Just want you to know...your vlogs are works of art in EVERY episode! I was raised in large family. We grew big gardens, to help with food bills! My grandma, who had been one of 13 children, was an "expert" on gardening and canning. We had many wonderful talks while weeding, picking or planning garden. I loved those peaceful and productive moments. As oldest girl, I lined up with Momma and grandma in our kitchen every day, throughout all seasons...preparing meals, freezing and canning, baking, chopping, peeling, labelling, prepping. When I married, my hubby and I moved to country home with nice land acreage. We made a big, quarter acre garden. Worked at canning, freezing, drying. Hunted and fished, bought other needs from farmers and local butcher. Did it for 30 years, sharing garden bounties, as well as our venison, fish, wild turkey...sport successes! Upon my hubby's death, I had to move to suburbia, due to health reasons. I put two raised garden beds in my tiny backyard. I slowly stocked my pantry, adding farmers market items, freezing...and preparing for winter months to come. Then...covid rumors started. My four young Marine veteran relatives came to me, wanting to make sure I could "get started on prepping" for any kind of disasters coming. Imagine their surprised looks when I shyly showed them...my FOUR filled storage areas of canned, bottled and food safety buckets of essential ingredients...plus two freezers...and filled walk-in pantry closet in kitchen. All labelled and organized. Enough food for ALL our families. I told them I did it so if times got mean or lean, my home would be big enough to shelter all, and we wouldnt go hungry! I also prepped with candles, kerosene, heaters, propane grill, weapons and ammo, bedding and warm blankets, extra air mattresses, soaps, tp, matches, lighters, tools, security devices. One said, jokingly,"I think you could teach a prepper class at Paris Island!" lol! As a newlywed, our nearest store in country was an hour away on windy, winding roads, then another hour trip back. So, I learned young, to start making my "own store" in our basement, by watching ads, buying on sale, sometimes whole case, other times, few "on sale" extra cans or jars. Garden helped most, then just filled in what was necessary or desired. Yep...love your vlogs, you are teaching lost skills to younger generations, as well as helping older adults prep too! Love your decorating...and your aprons! Best of all though, I find myself smiling softly, content, because of your Faith and good heart...your inner beauty of heart and soul...shines like a welcoming, beckoning candle in the window of a stormy night. I love it when I come educational information that intentionally teaches a lost or dying art. I hate to actually have to say that with my mouth about things such as cooking, canning vegetables, raising a garden, hunting or fishing for the purpose of eating and not just for sport There's so many things in this day and age that are not passed down to this generation. Unfortunately this generation are Masters at looking good and taking pride in their physical body but they are lacking so many essential skills and abilities. I'm afraid that if they don't have the modern conveniences of everyday life, many of them would surely and quickly perish from this Earth

"Pantrying" is exactly what this is. I love when you said that the act makes the pantry a verb. I guess my family has been doing this forever since we cooked many of our meals at home growing up. We always bought many things in bulk for economical reasons, and had a stock of things as we bake quite a bit. I am really intentional about this now because of minimizing food waste, and I think that using up old scraps is a great way to be more creative and break from usual recipes. Sometimes I will search for recipes that include ingredients I already have instead of having to go buy things to cook something. In this way, there is less waste and I can be a little more creative in what I get to eat.
This is going to one of my focuses for January. I have two cabinets that need to be completely cleaned and reorganized. I’ve been gradually shifting from plastic containers to glass for example Mason Jars for both pantry and fridge.
@@ellen823ful This is a great way to repurpose storage. My mom always said "why throw out the jar, I've already paid for it!" lol It was second nature to wash and reuse for us growing up. They definitely come in handy when you have a bunch that match too.
9:40 I think this is why "pantrying" is slowly being replaced by grocery stores full of heavily processed connivence foods. The reason is time. Nobody has enough of it in this modern 'go go' world. Thanks for this video. It's inspiring; slow and gentle.
We've had tv dinners since the fifties. These things were conveniences for us housewives. Lesson learned: do not shirk duties and don't think it's saving time. Nothing is free, there's always a price to pay. They wouldn't sell it if we didn't want it. I could spend two hrs a day cooking, besides homeschool and every other things I have to do. But I know the cost of not making the time...my children's health and even their very lives.
When the first supermarket entered the scene, 1946, the world was at war. Many women either worked in factories to help the efforts of defense or to make ends meet. Later Men were either coming home injured or not at all so the trend continued. Then it became more acceptable for women to have careers outside of home. This took away from the attention and time required to do things old school such as described in this video. There seems to be a returning to more traditional ways nearly 100 years later. Perhaps we will turn things around, victory gardens and all.
I really love and appreciate that you showed the less the cute section of your storage (the store bought stuff). You made living beautifully feel attainable. Genuinely, thank you for that.
When I transitioned part of my income stream into care, I was surprised how many elders continue to have root cellars & real pantries. I'm glad & encourage it.
Your message should go viral. People need this now more than ever......even if they don't understand it. I grew up this way. This is my heritage. It is edifying to our lives. :)
The reason why I told my partner, that I want our apartment, is the lovely little pantry we have in the kitchen. I literally fell in love with it and we mainly keep powdery products like flour, noodles, rice, cornflakes, tea and Chinese seasoning and pickled vegetables. It gives me so much joy to know that I have what I need when I bake or cook, without panicking that I have to go to the grocery store last minute. My pantry makes me very happy!
After moving from a big city to a cottage in the middle of nowhere, 6 yrs ago, “pantrying” is something I am now an expert in, taught myself to grow, forage, and preserve, very rarely need to go to grocery store. Something I think we all need to learn
I like that your family doesn't totally rely on one avenue of obtaining the food you need to feed yourselves. And having a 'Working Pantry' is key to ensuring food doesn't SPOIL because it's just sitting there. I have been in love with growing food since I was young and helping my grandmother. It’s only bees in the last five years or so that I have been learning to preserve, buy in bulk only what I can’t grow (grains, beans) and learning how to store it. It’s now a passion. Kaetlyn, you should do a video on canning how to! I bet there are many people, like myself, who grow a garden each year and end up giving away or throwing out a lot of what has been grown because it cannot be eaten in time/it goes bad. I have no clue about canning and everywhere online seems to have different/conflicting information. Also I wonder, how cool is your basement for storing the jars? What would be an idea temperature? Beautiful video as always 🤍
I will certainly consider that for this years growing season! I would recommend starting with Ball Canning or Melissa K. Norris- two reputable sources for canning and they only share safe recipes and methods. Our basement is probably on average 50-60F maybe a bit higher? It fluctuates. But it's definitely cooler than the rest of our house which we keep 68F during the day and 65F at night. I should put a thermometer down there and see for sure! Canned goods are ideal at 50-70 degrees and kept in the dark. Thank you Amanda! ❤

I survived Katrina/Rita I was REALLY clobbered... I thought I could prepare for another..but IDA REALLY terrified me ...I came VERY close to no non perishable food for me..I Did prep for my pet... but I am going to start preparing again .I DO grow all year long in my container garden..but this reminded me to do better❤️
Love this! I grew up on a mountain, so we had to stock up on food and consumables because we only went into town once a week. I now live in the middle of the city for most of the year, but stocking my pantry is still ingrained in me.
I love this video. My family has always had a large pantry. I’ve been so thankful this winter that I’ve rarely had to go to the grocery store and eating garden vegetables in delicious soups and other dishes when there is 6 inches of snow is sooooo grounding and satisfying.
I’m new to your channel and I’m so excited to learn how to prepare a full pantry without waste. What you are sharing is almost a lost art and I would like to learn more even though there are a few grocery stores close to my house. I wish I have a cool basement to store food. Blessings!
I'm not sure if Mr. Salatin is making a distinction between "Supermarket" and "Grocery stores" but the first grocery store to open in the US was a Piggly Wiggly in Tennessee in September 1916 during the Great War. You'll be hard pressed to find an old Southerner like me who didn't grow up at least hearing that stores name. It is synonymous with the South. A great many pounds of dry beans, cornmeal and coffee would have been bought back in the day to use for "pantrying" as you call it. A very impressive lifestyle you lead! It's remarkable to see a young person use the old ways as you do. And you present it so well. A lot of young and old folks could be benefit greatly from your wisdom and ways. Interesting! I'll have to go back and read that part of his book. My take was he was referencing larger chain stores that have grown into almost a monopoly of the food industry. I think I should have made the point clearer in my video that I'm not advocating for "doing it all" or avoiding shopping all together, but rather sourcing thoughtfully and from smaller, local stores and farms when possible. Very enlightening. Thank you. I was taught to put bay leaves in the tops of my flour, cormeal, and rice canisters. Also to leave the soil on fresh potatoes , peanuts, etc until use. I was told this kept them fresh.
I highly recommend, especially if you have deep freezers, a vaccum sealer. I love ours! We were able to reduce down many pounds of meat to flat packages. :)

I like that you call it an art. Growing up then, I can say that my mom was a great artist in pantrying. There was no internet, and you couldn’t just order your food online. I came from a middle class home, so we could always buy groceries. The way it worked then was that once every week or twice a week, she would always buy enough groceries not just for that week or two, but to fill the entire home with food consistently. We had food in our pantry, food in a food closet, food in the fridge, and food in the cupboard, food and fresh fruit in the kitchen on the counter and on the table. Of course we would eat out, but there was always food in the house, for us, for guests, for friends, and for the odd time for neighbours.
I really enjoyed the peaceful loveliness and artistry of your video. My new house will have a dedicated pantry as I would like to devote much of my time to pantrying. Will definitely adopt your word :)
I was born in 1957 and both sets of grandparents still lived that way...growing/producing their own foods and preserving them until they could grow new foods I'm the spring. I remember taking my turn at the butterchurn...exhausting but necessary work. I also remember my grandfather chopping the heads off chickens for dinner, and sitting with my grandmother away from the house plucking the chickens. One of my early memories is walking with my uncle down to the barn and the flashlight highlighting a pig that was hanging from a tree draining its blood into a tub below. I've always been aware that meats do not come prepackaged like they do from the grocery store.

Thank you for this video, I have become very interested stocking up. This past year was probably the most I’ve ever stored but still not nearly enough. I tried to store apples in my basement which stays fairly cool but unfortunately the critters found them so I made apple sauce. The music is beautiful and the filming is lovely.! Thank you for your Christmas post, it came at a time where I was having some problems that potentially could’ve cost a lot of money. You reminded me that I am in the care of a loving and powerful God who works all things for my good and everything turned out well!
So true every one pantry is different me specifically I have plenty of organic and item we use the most in my home in the summer we grow herbs to have in the winter. This does make me inspired to start being more involved with my family’s vegetable garden. It’s not big, weve got 2 vegetable patches but they seem to grow a fair amount. Currently we have some winter vegetables growing. I’d like to be more involved with the process and it’s great to know where your food comes from. Great video! :)
I started 'pantrying' and sourcing meats/veggies from local farms in late '19. Of course, there r many great reasons to pursue pantrying, however, my main objective was to re-connect w/ how I was raised. BTW....luv ur 'pantrying' term!
Hint for you.... Get yourself some organic sugar and organic molasses and make your own brown sugar. You will be BEYOND happy you did. You get 10xs as much for an 1/8th of the price. Plus you can make light or dark just by adjusting the amount of molasses you add. And it doesn't get hard like store bought. One way I help myself save money and always have a stock of it in the pantry. Please continue your wonderful videos. The way you talk about things is so calming and inspirational. Ty
I too have noticed that it's something that constantly needs "fluffed". Just this week, I reorganized one of my home canned storage areas and my cook books. It feels like a chore before I start but it turns into a pleasure as I realize how busy I've been canning and preserving nutricous foods for my family to enjoy. It's also very satisfying to know that I am 1 cog in a the wheel that is activly reducing the amount of waste I send to the land fill by growing and preserving some of our food on our land. It gives me a sneek peak at Psalms 37:29, which is deeply satisfying. I think it's so satisfying to me is I feel like Proverbs 31:15 when I participate in this kind of household activity, it feels like the role I was designed to do.

I thought I could prepare for another..but IDA REALLY terrified me ...I came VERY close to no non perishable food for me..I Did prep for my pet...
but I am going to start preparing again .I DO grow all year long in my container garden..but this reminded me to do better❤️
Love this! I grew up on a mountain, so we had to stock up on food and consumables because we only went into town once a week. I now live in the middle of the city for most of the year, but stocking my pantry is still ingrained in me.

I'm not sure if Mr. Salatin is making a distinction between "Supermarket" and "Grocery stores" but the first grocery store to open in the US was a Piggly Wiggly in Tennessee in September 1916 during the Great War. You'll be hard pressed to find an old Southerner like me who didn't grow up at least hearing that stores name. It is synonymous with the South. A great many pounds of dry beans, cornmeal and coffee would have been bought back in the day to use for "pantrying" as you call it. A very impressive lifestyle you lead! It's remarkable to see a young person use the old ways as you do. And you present it so well. A lot of young and old folks could be benefit greatly from your wisdom and ways. Hope you get a million subscribers. You deserve it. Blessings!
Interesting! I'll have to go back and read that part of his book. My take was he was referencing larger chain stores that have grown into almost a monopoly of the food industry. I think I should have made the point clearer in my video that I'm not advocating for "doing it all" or avoiding shopping all together, but rather sourcing thoughtfully and from smaller, local stores and farms when possible. Very enlightening. Thank you. I was taught to put bay leaves in the tops of my flour, cormeal, and rice canisters. Also to leave the soil on fresh potatoes , peanuts, etc until use. I was told this kept them fresh.

I like that you call it an art. Growing up then, I can say that my mom was a great artist in pantrying. There was no internet, and you couldn’t just order your food online. I came from a middle class home, so we could always buy groceries. The way it worked then was that once every week or twice a week, she would always buy enough groceries not just for that week or two, but to fill the entire home with food consistently. We had food in our pantry, food in a food closet, food in the fridge, and food in the cupboard, food and fresh fruit in the kitchen on the counter and on the table. Of course we would eat out, but there was always food in the house, for us, for guests, for friends, and for the odd time for neighbours.

I was born in 1957 and both sets of grandparents still lived that way...growing/producing their own foods and preserving them until they could grow new foods I'm the spring.
I remember taking my turn at the butterchurn...exhausting but necessary work.
I also remember my grandfather chopping the heads off chickens for dinner, and sitting with my grandmother away from the house plucking the chickens.
One of my early memories is walking with my uncle down to the barn and the flashlight highlighting a pig that was hanging from a tree draining its blood into a tub below. I've always been aware that meats do not come prepackaged like they do from the grocery store.

Thank you for this video, I have become very interested stocking up. This past year was probably the most I’ve ever stored but still not nearly enough. I tried to store apples in my basement which stays fairly cool but unfortunately the critters found them so I made apple sauce. The music is beautiful and the filming is lovely.!

So true every one pantry is different me specifically I have plenty of organic and item we use the most in my home in the summer we grow herbs to have in the winter. This does make me inspired to start being more involved with my family’s vegetable garden. It’s not big, weve got 2 vegetable patches but they seem to grow a fair amount. Currently we have some winter vegetables growing. I’d like to be more involved with the process and it’s great to know where your food comes from. Great video! :)

I started 'pantrying' and sourcing meats/veggies from local farms in late '19. Of course, there r many great reasons to pursue pantrying, however, my main objective was to re-connect w/ how I was raised. BTW....luv ur 'pantrying' term!

Hint for you.... Get yourself some organic sugar and organic molasses and make your own brown sugar. You will be BEYOND happy you did. You get 10xs as much for an 1/8th of the price. Plus you can make light or dark just by adjusting the amount of molasses you add. And it doesn't get hard like store bought. One way I help myself save money and always have a stock of it in the pantry.

I too have noticed that it's something that constantly needs "fluffed". Just this week, I reorganized one of my home canned storage areas and my cook books. It feels like a chore before I start but it turns into a pleasure as I realize how busy I've been canning and preserving nutricous foods for my family to enjoy. It's also very satisfying to know that I am 1 cog in a the wheel that is activly reducing the amount of waste I send to the land fill by growing and preserving some of our food on our land. It gives me a sneek peak at Psalms 37:29, which is deeply satisfying. I think it's so satisfying to me is I feel like Proverbs 31:15 when I participate in this kind of household activity, it feels like the role I was designed to do.
