I literally stopped fearing public speaking the second you said stop being selfish, I understood everything and in my mind I immediately knew I wouldn’t fear public speaking as long as I keep thinking about the audience and how I can help them

Vinh summarized what took me 25 years to figure out. And he inspired me to public speaking to another level!

Thank you Vinh for this..... I always get nervous of getting on stage for anything so I usually avoided it.... But now I've got more courage than before to do public speaking!

How wonder how I sound, record myself, listen to how I sound, cringey.

This is so true. We are so much concerned about ourself that we forget we are there to add value to others. Serve, just serve.

I learned a long time ago I was in a professional association for administrative assistance and served as president of a local chapter for four years and then moved on to the state level for two years. The thing I took from that was it’s not scary to run a meeting because all you’re doing is presenting an agenda and other people are doing the talking. So that was easy. But when you get up in front of everyone at least in that type of venue. There were probably 150 people in the room, but knowing that they want you to do well made a huge difference in my self-esteem.

This advice is gold! What also helped me is knowing that everyone in the audience wants you to succeed, they are not sitting there hoping you stuff up, they are all barracking for you.

This is so beyond true. Never thought about it as me being a vehicle for the audience but that is exactly what it is like, just like a comedian.

Or, alternatively, you can potentially focus on your purpose if it’s easier to think about that instead. A mindset of “man on a mission” - it at least helps in cases where you are afraid of others judging you, which can also contribute to fear of public speech. I noticed it helps me to not care about others’ opinions and judgement (or convictions as a byproduct of judgements) by shifting my focus on the here and now and, most importantly, on the importance of what I am doing. What I am doing is too important to let others influence it in a negative way, so why should I even allow others to control it if it brings me more harm than good? I don’t know these people, so whose to say that what they think is relevant? Questions like that.

This is some solid advice. Reminds me of Jay Shettys advice on service. And how serving others brings meaning and purpose to our lives and removes the focus on self.

Well put! Communication is about (and should be more of) sharing value! When you give value by sharing, fear is replaced by caring 😌
