We’re extremely intrigued by the recent rumors that a new Duke Nukem movie is on the horizon, starring John Cena. Duke Nukem wouldn’t be the first first person shooter icon to make it to the big screen in the body of a WWE Superstar, though. That honor goes to Dwayne The Rock Johnson, start of the 2005 Doom movie. Dwayne Johnson is no stranger to video game movies these days, with a starring turn in Jumanji and the upcoming Rampage movie, but Dwayne Johnson early in his career made some questionable choices when it came to the movies he starred in. And, as far as videogame movies go, it doesn’t get much worse than Doom 2005. The Doom movie is as far away from the legendary 1993 Doom video game as it could be, and the result is a sad, generic film that doesn’t feel anything like the legendary Doom game from Id Software.
Dwayne Johnson, the Rock, seemed like a perfect candidate for the Doomguy, but the movie inexplicably turns him heel and casts Karl Urban as the iconic Doom Guy. Not only that, but instead of basic the visuals and themes on the iconic original Doom game, the Doom video game movie is based on Doom 3, also from 2005. Doom 3 was a darker, slower, story-focused reboot of Doom, which the style at the time but displeased long-term fans of the original Doom. The legendary demons, straight out of a horror movie, and the ultra violence was still there, but the demons were no longer from Hell, and that ones that were barely resembled the legendary Cyberdemon and scary Hell Knight from the original Doom game. The Doom 2016 reboot shows that you can make an awesome Doom game in modern times without sacrificing the intensity and simplicity that made it such a hit in the first place. All the ingredients were there for an awesome Doom movie, and an awesome the Rock movie, but the wrestler wasn’t ready for Hollywood prime time yet. Here’s hoping John Cena will be able to overcome the videogame movie stigma and play an awesome Duke Nukem.
