As a Queens fan this is a gift. Thanks.
Agreed.
Don't have to be a fan to take countless things away, but knowing what an absolute badass Josh is makes it that much more powerful.
This should be required "man card" viewing.
As a fan of both guys, this is a miracle.
Yeah, this really caught me off guard. I've been telling anyone that'll listen how great the new record is, and it's nice to see Josh pop on pods I would have never guessed he'd be on to promote it.
Wow, it's so amazing to see Homme (rock GOD) be so vulnerable and calm. He's definitely lived a life that hasn't always been as romantic as many of us dream life should be. So happy for him and his kids that he seems to be doing the work to stay clean and trying to maintain his mental and physical health. Hoping the cancer stays away. Watching his kids grow is obviously important to him. ❤❤
It took someone who barely knows anything about Josh to get him to open up and reveal absolutely everything. I’ve watched probably every interview that Josh has given in the last 20 years and this interview was the most honest, warm, sincere interview he’s ever given. Props to Neal for going “there” over and over, and props to Josh for obliging and exposing more of his beautiful soul to the world.
Yea, for years he always was very vague when speaking about his drug use by saying he had "issues with substances", but never being specific. It's shocking to hear him be so direct about it for the first time, so yes, this interview is the best he's ever done.
zane Lowes is pretty solid also
It seems like Josh enjoys comedy, is a Neil fan, and I love that a lot.
Not even Joe Rogan could
I’m 15 minutes into this interview and apart from Josh being a musically lyrically genius he is beyond being a problematic person wtf 😂
As a recovering addict , I’m blown away at how Josh explains the struggle. He’s spot on.
“Anger is a sword I hold in a hand that is hurt.” Writing that one down. So glad to hear an actual interview that isn’t,”so the new album…” The most open I’ve seen Josh in any interview.
With sincerity, I now understand why Josh kicked that female photographer. It's clear he regrets it. It's not good. no permission granted. but better understood. these talks can be quite positive. guests who articulate score higher on the Turing test.
Totally agree! Neal is a phenomenal interviewer that makes everyone comfortable to open up
😮😢😢😢😮
"lets finger this thing to death" is another great lyrical bit I'm looking to lift.
Interviewers aren’t always entitled to the interviewee pouring their heart out. A musician, or anyone isn’t obligated to give a really good interview. Just imagine how many interviews and press release stuff musicians and actors have to do back to back to back. It must be tiring. Great interview.
Less than a year ago, my wife and son were killed in a car crash. I thankfully still have a daughter, but have struggled so much with wanting to keep fighting moving forward. A second is a minute, a minute an hour and every day is an eternity. Speaking about loss, emotional trauma, wanting to help everyone else to push aside your own feelings, had me crying. in a foolish attempt to outrun my feelings, I've tried changing who I am, tried changing how I act, I didn't want to be that person that lost. Everything eventually comes back around, and I couldn't run away from myself anymore. You have to accept that you're broken. And that's understandable, and that there's no timeframe or expectations of recovery. Just breathe and find beauty in this world. Keep loving those you lost in a present tense, they helped make you who you are. And that thing should be beautiful, even if it is broken or missing pieces. Thank you. This new album has been my soundtrack.
I really hear you…..wish you all the very best. Xx
God Bless You Brotha. I don't know you obviously but I just read your post and it really got to me. I admire your strength greatly. I can't imagine that sort of loss.
I'm so sorry for your loss. This interview was full of gems. Accepting loss is such hard work but happens to us all eventually. You can help others in the long run. Feel it to master it. Best of luck to you.
prayers man, keep on living and enjoy the view
My condolences man. Also well said, your comment helped me. Thanks
After a comedy show 12 or so years ago, Neal bought drinks and talked to me at the bar for over an hour about my military experience overseas in Iraq - something I hadn’t done a lot of until that point. He’s just a wonderfully kind, empathetic and interesting human being.
Thank you for your service sir God bless you and your family
Josh just did an interview for Radio1 and he was no where near as opened as he was here. This is the most open I’ve ever seen him.. good job Neil
Nah I dunno him and Zane seem to have know each other forever and like each other but maybe you’re right he is much more unlikable than Neal. but British hipsters are all kind of that way.
@@chadgrovI think he's Australian.
It's old but the Mark Maron interview is pretty good.
on rogan he was open like this too
@@chadgrovZane isn't British. New Zealander. Not even close.
Offence taken. 🇬🇧
Funny how the algorithm reveals your deepest thoughts through Josh Homme's voice at 3 am on a Thursday morning. Very insightful.
"If you can't outsmart them, out weird them". I'll remember that. lol
THIS is exactly the kind of interview Neal should do
As an “a wrench doesn’t need a wrench” type person and who is approaching 5 months clean and sober, I really needed this today. Damn. Just when I thought I couldn’t love this podcast more…Thank you.
CONGRATS 🎉🎉 on your 5 months!!!🙂.you took back control of your life I'm so happy for you.GODBLESS.
Well done! Wishing the best possible future for you
Keep Going.... life gets lighter with time. The first year has these magical stages that are unprdicable but still universally true. The real WTF is when all those buried memories, thoughts and shames start emerging unexpectedly. Consider getting into therapy for help in navigating these moments.
luv ya m8
❤ wrenches still need to be cared for brother
This is the perfect side car to the new album for true fans. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better interview of Josh. This convo is straight gold for many reasons, so incredibly grateful to hear this stuff.
🍀
This is my favourite version of Neil brennan. Long form, intellectual, asking questions, good at listening etc He seems very genuine and comfortable in this format.
He’s been doing long form podcasts for a long while now. At least since the “Champs” pod
Homme also excels in this format. One of the best conversations I’ve listened to in a long time.
This is why podcasts are so amazing. Getting to hear someone I've idolized for twenty years talk on such a personal level and them confirming that they're as cool and interesting and deep and empathetic as their music would have you believe.
Well said. Long form interviews like that are so insightful.
QOTSA has been among my favorite rock bands since 1996, and before that, Homme's band Kyuss. Seeing QOTSA live is a unique experience, I have had the pleasure five times. On YT there is a live concert from their current 2023 Tour (recorded in Germany), and the whole band is in peak condition. Mikey Shoes is more confident than ever on the bass, Jon Theodore doesn't miss a (hard) beat on the drums, Troy van Leeuwen and Dean Fertita are rock solid on guitars and keys, and Josh himself is brilliant on vocals and lead guitar.
♫ Enjoy, here is the concert: ua-cam.com/video/YmxajSyMdeE/v-deo.html
what an amazing interview.. so glad Josh is still here. Please baby Jesus we need another Those Crooked Vultures Album
For anybody that’s been listening to the new album just over and over, this is incredible. He literally keeps dropping pieces of lyrics and stories that obviously relate the the new songs he’s written. I been listening to the album all day and I’m blown away to listen to this now.
New album sucks worse than Villains
Josh Homme is one of my favorite musicians. So excited to see him make an appearance here. Neal, this podcast is a highlight of my week. Great work.
Couldnt agree more!
I'm glad Josh is doing better. In the last few years we've lost so many great folks to drugs and suicide I was more than a little worried that Josh may have been one and I'm glad he made it out and is working on himself. ❤
He was a real douchebag of a man… so Im glad too.
Josh had a rough four-five years; he said in another interview it was the worst four years of his life. He battled skin cancer, quit the drugs, divorced from his wife, and lost seven close friends, among them Anthony Bourdain and Mark Lanegan. R.I.P. After all that ─instead of hiding away or turning to alcohol─ he got the boys together and produced another masterpiece of an album. That just shows how tough he is, but in a good way. In this interview you get to see how thoughtful and down-to-earth he is, and with a great sense of humour.
@@drumstick74 🎯💯🙌
It still hasn’t been stated publicly that the cancer was skin cancer. I think you’ve heard someone’s assumption.
I honestly couldn’t have thought of a more perfect conversation on Blocks. I’m a long time fan of both of these guys work.
00
I'm a lifelong fan of theirs, too. I have listened to the new QOTSA every day since its release, and I'll never miss anything from Neal.
"some words are so difficult to get past your lips, even though you mean them and know them" very well put, it is so tough to admit you need help.
Man, Josh has such an intoxicating laugh. It rings of actual joy.
This is the most real and honest I've ever seen Josh. Good stuff. Seems like he's on a much better path.
You can kinda see he wanted to go there in the JRE podcast
@@mccarty I don't think he was nearly as evolved at that point. He seemed like he was still talking around things then.
@@fl0nk11 Well also Joe did absolutely nothing to lead the conversation there. He was barely listening and responding with anything close to what Josh was saying
@@CCDaDon15 You're definitely right about that. He did perk up a little about halfway through, but man...that first half was just painful.
Pretty shocked by how specific and open Josh homme gets here. My first time watching the pod.. he’s a good interviewer
Them Crooked Vultures…2009 in Cologne-out of over 500 gigs I‘ve witnessed easily top 3!
This guy is a legend, one of the last true rockstars!
That tour was the bomb. Saw them 4 times. The Detroit Fillmore show was absolutely amazing.
Saw them in Toronto, definitely one the most memorable shows I’ve witnessed.
At every moment in this episode there is something said that is funny, insightful, profound, or thought-provoking. Wow.
Why does it feel like these two just became friends - One of the best episodes so far, in my top three for sure.
it for sure feels like that, the host is very honest and straight forward, no fake bs
One of the best and most unique musicians ever, not to mention the founder and frontman of the most badass band in the world
This is possibly one of the best interviews I've ever encountered. I'm a great fan of honesty and despair at the shallow nature of most corners of our culture. Josh is a recent discovery for me as a rock personality since a stellar performance at Glastonbury last week (I watched on TV) with the Queens and was the best act of the entire festival imo. Pure emotional feral creatures are rare. I thought I was alone. I'm so turned on I've come back to music. To be inspired by another human who talks your language and has conquered your fears is a gift indeed. Thank you both for a wonderfully wise and insightful episode.
Muy Bien 😊👍...keep on keeping on folks!
Josh has been my favorite musician, and Queens my favorite band, for almost 20 years... glad to have you with us!
He's a truly unique, insightful voice within Rock music, and the culture at large.
Never expected this guest! 😮What an awesome surprise! Seeing him live in 2 weeks :D
I will never forget buying the debut QOTSA album at the Record Exhange when I was 14 in '98. Totally life changing. Feel like i've grown up with the band and Josh.
Killer album!
What a great interview. Extremely respectful while still remaining humorous, but not in a way that deflects or hides from the seriousness of raw emotion. They were talking about these things in such an ethereal way that only people who have seen it firsthand and come out the other side can explain. Josh Homme is the best.
Beautiful interview. So deep and extremely vulnerable. 💔😭 This is what we need more of in the world. ❤
11 Minutes in and already 100x better than the Zane Lowe interview.
@@MrRatclima we weren't sure they were close friends the first 50x he said it
Agreed! This is gold
Zane Lowe is the fucking worst interviewer. He cries at the drop of the hat over nothing, such a sycophant.
Loving the new Queens of the Stone Age album, been a fan for years. Stoked to see him on here!
Real Talk between famous strangers. Congrats to Brennan for introducing a platform like this pod. Life is hard and wonderful and scary and depressing and hopeful and mundane and weird: Spend time on healing yourself before taking on the burdens of others.
I absolutely love Josh Homme. Beautiful human being, amazing musician and such an inspirational person. Bares his soul, candid, real and true. I feel privileged to watch this. Thank you 🔴👊🏻
I love hearing Homme talk live and breath art and poetry the man is a legend self aware, intelligent, introspective, cerebral, cool af and I've been feeling this from his music for years really cool to hear him talk
Thanks Josh for your honesty. It musta took a lot of balls to be so candid. Great music 🎶. It pulled me through shit as well. So to you and the rest of QOTSA. Thank you
This is one of the best interviews I’ve ever seen. I had to pause this thing at multiple times to deal with how closely the subject matter was hitting home. It felt like a therapy session, but also like being hit with a cast iron of shit I didn’t know I had to deal with. It takes balls to have a conversation like this publicly. Never felt preachy, but I’m thinking…I have some emotional work to do.
I really love how vulnerable and open Josh is in this interview. One of the real last rock stars and just honest. His music means so much to me and so many others. One of my favorite lyricists, so witty and orgiinal. Thank you for this.
Neal, Josh - I dunno if you’ll read this but I’ve watched/listened to many of the episodes of this podcast with interest and enjoyed them greatly but this episode, man. It really helped me in a way I can’t explain in a measly comment section. As someone who’s dealt with a lot of loss, struggle and just plain stuckness, for lack of a better term, hearing you identify and talk about the process of moving through these things, accepting loss, and transitioning from one phase of life to another, with gratitude and courage is amazing. Thank you both. I’ve been a huge fan of both of you for much of your respective careers and this conversation just heightened my appreciation of you both so much. Inspirational insights for real. Hope you both live very long lives and continue to share your art with us.
Josh is the goat. I wish he’d do more comedy podcasts
This ones with the Nerdist (now ID10T with Chris Hardwick) yearrrrs ago were hilarious, definitely need more
@@jambulance The one from the Clockwork era was legendary.
@@NoUploadJustComment was that the one when they joked about queens making an album called dublin to stab at U2 doing a Joshua Tree album
He’s got one with Bill Burr dropped today
With the comedian every line is on the cusp of a joke,
With the poet every line is on the cusp of a lyric.
man..... the more i watch interviews with josh the more and more i want to just sit and talk and talk about everything and nothing so intriguing feels like an old kindred spirit
as someone who cant or hasnt yet been able to ask for help, conversations like this give me hope.
For me the real gold here is the chemistry intersection of these two guys...
Neal is a active listener, he really engages with the other person, doesnt get distracted nor does he go for sensationalist questions. And he throws in these jokes which keeps it light.
But what i really wanted to say is that i agree with you. Its kind of amazing :)
@@helenomstreken7577 I agree he is a great listener and interviewer. The whole arc of the conversation was fascinating and I like where they ended up lol 😊
I’ve been a fan of Josh Homme and Neil for years and this was a real treat for me. What was amazing was the fact these guys can finish each others sentences.
I cant recommend this podcast enough or sing my praises enough
Neal deserves so much recognition that he already has. Amazing interview with a great musician
This was great, thanks to you both!
As a fellow speed freak dabbler in remission, its been clear to me from his lyrics that he enjoyed getting spun out. That shit is evil though but glad to hear him speak about it. First it giveth then it taketh away
Oh, NB has just hit another plateau of magic by having this guest.
Just found this podcast as part of my own new path to figure out my blocks at age 52. I love that this wasn't just two friends talking in public, but rather a real exploration of two people being willing to be open with each other and talk about things. As a musician, Josh has been a fantastic influence of creative freedoms, so it was enthralling to hear about how he lives and the challenges he has been through. I recently learned about "compounding trauma" through tackling all of the loses over the years of my life (which still sounds odd to me to say). So again, this was really impactful. Thanks Neal, this made an impact.
Love this podcast. Thank you for another great episode
What an incredible gift this conversation is, thank you.
Awesome interview. . . . Big QOTSA fan, and I am happy that Josh is in a great place - you can tell from the recent tour footage that he & the band have never been better. Big ups to NB for having JH on and cutting right to the bone & marrow. Thank you Neal.
This has been the best ‘new’ Homme’ talk-
The pace and the understanding, and the humor and the introspection- well done guys.. Thank you-
Great chat, depth and humor, watched from start to finish - thanks
This video literally gave me goosebumps. I couldn’t have ever imagined this was the reality behind the scenes.
Me too, it gave me goosebumps like 4 times when josh said some real and deep things
@@jonathanlatulippe6301
Just the part about “fixing a car that isn’t broken, and scrambling eggs that aren’t eggs.” When he mentions the come down and being angry and mad about everything, I can totally relate.
The shit is just poison. But I understand how you wouldn’t have the energy to get up each fuckin day on tour for like two years straight. No matter what, you end up in hell…
Wow, this is the best one of these so far!!
His appearances with Anthony Bourdain and Tosh.0 are killer and worth scoping if you haven't already.
It is always the highlight of my week when I hear someone reminisce about Tony😊
Tosh.0? He has a podcast? I haven't heard about him since I was a kid when he basically ran comedy central
He was also on Comedy Bang Bang (the show)
Thanks.
@@crh4878dammit dale!
Absolutely loved this interview! Thank you!!!
such an amazing interview. Thanks!
As a person who knows youtube, and thinks this podcast is amazing, id like to share my insights. 1. The Blocks Pod should have its own channel, aswell its own clips channel. Alternating frequently from 2 hour long videos to 5 min clips is highly detrimental to the youtube algorithm, and not Ideal for viewers/fans. 2. The Neal Brennan channel is 11 years old and had a totally different pod previously that died out. UA-cam keeps track of this and It is Killing the ability for the Blocks Pod videos to be recommended.
really gave me a lot to think about, this probably helped a lot of other people as well. The rock world doesn't get enough of this.
This is sooo good. Thanks Neal!
This is so good. Thank you.
This was such a treat. Thanks fellas! Good job putting Josh at ease Neal.
This is everything I wanted to here him talk about . Thank you so much this was an amazing podcast.
Thanks for doing this interview! It was fantastic, refreshing, and helpful! ❤
Thank you , I needed to hear this
Josh,Oscar Wilde was 6'5",and a poet, writer and an incredible artist.
Josh speaks exactly how I feel . I have a spirit that I cannot deny that was influenced by Hunter S Thompson, Jack Kerouac, Iggy, Perry Farrell, I can go on. I want to keep in touch with that wild "feral" side, but also enjoy the growth that recovery and its journey affords me. Its living between Chaos and Order...its a fine line. Great interview.
You forgot Bill Hicks
That was fun! Thanks Neal and Josh!
This is an amazingly rich conversation. Thanks for posting this.
This interview is what the Rogan interview should have been. Obviously different times but congrats on getting deep with Josh. This is great…
Joe Rogan is a whiny bore
True, maybe. But the vulnerability is actually the point of this show, don’t forget.
These episodes are so great! Neal, I feel like you are healing things.
This was a great conversation!
Fantastic interview/conversation!...
My favorite episode yet.
The best interview I've seen in a long time. Great job guys.
One of the best pods I've seen. New fan of this show.
That was great! Josh Homme is one of my all time favorite songwriters. Such an insightful and inspiring dude!
this podcast seems to just be getting better and better.
I never expected this thank you Neal
This is truly a great conversation.
Huge fan of Homme and all his projects man, so thank you for CUMMING UP IN MY ALGORITHM. This is a beautiful conversation.
Not even half way through and feeling very grateful to you both for the vulnerability and willingness… so many things here to reflect on not just within your own life but also within music and art. Thank you. God, it’s hard being human.
First time listening, Neal... halfway through and this is unbelievably amazing. Great episode, refreshing to see Josh vulnerable and open.
One of the best podcasts I've seen and I've seen way too many.
So relatable. We all go through these emotional peaks and valleys. Some really good insight here, love Josh and Neil great job on this one.
This one will be hard to top. You had me at compounding grief, trauma, disbelief, to surrender and acceptance. Still trying to get there myself. Keep the great content coming.
Never in my mind did I see these two gettin together! What a treat! Thanks Neil!
Awesome interview from two incredibly talented dudes. Thanks!
Great interview!! Thanks for sharing
This was my favorite episode, Josh was a wealth of emotion and the dialogue was brilliant!
Such a great guest! Queens of the stone age will always hold a special place in my heart. At one of their shows was the last time I got to hangout with my best friend before he passed.
Beautiful and purely honest conversation! So Beautiful to see, one of the best Pods I've seen and not even done. When Humans become vulnerable, transparent, let go and just be Free and Honest it's just truly nice to witness. The Elephant in the room was never scary to begin with!! :)
Need more people like both these guys in the world, truly
Thank you both for such an open and honest discussion. I will turn this knowledge into wisdom.
