuals during this vid? They are so nice!
My God. Gave me a whole new look on the album. Thank you so much!
I would love to see you make a video about Peach Pit.
And how he lip syncs his own shows because he can't reproduce his falsetto live
Wait I'm thinking Passion Pit** my bad lmfao. Comment still stands regarding Passion Pit
I always thought If I Had A Tail would have been perfect for BoJack Horseman.
nice vids as allways, and my fav band of all time 🔥🔥🔥
Amazing video! The typography and motion are top-notch. And oh yeah, are you still interested in making that video about Phoebe Bridgers? I would love that.
