    Fun fact: I just compared old pics from a trip to Thailand in 1997 with the photo you used at 2:04. I got a photo from exactly the same perspective, just with a little less houses in the river. Last year I got my gang of 10 dwarf chain loaches. It was fun to find out, I once have been to their natural habitat.

    I have 4 yo-yo loaches that I picked up to help with a pest snail infestation in my 6ft long 90 gallon I built myself. They were very effective. They have grown considerably in 2 1/2 years and have amazing patterns that have replaced the Yo-Yo found on their side when young. They race back and forth along the length of the tank with 5 Denison barbs. They share their tank with 8 platinum angelfish, 4 Bolivian rams, 18 albino cory’s and 4 albino bristle nose. I really like the activity the loach bring to my community aquarium

    Hands down the pea puffer is the best pest snail getter. Yes they can be a bit much. I bought 4 for my planted 125 gallon community tank. Watched them for a few days . Two are focused on predating, two were focused on everyone else and each other. So I removed those two. Now I have two in my community and they are very happy. They only really get bothered by each other, but the tank is big enough that they dont have to deal with each other much . I had probably 500-1000 pest snails in my tank. I could not find any inside of 2 weeks . They're still there they just only come out at night now .

    I have a group of 20 in a 75 gallon. They have killed at least 6 full grown tiger barbs, mostly attacks the side of the barbs until they die. I found out one of the loach had a deformed mouth and I think it wasn't getting enough food so it resorted to nipping and biting the sides of the barbs. After I culled that one, everything was back to being ok! Other tank mates are 5 fully grown giant danios and 5 fully grown tiger barbs.

    I have a dozen in a 60g tank along with some S. Lucipinnis. They play all day long and are a joy to watch. They are first to the food and eat like mini clown loaches - in other words - they are little piggies. They like flake food and micro pellets, but will attack larger shrimp pellets as well. All I can say is FUN FUN FUN!!!

  • @MrRaylove1
    @MrRaylove1 4 роки тому +2

    Great video. I bought my 6 four years ago. At first I found them to be quite aggressive - they DID tear the fins of my full grown Angelfish and worried anything with long fins. I subsequently read reports of them biting eyes of sedentary fish such as corys. I didn't have any corys but I observed them chasing fully grown red scissortails and denisoni barbs trying to bite their eyes but luckily they were too fast for them.
    Eventually as they got a bit older they settled down and now they act as described in this video. They don't worry my other fish though I haven't risked any really long finned species with them nor any other bottom dwellers.
    Given my experience I would say exercise caution when considering tank mates when they are young, but in the right tank these are indeed great characters!
    One other thing - they may also nibble tender plants. My Ludwigia often has holes but luckily it grows so fast it can cope with their attention.

    I watched many videos and read reviews about these before buying 6 for my community tank, with I’d say 90% of people saying positive things about them. I had a big pest snail population I was trying to reduce hence my interest in them.
    However it has been the single biggest mistake since starting in the aquarium hobby.
    In the first week they ate out the eyes of a couple of my cardinal tetras, and then I had an outbreak of Ick likely caused due to the stress caused by this behaviour. Although when I watched the tank I didn’t tend to see any aggression toward the community, it’s a safe bet they were responsible for the eye eating as I have since researched this specifically and others have experienced the same thing.
    The loaches had plenty food on offer so it’s not as if they were desperately hungry, it seems to be an unfortunate part of their nature, I guess it’s why they’re good at eating the snails, which I can confirm they did do with very few snails left visible after a week.
    I therefore had to obviously remove the loaches which being such fast and bottom dwelling hiders, I had to complete disassemble a heavily planted tank that I was very proud of just to get them out.
    The experience has been awful, there’s still 1 in there I’m unable to find as they’re so elusive when they want to hide and I’m now treating the tank for ick.
    I would really not recommend in a peaceful community tank, and just had to share this for other keepers to see.

    • @Inessesst
      @Inessesst Рік тому

      Yes, they’re so NOT a peaceful community fish! I gave these a try in a large (450 liter) community tank and they were stressing out and chasing both each other and many of the slower fish, bit my slow pearl gouramis (they went all pale because of that) and made my usually very outgoing and active diamond tetras hiding among the plants. The loaches are incredibly active so they MUST have a large tank. Yes they do eat snails but they’re semi-aggressive fish and they should be put in a community tank with big caution. Probably would work better with some very active, fast and semi-aggressive species.

    That is such a beautiful tank! May I ask what size it is? Sonic looks exactly like one of my Bettas, Boo but the resemblance ends there. Sadly, Boo does not seem to enjoy the company of busy tankmates, and he had to be moved from my community aquarium to his own private quarters. He didn't even like my ember tetras, and I can't imagine how he'd react to being sniffed by a school of inquisitive loaches! Cool fish, though. I have five khulis in my 100L tank and I see them all the time! They are extremely lively and even like to sit high up on roots. They share the tank with seven African dwarf frogs, four endler guppy fry that outsmarted the frogs (adults died a few months after purchase but left a lot of fry) and a few snails, and they get along great. My tank is heavily planted, and I have a lot of floater plants for shade. I've never even seen them hide in the sand. They dig in it, but mostly looking for food. They aren't scared of my frogs at all, they will even sit on them if they get in the way hahah.

    I think my Botha plucked the barbells off my placid Cory Dora’s. I did not realize until I purchased young NEW Cory’s and noticed they had perky barbells and my older ones were BALD. As soon as I saw that I put the Cory’s in a tank WITHOUT any Botias. Cory seems happier now. So WATCH OUT FOR BARBELL PLUCKING. good grief! Otherwise I LOVE THESE BOTIAS. PETITE SIZED FISH
