Old retired diesel mechanic here, worked on many 71 series and later the 92 series Detroits. The school I attended back in the early `70s taught us that the reason these engines were made so that you could swap the blower side to side and turn the head around, swap the cam and blank shaft side to side was so that you could reverse the direction of rotation of the engines; very important in marine engines. A twin diesel setup in a boat or ship has one engine rotating clockwise and the other engine counter clockwise, to prevent the ship crabbing at an oblique. The props pull the same direction yes, but they rotate in opposition. If you swap that head, blower, cam ect, your engine will rotate in the opposite direction.
I love this piece. Where the mechanic takes pains to repair the machine. Very educational to viewers. Most yt posts prefer a quick fix. They abandon a machine requiring overhaul or major repair. In 3rd world countries, a hydraulic machine is a treasure. Repeatedly restored to good use time and again.
After watching you fiddling around out in the snow, I'm reminded of why I don't live in Michigan and I am very thankful that my folks left Racine, Wisconsin in 48. You have a beautiful state for about 6 months of the year.
You made a nice job of that, you probably didn't need to get the pistons fitted but it gave you confidence in the job and getting the replacement head was a wise choice. I'm retired now been around Detroits all my life and I can't remember the first one I put together,45 years ago at least but I guess I would have been more nervous than you. And just importantly, congratulations on baby. Now there's a different adventure. Thanks for your time mate and all the best for the future.
Great video, my grandfather owned a 1963 Michigan 75iii. It still runs and operates today. One of the loudest machines in our town when we have it running
Thoroughly enjoyable watching you guys work through each item methodically until it's done right! Can't wait for the next installment. Loving this channel!!!
Great job guys fixing up the loader especially in the winter, cold makes everything harder to accomplish but you guys succeeded just found your channel and subscribed. Looking forward to watching more of your videos.
A long time ago, when I was in the service, one of the guys said he had worked in an automotive garage, and they used telescoping radio antennas to push new rope seals in the upper half of rear mains that were still in the vehicle. Take care.
Awesome video once again, Chris . It proves UA-cam only want fake videos as your content is done in the day to day struggle of a normal working class guy
Thanks for some tough work. You and your father. Wasn't easy peasy by any means. It just shows I would have no business inside an old Detroit. Vacuum fitted piston pins. Cheeez.
injector dont sound like it set up correct watch (danger marine) there a mechanic in Australia that does a how to set up and tune those engine it really good
At 27:00 NO!! Don't due that in falling snow! Your just adding a bit of condensation to the block!!! --- Plan on future leaks with cork gaskets!! Set the idle so you DON'T have to keep starting it!!
I can't believe that you would start the machine and then try to move the machine without ever checking the fluids and then wonder "what's that sound?"! LOL! That was the sound of a $2000.00 hydraulic pump starving for oil.
Watching you start this with the valve cover on with (no vice grips) on the rack and no emergency cover for the intake in case of a run-a-way Is a recipe for disaster! 😮
Always have a way to shut off the air to a diesel engine on first start or when starting after a turbo failure where oil got into the air to air cooler. A board works for that.
A fellow michigander tbh I'll have to check but I think there is either an international or a Clark Michigan loader sitting outside an abandon property near me that could probably use a rescue I'll get back to you in while once I learn more
It does my heart good to see you using the correct tool for installing the rings. Now, if you would just stop using a claw hammer when working on equipment, that would really make me feel good. I sold tools to mechanics for 40 years so if I rag on you, it's just from habit.
It's a Jimmy of course it will run , working in the winter time is bad enough outside for a project Na that's ok for you young guys for me that's a Hell Now a warm garage for me now
Do not run multigrade oil use only 30 or 40 weight engine oil. I learned that from the old guys. They said they will leak oil more if you use multistage oil and everything I do it leaks more. For some reason
@mchl8 you have no idea about these 2 cycle engines. They did not have multi grade oil back then. The multigrade oil was developed for the high pressure fuel systems in the newer engine designs.
@@andrewtiefry5990 wat do I not know or aware of? The multi grade pils are not just designed for high pressure systems. Multi grade oils were produced long long before high pressure oil systems were even thought of. So come again?
@mchl8 last one I own several 2 stroke detroits and have several really good master 2 stroke detroit masters tell me the exact info of what to use and why in a 2 stroke detroit. And it works why I have no idea. They just leak less and there is nothing clean about a 2 stroke detroit your going to change the oil one way or another. Either your going to add oil and it leaks or change the the oil and it leaks.
A little late here, but have got s 3-53 in an old army crane we still use.. runs like dog shit, but always does with a snort of anesthesia..im not gonna pull the valve cover cause im hoping itll just die...i dont really care for 2 strokes.. all they do is make noise and go nowhere...but theyll do it with practically anything in the tank .. maybe someday ill learn to appreciate what they were/are but as of now, they're nothing but a boat anchor to me🤣...but anyway 👍👊👊
Man don’t give away the bid reveal at the beginning of the video. This video is a will it run video so I would wait to show everybody if it ran or not later in the video because now I know it ran, so why do I have to watch the video?
My guy, you are too high-strung...be a little kinder with your words, especially towards your dad. Otherwise, really cool video and overall great work!
Being honest, maybe I might be a bit excited at first but as you just went through a lot of work, why try to make this rig work without the amounts of oils and other to make sure nothing fails in the start?? Not ragging ya, but its a bit of a let down
Your supposed to take the engine out when you rebuild it you can't even see what the cylinder walls look like that way you sure wouldn't be rebuild my engine for me and if you do get it running what's saying that it won't blow up on you or your doing it just to get rid of it really quickly I know several tricks to get an engine running just to make a buck on but I am not that way and I don't go ripping people off that way

Love the sound of this loader

Field rebuild in the winter......that takes a big set of stones.
Well done guys.
You're lucky you still have your Dad to work with. Thats a great project
Yeah we have fun together yelling at one another and whatnot haha
Talk about years of hard work! Great job documenting it and putting the video together!
Woo-hoo! What a gem! Good process learning the mechanics of a 3-53. Good job overall so far!
Thanks!

Thanks! No one told me it would be harder to get stuff done with a baby but it’s been great!
Let's Geaux!!! Man Pops JL has to be one of the most positive optimistic men on the planet!!! Never a Debby downer!!
Hahaha
Y by 3:30 😊
Bvb u h😢😢
You should have paint everything you could Alpine Green. I'm sure every Golfer was happy like I would have been to hear that Detroit spooling
Great video, my grandfather owned a 1963 Michigan 75iii. It still runs and operates today. One of the loudest machines in our town when we have it running
from you i learn repair...and more importantly slant on life. thank you.
Nice work getting it running again and out of its grave..
Cool video. Good reminder to get working on my own projects!
27:23 Ahhhhhhhhh, nothing better than clean fresh air while working on a diesel..... 😊
Thats how you know it needs work!
Omg, awesome, another great video, i learn a lot, you are a great teacher and your explanation are awesome 👍👍👍👍
Okay, I finally got to see the White puppy, both dogs are fabulous! gsw

Hell yeah man! This is getting me excited, I recently worked a deal on an old fiat allis. Can’t wait. Nice work.

Thanks!!
Fantastic Job Fella's! Always enjoy your video's! It must be very rewarding to see that thing move under its own power! Please keep up the good work!
Thanks!! It was really cool. Hasn’t been out since I was a kid.
Nice save!!!
Can you call it a save if we left it there to die 🥴
Nice to see u got it running an moving. If interested I know of another 55 for sale. Pretty rough but good for parts.
In Gaylord?
No, Sheboygan,WI I came across it while looking for parts for my 85 series.
Roofing nail to spin out main bearings! *BRILLIANT*

New with you. Great job on the loader.
Thanks! Using it quite a lot
Great video. I probably would have been too afraid of breaking a bead and aired up the tires some more before trying to move it.
It needs tires so bad if it popped a bead it would’ve just saved me some work 🤣🤣
That looked like more work than fun. Congrats on the new baby.
Sometimes it feels like it but when you fire it up for the first time… that’s the fun part. And thanks!!
Thank you from Cheboygan Mi
Hello neighbor!
Awesome video once again, Chris . It proves UA-cam only want fake videos as your content is done in the day to day struggle of a normal working class guy

Good job GUYS 👏👏💪
Thanks!!
Hooray. Great job guys,
Thanks!!
Love it MANN!!!❤❤❤
Check lines and diesel filter seals its pulling air Good video
☹🇬🇧
Yeah we were frustrated. Definitely a little work to do but we’ve come a long way!!!
Enjoyed the project 👍
Awesome, thank you!
10/10 Bloody oath top job on rebuild

that is awsome
I spent a lot of time upside down catching rods. Also never start a Detroit unless you know you can shut it off
How many puppies do you have. The black one with the red collar looks fabulous
Watching you start this with the valve cover on with (no vice grips) on the rack and no emergency cover for the intake in case of a run-a-way

Very cool
ive had goodluck bleeding at the injectors..crack yhem and when they drip tighten them up.. and prefill those fuel filters 😎😎👍👍
Another screaming Detroit diesel brought back to life! Good job!
Thanks! Back to converting fuel into noise just like they should!

It builds character working in the cold like that.
Those Detroits will run in such shape if you can break them free. They're the undisputed kings of reliability and love the ether.

Nope not at all 15 40 for diesels specially designed to battle the build ups from happening

Where did you get the vacuum pump from and what brand is it
💥
You seemed to scared to rev it up much but Detroit Diesel are high rev engines especially the old Detroit
Gota put oil In the transmission
Да нам бы такую технику 😢
It takes 1000° to ignite diesel fuel and what you’re not sure you’re getting because you didn’t check
Check the transmission fluid

Didn’t want to waste the fluid in the event it didn’t start 🤣🤣🤣
What did they do to the Other head 😦😦
Favor transmitir o vídeo em português ok.
And all it needed was just a bit of penetrating oil...
Would that have fixed the cracked blower? Or maybe the slop in the main bearings
👍😎💯🇺🇲
In the beginning of the fresh build ether helps don’t be a crackhead
It’s a Detroit!! Rev it !!!! Or your get nowhere!!!
It sure sounds like it’s going somewhere fast even when it ain’t!!
@@dieseJL lol yep that’s a Detroit for u, the power is at the high end of the revs

Amateurs. Out of their depth on this.
Idk she runs pretty well these days. But then again I’m an amateur.
I always put rubber hose on the rod bolts when installing pistons and jugs. Learned the hard way by tagging the crank once - ouch
