  • Fallout 76 is here, but it’s very different from the traditional ‘Fallout’ experience, so Andrew Rivera explores what made us fall in love with the franchise in the first place.

From our first glimpse of the Fallout 76 trailer to subsequent revelations of Fallout 76 gameplay from the Fallout 76 BETA, it’s clear that the Fallout series has gone in a drastically different direction from its RPG origins. While we’ll have to wait to see if it’s indeed the worst Fallout among the Fallout ranked, it’s clear that best Fallout video games, whether they’re from Bethesda, Obsidian, Interplay, or others, adhere to the post apocalyptic sci-tropes and RPG elements that make these video game a cut above the rest of the atomic pile.
The classics Fallout 1 and Fallout 2 established the nuclear lore, and over the series evolution, they still stand as highlights in any Fallout retrospective. But as this video essay explained, the Fallout franchise may have lost its way in recent years, and our opinion is that the modern games have undergone many a rightful critique for its de-evolution. Fallout 3, Fallout New Vegas, and Fallout 4 are a new era of Fallout under Bethesda, but any analysis will show that the series has become simplified. Fallout used to mean more than just Vault Boy and Pip Boy, it was a sobering take on the horrors of nuclear war, but now that’s become a marketing gimmick. Will Fallout find its way again? Maybe, but in the meantime, we can ask ourselves: What made Fallout Great?

Jackson Flynn Veitch 4 was also really fun. I never played New Vegas, only 3 and 4. But from what I’ve heard New Vegas is Fallout at its peak. I might try it someday.

I didn't find the voice protagonist that bad sure less options but they could've just had him read more lines. What I did hate was I couldn't side with the bandits and fight the minutemen. And I had to go and find a baby I knew for less than a year instead of making a new baby with Piper or Kate which would've probably been more fun.

That's why I'm so excited for "The Outer Worlds" as it's Fallout but in space and since it's made by the same team that made "Fallout New Vegas". Which is one of my favorite games of all time.

What about the Radio? Radio is basically an essential for 3D Fallout games. Can't imagine them without it.

T3am.T.3.M I partially agree with you. So far, none of the main series games have been “bad”, but some are definitely a higher quality (in my opinion) than others. Andrew has a really good point about choices specifically. In Fallout 1, 2 and NV, there is a lot of room for decision making, while 3 and 4 have mostly binary options. While 3 and 4 were in no means bad, they certainly aren’t to the same standards as the other three. The best way to describe 3 and 4 is that they are good action games, but they aren’t good fallout games.

Howdy from Vault 39! Also, fun fact: The duck-and-cover method has no defensive benefits what so ever. It's true purpose is to provide an easy way to count the bodies.

Idk to me it’s all different takes on the same idea. I do hope they cycle back to a game more similar to New Vegas next

I got 4 seconds in, and didn't know if I could even finish an opinion video on Fallout when the video is showing a Fallout 3 trailer but the copyright tag says Fallout 4 (2015). GG almost got me there.

I understand, but I can’t say that I fully agree.
2:33, that’s true, but you might be looking a bit too much into it as those can be found in other fallout games as well. Plus, to be fair, realism isn’t all that fallout is. If you want an example of nitpicking too much, go to NoMutantsAllowed.
Realism and world building are very important, and I do wish it were more consistent. However, there’s a point where some can nitpick too much and/or forget about everything else in the game.
Yes it’s not realistic for some areas of the wasteland to be as under developed as they are given the time passes (along with other things), but it’s not fair to point fingers where other fallout games do it too. I can also suspend my disbelief with or without its in game explanations to enjoy the game more.
Plus there’s also brotherhood of steel and tactics.
I still think that fallout 3 has the best depiction of a “wasteland” out of all of the fallout games.
It’s wasteland is one of if not the most depressing in the series and it does all of that without saying a word.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with some games focusing on the war/post apocalypse itself and others on the rebuilding.
Fallout 3 is not as deep as a puddle. It (your choices) do(es) affect your character, but it does affect the wasteland as well.
War never changes, but fallout has. That may or may not be a bad thing, but to me, many fallout fans are too harsh on the newer titles.
At the very least can’t you view them as different eras (or that fallout is more than what it was in 1997)?
Fallout 76 has npcs, just no humans, plus it’s a side game. It also has anti griefs game mechanics. Nukes in 76 are used for high level areas, not just pvp.
