He was an Army veteran and always thanked other vets by randomly paying for their groceries or gasoline. My husband died in 2015 and I have been following his appreciation to others by doing the same. No matter where I am or what I am doing, if I see someone wearing a veteran hat, shirt, vest, anything; I walk up to them and thank them, pay for meals or groceries. I have heard so many wonderful stories from random people when doing this. I have been trying to learn how to make an American flag with a pallet but have not been very successful. I think that I can actually follow your video and make your flag. I need more flags portrayed around my home and this one will be perfect. Thank you for all you do to teach others. Keep doing what you are doing.
I made two flags thanks to this video. Here’s my feedback. Great call using a 1x10x10. This allowed for the perfect amount of wood leaving 4 extra strips which I picked out any with knots. I took the time and used wood glue bind the individual pieces which worked great but expect to do some sanding and re staining where the glue squeezed out. I also found that using a sharp razor blade to score the stars before carving with my Dremel left very clean lines and sharp tips. Even tho this adds another step I highly recommend doing this. Project is a backdrop for a helmet and jacket holder for the Harley. One is for me and one is a gift. Love it.

This is an amazing tutorial and after making a flag and posting it online I have gotten orders for 24 flags in my first week! After making several I can give the following recommendations: First, it's actually more cost effective where I live (NJ) to buy 1x2x8 boards and cut them to length. The 1x2x8 actually end up being cheaper (8 * $3.21 = $25.68) than 1x10x10 ($26.10) and you save a ton of time by not cutting and ripping boards, not to mention the cleanup. I would even consider getting the 1x2 if they were slightly higher cost, because time is money. I bought (8) 1x10x10 boards a week ago and to setup, cut, sand all the boards and clean everything up took me 3.5 hours. I can cut that time drastically by just having to cut to length and sand. I do not have a stand with a stop setup for my saw but I will be buying one soon. Second, for burning the stars I turn my propane torch all the way down and "kiss" each star. That gives it a nice burn and doesn't bother the wood around it much. As for burning any custom work e.g. name and badge number for "thin X line", I use a wood burning tool I bought a few years ago that works wonders. It fits right in the lines of my cut and will give a nice even burn. I just couldn't justify $40 for a small torch at this point. I agree having the flex shaft is a great investment. It helps with precision and saves cramping in your hand. I bought one off Amazon because I could not find a Dremel brand in stock or online and the blower does not fit on the end, which is unfortunate, but I am dealing with it for now. Thank you for the awesome video!
@@JohnBuildsIt I wish it was that cheap here. I might try a lumber yard, but I'm not sure how much cheaper I can get it. If it was that cheap I would certainly buy them and cut them. Just finished my first one. This video is awesome and made the project easy enough for a novice like myself. The only hitch I ran into was not having all my boards flush in the union field. Two were raised slightly higher than the others. I didn’t realize that this would be an issue and went ahead with gluing and brad nails. When using the plunge router attachment on my Dremel this unevenness would change the depth of the bit. Other than that it went smoothly. Thanks so much for this!
This is by far the very best video for making these. Very detailed and I had zero issues making one. Thank you for sharing your experiences in making these. I plan to make a few more and give them away to veterans.
Thank you for posting this video. I can definitely see a difference in professionalism of yours vs. one of my local builders. Yours is of a higher quality and your satin finish is definitely smoother and of better quality than many that I've seen.
I built flags like this from pallets. 20"x40" sold them for $20. They were a hot item. Then everybody started making them and sales dropped. It was fun making them and adding sayings, or different colors, etc. Make sure to glue between the boards.
I bought a load of clear pine lumber from a lumber yard that was distressed because of water damage. From that , I made 147 Adirondack Chairs on my new Shop Smith. This was a labor of love, I ruined a good thing. I lost interest in wood working, it became a job with little rewards. It was not a money maker, by any stretch of the imagination. If you don't love what you are doing, it's not fun any more. Keep you hobbies a hobby.
I just finished making two American Flags following your instructions and they turned out great. I made one for my next door neighbor with a Blue line incorporated in the Flag. Thanks for such a great instructional video.
How in the hell does anyone not like this video? Outstanding video! I've been considering making one of these, but it was a little overwhelming. This is the perfect confidence booster.
John, wanted to thank you for the custom flag. Beautifully done and proudly displayed in my home office. Packaged very well, arrived in perfect condition. Eye catching as you walk into my office. Thank you again, walt
Try using toungue and groove bead board planks. Go to Lowes and on the very back wall in the lumber section you'll find some planks of wood wrapped in shrink wrap. They have full length to 4ft. The planks are only ⅛ inch thick. Very light weight. But it looks great. My wife and I sell them as well. We use the lighter wood for shipping reasons. But they turn out the same as yours.
@@JohnBuildsIt we also use the thicker wood like yours. because some people want the thicker wood because it more durable. so we do sell both. but we make sure we explain the difference and why one is more expensive than the other. we give multiple options of wood thickness on our site. the quality and artwork are all the same though.
I just finished my fisrt flag for our home. My wife and I love it. I plan on making many more to give and to sale for charity. A few comments: As you suggest I bought a 10x1x10. This was a disaster as by the time I used it it was totally twisted and looked like an airplane propeller. Nevertheless, I used it. For the next flag I shall buy a 2X12X10 or similar that I shall rip, I expect it to be more stable. I shall let you know how it tums out. Also I never used a Dremel in my life, my wife has one. I bought the bits and a plunger attachment then I tried to use it as you do, but it did not work for me. I used sharp wood chisels to cut the perimeter out and then to carve out the center of the stars. Thank you again for your tutorial. For sharing your knowledge as you did ,you are a great guy and a great patriot.
I’ve been kind of intimidated by this project ( before seeing this video) and it is what has gotten me into wood working. The stars have been my main concern as I really want to chisel them out for that added look. Thank you for breaking it down, I will definitely be making this for close friends and myself.
This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?
I've watched a lot of these flag making tutorials, but this one is definitely one of the best. So easy to follow and your explanations are simple. Well done!! Thank-you for making this tutorial with very minimal tools.
i got a tip for you... ive burned a lot of wood, those small torches on the boards have an uneven flame coverage so its hard to get a good even burn... try using a torch you hook up to a 20lb propane tank, much bigger flame and adjustable heat output too, same principle, travel speed dictates burn, much better coverage
@@anthonyo4038 no you dont, and mapp does burn hotter... also most people have a 20lb tank for a grill, and the torch was like 10 bucks... its 10 times faster, if you batch out 20 flags...youre gonna save a crap ton of time
@@ta1ntv1lle39 it is way faster, but I havent perfected my speed and distance with that big sucker though. Neighbors things I'm crazy when it lights off with a boom and jet sound hahaha
@@ta1ntv1lle39 i believe that it's supposed to look rustic, or more natural looking in case you're not familiar with the term. The uneven inconsistency also makes it more unique and adds character. I've seen guys using a chisel and hammer to carve them out, now that is 'hand made', Dremel is not 100% hand made, you are using a power tool to help speed up the process, it depends how you look at it, in the end, depends on what the customer wants, and how much he wants to spend.

@@akaredcrossbow I can't see Elmo's original comment, but I suspect he didn't like this video because, despite the obviously patriotic intent of this project, the burn marks are technically a violation of the US Flag Code, which, among other prohibitions, states, "The flag should never have placed upon it, nor on any part of it, nor attached to it any mark, insignia, letter, word, figure, design, picture, or drawing of any nature." That said, there are much clearer violations of the Flag Code that happen every day, and few people seem to care about it, like using the flag for advertising purposes, or printing it on clothing and other items. Even otherwise extremely patriotic people not only tolerate, but actively participate in acts that are technically in violation of the Flag Code. I can only surmise that these people are unaware of the Flag Code. But the point is, Elmo (I suspect) objected to this video, not because he hates the United States or its flag, but because he LOVES the US and its flag, and he considers this project an act of disrespect to the flag (albeit unintentional). You can disagree with that (though you would also be disagreeing with the US Flag Code), but I don't think it's fair to call Elmo a "piece of #*@%" or a "hater". Indeed, by the standard of adherence to the US Flag Code, Elmo is far more patriotic than you or JohnBuildsIt.
Trevor Young Makes 100% sense! Thank You! I would suspect that every flag now is made with some sort of fire especially the pigments! If that is what he might be upset about he should be mad at the US flags being made in China lol, not an American making a American flag in the US to show his respect to his country Lol. Thank you for the comment and making it clearer!!👍🏻👍🏻
Beautiful job paying homage to Old Glory, not enough young people today who honor our national symbol of freedom. Thank you for your honor to our Flag.

Awesome, thanks for watching!
Loved the razor blade trick for staining. Thanks.
You're a genius man, and true patriot!
🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸
Ralph Duran thank you!!
Starting getting into word working and this is going to be my first project when I am conformable.
That’s awesome man! Thanks for watching!
Thank you for posting this video. I can definitely see a difference in professionalism of yours vs. one of my local builders. Yours is of a higher quality and your satin finish is definitely smoother and of better quality than many that I've seen.
Thanks a lot! 👍🏽
Great explanation on the process. Your flags are fantastic. Look forward to seeing more from you. Keep up the good work.
86jmcade thanks a lot!!
Love that razor blade tip. Good stuff...thanks for sharing.
I just finished making two American Flags following your instructions and they turned out great. I made one for my next door neighbor with a Blue line incorporated in the Flag. Thanks for such a great instructional video.
Awesome man!!
Some good tips. Now I can break out the dreamer and carve some 106 stars ✨. Great idea with the razor blades on creating the boundaries
Guys I am learning woodworking at *TopFineWoodworking. Com* the best website to learn beginner to advance level woodworking
Bro! That was fun to watch. I'm an amateur when it comes to woodwork. I feel like I can still do it. Thanks!
Dwayne Sanders you absolutely can!
@@JohnBuildsIt I have basic tools. I probably need a torch. I'm going to start in this project soon...me and my boys.
How in the hell does anyone not like this video?
Outstanding video! I've been considering making one of these, but it was a little overwhelming. This is the perfect confidence booster.
Glenn Stewart not bad at all! Enjoy!
They probably hate America is why they hate the flag. No patriotism.
John, wanted to thank you for the custom flag. Beautifully done and proudly displayed in my home office. Packaged very well, arrived in perfect condition. Eye catching as you walk into my office. Thank you again, walt
Walt w thanks for the kind words! Glad you like it!!
Great process - very simple with excellent results. Thanks for sharing.
Lynn Lacey thanks a lot!
Nice job. Keep it up. I like how I can watch your video and understand it, without having to spend 30 minutes for 6 minutes of content.
Michael Robinson thank you!!
Disclosure Tv that’s a good idea! Shipping for these is expensive!
@@JohnBuildsIt we also use the thicker wood like yours. because some people want the thicker wood because it more durable. so we do sell both. but we make sure we explain the difference and why one is more expensive than the other. we give multiple options of wood thickness on our site. the quality and artwork are all the same though.
Great video! My question is where did you get the star stencil? Is it home made?
Carona Mage amazon! Link is in the description
This video is the most complete step by step I have seen, and believe me, I have seen a lot... Great job..
Thank you! 👍🏽
Thank you for posting the video . You're awesome at what you do. Keep up the great work.
Great video Man! Clear, concise, and definitely informative. Keep it up!
DocNiemo 1 thank you!!
I just finished my fisrt flag for our home.
My wife and I love it.
I plan on making many more to give and to sale for charity.
A few comments:
As you suggest I bought a 10x1x10.
This was a disaster as by the time I used it it was totally twisted and looked like an airplane propeller.
Nevertheless, I used it.
For the next flag I shall buy a 2X12X10 or similar that I shall rip,
I expect it to be more stable.
Great job and project thx for sharing enjoyed it Be safe and stay well
Nice work! & as others have noted, the razor blade separator idea is awesome !....keep up the good work! :)
I’ve been kind of intimidated by this project ( before seeing this video) and it is what has gotten me into wood working. The stars have been my main concern as I really want to chisel them out for that added look. Thank you for breaking it down, I will definitely be making this for close friends and myself.
This would be a really cool table top
This is a superb wood working book I`ve ever read, *TopFineWoodworking. Com* . Both novice and some skilled woodworker can gain a lot of general info using this reading material. I`ve been very amazed how frequently I use this to look up woods at places like to restore and salvage spots.?
I honestly really loved the way the stars looked before you carved out the middle. It just gave it a nice and unique look to it.
I think so too!
Thanks for teaching us to do this, made myself one
Hard work pays off bud! Fantastic job!
DURTYMAX LML thank you!
First class warms my heart to see a proud American Patriot do his thing so well
Migo Surf thank you!
I've watched a lot of these flag making tutorials, but this one is definitely one of the best. So easy to follow and your explanations are simple. Well done!! Thank-you for making this tutorial with very minimal tools.
Thank you!!
True patriotic presentation. Thanks. I'm making one myself!! I'll buy one after Christmas from you. Keep up the good work!
This is very beautiful. I'm going to try it with my country's flag. Thanks for the idea.
Darrin Lalla awesome!!
i got a tip for you... ive burned a lot of wood, those small torches on the boards have an uneven flame coverage so its hard to get a good even burn... try using a torch you hook up to a 20lb propane tank, much bigger flame and adjustable heat output too, same principle, travel speed dictates burn, much better coverage
@@RPE-Official if uneven inconsistency is your style...sure thing
looks like dog shit to me
I use the yellow MAP gas bottle and has way better heat than propane. You don't need a ridiculous torch set up to a big tank to achieve this.
For you to say that it looks like shit doesn't change everyone else's opinion of it, only their opinion of you. And while we're on the subject of opinions, you should probably keep yours to yourself.
Thanx for the GREAT idea using razor blades to separate the colors when staining! 👍
Thanks for watching!
@@JohnBuildsIt sure thing man!...Thank YOU! 😆
Outstanding video!! The razor blade suggestion to separate the stain was great 👍🏻
Bro that was bad ass. If ever the question arises Don't let anyone tell you Native Americans don't honor the flag. You should see us at Pow Wows. We do a whole honor song for Vets🇺🇸✌
Tommy McCabe awesome thank you!
Thanks for sharing that, it actually gave me a really good feeling inside. Early America royally fucked up in the treatment of Native Americans. Native Americans have served in the US military since WWI and and are still dedicating their lives to this country.
I can vouch for this. I attended the thundering spirit native dance festival in Florida last year and a big part of the opening ceremony was honoring the Flag and Veterans. Gave me goose bumps when I saw it.
We had some badass Native Americans fighting for us in WWII
@Phil McCrevice Apparently recognizing genocide is now "pandering." Your comment sound like white fragility.
Good job brotha, i think this might be the best how to vid in terms of clarity on UA-cam
OkBoston thank you! Means a lot!
Absolutely perfect! Ive been wanting to make one for a long time but have not been able to find exactly what i envisioned. I was excited to finally see the awesome flags you make but very apprehensive to watch the video because I assumed I would be completely lost. I cannot thank you enough for your wonderful explanation. So thorough and you dont hold back. I love that you want others to be able to create the same works of art. Totally selfless. Albeit i might start out using jenga blocks, but ill keep you updated 😉
Thx again
Thank you I used a similar process to make a work bench out of 2x4 's it's my American work bench. 7 foot long by 3 foot wide an 3 inches thick .
Ardy Smith sounds cool!
I really enjoyed this. Hopefully I can get my hubby to start this. Slowly he’s been helping me w my crafts but I believe he would love this more

First time i've watched you, I ove this flag I think it's great. THANK YOU
Joseph Zuber thanks a lot!
I just want to say THANK YOU much for making this step by step instruction for free. Instead of charging a mapped out plan for it. This was my first DIY project and it came out EXCELLENT! My girlfriend was really impressed. Making this flag definitely built my confidence because for a first time built, it came out great. Making me excited to start on my next project which is making a smart mirror and also a epoxy US flag. Again thank you John!!! You deserve more than 39K subs.
Fred Dukeduong thanks so much!!
My first time watching your vid...nice work bro🤙
Jamm 66 Thank you!!
Gives the flag great justice amazing job .
David Smith thanks a lot!!
Also, the torch we use in our shop is the Bernzomatic TS8000. It uses a trigger for on/off and the trigger locks when not in use.
@ 6:43 .... I’d be listening to an audiobook because I’ll be there for awhile.... nice job!
Awesome! I feel that burning wood effect is the best. Thanks for sharing
BigGuy Raczek me too! Thanks for watching!
Question: how do you carve the stars neatly?
I really struggle with that.
How deep do you carve them?
Thank you for all you help.
Frenchie French just a steady hand I suppose! Don’t really have any tips other than what I showed. I pretty much just go deep enough to remove the blue stain
Looks good. I wonder if there is a faster way to achieve the star... that part seems very tedious.
Dannyboyz.......perhaps self adhesive stars that could be peeled off before blue stain then continue to varnish afterwards.
Thanks so much! I'm hoping to make this for hubby for Christmas.
Awesome!!
Beautiful work, tips and flag. You sir, are The Man!
Dirty Hairy thank you!!
Excellent video. I’m retiring soon and looking for a part time hobby to do between golf! Question, how deep are you carving the stars? Looks like it’s just skimming the top coat off. Thanks for sharing.
Bill McSparren yep! Pretty much just removing all the blue stain
Another great video, I just subscribed. Thanks for sharing John
Jeff Hoffman thanks a lot!
John, you nailed it. You gave me some confidence that I can do this too. Thank you from Jacksonville, FL
Awesome!
LOVE this you really do an awesome job! My husband wants to know where you get the star template from? And thank you for such a detailed video on how to make one of these! 🥰😎
Jennifer Lummus thank you! Amazon link is in the description
John these are awesome! You’ve inspired me to make some ‘thin blue line’ flags for my police officer buddies. Can I ask what kind of clamps you are using?? I use cheapies from Harbor Freight but need to up my game a bit on clamps. Thanks! Great video.
Jimmy Hollywood in the video they’re just old pipe clamps. I now use Bessey parallel clamps
Thanks for the quick reply, man. Shows you’re a legit dude truly interested in helping people.

Would like to know the template size for the stars or where to get it
Kevin's Workshop link is in the description
I watched this and thought: "Hell, these look pretty easy. I can make a bunch of wood flags and sell them for profit." I headed for the garage to get a few tools, but somewhere along the way I forgot what I was going to do, and so I went to the fridge, got myself a beer and then another, and another... that's about it.
Hahaha
Maybe u can make a video on how to zip zip zip ?
Same happens to me except with green stuff in a jar instead of beer 😄
Well sometimes we have to sit back and relax
@@ModernGentleman black tar heroine also does the trick for about a day and a half. Highly recommended. Better than beer and green.
Beautiful. God bless the U.S.A.
Thank You for a great tutorial. After watching your video I made 4 flags and gave then to neighbors and family who were vets for the 4th of July as a Thank You for their service... they loved them. I really enjoyed making them ( I only changed one thing, I biscuit joined all the strips to get rid of the back braces)
San Diegans awesome!!
Thank you so much John. Have all the power tools, little worried about stars but will give it a go, thank you so much.
Thumbs up for not using CNC and calling it "Handmade" like most people do
Kleo 84 what is CNC?
@@lowspeak it's basically a computer controlled router. You choose your design on the computer and it does the work for you. You can look it up on UA-cam.
I've seen guys using a chisel and hammer to carve them out, now that is 'hand made', Dremel is not 100% hand made, you are using a power tool to help speed up the process, it depends how you look at it, in the end, depends on what the customer wants, and how much he wants to spend.
@@abnerrivera3986 yawn~~~ seen a guy used his nails and teeth to carve it, now THAT'S "hand job" I mean "hand made"...

jackbquick123 thanks so much!!
Its a piece of art and bibelot will be honor and brought for me to have it in my home.
Where can I buy the star template. What size is it ?

It's amazing to me that there are people that would give this video a thumbs down. Miserable pieces of #*@%. Such haters. Anyways... Great job man! Thanks for sharing!
Rosario Sorbello hahaha thank you!!
I gave it a thumbs down for specific and logical reasons.
Elmo Blatch well let’s hear your reasons!!!
Thats cool...and every classroom in AMERICA should have those
Beautiful job paying homage to Old Glory, not enough young people today who honor our national symbol of freedom. Thank you for your honor to our Flag.
Thanks for watching!
Could you make one for the Texas flag... that would be amazing
I would love to see a Texas Flag made.

Gonna try to do this with some reclaimed wood studs from a house being demolished.
Great job, my concern is gluing the slats on the back of the flag with the wood grain apposing each other. I have seen project warp when temperature and humidity levels change during the course of the year.
I’ve never had an issue. The thin strips expansion/contraction is negligible
