Rustic American Flag/ FAQ Why Can't I Find The Colors?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 28 тра 2017
- After many emails and messages about the colors of stain that I use, I decided to call Minwax and find out why people could not find the colors that I have been using. After speaking to the representative at Minwax, I had the answer, it turns out that the True Blue and Scarlet colors that are offered by Lowe's are colors that are made specifically for Lowe's. The other locations that you can purchase the water-based Minwax stains do not offer the True Blue or Scarlet colors but they do offer other similar colors.

Jeff, just want to thank you for the time and effort you put into these videos.
Mark Veilleux thank you so much, I really appreciate that. I really enjoy it and hope to have more coming soon. Thank you for watching
I have made several flags from pallets and they have been pretty decent. I have always painted my outdoor flags with enamel paint but that sure takes a while to cure out. I have watched several of your vids and today, I took your advice and went to Lowes to try some water based stain. They had the exact colors just like you mentioned in this vid. Now to give them a try.. thanks for the tips and advice..
Thanks, good thing I got both stores near by!
Thank you for the info. I have been trying to find those colors for a week.
Thanks for the video only have a Home Depot near me and was about to buy some stain.
Jeff,
thanks for the videos on how to make the flags. Thanks to you I've been able to make a couple for a charity auction. I think they will generate some donations. Thanks again.
Dave
D Hep you're very welcome! Thank you for that and thank you for watching.
I use the Navy blue. If you wipe it off fairly quickly it torches great. The problem I'm having now is our Home Depot has discontinued Minwax products and switched to Varathane. As of now, they no longer offer custom mixed stains.
I ran into the same problem. Home depot only has worn navy with verathane. They can mix up 3 blue colors for you with a can of clear tint base. I tried navy first, seemed too purplish. They have carribean, and poolside as the other 2. Poolside seemed to be the best. Give it a try man.
I've been going crazy trying to find red white and blue that I can use in stain I'm a home Depot fan but I guess I'm going to have to go over to Lowe's thanks for the info.
Jeff, Thank you for your flag videos that you've posted over the years, they've certainly been a big help. I took your advice and have been using the Minwax water based wood stain in Scarlet, Deep Ocean and Marshmallow. I was at Lowes today and found that Minwax has discontinued the wood stain and replaced it with a water based wood finish stain. While there are over 200 colors to this new line there is not a color that comes close to Scarlet. You may not be aware of the change but thought I might check with you to see if you know of an alternative product that I can use moving forward.
Chris, It looks like the stain is a clear, tintable base. If it's like any other tintable color, it should come with a tint formula stuck to the can. Assuming the base formula hasn't dramatically changed, they should be able to manually tint it using the formula from an old can.
Jeff sent me pictures of the tint formula for his "True Blue" and "Scarlet." I had them mixed at Lowes today and they look great. True Blue (101-0.5, 102-1Y29, 115-1Y19) and Scarlet (101-3, 109-3, 217-1Y6). You'll need the water-based clear base. Each of these tint formulas is for a quart.
@@kevinsydow5479 did you use the solid base or semi transparent base?
Hello, love your videos. If I may ask, what brand and specific color do you use for the THIN GOLD LINE? I am a former LEO and dispatcher and my wife is still on the job as a dispatcher with 14 yrs on the job and I am having a hard time picking the right color. TYVM for your time.
Confirmed this weekend - Home Depot does not carry those colors - Lowes does!
The official colors are Old Glory Red and Old Glory Blue. I wonder if those can be mixed at Home Depot or Lowe’s.
Just left lowes and they said they no longer carry the clear tintable stain by minwax at all. They said Minwax is changing it so they got rid of it. They will have something similar when minwax releases it but the names will be different. They even got rid of the color brochure ;(
Hello,
I recently purchased a 100 yr old gray, weathered, rough cut, oak barn door complete with rusty hinges and latch. It measures about 7 ft x 4 ft. I'd like to paint or stain an American flag on it and hang it outside on the side of my barn. I'd prefer to keep the beautiful gray weathered wood for the white stripes. Being outside, would you suggest I use paint or stain? I'd prefer a water based transparent red and blue stain to allow the wood grain to show through but am concerned with it holding up outside. Have you ever done an outside flag on weathered barn wood and do you have any tips on the best paint / colors to use? I'd like to gently torch it at the end. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Wayne
Do you have a video of you doing a Subdued Flag in black? Also what color of black do you use?
I used Navy blue, Barn Red, and white. All transparent stains and they came out really nice.
Lowe’s or Home Depot?
@@JB-jg5om Lowe’s
Jeff, have you done any NC state flags or Tarheel flags?
Ty friend
Can you tell me what the color is that you use for the thin blue line? Paint or stain?
Both blues work, I have used both.
My customers like the navy and crimson. The navy needs to be wiped off fairly quick. The crimson i let sit a few longer
Went to my local Lowes and they said they don't carry the true blue anymore. What would you suggest? Would you have the numbers for the true blue? What they mixed looked like a lilac
The closest Lowe's to me is 1 hour away and i was looking on amazon and i can not find the blue that you have but they do have indigo. what do you think of the color indigo? Thanks
I can only get crimson at Lowe's. They don't have Scarlett
Jeff, trying to order stencils but website is asking to sign into my account. I dont see where to sign up for an account. Help!
i got the navy blue and i think it is perfect
kevin ward agreed
kevin ward with the sample they had there at the store, the Navy looked too dark. Once opening the Deep Ocean I think I would agree as well.
so Home Depot no longer has Miniwax and Lowes no longer makes Scarlet Red and True Blue
What color did you do the Gold stripe on your Dispatcher flags? Also I don't have a crown stapler, do you think a brad nail gun will work just as good?
Ed Pereira I used a spray paint for the gold line, it was the color marigold in Rust Oleum. I think brad nails will work to hold the strips together in conjunction with glue, I use 1" staples but once the glue dries it's solid.
Have you done any of the green flags for the army and if so what do you use for the green. Thanks.
I'd also love to know this! Thanks again for great content & detailed instructions!
Looks great. I got these colors. I torched the stripes before staining. I think I torched too heavy. The white(marshmellow) turned out very gray. How can I fix it?
I also torch before stain and with the white, I wipe it off pretty quick. In fact, I just using pickling white for just a hint of white.
Are the Minwax True Blue and Scarlet water base stains the shelf colors or does Lowes add the tint for you? Our Lowes, here in Massachusetts doesn't carry either color.
Lowes will add the tint to the clear base, but I went to Lowes last night to grab more cans and they told me that they discontinued the colors in efforts to provide more shades of Reds, Blues, Greens, etc. Now its time to go back to the drawing board and look around for something similar.
I cant get scarlet red anymore from lowes can u give me the mix ratio ?just send me a pik of bar code please
Lowes does not carry scarlet anymore
Are they solid color stains or semi transparent?
True U.S.A. flag code colors are:
OLD GLORY BLUE-
Pantone 282C
RGB: 0,33,71
CMYK:100,87,37,51
OLD GLORY RED-
Pantone: 193C
RGB: 187,19, 62
CMYK: 8,100,77,1
WHITE
RGB: 255, 255, 255
CMYK: 0,0,0,0
let people be creative. if they want to make the flag in other colors let them.
not all people are close-minded like you
JulietBravo628 do those "true flag" colors come in a stain or paint only?
Which of the two reds that you had is the closest to the actual red in the flag? I'm debating if it's worth the trip to lowes or should I get the one from home depot.
The Scarlet was the one that I felt was the closest and looked best.
@@TheFurrminator yeah I picked some up last week and finished my two flags. Came out great. Thanks for the great videos. They were a real help.
I went to Lowe’s recently and they no longer carry the true blue or the scarlet. I even checked the Minwax website, and they don’t show those colors.
I also discovered this and the new colors are totally off. Has anyone found a new option. The new blue is not bad but the shelf color of red is not good. Like semi transparent stains which allow more wood grain to show. Don't want to change to paint.
Jim Beauchamp I’ve been using semi transparent. The colors I’ve been using are navy, which is a little dark but still works well, and crimson which works perfectly.
I just went to my Lowe's and was able to get it. But, you have to ask for it by name and have them override the error that will come up when they scan the quart/gallon you want to use.
@@brentonholbrook6928
Good morning,
Can you please share a photo of the label for both stains.
Recently went to my local Lowe’s and they stated that the color doesn’t appear in their system.
Respectfully
@@abelardosalazar1829 I can't share a picture in the comments, so the red stain is called Scarlet. The numbers for the coloring is 101-3, 109-3, 217-1Y6. The blue stain is called True Blue. Its coloring numbers are 101-0.5, 102-1Y29, 115-1Y19.
Do you stain first, then torch or torch the wood first then stain?
Robert Burkart I stain first, after the stain dries then I torch to the desired look.
does anyone know if these colors are still around in 2020. i dont even see deep ocean on the chart now
They discontinued these specific colors but there are new colors that are similar. I chose Denim for the blue in the new stains but I haven’t had the need to get a new red yet.
Jeff , are you aware they they have changed the formula of these? Its now 5 times thicker . I've used these stains since watching this video, and now i don't know what to do
daver424 I have seen that the stain has changed, I recently made a flag using the new stain for the union. I went with the denim blue in the solid color, it looked great and I Gabe no complaints. I just applied it a little lighter to see the grain. I haven’t switched the red stain yet but I hear the crimson is the closest to the scarlet.
@@TheFurrminator You brush it on , unfortunately i spray mine so ill have to thin it down and try it.
daver424 yea, that could pose a problem because it is very thick. Good luck with it, I hope it works well for you. Just curious, what does the number 424 mean in your channel name?
@@TheFurrminator It was just a random number i used no meaning behind it .
I used it today. Lowe’s no longer carries the scarlet or true blue. Make sure you solid not semi transparent. The blue doesn’t show up on the wood in the transparent.
Lowes doesn't admit to having true blue in their online store, at least.
Lowe’s discontinued crimson & true blue. Minwax reformulated their clear tint base as well🙄
is this stain transparent or solid?
semi transparent or solid?
How much is the stain
10 bucks a quart
If you like woodworking, just look for woodprix plans.
I did it with the Stodoys plans.
I would not tolerate an Amway ad on my video. Zero credibility.
He has no control over which ads UA-cam puts in his videos.
@@catfish307 They put Scamway ads on these flag videos because they know there is a trumper audience here who will fall for anything!
