Hahahaha that first one's a killer. Me and a buddy beat the game one time, but man, it literally took us all day. Edit: And to be fair, my buddy beat way more of the game than I did.
I remember seeing that ending bug while playing the game as a child. I was slow to adopt the "y = attack, b = jump" SNES controller conventions so I would use the NES style controls option in this game like NME used in this run. Didn't get used to the default style until Contra 3 and its lack of custom control options forced me too.
Regarding the 'ghouls' in the game: George Romero, godfather of the zombie film genre, said that he never saw his creations as "zombies". Rather he said they were "ghouls", as zombies were a different thing entirely (people put under a spell or curse by a Voodoo witchdoctor). Therefore, the title "Ghouls and Ghosts" is actually fitting.
Amazing run! My mate and I spent three hours the other week getting past the first level!!! Love the Steiner maths and "You Talk Too Much" rapping too!
I only watch speedruns of games I've beat myself cuz I don't want spoilers and prefer to have context on how difficult the tricks are compared to casual runs. I just beat this game (the first loop, haven't gotten to true final boss yet) so I can finally check the speed run out. I beat it on an emulator, using save states at checkpoints because I just can not stand learning how to beat the entire game all in one go (it is very trial and error based). Man it must take a lot of patience to learn the ropes of this game on og hardware. I don't think I even have the energy for a gaming session that long.
You know its funny... with the Switch online "Save State" feature, this game isn't really long at all... even when compared to other SNES games of its era. Even a scrub gamer like me finished it in like 1 hour and 40 mins using the "Save state" feature. Its that brutal, arcade style difficulty that sends you to the beginning of the stage that gives this game its notoriety. I still see it as the original dark souls lol. Great run. Also, learned from the AVGN the mantra that everyone who plays this needs to know - "GET THE KNIFE" (yeah its a dagger, but that chant got stuck in my brain lol)
Look it up. Monks have a list for proficient weapons, not something like "all simple weapons plus x, y, and z) and in the weapons table in chapter 7, Unarmed strikes are in the Simple weapons section.
I'm going to integrate some of these strats into my casual play. The faster I go, the more likely I'm going to be able to beat it casually. -still going to use the bow though becuase I'm a scrub-
Does anyone else think his *Eye* while in Gold armor looks like a sharp Tooth? Like its part of his mouth and he actually has like Brock eyes ontop of his helmet.

I dont wanna brag or anything, but ive beaten the first level once
Thats bad ass. Took me 10 years to beat the first level.
Hahaha

A lot of heavy hitters around here

Completing this game on an original SNES legitimately is one of my greatest achievements.
This game's pretty cheap tho - enemy hitboxes are really weird and the level design is all trial and error.
I found it to be a complete slog and went back replayed the Genesis version instead. It is a decent game but they needlessly padded it out too much
@@Turbotef Na it's a classic

I have very fond memories of playing this game as a kid, getting to the end of the first loop and going “WAIT WHAT”
I was all like, yeah... fuck that, I've completed it as far as I'm concerned.
You got to the end of the game as a kid, thats something
When i beat it as a kid i just let the end scene going for couple of hours :D
The third loop of this game puts Wily 2 from Mega Man & Bass to shame.
I couldn’t even beat level 2.
Aw man, the PJ runs of this game are classic parts of my childhood GDQ memories
Hope the run's improved a lot since 2013-14ish!
This runner was a joy to watch. His personality really showed during this run.

thanks guys for uploading these vids to UA-cam- it's hard for me to catch the Twitch streams. greatly appreciated!
Potentially the best donation of all time. Check Steiner math, it adds up.
what a great run! loved the commentary and explanations of the fights
31:00 I feel like the Dagger magic was made for that boss.
I like NME and the run was great, but I guess for me nothing tops PJs all weapons run lol. All hail the #ScytheCrossbowCombo
thank god someone gave pj a shout out!!!!
What year was that?

It cost a lot of what I once was, but oh well.

Great run! Insane how easy you made that look! Super Ghoul's and Ghosts still give me nightmares lol.
This is officially the best run ever.

I'm comforted a bit that this game is a complete bastard towards even the best players!
3:15 I was hoping the shot from the wizard chest hit the boss and turned it into a baby.
Oh man what a game to speedrun!
The Steiner math thing was a delight to hear

I enjoyed this. Good play guys!
one of my favorite snes games. man my childhood was great.

Scott Steiner math in a SGnG run, LOVE IT! Too sweet!
One second under estimate... nice.

I recently played this game for the first time ever. It is BALLS TO THE WALL HARD!
It's one of the cheapest games out there.
Awesome vid!
These laughs at the endof the run enlighten my night 👌 good work GDQ a good marathon once again ❤
1 second below the estimate! What a champion!
Great run guys!
Great run good commentary and cool to see this evil game beat like this
The event might not be over yet but this is already one of my favorite runs so far next to the Castlevania III run.
Very entertaining run!
Love the runners energy
Didn't expect the Scott Steiner reference there. Well done!
This game is what nightmares are made out of.
Yeah. It's also real fair when the terrain changes shape and these BS unavoidable enemies spawn right in front of you.
No PJ :(
i wanted to see him on the couch at least.
I had fond memories of this game, but could never beat it as a child. My dad wound up beating it twice to get the real ending lol.
I have never beating this game. Its lucky if I could get to level 2. Thanks alot for beating this game :)
Fantastic
Great steam. Chatty guy on the right sounds EXACTLY like Will Arnett and it made it super entertaining.
Shit happens. Well played. I loved watching this beautiful game.
Shoutouts to the man who did the Scott Steiner donation
I started cracking up at the Steiner math donation. Steiner math will always get a laugh out of me.
That was a fantastic run!!! Great job NME!!!
27:10 Here's your interesting D&D fact: Monks are not actually proficient with unarmed strike in 3.5e.
WHAT?!

Wait, theres a game passed the select screen? I didn't even get passed that...
"you wanna cut steak with a plastic spoon? no, get the knife" xD
One second before estimated. Nice.
That was the closest I have ever seen anyone be to estimate. Just four tenths of a second short. Sucks on the bad luck on stage one.
Apparently the first stage is the toughest stage.
I had never heard of this game but definitely looks fun, in a masochistic kind of way
ey isn’t that from the Kirby anime
anyone know how to rapid fire the knife?
it looks to me like they tried to decrease the difficulty from the original ghouls n ghosts but this game is still hard as hecc
How do they do it?!?!?!?
This is really good. What is Japan's standard difficulty?
Normal is the standard difficulty worldwide, though a few of us have done at least one run on professional difficulty.
I didnt know the knife charge chot was soo potent. The range is soo weird i never wanted to use it.
I always wanted to abuse it but never found the right moment/spot to stand. In part because I was a kid and in part because these guys are amazing.

If you try to jump through while the steam is running you get hit anyways.
