@@SapphireSword-pd1ix Kojima is also not precisely an entirely blameless party either IMO. Konami was doing him dirt but Kojima refused to relent either. Both sides were basically bulls ramming into each other to see who was superior. On the Konami issue I'd say Igarashi was done dirty whileKojima just got just desserts for his excessive spending.
Amazing to think that a decade ago, everyone thought Inafune leaving Capcom and funding MN9 was an instance of fans and creators getting what they wanted and sticking it to the 'big, evil tyrannical game companies.' How little we fucking knew at the time... or just refused to acknowledge about Inafune.
lolrus555 Now look, Capcom is on top of the world right now. They’ve been hashing out hit after hit. Then they also released Megaman 11. Meanwhile comcept occasionally helps out with or makes games and not a single peep has been heard from them.
Dante's whole shtick is how stylish he always is. That sequence at the beginning of the game where he flies through his trailer getting dressed as a half-eaten pizza slice censors his stuff was the only (arguably) stylish thing he did THE ENTIRE GAME.
This is a textbook case of screwing yourself over by getting defensive when faced with legitimate criticism. It was Capcom's idea to have a radically different take on the series, the dev team wanted to be more faithful, but when the backlash hit they kept doubling down until they took ownership of Capcom's terrible decisions.
@@mariokarter13 When you failed to see that Capcom wanted a different take on the series but they had nothing to do with the plot and dialogues on this game. It's all on NT. A textbook case of an ignorant.
@Jonathan Soko Nobody cares. This is about how it scared off fans and didn't attract new ones (as the sales figures show), not about how the game is better than you thought if you play the definitive edition on Hardcore mode, skip all the cutscenes to try and avoid the joyless edge, and give up on the game having as much depth as DMC3/4/5, the exploration of which being the whole point of these types of games.
"What was cool 12 years ago isn't cool anymore" funny how dante in dmc5 is COOL AS SHIT while looking a lot more realistic than the anime look in dmc4 , everyone still love him even if he looks different, because he's still dante. And look at that , people like nero and V and everyone else too
This video makes me really happy Capcom didn’t know what the fans wanted, they dug their heads in the American soil and ignored fans. But then... they listened. No companies died and the franchise we loved was resurrected in a way we love. That’s inspiring.
You know. Maybe this is the one time GameStop talked me into getting the better game. I was about to buy DmC since it was $5 but they actually told me the better game was the HD collection of the first 3 games. We debated for 15 minutes, and I was talked out of getting it. Now I see why he looked so relieved that I wasn't getting the Xbox 360 version of DmC
The contrary for me, I was hunting for games and the guy at the store said "Hey, this one's pretty cool". And effectively, I enjoyed the heck out of it. With no other reference to the series as a whole I just found a fairly accessible action game with lots of variety and good enough graphics. Visually, thematically and story wise, DmC is a pretty odd game, but I still find it mechanically pleasing.
@@DrZuluGaming Man, I am the wrong person to ask what went through his head when he for some reason thought making a cool badass hot lady into a schoolgirl was a good idea.
A decent game heavily hampered by, "Not reading the room" and having a REALLY bad story decision. Sorry, but I should not say, "This is the scene where Vergil does an abortion via Sniper Rifle" and be 100% honest about it.
@@mejrikais7432 I agree, I had to cancel pre-order back than after I heard the horrible reviews it got. Yosuke Hayashi, took the backlash really seriously & re-built the game from the ground up, leaving the original story intact. Re-releasing it as Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge.
I like to put Devil May Cry (2013) in the same category as Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts; when one their own they’re relatively enjoyable games, but immediately when they’re put in within the context of their respective franchises they’re an absolute slap in the face to their pre-established fans.
Stop. The gameplay was just as good. The issue was the characters and them trying to replace established lore. The gameplay stayed true to the series and was even smoother than how Dante played in 4. The same cannot be said for Banjo as Nuts and Bolts fundamentally changed everything about the characters AND the gameplay.
@@mcfry13 I would say dantes gameplay in 4 is better than DmCs because in DmC the gameplay is too easy where as in 4 you could play dante in a variety of ways and pull off complex but enjoyable moves to help you get better and challenge you. DmC's gameplay gets rid of that challenge and now you can spam the same attack to keep up your style meter
i would also like to put the 343 halo games and coalition gears of war games in that category as well. yes i know those are made by different companies and are different genres but the same comparison can still be made.
Oof. The 7th generation era was just not a good time for Japanese developers. They got blinded to pander the western market in spite of the western market like their games for being essentially Japanese. But hey, these days Japanese developers are nailing it. Mostly!
@@SakurakoLover only difference is cod was actually good for awhile. I can't think of too many Japanese developed games that were all that great in the 7th generation.
Zazon Zenzy Blame Inafune. He wanted to push for more Western developed stuff. That’s why Dead Rising 2, Lost Planet 3 (which doesn’t exist btw) and a whole bunch Japanese games got Western developed sequels. Capcom ate that shit up and realized too late. Honestly fuck him.
ALSO most western devs REFUSED (out of fucking arrogance, I assume) the black magic engine that was MT Framework for the plain ass unreal engine 3. Especially when it was at its peak and Capcom even offered to translate it for them. WHAT THE FUCK. This is the one thing that makes me the mega shitting mad because look at all these fucking arrogant game devs and their games: they didn’t age well, their art styles look like SHIT, they play like SHIT. DmC looks fucking ugly even with the Definitive edition. Dead Rising 2 was ...eh, I like it but it didn’t have the charm that the first game had. This is the last time I’ll acknowledge its existence but LP3 looks like The Last of Us and Dead Space without a single iota of anything unique. Now compare it to their predecessors! LP2 is one of the most unique shooters that will ever come out and will stand the test of fucking time, I play it bi-yearly just to experience it all over again. The same could be said for both Dead Rising and the og DMC series. I’m sorry for ranting but I still mourn for the loss of such potential. But I’m glad we’re experiencing a resurgence, starting with DMC5. I sincerely hope we’ll get the proper sequels that we deserve, someday.
Ah yes, I remember that awkward age as a gamer in japan. Around that time, everybody started to play western games because japanese games were suddenly bad (probably due to those HD development). Not long after that, the developers started to pump out those "rebooted for western audiences" games, which was just awkward so we bought their games even less. Then mobile games happened, then steam. 7tth gen pretty much was the moment japanese game industry fell apart.
After finishing DMC5 i almost cried of joy. It was like seeing and old friend you thought was gone forever. A true love letter to the franchise. And I'm in the camp who doesn't detest DmC, but if it was there to replace the old saga then it failed miserably to connect with the players. And I can't believe that our loyalty and support to this franchise paid off with the release of DMC5. In this field seeing a game being revived to its old self after a failed reboot, doesn't happen often.
I haven't played 5 yet. Not interested as much. I wanted DmC 2 instead. Better story and loved the direction more. 2 sucked, 4 wasn't great. Why would I want that to continue?
I liked DMC. I tried to see it not as a Devil May Cry game but as an original title that had the license shoved into it. I enjoyed the concept of demons controlling the media, that the world we live in is a facade that encourages us to conform, consume, and obey. When you entered new areas, they would become corrupted and you'd see what it really is, the world that's obscured from human eyes. I think if DMC had just been its own thing, with original characters and such, it would've been a success, though I doubt Ninja Theory could've actually afforded to do it without the Devil May Cry license.
if ninja theory treated it like how bayonetta was treated and make it its own separate franchise, no one would have complained at all. sure, you see comparisons between bayonetta and devil may cry but not many talk about how bayo is a rip off of the other
I don't know why this game gets so much hate. It's a dope game. Dope characters. Dope story. I like what they did with it. I really wish they had carried on with it as a parallel thing. It really sucks that they didn't.
If DmC was it's own thing it would have been completely shafted. DmC is just a mediocre action game, without the devil may cry license and the controversy it would have been one of the most forgettable games ever made. There is no saving grace for a game with low quality characters, story and much lower quality gameplay than the competition (DmC would still be compared to DMC even if it was it's own thing). Even Hellblade propably NTs best game is quite forgettable let alone something like DmC
The thing that makes me laugh about the "Dante would get laughed out of a bar" comment (besides the fact that Dante doesn't drink) is that, if that were to happen, he would probably just sit down and order a sundae. In fact, in the first scene of the Devil May Cry anime, THAT'S LITERALLY WHAT HE DOES! Edit: Wasn't sure if Dante drinks or not, thank you Coleco 84 for correcting me.
@@Slop_Dogg Exactly. It isn't really that he's "cool", he's just really fun. Though from what I understand that is due in part to Reuben Langdon's portrayal of the character from 3 onward. (which makes the western focus of DMC even more hilarious since Langdon is, y'know, American)
@@Jose-se9pu Thank you. The "rarely if ever" bit was due to me not having played all the games. I didn't want to say he doesn't and have some obscure scene from DMC 2 get pointed out to me or something. Also I haven't actually played 5 yet. (though I do plan to)
the thing is, if dante went to a bar and someone laughed at his coat, his response would be to execute the demon he went in there for, make a "laugh at that" quip to the person who laughed and then fucking leave because he has better things to deal with. and then whine to trish about it the entire way home, but that would be in private.
Dante does drink, but rarely. It was shown in the lesser canon mediums like the ED in the anime and tge novels. But even then, he's only shown to drink for a reason, not recreation. In the ED he's drinking while reminiscing about his family and in the novel it's done for... Let's say social interactions. The point is, no matter ho badass or cool he looks, Dante's still first and foremost a kind-hearted mumma's boy. And we love him for it.
It's funny how old Dante is called dated then they make the most dated character ever Also old dante was deeper than you think the biggest proof is dmc3 his relationship with Vergil and their separate ideologies is simple yes but very powerful
Imagine how much different DMC-DMC would've been if someone had shown Ninja Theory that Deviantart already existed during the development stages of the game.
Ever notice that people who make claims to that, in that a classic character or setting is too old or whatever, always winds up making horribly dated replacements? I ALWAYS laugh when shit like that happens because it just shows how out of touch the people who say that are as well as something else that always seems to be the crux of that. In the end, they always just replace everything that winds up being tied into their own personal wants and self-inserts. It just keeps hitting that pattern. "Well, this OOOOOLD series is old because it doesn't have MY unique touch or vision! And you know what would be better? If the character were like ME! And I was the one doing the things! If I were the (insert main character here), I wouldn't do that stuff! I would do that instead and beat the boss in 2 seconds because I'M so cooooool!" Every, Single. Time.
If Dante walked into a bar outside of Tokyo, and got laughed at, he would either ignore them, be beat the crap out of him, or see no one would say anything because he's carrying them around two pistols and a giant sword
Yeah if he actually entered a bar, the people that would laugh at him would probably decide not to since his sword is half the size of him and he's got two guns specifically made for his fast trigger fingers so, yeah.
someone explain why a demonic sonic the hedgehog laughed as a big assed bikini woman statue flew around him then a grizzled woody the cowboy doll said shut up and shot the screen?
Year late, but look up Illbleed. It's... a game. EDIT: I had forgotten that the end of the video mentioned the footage was from Illbleed, whoops. Still, Illbleed is a hell of a thing.
I love how when Tameem Antoniades quotes were being read, the soundtrack from the PS1 Rugrats game was being played, I played that game way too many times to not recognize it lol (Also, I am grateful DmC gave us "Zoom in on confused Dante's Face", "Vergil-Mobile" and "Fetus Deletus" memories)
If I ever saw someone dressed like DMC 4's Dante get out of the bar, I would be running from that shit as far away as possible, where Dante goes, trouble follows, and with demons involved, so no thanks, or give him a thumbs up because Devil May Cry.
The definitive edition made this game better for me but it will always share the same place as DMC 2 as games that I will convince myself never existed. But the “Dante is a gay cowboy” shenanigans will never be forgotten.
Along with that slideshow, you have to love how they suggest Glam Metal (dudes who wore make up, and alot of hair spray) was exclusive to Japan, as they showed a photo of X-Japan against The Clash - with DmC is and DmC is not - when that was more rampant, and wide spread in America with the likes of Motley Crue, Poison, Ratt, Cinderella and Nitro to name a few. Also as well I can remember it saying DmC is not Batman, which at least they got that right. I can imagine DmC Dante would be the kind of street punk the Dark Knight would bash in a night patrol of the city
He isn't gay, he might be Bi, but only because us girls are willing to share (maybe). Or, if he is gay, we get Vergil and Nero AND Lady for our gay girls.
The Vergil they gave us in this version is infinitely worse then what they did to Dante. They turned the most honourable, and methodical character in the franchise, into a douche with a fedora that performs abortions with a sniper rifle.
@@Lugbzurg He also ripped off a dudes arm and threw away his humanity just because he was salty that he can't beat Dante. Vergil is a lot of things, honorable isn't one of them.
ILLBLEED is a trip. While it's super clunky, I think if given a sequel with modern work itd be a neat game. Loved that game, but I cant recommend a playthrough because of the controls.
In retrospect, the DMC debacle seems like it may have been an important moment. It seems like it was the beginning of fans being shamed for not unconditionally liking whatever studios served up. Perhaps I'm wrong and there may have been examples before this, but this whole episode stands out in my mind.
Ninja Theory boss Tameem Antoniades has said that DmC Devil May Cry‘s new look for Dante is “all about cool” and that the previous Dante design we’ve come to know and love just “isn’t cool anymore”. hmm whos games sold more copies?
The opposite can be true as well. Just look at what happened to Other M when Nintendo tried to make it more suitable for Japanese audiences. The big takeaway is that if your game is primarily made for one audience and has been for a while and even has a substantial fan base, then making a mainline game that caters to a completely different audience may not work out so well.
@@gabrieltorres6633 No one is saying that. What's being said is that in the case of DMC the western audience did like the original games. But then Capcom decided that they needed to westernize the game to make it appeal more to a western audience and thus alienated the audience they already.
If ya think about it, Hellblade is basically the same sorta game they were making before DmC, Simple Combat, Big emphasis on facial animation and all that, Guess something finally stuck to the wall for them eventually
Tameem: The whole point of Devil May Cry is that Dante is supposed to be cool, and you're supposed to feel cool while playing! Me: *watches the background as Dante, sleeping naked, takes a drink from an open alcohol bottle and then answers the door to his crappy trailer... naked from what I can tell* .... riiiiiiiight.
I remember a friend of mine, who was and probably still is a diehard DMC fan, lose his shit when the DMC reboot was announced. My friend, among others in our circle, pretty much complained about everything mentioned in the video. I have never played a DMC game so I gave the reboot a try and...it was okay. It did not turn me into a DMC fan, but it was entertaining especially with the political themes as shallow as they were. After watching this video, I can now see what the big fuzz was about for DMC fans.
I'm gonna add a point to the mistake of including DmC Dante in All-Star Battle Royale; he had to share a roster with Revengence Raiden of Platinum, which, in and of itself is nothing, but given the ever expanding reputation of the former DMC (let alone Capcom) developers who at the time had SUCCESSFULLY aided in the redesign and increase popularity for a mainstay game protagonist (Raiden), to have a perpetually mired character redesign competing with an action game character design inspired by YOUR character's original design and appeal, made DmC Dante, and the project as a whole, look all the more desolate.
Unlike DMC, Revengeance was actually good. So Capcom’s bad decisions made Denté(as I call him) in PSASBR(PlayStation All Stars Battle Royale) a lousy pick for DLC.
Necessary correction which just kind of sucks: DmC Definitive never released on PC. I had a passing interest in it and it's mildly disappointing. DE does a lot to make the game more palatable.
@@zaphero5518 There are mods that remove the color lock bullshit (except for grapples and dont fuck your style like in definitve edition). There's even Turbo mode and Bloody Palace changing mods.

Y'know, I only ever played the very first Devil May Cry, wayyyy back in the day. I'm thinking of trying DMCV, because I have fond memories. And even I can tell that Mr. Antoniades was wrong. Devil May Cry isn't all about being cool. Devil May Cry is all about having FUN. Even back n the day, the game wasn't really "cool." It was like a child's idea of what being cool is. It's completely immature and patently silly. I don't know if that was intentional or not, but it's what made the game work, like a B movie that misses the mark and hits a super secret prize target just behind the one they were aiming for. It's cool in certain ways, and at certain times, but that's just the window dressing. What makes Dante great is that he's the Bruce Campbell of video game action heroes. An over the top, cartoon caricature of a badass superhero. Trying to take him seriously is like giving Lobo an angst-ridden backstory. It misses the mark so hard that the arrow just hits the floor, the prize target not even close.
14:10 But he was deeper than that. He was the son of Sparda. The whole thing with his mom and Trish? It worked really well. I think the first DMC struck a really good balance of simple but solid story-telling and great gameplay. He was never a "goofy asshole" you guys just chose to perceive him that way cause you don't understand the concept of one-liners. In 3 he's a little more cocky and loud-mouthed cause he's younger but it's sad to see the entire fanbase jump on the bandwagon of "he's goofy ahahah". Zoomers smh .
@vineapplepizza Cause in DMC 4 he meets Nero, a possible relative of Sparda. Seeing that this novice in devil hunting business is in need of mentoring, and might be part of his family, brings back the old attitude again.
yeah. After the end of DMC2, he regained his carefree, goofy personality. And meeting Nero helped solidify his personality as he felt life was going good on his end
U dmc fans are the worst ninja theory's DmC was a solid game the story was just more gothic punk edgier version than the original more anime original 1
I kinda lump this game into the same category as Other M, where it has solid enough gameplay (Especially DMC DMC), but goddamn does the story and the characters drag it down so far. Not that DMC stories have ever been great or anything, but I'd prefer nothing over what DMC DMC tried to do.

oh man, you didn't add my favorite comment - kat's not like those other devil may cry girls, she's a strong female character (paraphrasing). or anything about how the definitive edition was basically made from stolen mods from the fan community and that's why there's no definitive edition on the pc.
Yea, nah. That quote is terrible. Kat is the weakest one. Lady and Trish might be dressed to suit male boners, but they are not pushovers, and are shown regularly kicking arse without a mans' help. Dante doesn't hit on them the way he taunts/flirts with the female demons that he doesn't respect. He treats them the same as he would a male human character. Thats a way more acceptable pro-female design to me than a not-sexualised girl who needs a strong guy to protect her through the whole game, and ends up as the love interest because he is the hero.
@@suraventri2544 That's actually a common thing with Capcom. Their girls dresses are often undignified, but their characterizations aren't and they would surely kick your ass.

Surprised you didn’t mention the time when Ninja Theory publicly made fun of original Dante for being “gay”. Weird that they’d try to insult someone over sexuality when their version was a statutory rapist too.
@@ctpp64 I haven't played the game, but statutory rape is when a minor consents to sex with an adult. The adult is still committing rape because the minor is underage. So I assume Dante in this game has sex with someone underage.
I played every installment of the Devil May Cry series and there was not a single hint of the reboot Dante being a statutory rapist. The closest thing to it is one of the antagonists, Bob Barbas, declaring Dante as a "sexual deviant" as part of his propaganda.
I gotta agree with @@kenjihirata6834 here, I too have played every Devil May Cry game, including the reboot, but not once in DmC did they ever suggest he went with some underage chick. He may have been a dick who walked out in public naked, went out drinking and slept with two strippers (who were probably demons), made fun of a guys dead newborn-ish baby (which was a low blow but served it's purpose), but in the end he never committed statutory rape. Sure he made a dirty conment towards Kat ("I like it rough") but that was in the beginning before he started to care what was going on. They at least gave him a little arc that gave him the ability to care for humanity. I doubt in the end he would have dirty thoughts about Kat, plus we don't even know her age. To dumb it down, pretty sure he went from "To Lewd" to "To Protecc" to the only female out of the 3 (5 if you count the strippers) that had a part in the story. Where you get this information from I have no idea. We supppsed to believe Bob Barbas's word of a Demon whose job is to sway the opinion of the public that Dante is a "sexual deviant"? I doubt that. I'm all for negative talks on DmC Donte's character, but at least say stuff that is actually true. He's an asshole throughout the game, but he isn't even close to being suggested as a statutory rapist
holly shet dude, stop making such blatant lies, you clearly didnt play the game. i have all the dmc games installed in my pc and not once was Donte/Dino(whatever you want to call him) even mentioned raping someone, just bob barbas(the new anchor boss) just spewing lies about him to make him an "evil person" in front of the humans
to this day i still dont understand why game journalists completly freaking love the game...while everyone else thinks its underwhelming to say the least
The game is alright IMO. Not only is it worth playing, its pretty fun to play too. Then again, I suck at all the DMC's so maybe my opinion doesn't count!
In addition to what the guy above me said, I've seen suspicions that game journos feel the need to defend it because to admit it sucked means admitting that fans were right and the critics were wrong. The game was one of the earliest cases I can think of of the journos and fans having starkly different feelings on a game, so I wouldn't be that surprised if there was some sort of projection going on with the eternal conflict between the ~enlightened, intelligent journalists~ and the everyman gamer.
I mean there's loads of reasons. their Standarts are set by giving every cod game an 8 at the very least Money and just in general the reviews where so shallow its obvious that they just button mashed through the game and said good after that.
Man, you made a great point with it being so rare that a game like this neither destroys or bolsters a series/developer. It just kinda...came and went. Great vid!
That whole controversy is one of the biggest ones I endured as a Devil May Cry fan as I followed UA-camr EventStatus throughout it all live as it was happening. I'm just glad it flopped hard and we ended up getting DMC5 now to heal my soul and let me trust Capcom just a tiny bit more. Now I just need them to get my favorite Capcom character off of the moon and we'll be squared away!
Capcom Dante: Surfer cool dude who has cheesy and cleaver lines, who doesn't drink or smoke, and rarely cusses. He taught enemys to have fun for himself, players loved him, cause he wasn't a edgy cringe. Ninja theory Donte: Cusses whenever he can, has very few cleaver lines(I won't lie it did have some), a meth addiction inside a bud lite can. We didn't care much about the appearance change, we were pissed about the 180 of one of our favorite video game characters. This Dante doesn't have a taught buttom( already- 500 points) but in cut scenes he talks like the 9 year old you'd find on roblox servers who just learned they can curse.
7:12 Omg I hate myself for recognizing that music from the Shadow the Hedgehog soundtrack (and 8:30). Edit: Now that I think about it, how appropriate for DmC.
This game was my first entry into the franchise, and I liked it! I was like "whoa, if this game is awesome, how awesome are the other games?" AND they, especially three and five were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!
ehhhh my first game into the series was DmC: Devil May Cry. I'd say they did a good job to introduce newcomers to the series. I personally enjoyed the game a lot. I still went back and played all the original Devil May Cry games and just finished 5 recently, can see why hardcore fans hated the reboot but..ehh, it's not a bad game really, just not on the same standard as the previous games.
The Gintama6 I’ve personally been a fan of the series since the original game first came out. I totally enjoyed DmC on its own merits. It especially has some amazing art direction. I still wonder what would have happened if it had been released as an original IP and didn’t have the baggage of being a reboot.
Agreed. If it had been anyone BUT Dante it could've worked. Even as an alternate universe thing. Then the half devil half angel thing might have fit in better as well.
Chokah See personally I thought the alternate lore was interesting and opened up different stuff they could do for potential sequels. I tend to just approach these things with the dissonance that it isn’t the same character/universe anyway. In DMC5 they went back to canon, but in some cases it was more of let down when characters I really liked in previous games didn’t feel like they did much.
That's fair. I'm a fan since the original and the only reason I didn't give this game a chance was because of Tameem's comments. I played the demo with my brother and I remember thinking "the combat is no DMC3, but for what it is, it wasn't bad". But because of Tameem, I still didn't buy it. I remember that fan outrage campagn well and I think a lot of DMC fans refused to buy the game because of Tameem and his obnoxious defenders. I think if he just shut his mouth and let the game speak for itself, it would have made a lot more money.
Nice to see a thread with less vitriol. DmC Devil May Cray was a good game and i loved it and that fact that the story atleast makes logical sense compared to other Dmc titles. Honestly I prefer the ninja theory dante as he has a character arc and grows in the game while I dont feel that with the other dante at all
11:30 I think this guy missed the point. DMC is all about being stylish. Being cool is simply a by-product... Unless you're Vergil. edit: Spelling errors
Tameem saying that people would laugh at Dante's outfit at a bar so that's why it needs to change is possibly the stupidest thing I've EVER heard. If you rocked up to a bar in a Mario outfit people would laugh too. Does that mean Mario needs to get an edgy redesign with 2022 fashion for his new game? Smh.
why would they, the definitive edition was just them stealing mods people made on pc to make DmC even the slightest bit less dogshit in the first place.
"Usually the worst creative crimes are made when you're trying to make a game for someone else - some perceived demographic that in all likelihood, doesn't actually exist." Capcom left the chat. The mainstream movie industry left the chat.
14:09 another level to that is that the story that was there was incredibly good when it wanted to be and subtle for the people that enjoyed that. It felt like a fundamental misunderstanding on both fronts to be like “we need a better story” when the story was already good “we need a story focused game” when the story to fans was always secondary
You know for such a big deal at the time...it seems that this game is going to be a relic of history...something that holds great history, but in the end meant nothing for the world.
Glad youtube recommended you. New favorite gaming channel. Love the effort and distribution time of your videos. Great stuff man, it boggled me how youre not over a million subs yet. Soon!
The sales of DMC5 has just exceeded 5 million units. And boy, this takes me back to when people thought that this reboot was supposed to sell 5 million copies. While the original article that reported about it made numbers up, Capcom did say that they wanted to sell God of War III sales numbers before dropping their sales projections further and further. By the way, the fact that a title in the original series achieved 5 million sales is fantastic. Good job to Itsuno and his team.
DmC may not have been the right business decision to make but the potential damage it could have caused to Capcom, Ninja Theory and the Devil May Cry series was mitigated by one simple fact: The game (objectively speaking) was actually still a pretty good one.
"What worked 12 years ago WON'T work today"! News Flash: These are CLASSIC characters precisely BECAUSE they need very little changed to appeal to a large audience! Hell, Scorpion and Ryu have barely changed at all and people STILL love playing them!

Overall, I think DmC: DmC, or DmC² as I like to call it, is a decent game. It's gameplay, while not close to the depth of DMC4, still delivered, and unlike that game, DmC² at least had environmental variety without huge backtracking for the second half, nor repeating bosses. Limbo was easily the best part of the game, with great detailed and changing environments. It was a finished game, and the adjustments of the Definitive Edition were greatly appreciated. What really brings this game down are its characters, deliverance of story, and unmemorable bosses and enemies. Because the base idea of the game isn't bad, but it's the way it's presented.
@@covier7191 That is true. Sadly, he's the only one. Some might count Vergil, but he's just a copy of Vergil from DMC3, and the lead up to the battle is bad. Plus, it's made retroactively worse by Vergil's Downfall stating that Vergil was always weaker, so of course we were supposed to win. Compare this to how Vergil initially wiped the floor with Dante, setting him up to be Dante's and the player's rival.

Well put, 100% agree
@@mcfry13 I would say dantes gameplay in 4 is better than DmCs because in DmC the gameplay is too easy where as in 4 you could play dante in a variety of ways and pull off complex but enjoyable moves to help you get better and challenge you. DmC's gameplay gets rid of that challenge and now you can spam the same attack to keep up your style meter
press x. you cant lose if you mash x.

Oof. The 7th generation era was just not a good time for Japanese developers. They got blinded to pander the western market in spite of the western market like their games for being essentially Japanese.
But hey, these days Japanese developers are nailing it. Mostly!

Blame Inafune.

When you entered new areas, they would become corrupted and you'd see what it really is, the world that's obscured from human eyes.

It's cool in certain ways, and at certain times, but that's just the window dressing. What makes Dante great is that he's the Bruce Campbell of video game action heroes. I kinda lump this game into the same category as Other M, where it has solid enough gameplay (Especially DMC DMC), but goddamn does the story and the characters drag it down so far.
Not that DMC stories have ever been great or anything, but I'd prefer nothing over what DMC DMC tried to do.

I was honestly on the fence about buying DMC when it came out, after my initial guttural response of "oh god this looks awful why would any one do this" I started talking myself down and began reassuring myself that I needed to give it a chance, but then I saw that "not in a million years" clip they were literally advertising with, took it as a direct slap to the face, and swore to never touch it.

oh man, you didn't add my favorite comment - kat's not like those other devil may cry girls, she's a strong female character (paraphrasing).
or anything about how the definitive edition was basically made from stolen mods from the fan community and that's why there's no definitive edition on the pc.

The combat seems so simple and the Blue/Red feels so forced
Surprised you didn’t mention the time when Ninja Theory publicly made fun of original Dante for being “gay”. Weird that they’d try to insult someone over sexuality when their version was a statutory rapist too.
wdym staturary rapist?
Cuz games journalists suck

That whole controversy is one of the biggest ones I endured as a Devil May Cry fan as I followed UA-camr EventStatus throughout it all live as it was happening. Capcom Dante:
Surfer cool dude who has cheesy and cleaver lines, who doesn't drink or smoke, and rarely cusses. He taught enemys to have fun for himself, players loved him, cause he wasn't a edgy cringe.
Ninja theory Donte:

I thought the game a pretty great level design that was really imaginative imo
This game was my first entry into the franchise, and I liked it! I was like "whoa, if this game is awesome, how awesome are the other games?"
AND they, especially three and five were ABSOLUTELY AMAZING!!!!
man you got the best possible outcome that's impressive
The fact Larry Butz is representing capcom's thought process is hilarious
ehhhh my first game into the series was DmC: Devil May Cry.
Honestly I prefer the ninja theory dante as he has a character arc and grows in the game while I dont feel that with the other dante at all
So glad DMC 5 worked so well for Capcom, thank god!
Smh.
Definitive Edition didn't actually release on PC.
why would they, the definitive edition was just them stealing mods people made on pc to make DmC even the slightest bit less dogshit in the first place.
I get that, I was just correcting Matt because he said it launched on Xbox One, PS4 and PC. But DE wasn't on PC.
I'm so glad Dmc5 saved this franchise

The mainstream movie industry left the chat.
14:09 another level to that is that the story that was there was incredibly good when it wanted to be and subtle for the people that enjoyed that. It felt like a fundamental misunderstanding on both fronts to be like “we need a better story” when the story was already good “we need a story focused game” when the story to fans was always secondary
Man, I'd somehow forgotten how much of a twerp Tameem was during the buildup to this game. XD

Soon!
"what was cool back then isn't cool now" bro i cringed through the entirety of DmC
Even though DMC 2 was the worst, it was by far my favorite Dante design!

DMC is the Nickleback of the franchise.
The Bob Barbas fight was incredibly memorable to me, but yeah, this basically sums it up.
Dante doesn't even really seem to break a sweat until he enters his Devil Trigger. Compare this to how Vergil initially wiped the floor with Dante, setting him up to be Dante's and the player's rival.
Never forget that Egoraptor Arin defended this game AND both the new Dante's character and his inclusion in PS All-Stars
