    And omg about being proactive in healthcare - I have health anxiety so getting regular checkups annually is really important to me, and one of my things I like to do is an annual skin cancer screening. But the two or three years I’ve done this so far, they’ve been like “so why are you here? Just a screening? You don’t have to do this / you shouldn’t do this” and I’m like?? Why is it so absurd that I’d like to have a doc check all my lil frecks and moles once a year?

    honestly, STAY on the anti-depressies. I went off my anxiety meds earlier this year (after being on them for almost 4 years) and it took less than half a year for me to fully spiral into some of the worst anxiety I've ever had. Went back on the meds in October and I'm just now finally feeling like myself again. Don't think I'll ever go off them again

    being from a country with a universal health care system, it's crazy to even grasp the fact that in other countries health care isn't very accessible even to those who are a little more financially privileged. our healthcare system here in brasil isn't the best and it needs A LOT of work to really cater to everyone's needs but it's such a relief that we can talk about how to better our system instead of trying to have discussions about implementing a universal health care system. wish you all the luck to deal with this, kath, i can't imagine how frustrating that is.
    we have a far right wing government now that's always trying to make our health care system worse so that people associate it being public with being bad (just like they do with everything that is public: our universities, our schools, our shipping service, just anything public that we have), when in fact they are taking all the money from public institutions to the point they cant even function anymore and then they have a reason to privatize it and people just applaud thinking that privatizing will be better, which NEVER is.

    Glad you're loving Seattle! Growing up in the area, the best way I would combat the gray / rainy months (literally months of it because the weather goes into Spring as well) was going to a coffee shop that had a fireplace with friends. I cannot tell you how much I looked forward to going to those coffee shops with friends after school / and just hanging out and chatting. It's like this solidary feeling of "wow the weather here is ass, let's go huddle from it together". It's actually some of my fondest memories growing up there and something I wish I could do in Florida more.
    If you have not already, I highly recommend visiting Olympia! It's my actual hometown and has so much history and charm to it. The art walk and glass blowing festival is such a great way to connect with people and support local artists.

    My experience has been that when you've consistently been in a good, stable place for maybe a few months, that's when you can look at slowly weaning off the med, and evaluate along the way. It's something you should speak to your doctor about beforehand to get their perspective on it, the process will all depend on what you're up against diagnosis wise, do you have a support system etc.

    I agree about Daylight Saving Time being extra rough this year! - I think this year has been challenging becuase we went into this summer thinking "everything is back to normal" and then life sucker-punched us again. I work in the public school system and teachers keep saying that this year is worse than last year, which I think is because we all had high expectations. In summary, we need to have low expectations all the time and then we can't be disappointed.
    Exercise is great for SAD: either indoor or outdoor. I'm in a workout challenge right now that helps keep me accountable (and from falling into the cycle of - "eh, maybe tomorrow").
    Finally, I live in New England. This is my first year with a good heated blanket. Amazing. It adds 10 to the cozy factor (and it lets me forget that my heat is set to 65).
    Also if you see a therapist that is local to you they may be able to recommend a psychiatric nurse practitioner or another mental health professional that accepts your insurance and prescribes.

    I am pretty sure people in Cuba don't have accurate healthcare. I can say that as someone who was born in socialism and lived through the transition. I have public healthcare that I give like 20% of my paycheck for, but I don't use it and go to private doctors unless it is an emergency (then I sit in er for 5 hours). Same for my kids. From the same doctors that work in hospitals, they just give you better care in private practice. I would be happy if we had private healthcare since then I would pay much less, since I care of myself and am healthy. Also y'all live in a country where one can make money if they are working hard and educated, which is not the case in Cuba.

    • @christinefleitas1523
      @christinefleitas1523 2 роки тому +3

      I totally agree with this! I wouldn’t compare Cuba’s healthcare system to ours. I’m Cuban, and my family doesn’t even have the option right now to see a doctor because of COVID. Meanwhile, Americans can easily walk into an urgent care if need be. I understand your perspective but it’s invalid to even use Cuba as an example for comparison. Besides this, I truly love you and your channel!

    • @sb1206
      @sb1206 2 роки тому

      @@christinefleitas1523 Americans can walk into urgent care but you’re going to be chased down for the bill for every single thing they do for you. You’re also not going to receive the best care there. Urgent care is a poor substitute for a primary care physician. Millions of Americans “work hard” and still are paid a pathetic wage. I’ve lived in cuba and been poor in America. You cannot compare the two, you’re right. But the American system is inhumane. Health should not be for profit.

    I don’t want to scare or trigger anyone but to be honest there’s an extreme history of antidepressants in my family causing the worst outcome possible. I realize i might have depression but I am so terrified of going on antidepressants because of the pattern in my family. These days the gloomy weather (a rarity here!) have been doing WONDERS for my mental health! I strangely find myself more upset in during sunny days than colder days. I am glad though that they are working for you! And i think despite my own personal family medical history people should use antidepressants if it works for them !! :)

  • @kate.cousteils
    @kate.cousteils 2 роки тому +5

    Speaking from personal experience, it sounds like you have some internalized stigma about taking your meds. I went down the same road - it took me a few years to take my antidepressants consistently for fear of "not being myself." If your psychiatrist isn't saying there should be a time limit (Wellbutrin is also used to treat lots of other things), then please consider why you don't want to be taking them. ❤❤❤❤
    BUT please don't stop taking your meds without consulting with at least your primary care physician first!

    Maybe you can try looking up Scandinavian vloggers and how they deal with having a limited amount of sunshine during winter (max maybe 4 hours). I’ve seen a couple and recommend them if you’re worried about it. I usually try to remind myself that whatever situation I’m in I’m probably not the first person to go thru this and someone else very likely figured it out already.

    I really appreciate how open + vulnerable you are with your audience, but I wouldn't say what you're doing qualifies as oversharing. Oversharing online is definitely something that exists and something to be careful of - I remember a few years ago Dodie (a youtuber + musician who I love and have adored for years! you probably already know her lol) struggled with what she was sharing online as she was going through a lot of mental health issues and essentially was broadcasting all of it (the ugliest, darkest bits included) to a very young and impressionable audience. She came to terms with it with her audience and kind of realized that what she was sharing was not healthy or helpful to her or her audience, and was really negatively affecting a lot of people to the point of them needing to unfollow her. There are a few videos about it on her side channel I think (unless she eventually removed them which I would understand). Nowadays she has a lot more boundaries and is doing a lot better (from what I can tell as a viewer of hers). I guess what I would say is please continue to speak openly + share your life online (I LOVE this series!!!), but know that oversharing is real and does have the potential to have negative consequences.

      @@Katherout So why come off? I'm assuming it's because we're made to feel bad if we have a chemical imbalance that we need meds for because that makes us "weak" or something, but fuck that. you do you.

    22:41 Genuinely curious where you would have picked up or formed "bullshite" from! :0
    Shite is very commonly used (moreso than shit) in Ireland and Scotland, and I've never heard it outside of there or by non-irish/scottish people, but never in a combo like bullshit or shitshow either.
    I dunno, small lil thing that made me perk up with interest I guess lol. Pretty cool.

    How would you react if you show up to a blind date like you did and it turned out the guy is really short?? I ask because I'm not sure how to overcome the initial disappointment girls have felt about my height in those situations where there's no context and well every girl hopes the guy is a 6 footer

    • @Katherout
      @Katherout  2 роки тому

      it wasn’t set up as a date just two people meeting up so i wasn’t really expecting anything! i usually assume short guys won’t wanna date tall girls which only perpetuates the cycle lol
