Why is Vergil so obsessed with power? Would you believe me if I tell you that it all comes from Vergil feeling inferiority? This Devil May Cry 5 analysis will be diving deep into explaining Vergil's Inferiority.

something to add - when Vergil was attacked as a child, it was his devil trigger which saved him, which I don't think its had to argue that that solidified a notion of "the demon keeps me safe" as a sort of emotional shield or crutch., as it wasn't other people or Dante or his mother which saved him, it was himself and only a part himself which allowed him to survive. If only he had control of it sooner, he could have protected them as well.
Reading deeply into the DMC3 line "Foolishness Dante, foolishness. Might controls everything, and without strength you cannot protect anything, let alone yourself." develops, to me, Vergil's hierarchy of needs, which I believe holds true for DMC5.
Vergil's mother died because he wasn't strong, he was a liability that caused his own traumatic childhood, in his mind, so:
If you are strong, you can protect yourself, and not cause others to suffer on your behalf.
If you are stronger still, you can protect others from a situation of even being presented the choice of suffering on your behalf.
culminating in "if i'm strong enough, an emotional bond can never cause pain".
In my mind, a crystalline coping mechanism, writ large.
For Vergil, I never got the notion that he wanted power for power's sake, even in a sense of satisfying a complex, what I think he wants is control. it just happens that power allows a lot of control.
Control is also all over Vergil's mannerism, speech patterns, posture, fighting style, hair style, even the written word is a far more controlled method of expression. He values control, the concept of control and, consciously or otherwise, displays control.
To him, power is the currency of control, not the other way around, as he never revels in the display of power nor in the feeling of it, unlike Arkham.
Fast forward to DMC5, we have a Vergil who clearly has power, but is losing control. (easily tossing and ripping Nero's arm off, but also degrading rapidly) He doesn't have the strength to protect himself, he's back at the base of his hierarchy of needs. So, in order to regain control, he gain's power. And it seems like he knew the full plan prior to separation, human form will buy time while the demon gains strength, to then rejoin at a later time. Once Vergil is in control of himself again he takes no issue with destroying the very thing which granted him power.
Given how V had the memories, but not Urizen, strikes me as a very specific point on his psychology, that his humanity is in control, always. If demon and human sides were unified, one would expect both to consciously have some memories, but this is not the case as is seen in the eating of the fruit scene. The fruit seemed to create an illusion of the setting which is the purpose of gaining power, Vergil's childhood home - power to protect. But Urizen wasn't conscious of it, to speculate further, this tells us that Vergil treats his demonhood as a tool, and nothing more, to protect his humanity and what he values.
On the surface one can say Vergil's humanity is weak and his demonic side is more of what Vergil is , but I think that's incorrect. I think V is so frail because Vergil is overly protective of his humanity, he's never wanting to risk it, instead, he keeps his demon side at arms-length, controlled, and develops that to protect himself.
edit: to add, I think the reason we see him grow as a character by reflecting on top of the tree is that his humanity finally had its own experiences and growth on its own, without relying on the demon side to handle or shield him. He took a walk outside of his shell.

I love that lil wistful tone to his voice when Vergil says to Dante that he is perfectly capable of handling this by himself. And Dante just shrugs and says he's to need some help. The motion Vergil makes just before the twins get attacked again is almost hesitant. The man has the emotional range of a teacup. But including (and yes I know it is not canon) seeing the stiff and awkward body language of Vergil as he sits next to Nero in the van is a perfect example that he is in fact a very timid socially awkward man who can't communicate his feelings properly

Actually now the ending of DMC 5 does make more sense, okay just the part where Virgil just goes along with what Nero wants. Nero was very clearly trying to stop the two of them because he cared about them. Maybe it finally clicked for Vergil that that's why Dante has been fighting him all this time, because they just want him to take a fucking chill pill.

I'm thinking that if he knew Nero was his son/had a little more time, i.e. wasn't _literally about to die in what may have been just a few h o u r s,_ he would have summoned the Yamato from Nero's arm instead of ripping it off as a shortcut. Maybe even try to speak with Nero, but that's unlikely because convincing someone takes precious time Vergil didn't have.
He must have realised on some level that Nero is not fully human, since the arm is evidently demonic, but he would have had no time to contemplate Nero's features or the van or any context clues that would lead him to believe Nero was his son. After all, even for Dante, it was the Yamato DT that confirmed Nero was Vergil's son - and Vergil never saw that reaction because he took the Yamato back.
TL;DR: Neither Vergil nor Nero can ever catch a break, wtf

  • @scivoid
    @scivoid 5 років тому +1121

I think it's also interesting to analyze his Demon half - Urizen. Vergil didn't just cast out his human half but everything he saw as weak within himself. The Nightmares that V uses to fight, the fact Urizen doesn't even remember the house he grew up in, the fact Urizen went on to give the Nelo Angelo treatment to Lady and Trish.
All those memories went to V, Urizen was left with no distractions other than his mission of gaining more power and beating Dante. Of course the irony here is that all those memories and feelings are what kept V moving forward despite his body on the cusp of breaking down with every step of the way.
Can't wait for the Nero episode! Nero perfectly combines the two brother's motivation:
Gain more **Power** *to* **Protect** others.

I think the best part about Vergil in the end is that when he was remade by Urizen and V reuniting, he was actually a lot more human in action than before. I mean, the very fact that he even questions his and Dante's fates being different is proof enough. All the character development that V went through was brought into Vergil's character as well.
And I dunno about you, but Dante seemed to actually _like_ Vergil by the end of it. He seemed happy to fight with him in Hell for who knew how long, and it _wasn't_ a fight to the death. It just... looked like brotherly sparring, filled with a competitive but not angry edge. I mean for fuck's sake; VERGIL SMILED AT DANTE AND EVERYTHING. More than once and without sarcasm or hate to be seen.
They're both still noticeably different from each other, but I think if nothing else, Vergil's ideology evolved to be more like Nero's and Dante's; gain power not to never be emotional or inferior again, but to protect that which is important and cared for in your life. After all, I'm quite sure Vergil discovered a care for Nero through V's own helpful friendship with the boy, and saw enough respect in Dante to actually care for him as well. Or, at least, to not hate him anymore.
But, I'm not incredibly introspective nor all that versed in DMC first-hand. The only one I've played was DMC5 even though I've watched a good deal of the others, though I still feel like Vergil is a different person when he finally reemerges at the end of the game. Different than any incarnation of himself ever before.
And, probably as a surprise to himself, he'll likely just get stronger from from his human half being more prominent.
EDIT: Oh, and, also? I think it's pretty neat in a subtle way that Vergil and Dante respectively separate and combine in someway in their home, but Vergil has his back to the painting of his family as he separates, while Dante faces it as he combines with Devil Sword Sparda and transforms.

It's a reference to the Book of Revelation, the final book in the bible. It means the beginning and the end, signifying Vergil started it all and will be at the end. Much like Virgil guided Dante through Inferno and Purgatorio in Divine Comedy until Dante reached Paradiso. Dante song calls him the Omega, in DMC terms, that's them always fighting in the end. It's just a simple biblical reference, it has nothing to do with describing Vergil as God.

DMC2 feels like a filler arc tbh lol. It adds a bit of context on why after 1 and especially the anime (yes i watched it and im not disappointed) Dante seems to silent. Even in the early parts of DMC4 where Dante oddly silent all the time when fighting Nero.

Also the fact that the animals V used were personifications of Vergils trauma and nightmares and in the end of DMC5 they refused to combine back with Vergil and suicided by Dante, and I think that really helped with his mental state. Would love if this was further explored in DMC6

  • @Sioolol

In Vergils last battle with Dante, he was ready to lose. He knew he would lose to dante and accepted it. Thats why he was so calm and phylosophical, even friendly to Dante. His expirience as V helped with it. He was prepared to die in that fight.
Thats why he was much softer in the end of DMC5. He actualy, finaly, accepted his humanity, just as Dante accepted his demonic part. This can lead to incredibly interesting character development in future games, if they be released a bit sooner than in 12 fucking years, lol.

I do agree but in a slightly different way. I think considering the little conversation he had with himself on top of the tree, basically being like "Why am I such a dick? Would I be this way if I had lived Dante's life?" I think he knew that he couldn't and wouldn't stop himself from trying to do it again and he said "let's finish this, Dante." and he kept talking about all things coming to end while he was fighting with Dante because he knew that the only person capable of stopping him was Dante - until he found out about Nero being his son. Even in the fight with Nero you can tell he was taking it easy on him. His character isn't as focused and his attacks aren't as methodical. You can tell he is "distracted" and even his response when Nero asks if he accepts him as his son, his response is weird. "Your existence or your strength", you can tell that the fight has gone from life and death, to testing his son's skills, to see if he is capable of stepping up to the plate of being the one to protect humanity from enemies that are as powerful as himself (currently the demon king as far as power goes.)

Vergil was shown in the manga to love poetry specifically in the manga. He went so far as to write his name in the back of a poetry book just so dante wouldnt take it. He stopped by a poetry shop DAILY just to read it. Vergils trauma also can come from the fact that he was stabbed with his own sword by devils. Sadly for them it awakened his demon powers and he quickly murdered them all. Another thing to note is Vs demons. They carry the nightmares from his days as mundus servent. Its a hold of his weakness. His powerlessness. Thus its important to note he cast that off as well. A part of his humanity that adds to his disgust.

It's funny cause despite Vergil thinking his emotions lead to his weakness, I think some of his strongest moments in the games he is when he shows some semblance of compassion. A perfect moment is in DMC 3 when he and Dante are in the demon collapsing demon realm. As Dante moves to grab Vergil from falling, Vergil cuts Dante's hand stopping him and possibly saving Dante from the fate Vergil faced as nelo angelo.

I think it's more based on their personality and at the same time, it doesn't matter at all which sword gets which.
For my first point, Dante was more outgoing, and is closer to his mother Eva which in Sparda's eyes, the definition of Humanity's compassion. Maybe Sparda thought that Dante would inherit more of his mother's personality and humanity. But I dont think it matters much since whoever gets which sword can stop the other person since both swords are the opposite of one another. Rebellion can unify while Yamato severe

A job well done indeed. However, if I may add a piece of mind regarding Vergil, I strongly believe he loved Dante in a weird way. He does not only view him as an obstacle, but also part of what he wants to protect. The day of the trauma he experienced the helplessness of feeling he lost everything due to his lack of power and he seeks to feel in complete control so as to never again having to suffer that kind of pain that comes form the loss of loved ones.
Also, although he made questionable things, he doesn't hate humanity either I believe because he had a son with a human and he had the chance to kill Lady in dmc 3 at the library, which he could have done easily, yet he just ignored her even though he clearly knew she was there and she had kinda fucked up his plan in that moment of the plot to some extent. On top of that, the day of the trauma he felt abandoned by his mom whom he clearly cared a lot.
Overall I've always perceived him as someone who just wants to feel in complete control of his life to be able to protect what and who he feels dear to him.
He's really relatable to me regarding the control aspect because I struggled with depression or maybe I was close to depression in the past due to things that had not been turning out the way I expected in life after putting effort into them, which led me to feel powerless and to feel I needed to find a way to control my life when in reality what I needed to do was come to terms with the lack of control one has in life regarding those things and try to better myself to overcome the helplessness.

He is misguided and lost, not evil, and if he didn't have powers or access to relics as world-changing as e.g., the Temen-ni-gru, his mistakes would not have resulted in as much destruction of life as they did. one interesting piece of evidence that could make virgil's psychology more interesting is when Nero unlocked his devil trigger with Yamato, is talks in a state of trance speaking to himself in what first sounds like it's about him, but carries shades of virgils motives.
"From that day forth... my arm changed... and a voiced echoed... power... give me more power! And if I become a demon, so be it, I will endure the exile.... Anything to protect her."
The voice echoeing is clearly a memory of Vergil, since Yamato is just a shortcut to Nero's imperfect devil trigger. What Vergil says can easily be related to the loss of his mother, but we also need to remember that Nero is his son which means Vergil had the ability to love another human once too. This might be a hint that his aspirations for power also linked someone else he loved, but possibly also lost.
Towards the end of DMC5 Vergil laughs when he finds out Nero is his son, and simply says That was a long time ago. This might show that he possibly tried to be a good guy once, but that might have ended tragically.

    • @ChampionAnalysis
      @ChampionAnalysis  4 роки тому +16

That "long time ago" line struck me as a little off too. It could very well be like you said that Vergil did have some sort of affection in the past for someone. I always attributed his decision to have Nero as more of a practical one (to ensure Sparda's legacy contonues) from understanding who Vergil is after what we've seen. But that's just speculation of course. So one can equally speculate that vergil was capable of loving someone. I do want to talk about that line Nero says in my Nero video :D I didnt consider it stemming from Vergil, but it definitely sounds plausible to me.

"Literature often serves as an emotional outlet" - or, alternatively, and just hear me out here, it turns out that deep down and beneath the literally compulsive obsession with power that the day his family was attacked by demons instilled in him, Vergil's just genuinely into poetry and books and probably shakespeare, probably in no small part because that matches up with everything else about him as a foil to his brother. Dante kind of seems like he probably never actually went to school, while Vergil seems like it's possible he actually has a degree in something, presumably from some place that had a professor digging into some nearby ruins that, once understood and unlocked, revealed a gate to hell or some other ancient artifact, which he disappeared immediately after finding.

I will forever love DMC5 for fixing Vergil. Before now, he was pretty one-dimensional, but we finally see him reflecting on what he's done in the game. He's betrayed his own humanity, sacrificed thousands maybe millions just for power, and for what? By the end, it was simply to be better than Dante. He felt inferior to his own brother, but Dante showed real growth and grew in greater ways. Vergil finally understands this, and at the end, wants to fight Dante just to either finally win or to die trying. It's only until Nero enlightens him to how things aren't just about power, that both Nero and Dante DO still care for him. After all he's done, they still cared because he was family, and what had he done? He had tried to kill Dante simply to get the power to... Protect his family... Dante. At the time, his only known relative. And yet had already betrayed him. That these people, these HUMANS, were both stronger AND proudly part human, he couldn't compare. He knew he had been wrong all along and finally, FINALLY, sees the picture. His humanity was never weakness. He was wrong.

I also think, that his reason behind his obssesion for power changed after being Nelo Angelo, before that, his reason was to not feel the weakness and despair like when he was Young, again (as you explained), but after being corrupted by Mundus, i think he could have held on to three things, so as not to lose the little that he was left of himself, The amulet, his pursuit of power and Dante (Because Dante was the last and more fresh memory he had before losing against Mundus).
The amulet dissapeared after dmc1, so the only two left, were the power and Dante. But his body and mind was so damaged (We have to remember that he was turned into a puppet-demon for over a decade) that i don't think he could really remember the original reason of this two. The only thing he could remember is that he needed power and that he needed to defeat Dante, because this are the only two things left that keep him being himself. This two are like a mantra that he repeat over an over again to remember who is he.
So when he divided himself into Urizen and V. Urizen is driven by the corrupted reason meanwhile V, is being driven for the original reason (Don't feel again thoses awful emotions). And then finally, when Urizen and V get merge together, Vergil returns to the original reason. (and maybe, he gets a new and better one)

I never played Dark Siders :o but as for Vergil's mother, yeah that would further add onto his feelings of inferiority. Vergil probably questions why his brother was chosen over him which he can then take as a sign of him being inferior. Although its irrational, its most likely what he feels cause of that trauma.

@@cheekyfantasy1314 right that's the reasoning that we got from him. But often times we aren't aware of deep rooted feelings we have. So what we're talking about is that vergil may have these feelings from his trauma despite not being fully aware of them. Didn't V say that he ( meaning Vergil) was outside in the playground, by the little green rocking-horse, when all hell broke loose at the family home?
If I have remembered that correctly, then sadly, there is no way Eva could have protected him too. He was doomed to suffer alone.
I love Vergil. I'll always be #TeamBlue 💙 I don't believe he is evil. Not then, not now. He is just lost, misguided and alone. He needs to heal is wounds and so does Dante. They need to be together. They need each other. One coin...two sides. Ice with Fire. A balance needs to be struck. I hope this will happen in the next game.

I think the final fight was just Dante and Vergil playing arround with Nero. I think that the real Vergil, real incarnation of himself was V. How he seeked help from Dante without Dante having any hatred towards him anymore and being happy he's alive and not dead. And what he saw in Nero when he was with him. Actual dedication to gain more power even if he is brittle as glass and coming to dante who can delete him in 1 swipe, only to reimerge as himself again and help Dante and Nero slay some demon ass

So this is why Vergil thanks Nero before he leaves to go to the top of the Qliphoth. Nero showed Vergil to not completely hate his human side, but that it has its strengths. Kinda like how Lady showed Dante that in DMC3. Hence why at the end cutscene for DMC5, Vergil actually laughs with Dante and has fun with his brother fighting in the underworld. Finally smiles, enjoys company with his brother, and accepts the power he already has. Never really occurred to me that Nero was right beside his father basically the entire game. He talked with V over and over.
