    With the help of Arbortech's Turbo Plane (goo.gl/UQeSXK), I make a wooden American flag but do so in a fashion that makes it appear that it's waving in the wind. It really turns out amazing! Let me know what you think in the comments below and be sure to check out Arbortech's woodworking tools!
    NOTE: I've had multiple comments requesting to know the length and thickness to make each of the stripes. Please refer to the following instructions:
    Start off by cutting the stripes to 2' 7.5" each. This is 1/4" longer than their final length will be but will allow for some slop during the gluing stage. This also allows you to easily get 3 stripes for every 8' 2x4 that you cut. When cutting up 5 2x4s you'll end up with a total of 15 stripes so you'll have 2 extras in case one of the others has some imperfections you don't like.
    The next step is to get each of the stripes to their final thickness of 1 1/4". I did this using my planer, but you could just as easily accomplish this on the table saw. If you can't raise the blade high enough to do it in one pass, just raise it slightly over half the height of the board and make two passes, turning it over end for end between cuts.
    =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
    Special Thanks to Doug Neiner from "DN Handcrafted" for designing the title sequence. He did the whole thing while saluting the flag! Go check out his awesome channel @ / dnhandcrafted

    Thanks for all the positive feedback! I greatly appreciate it! This was a fun build and I'm sure that I'll be making more of these flags to give away as gifts in the future. I've already had quite a few folks e-mailing me or DMing me on Instagram asking for the plans. I've gone ahead and put the links to the SketchUp file I created in the video description. If you don't have SketchUp, you'll find links to a PDF or 2D printable pictures of the template with all the necessary dimensions for you to recreate what I've done. So check the video description for the links! Have fun and thanks again!

    I have now made 4 of these flags. I've sold 2 and donated 2 to local veteran organizations for auctions. They were quite the hit !! On the last one I made I cheated a bit. Instead of carving or painting the stars, I used outdoor vinyl. I drew them in a cad program for the vinyl cutter and cut out enough stars for 7 more flags !! It was very nice and very quick to just peel and press the stars into place. Once the poly is applied they stay in place.

    Great job Drew. Something i did to help rotate the flag was to build a lazy susan base out of some scrap plywood bout 16" x 16" and a lazy susan about 12" x 12". Works very well for a number of projects I've done. Good luck and great woodworking sir.

    Drew I bought the plans for the flag because I had not seen the waving flag before only flat ones. I made one for my son inlaw as a Christmas gift. Since giving it to him I have orders for 5 more which of corse I am selling. I haven't had the chance to finish mine yet. I plan on using a mahogany or another red wood for a unburned version painting the union blue and filling the cut out stars white. Again thank you for the video and plans as these are fun to make.

  • @dennisfahlstrom7422
    @dennisfahlstrom7422 5 років тому +1

    Most excellent!! I made a wood flag for my den years ago and used pieces of #1 clear white pine and red cedar for the stripes and the white pine for the union got painted royal blue using oil based paint after 2 coats of white primer. I bought the 50 wooden pre cut stars on line, painted them white, again using oil based primer and paint and glued them in place on the union. I did buy the appropriate size stars to save a lot of effort and made the stripes match the size I needed. Everything was glued to a piece of 3/8” plywood.
    Some wipe on water based poly (6 coats) and French cleats for the back for hanging finished the project. I like your idea of making it appear waving so I’ll go through it all over and give it to my nephew who is retired army. I’m retired navy (25 years) so his service means a lot to me.

    Well done Drew! I like your solution for saving material and getting a second one as a result. It would have taken far less brain power (something important to me!) to just glue up a full butcher block, then carve down to make the ripples.

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  6 років тому +3

      Originally that was my plan. But once I started thinking about it, I feared that I wouldn't be consistent and in the end it would look like a wrinkly mess instead of having nice pretty waves. So I started playing around with it in Sketchup and that's when it occurred to me that I could get 2 flags out of one. :) Thanks, Mark!

    🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸It turned out very well! I’ve always wanted to make a ‘waving’ flag out of wood, so I really appreciate the tutorial. I think the only thing I’ll do differently is paint the field dark blue, instead of black. And I might skip the wood burning on one and go with all paint, since I have two chances to get things right. On the other hand, perhaps I’ll make a cutting board for my mother-in-law!

    • @FishersShop

      Since I knew I'd be burning the "red" stripes, I didn't want to introduce color to the union. But if I wanted to paint the stripes, then I wouldn't have had to use the foil tape and probably would have saved some time. I sure do like the burned look though. Thanks for watching.

    Perhaps once you have the boards cut individually you can then sand them then stain/burn each one prior to glue up. This way you avoid having to tape off.

    • @FishersShop
      @FishersShop  5 років тому

      I tried that in a previous attempt but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get them to line up perfectly during the glue-up. Doing it the way I did assures for a perfectly smooth surface. It's long and tedious, but it's worth it in my opinion.

    Great job Drew. I'm about to purchase the wood for my own (non-waving) burn wood flag later this week and ran across this while watching a few builds on UA-cam. Maybe some day I'll tackle a waving one like this. That first out take is priceless. Blew your son's mind right outta his head.

    I love the flag, well done. For the dust issue with the Dremel carving, consider getting the 490 dust blower attachment. It goes onto the end of your Dremel with the carving bit and acts a mini fan blowing away dust. I have got one and it really helps clean up the area you are working in. The 490 attachment is fairly cheap, a few bucks but worth the investment at your local home improvement center.
    I may attempt your waving flag in the future! Thanks for the video.

    Most Excellent Design! A tip for the Star Carving. Rather than carve one side of a point, then turn, then another side, then turn, then another side, then turn on and on. Just carve one side of one point in A star then move down to the next one, the move down to the next one. Notice whats missing, turning 10 times per star as that is how many sides there are. Ive done it this way and its way faster. Do them in rows. I fined is easier in diagonal rows because you use your elbow as a pivot point and your arm swings down and over naturally to the next start. Rotate the flag and do the next sides of a point for all stars. When they are all done go back and do the middle of each star, its obviously much easier now that the edges are done. Hope this helps.

    That build looks amazing! I love haw the warm toned burn marks and the cool black spray paint make it look like red and blue with a dramatic filter on, haha. It’s really cool!
