correct me if i'm wrong...but i remember from playing as a kid, that although yes the axe sucks and is the worst weapon, and yes the dagger is best just for the rapidness of firing... but the axe would actually continue to fly through enemies all the way to the screens edge, so it could in fact, do more than one hits damage (which you said all weapons do), if you count it tagging more than one enemy as it flies on the diagonal flight path.
