Very nice comparison. Simple and effective. I love how you kept raw wood instead of doing all torched.
Good comparisons between the products with different techniques. Thanks for the information Chris.
Great video Chris...this is what has need to be shown vs. people just gripping about the change. 👍
The be real
Great video. Are you using transparent or solid color stains? Thanks
Great video Chris. I’ve been using the old Minwax for about a year and was very happy with it on my flags. My local HD didn’t have the tinted stain when I started so I got the Minwax from Lowes. I stocked up when I saw them changing, but had to buy some more a couple of weeks ago. I’ve done 30+ flags with the new Minwax, and while the results seem good, I’m just not a fan of how thick it is. I really liked the thinner stuff. So I’m gonna try the Varathane. Thanks for the education, really appreciated.
I’m still really liking the Varathane. I’ve stopped using the minwax even though I have a bunch left over. Maybe the minwax can be watered down. I’ll have to experiment.
@@ChrisPowellFSD Yes, surely you can thin the Minwax for an easier application.
Great comparison! Thank you!
yes they have semi-transparent and solid. I prefer the deeper color of the solid so I'm going to be trying that. We'll see how it goes. I've heard the thickness makes the Minwax harder to use. I'll have to try it out. If really bad, I may try Varathane or Mohawk.
I gotta say I like the vibrant colors of the new minwax. You should st them out in the sun for a few weeks and see how they hold up under torture.
Were you using the new solid color or the semi-transparent Minwax?
Nice comparison man great video same here o have always used minwax but I might just give varathane a try
I was surprised with how much more I like it.
My local Ace Hardware carries a couple cans of the old formula of the Minwax - but they have switched out the tinting machine because they have gone from Sherwin Williams to Benjamin Moore, and they employees don't know how to use the new tints in the Minwax... Argh.
That’s frustrating. Usually, I just tend to stick with what I know works, but I’m happy I did this comparison and like the Varathane. Maybe you can find that somewhere. I got it at HD.
Did you mention the varathane colors?
I'm most likely switching, i hate how thick the new minwax is. Thanks for the video.
I have a few cans that should last me a little while, but I think I’ll be making the switch also. I might see about thinning the minwax to get it closer to the consistency of the varathane.
I’m not a fan of how thick the new Minwax is, and will probably try the Varathane for that very reason.
You need a face light to show the stain colors.
yeah i love the old minwax my lowes has a bunch
I got some just before they made the change.
Hello.
I'm from Germany and I can buy Minwax here but not in a biased red color, do you know a solution?
Thx.
Just FYI--you can still get Scarlet and True Blue, you just need to know how to walk them through tricking the system. I just did a video on how to do it, in case you still want to get those colors. I'll link it below.

Great video btw. My issue now is finding a nice bright white stain that will show the grain like the red and blue do without going either grayish even with a light torching or takes 10 coats to look decent even on non torched pine. Have you tried any white stains with any success?
Thank you.
I did try the Minwax white a while back, but didn’t like the results. What about torching first and then using a watered down art paint? You could stain the rest of the flag, torch, then do the white. You would be able to experiment with how much water to add.
@@ChrisPowellFSD - Might just try that, never thought that way. I just bought Varathane semi transparent water based stain and had it tinted white yesterday and it is taking massive coats like I was saying. Heading to Sherwin Williams this morning with some test pieces so they can mix me up some stain and I can put it on until I find the right mix. Take care and TY.
Thank you. Let me know what you come up with.
For those that do not like the new shades of blue and red, my Lowe’s still has the old colors loaded so make sure to ask.
Good info! Thanks
Agreed, I got them the make the new Minwax in Scarlett and True Blue. Just not a fan of how thick it is, but my results have been good.
I've tried at two lowes they are confuse when I ask, is there something that I can tell them to help them find true blue and scarlet?
@@djwreck2176 true blue and scarlet is still on their system but their system requires the old clear tint base , which was discontinued a year ago , i was just there today , they were able to pull it up but they cant make it without the old clear tint base , which well good luck finding it anywhere. some reason their system wont let them use the newer clear tint base.
@@zoeymara - Sherwin Williams shows right now on their web site that they have the clear tint base. Unless they have never updated their page. Product #618074444 / Sales #905-4404.
Hey Chris, is that pine you're using? If you already mentioned it, I missed it. Always good to know the material species since they can stain differently. Thanks!
Yes it’s pine.
Bizarre that I can’t find Varathane Navy Blue or Scarlet online, even on Varathane’s website.
I didn’t have any luck either. I actually ended up grabbing a flyer when I was at HD. The funny thing is they didn’t even have them out. They were behind a few cans of stain, still sealed up in the plastic wrapper they shipped in.
question , i recently just got into making DIY Us flags and other things and ive already ran into a problem , i learned from my brother who has a small stock pile of the old Minwax colors mainly Scarlet and True Blue , but those colors arent available any more Lowes can still make them if you have the old minax clear tint base but that was discontinued a year ago and their system wont let them use the new clear tint base to do it , with that said what colors are people using since you cant get scarlet nor true blue any more?
The only other colors are the ones I put in the videos. I took pictures of the part numbers. I forget the names off the top of my head.
@@ChrisPowellFSD so crimson and indigo? those are the two i bought to day of the new minwax to try
@@ChrisPowellFSD i found out with the new clear tint base they can still make the scarlet and true blue but it wont be solid they can only make the translucent version of it , i like the solids more , so im giving crimson and indigo a try
I always go with the clear. Even that’s super thick. It ends up being too much like paint. That’s why I switched over to the Varathane.
@@ChrisPowellFSD what colors in Varathane? ill give both a try and see which i like better. i havent used the new minwax yet but i bought them , last ones i used was the old scarlet and true blue.
Do you use solid color stain or semi transparent with the Minwax?
I always use the semi transparent. The solid stuff just feels like paint.
New mini wax looks get imo
Is the pre-stain conditioner necessary?
I never use it.
I have found that it depends on the material. For example I don’t need to use it on pieces that aren’t so wide, but on an pieces that are wider that 6 inches I do because I have more blotchiness on wider surfaces if it makes any sense.
Ramon Reyes I’ll have to give it a try sometime. Do you just get the same brand conditioner as the stain?
Chris Powell yes I do. Also make sure it’s same water/oil based pre-stain to match your stain.
Thanks for the info. I’ll give it a try.
Do all of you realize that the Minwax comes in 2 types?? They have a clear type and a semi transparent/solid formula?? Both are mixable in up to 200 different colors.
I mean I can’t speak for literally everyone, but I am aware of that...
So how does this work? Sorry I’m new. Would I take the base and then just ask for the color I want by the number they have on the samples by the bases?
MOHAWK
I haven’t heard of them before. Looks pretty interesting. I might have to check it out. Got any pics of what it looks like?
