As a Native American, I was so happy as a kid when I found out Turok was native like me. I also remember hearing that Chris redfield of resident evil was originally gonna be half native but was full white instead. I’m glad there’s more representation of more races and it pleases me to see people like the quartering getting triggered by the fact there’s humans on earth besides white dudes.
Lee Everett is my favorite video game character period. I'm also white but Lee is just a relatable human being. Doing something you regret and trying to right your wrongs. Even if he was justified in killing the guy slept with his wife.
I dont know if he falls under the angry black man stereotype, and if that invalidates anything in my statement, but Lincoln Clay in Mafia 3, at least to me, is an interesting character. I found the way he responds to his situation, given the circumstances of the time and place the game takes place in, compelling.

My proudest moment as black gamer was in Diablo II when my Paladin Character was black, and you could change it. I was like “Wow, they place a black character as a noble warrior, not witch doctor *cough* Diablo 3 *cough*” But what I REALLY loved was when in Diablo 3 they made The Archangel Tyrael’s mortal form black.

My favorite is Marcus Holloway. Book smart, street smart, didn't speak in Ebonics, was intelligent, and had a one of the best personalities in videogames. I still play Watch Dogs 2 to this day.
Oh my God! I remember Edgar Quartet! That was the first Black action character I played on the Sega Master System at my friend's house when I was a child! I was so excited to play as him because of how innovative it was back then in 1986 and it was my first time seeing a character that looked just like me.

I used to play as Daisy in Smash back when it was on the GameCube because I thought her darker tone meant she was black. I still choose Daisy now bc I made her my main back then based on that one skin.
Soulcaliber always amazed and disappointed me at the same time. Zasalamel was the only black character to EVER exist in the soulcaliber storyline. So despite his character being prominently featured on the box art for soul caliber and a new character creation with hundreds of color variations You could not create brown skinned characters in the character creation! Zasalamel Character being pure evil! The lack of being able to create any variation of brown skinned playable created characters! It’s almost laughable Namco’s treatment of black and / or brown characters... almost!

look at for honor. the writer of for honor is a chinese woman. they make new characters every like few months to a year, characters that are "warriors" of the past. not one african warrior character yet an there are so many african warriors in the past.
My favourite black video game charectors was me. Charector design is important and doable in every game now and I don't feel there is any excuse not to have it as a default. If you don't want to use it the option to skip is there too.

Streets of Rage 4's best character is a black girl with an electric guitar, but it's still disappointing when I play online and most people are still only picking the white guy when the majority of the cast isn't.
Thank you for this vid! I always loved Lt. Duran from Starcraft BW. He was the second black character I had ever seen in a video game. The first was Barrett. My white friends didn't understand why I didn't like Barrett and at the time I'm not sure I understood either ("But he's a good dad lol", they would say). Something about him being the typical big, dumb, emotionally immature black guy vs awesome Cloud who gets all the girls. But Duran wasn't like that. He was portrayed as intelligent, confident, capable, and he had his own plans going on. Although it turns out that he is a villain, the SC narrative is morally grey, and for me at that time, it was just enough to see someone who was black and cool enough to want to be like. It's not about making black characters always good, it's about making them dynamic and present. And that goes for all people.
The pokemon series has done a much better job being more inclusive for ALL people. I think we have to be careful about specifically talking about certain representation in videogames rather than just more in general. I mean, take another demographic in videogames, women. They are very much in the same boat as POC when it comes to representation and how they are portrayed. Anyway, this was a good video.

I agree Marcus is the coolest black characters along with Lee and Clementine but Japanese always portrayed black men as ugly and loud.
It was the English dub that made Barret from FFVII more stereotypical.... He was more like Solid Snake in the original Japanese

The pokemon series has done a much better job being more inclusive for ALL people.
I think we have to be careful about specifically talking about certain representation in videogames rather than just more in general.
I mean, take another demographic in videogames, women. They are very much in the same boat as POC when it comes to representation and how they are portrayed.
