The Wilson sisters are incredible, and indeed Anne is one of the greatest singers, ever.....but if you want to appreciate a singer with a FIVE octave range....listen to Minnie Riperton sing Loving You 🎤
I know people talk about Stevie Nicks and the like as the greatest female rock voice of all time, but for me nobody has ever been better than Ann Wilson !!
Ann is one of the most dynamic singers. She has ridiculous power, intonation and range, but it’s her crazy dynamics that really sell her songs. She powers into some notes, but really eases into other notes, starting softly and building up to a powerful ending. Just listen to the different dynamics she uses. It’s just incredible. She is one of the greatest rock singers, not just female singer, but singer period! She is a legend and deservedly so.
Her phrasing kills me. She's telling a story, she's always telling a story and while she will shape the notes to her liking you will understand. Now I'll go watch her do Stairway to Heaven again with Nancy and Jason and a giant choir that couldn't bury her. Ann is the biz. For real.
Bruce Willis suffered with a stammer as a kid.. he got the nick name buck buck.. it was acting on stage and singing that helped him with it.. bit of a fun fact :)
Beth, I wish you could have seen and heard Heart back when I first knew them. Though the band was from Seattle, they called my Vancouver, Canada, home for their early years. The first time I saw them was at a high school dance night, just before they had their first hit album with Dreamboat Annie. Standing five feet from the stage was an incredible experience and Ann's vocals are an amazing experience from that close. As you can imagine, the teenage boys made Ann and Nancy Wilson the talk of countless adulatory conversations for months afterward, yet I was enamoured with the entire band's performance. I saw them many times after that, playing at the local roller skating rinks and free concerts on the city parks, as well as the numerous clubs I could bluff my teenage self into at that time. I saw the band so many times, they began to recognise me in the crowds, though we never spoke. In those early years, Heart played a mix of R&B, Rock, a heavy Led Zeppelin influence and Gypsy/Roma Folk. Ann also often played flute to augment her vocals. They were truly unique, as no other group sounded remotely like them. The last time I saw them, August 27 1978,, was as the closing act of a multi-band show at Empire Stadium, the same place where Roger Bannister first broke the four minute mile. I was in the fourth or fifth row of a crowd of over 45,000, the day filled with solid bands and long delays under the crushing August sun. As Heart took the stage, the sun was setting and a wonderfully cooling breeze wafted over us from the Pacific Ocean. The lights from Grouse Mountain, a warming backdrop across the inlet, over the foothills where I lived. When the band first arrived, Ann noticed me and smiled, letting her sister know I was there. After a quick smile and nod from Ann, they opened the full day's finale and brought us all to a crescendo of both hard rocking and gorgeous ballads, taking the occasion to introduce us to songs from their latest album, the amazing Dog and Butterfly. I wish you could have seen Ann and Nancy and the rest of Heart at this time, Beth. I'm sure you'd have been as mesmerised as I was. Ann and Nancy kept the Heart name after the original band broke up but, to me, they were never the same. The variety of styles and sounds they played was never equaled, despite the bigger hits the sisters enjoyed during the 80s. I was blessed to hearing them in those early years, as I had been with so many bands and singers who would go on to bigger fame afterwards. I grew up in a magical time for live music ♥
Ann - the epitome of greatness. I sang my guts out in the early 70's, singing and playing in bands because of icons like Ann, Robert Plant and Ian Gillan.
such a good song with cool transitions it goes through and i don't know when the last time they played together but holy crap what a dynamic duo they are such good musicianship
If i recall correctly, she is/was a HUGE Zeppelin fan, and Robert Plant as well. Sometimes you hear a little of Plants influence :) . But... Ms Wilson is EVERYTHING
With 16 or 60... This woman can sing ! 💖 I' m a huge fan since the Barracuda days. First I was a little bit disappointed, because there was no other such a "burner" on the album "Little Queen", but after listening closely I loved it. ❤️
I remember way back in the early 70s they were playing in a small club in Vancouver Washington. We were a block away walking down the sidewalk and could hear her singing and how our whole family was amazed with her voice!
Their Heart, Live in Seattle, 2002 concert is amazing. They do "Alone" and "These Dreams" on a back to back video. Worth a listen! They also do "Dog and the Butterfly", another beautiful song.
Got to see them live in 1981 in their home town of Seattle. As you might guess - it was a crazy (good) concert!! They’re an amazing band; Ann and Nancy are both powerhouses… epic!! Thanks for a great reaction, and a nice memory!!
My favorite female Rock singer (Nancy too!). They were so good when they were at the peak of their powers and I was fortunate to live through those times as a young lad becoming musically aware and discovering all of the great music of that era. Heart is definitely up there in my book. They were unique especially during the times. Ann and Nancy were ground-breakers and blew everyone's mind. Bravo...
Ann has imo the best voice of the whole rock and roll genre: how it cuts thru the mix, that presence... feels like its litteraly physically reaching and touching thru.
Anne and Nancy seemed so sexy to me back then. I wasn't quite as old as they were, but part of their appeal to me was both the way they belted out the sound, and their stunning appearance. They had the completely natural look that prevailed at that time.
Heart and nacy etc puts sass in the vocals.. the little endings to a phrase and the oooh parts are like she's sending a message without having words in so much of this song and others.
Loved this video on Barracuda it's another excellent breakdown from you Beth. I really would like to see you do a video on the up and coming band Brave Rival as their dual lead singers often draw comparisons with the Wilson sisters and they have even covered this very track.
They started out as a bar band here in the Seattle area. When I first saw them there band was called White Heart. Small town girls from Brier Washington.
Oh how this makes me happy. My favorite female singer being listened to by my favorite female reviewer. Beth I’m so happy that you love and appreciate the music from the 70’s, my opinion is that it was the greatest era ever for rock. Hope you have a wonderful day and much love from Texas❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
I really Love Heart!! Both Ann & Nancy Wilson really Rocked my 1970s & continued through the '80s. Heart really gave the guy rock bands a run for their money. Heart is Stiff competition for guy bands & Nancy Wilson can instruct some of 'em on guitar playing. Heart ROCKS!!
I’ve commented this on many a reaction video on this channel and others. If you want to see Ann and Nancy sing an amazing duet together I strongly recommend their cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Battle of Evermore” off their “Alive in Seattle” set. It is stunningly good. I’m fact it’s one of the best covers of any song by any band I’ve ever seen and I really just want one of my favorite vocal coach channels to validate my opinion. Lol.

Ann can still do it really well these days. It's a bit rougher but I kinda dig it. Would be fun to see a comparison between this and one more recent version she has on her UA-cam channel.
So ready to see her July 15th in Mequon, Wi..6 miles from my house. Eat your heart out..anyone who is not a Heart fan. We'll cheer for you, Beth 🎉🎉🎉😅😅😅🍺🍺🍺
Heart have always sounded better live than on their albums. If you're interested, there's an absolutely flawless rendition of "Dreamboat Annie" from Midnight Special (1977, I think). It's truly special.
There was nothing better than the old Heart band Ann Wilson's voice is insane she gets up there really high this is a great song but Magic Man is my favorite and Crazy On You is great also
Heart minus Ann was the regular cover band at a night club my friends and I went to in Vancouver Canada in the early 1970s. She could sing everything well. lots of fun times dancing to heart.
There's a great live cover of this song by Alice in chains and Gretchen Wilson on youtube that stood the hair on the back of my neck up. Phenomenal. But Heart set the standard. 40+ years later, and this vocal track still plows buildings down!!
The Wilson sisters were a strong 1-2 punch in the 1970's, didn't really like their music in the 80's when they turned more mainstream but they had some of the best albums of the 70's.
Gretchen Wilson performed a cover of this and at first and I had serious doubts about it because I didn't think anyone could do it justice compared to Ann. However, I was seriously impressed and wish I could have personally apologized to Gretchen for doubting her.
So much of this album was done in Canada, that it is actually considered “Canadian Content”, so it got played a lot as 25% of what was broadcast had to meet that criteria.
@@SaverioP Yes! The video seems a little blurry but I bet someone with excellent editing skills could put the actual live audio on the better video. She sang this around 5 years ago, and she sounded just as good as when it came out.
The Wilson sisters have immense talent.

Barracuda is one of my favourite Heart songs. The power and clarity when she belts it out is amazing

Yes, they had many hits later on, but for me the early songs will always be their best.
Loved early Heart too. This song and Magic Man are my favourites.
Vocal reactors like you are resurrecting (for the young audience) great artists who deserved much better than what they had
Ann - the epitome of greatness. I sang my guts out in the early 70's, singing and playing in bands because of icons like Ann, Robert Plant and Ian Gillan.
Just one of the greatest rock voices. That main riff is also pretty classic.
I was fortunate to meet Nancy back in 2000 (she bought a puppy from us) and she was super nice, great to talk to.
Ann's voice is a powerhouse, Nancy's is sweet.
You beat me to it.
