I discovered peacock gudgeons about a month ago, when I found sparkling gouramis and mistakenly got one thinking it had to be a pink one. I now have 2 since OCD is real and I found one when I was looking for something completely different. Heavily planted 10gal with a lot of tetras (4 types), pearl danios, 4 sparkling gouramis, 2 otocinculus catfish, 2 snails and some ghost shrimp. They engage with the other fish, super social with slower schooling fish (they like the tetras and gouramis, not so much the danios). The first thing they did in the tank was basically ride the current from the filter, which the tetras now do. Big fan myself.

This set me off watching your other videos about Hillstream Loaches lol, they're fascinating I've got to get one! I love Khuli Loaches too, I think they're my favourite fish - the ultimate party dude's clubbin' it after dark😎
I have had most of the fish on this list, though some in larger than nano tanks. Khuli loaches were great until I got some diseased fish and added a treatment. That was my first lesson about scaleless fish and copper. I don't know if they are the same but I had great fun with what were called Malabar puffers all the years ago I had them, so much personality for their size. Best oddball I ever had, in a wide but short tank was a weather loach, they really do just survive about anything, they can even temporarily move on land to get to new waters etc. When a storm or bad weather came he would let you know well in advance 👍
Kuli loach..."they've got these black little beady eyes" made me lol. They DO have beady little eyes. 😂 👍💓👍 P/S I want to see a tank with little hillstream loach babies.
I only have 1 kuhli loach,my dad caught it when it was flooding(it's very normal for my country)while catching some fish to eat. Im worried that it might not do well in my 10 gallon planted tank, but luckily it seems well and active,i do plant more heavily to provide hiding spots
I have two reticulated hillstream loaches (Sewellia lineolata) and one borneo sucker (Pseudogastromyson myseri) and 4-6 kuhli loaches (I put in 6, but only ever see 4 at a time... not sure if there are still 6). They're such fun fish, so cute, and I love that they're shrimp safe! I definitely think more people would get hillstream loaches if there wasn't so much misinformation online about them requiring fast flow, but they can also be hard to find. None of my local fish stores keep them in regular stock, I had to order them online from a few cities away.
Will also buy those hillstream loachdz and Kuhliis. Such amazing fishes. Can't wait to start with the hobby as I receive my 240liter aquarium next week!☺️
I love my kuhli loaches. I have six of them in my heavily planted, lots of hardscape 100 gallon tank. You'd think they would disappear and I'd never see them, but they are really active and energetic and I can usually spot at least three or four at all times.
@@Pallidum I've got nine Black Khulis, and I can usually glance at my tank and count off around 5 of them. They were skittish of their Cory tank mates for all of three hours before they realized everyone was peaceful.
I absolutely adore my hillstreams! They’re such perfect little fish. I love when they “doot doot” across the tank. Such fascinating and enjoyable fishies :)
I have two hillstream loaches in my 20 long and I adore them! They are super cute and always active day and night. I think people shy away from them because everyone says they need fast moving water. After seeing a video that Cory had done where he said they do fine in a slow moving tank I went for it and I am very happy that I did.
Question: Do you think you're do more experimentations with aquatic amphibians like African dwarph frogs and newts? I've especially heard that adf's make pretty good tankmates with most fish with having around the same amount of success as a betta. :)
I can say from experience that adf WILL go after a betta and vice-versa. IF adf can be kept in community tanks I’d think it would only work if the tank is large, the fish are all bigger than the adf, and the fish be herbivores.
I keep a couple of adf's in a tank together with my guppies so they can eat their offspring and I don't get an overcrowded tank. You shouldn't keep adf's in a big tank because those are probably too deep for them, as they need to go to the surface to breathe.
I put 5 Clown Loaches in a 29 gallon community tank of several varieties of fish. I was expecting the Clowns to bond to each other. I even put a cave inside so they could hang out. However, they don't seem to be interested in schooling, preferring to swim independently.
I was so excited when I got my hill stream loach. I did so much research and had the perfect tank setup. He lasted every bit of 1 and 1/2 days before my map turtle ate him. My turtle lives with many different types of barbs and has never ever been interested in eating them. I just assumed my hill stream loach would swim away if sippy my turtle went for him but he did not. And it was horrible.

@@carriephillips6054 Happy early Bday;) I got mine this Monday and they're mesmerizing to watch sliding from the glass to the substrate. They're more fun to watch than my clown plecos which I swear they're pet rocks.
My 2 Hillstream Loaches are always together and never fight. With my 2 Clown Plecos and my 10 Armano Shrimps they’re my little workers. I have soft water with 2 sponge filters in a 30 gal tank. Everyone seems happy too.
I had this really cool dwarf eel. It was kinda dark brown and blue. I don’t remember what it was called and I’ve never found another. I bought a special hide for it, it would just sit in there with its head showing, I swear watching me, and come out for me at feed time or if I put my finger in the tank. It was super easy to look after, it would eat anything, not aggressive and did well in a community tank. Wish I could find another, it was like the rest of the fish were fish, and then this eel had its own distinct personality.
So I wasn’t going to get a hillstream loach because the info says it need fast moving water. So you are keeping them with just a spine finlter and doing fine?
Love my peacock gudgeons! Bought 7 a few months ago, currently raising about 40 of their fry in a separate tank. Have had 2 batches of eggs since, which daddy ate all of lol
I had two (2) Kooly Loaches, but each of them died when they propelled themselves out of my tall 55" tank. It was at different times/dates. After flying out of the tank, they fell several feet before hitting the ground. They died within days of what I must assume were massive internal injuries due to the fall. Too bad because they were cool! Great coloring!
Pigmy puffers also don't play well with inverts. They'll eat your snails and your shrimps. One thing you can do for them though, is get a tank really green with algae, let snails grow and multiply in it (and they will multiply if there's lots of algae), then throw them in the puffer tank when their numbers start getting up there. Personally, I can't bare to do that, so I don't keep puffers. It's almost limitless free food for people who can though. Also, feeding them live snails will keep their teeth worn down to a desirable level so you don't have to trim them yourself, which risks all manner of problems, including the death of the puffer fish. Personally, I'd rather stick with my hillstream loaches, rocket tails, cardinal tetras, and corys. I'm right with you about hillstream loaches. They are awesome. I'm not quite sure why they qualify as oddballs in the industry because loaches aren't rare in the hobby, and neither are fish which will clean the glass. They are just cool little fish, and every single one of them which I have had has personality by the truck load.
I used to have a kulhi loach, and when he first went into my 6 gallon, I noticed that he had ick, It’s really easy to cure, and if you fish has ick, and has a weak immune system, they will go crazy, and that’s what happend
The marbled hatchets are great but I will agree, they are FRAGILE fish! If you can keep them past the 1 or 2 week mark you’re probs safe. And for these guys the group or 6+ is very important
My top favorite small fish That are not necessarily found in every pet store is definitely dwarf puffer. Followed closely by the Pygmy Cory, Norman's lampeye killifish, celestial pearl danios, and Endlers. I think I'm gonna have to go get some hillstream loaches now. I think I didn't get them because I'd hurt they like cool waters and lots of motion and I don't have that but if they're good for not that then I'm getting them.
Voltron was a male btw. Female peacock gudgeons have a bright yellow belly, black tip fins, and also a pointed face. Most people say the female gudgeons are the prettier ones.
Kuhli loach are great, I had 2 but thought I'd lost one, then found him in the internal power filter, how long he'd been in there I'll never know, or how he got in. Returned to tank with his mate, and they now seem to spend more daylight time active. Definitely a taking point when people see the tank.
When she says kuhli loaches are harder she means it😭 in my way home after purchasing some I tripped on my skateboard and my bag popped! My loaches were in the ground flopping around😭 i quickly pryed them of the ground with multiple fails cuz of how wormy and slippery they are untill i finally picked all of them up into the little water left in my bag. 4 months later mine are thriving and happy :)
Love your show; however, I have to dissagree with your opinion on Peacock grudgeons. You definately need a school of about nine of these to see their interactions. Also, these fish have the peculiar breeding behavior where the male cares for the eggs inside of clay pots or rocks and sometimes takes care of the fry too..sometimes. The hillstream loach is my favorite and I hope to get some striped khulli loach fish.
I think Kuhli loaches are pretty cool, but I can’t keep them in my tank. I’ve had two already, they both died within a few days of each other. Even before they died I had my water tested by pet store employees, they said the water is perfect. They’re just delicate fish I guess. I do have a Hillstream loach, he’s doing great.
I had experience with marbled hatchet fish. They are really cool, awesome fish, but they have a tendency to jump. A LOT. And I mean I had 3 of them and all of them died becuse they found a way to jump out of the tank. Which is something im still bewildered by to this day. My tank has a top, and the only small opening is at the back főt the cables of the equipment to go through. I even put a small plastic piece at one of these openings as a precaution. Didn't stop them. So if anyone plans on keeping them, make sure to have as little to no openings on your lid. Otherwise they will find a way.
I love imagining that there are people out there giving *dishonest* fish reviews 🤣 "Um, I don't like corydoras very much because they tend to move around the tank a lot and I find it very disorienting." *pauses tape to laugh uncontrollably because in fact he loves corydoras. he loves them very much.*
I have 6 kuhli loaches in a 16g tank with c habrosus. I rarely ever see them. I like the hill stream loach. When I ever get a tank conducive to a stream setup I’ll get a few.
As multiple people in the Hobby have pointed out, that's the O2 levels that causes that. You can get them to spawn (a sign of perfect conditions in the fishes point of view) in a tank with near zero flow, as long as it has a lot of dissolved O2. A high flow is the EASIEST way to do this, however their are other ways including a combination of heavy plants and CO2 injection (which can lead to pearling a sign of complete O2 saturation in the water) or Airstone as long as it has a decent air pump AND defuses the bubbles well decently.
Some of the sewellia in the video do not look like sewellia lineonata to me. I saw them sold seperately in the fish store under another latin name. The lineonata was very calm and didn't mind me looking at them, but the other kind was super shy, bigger and with another pattern on their bodies. Finer dots. Some of your sewellia look more like those ones.
Same here last year we got six hatchetfish and they infected my whole tank with ich. About 50 odd fish died. I didnt quarantine sadly:(( my tank recovered however and we had 70 corydoras babies and 30 Guppy babys.
Oh, I'm so glad to hear that! Unfortunately most of the hatchetfish were too far gone, even when I re-dosed Paraguard, but thankfully the rest of the fish all survived and some of them never even got any spots (that I could see).
Most of the nano fish I've kept like slower flow, so I just look to see if they're being whipped around the tank too much. Not sure how to judge if the flow is fast enough, but I do try to avoid any dead spots in the tank or oil slicks at the surface.
*What's your favorite oddball nano fish that fits in 20 gallons or less?*

The marbled hatchets are great but I will agree, they are FRAGILE fish!
If you can keep them past the 1 or 2 week mark you’re probs safe. And for these guys the group or 6+ is very important
Thanks to watching your videos, I found kuhli and hillstream loaches. They're are so cute!
Thank you I couldn’t get away with your videos till recently I don’t know why but I love them now thank you for the videos/information xx
Borneo loach mini loach the best pet ever! So fun and dithery and peaceful with my grouchy betta. They ignore him 100%
I LOVE Khuli loaches!!!! I have 10 in my Asian tank and they' re awesome!
Let’s hope your tanks big
I like how shes just reviewing an entire species
My top favorite small fish That are not necessarily found in every pet store is definitely dwarf puffer. Followed closely by the Pygmy Cory, Norman's lampeye killifish, celestial pearl danios, and Endlers.
I think I'm gonna have to go get some hillstream loaches now. I think I didn't get them because I'd hurt they like cool waters and lots of motion and I don't have that but if they're good for not that then I'm getting them.
Was on the fence about Hillstreams but definitely going to need a few now 😊
Voltron was a male btw.
I got to agree, hillstream loaches rock! I keep mine with a CRS colony 🌿
I have peapuffers in my 60 gallon along with several other fish (neon tetras, Cory's, and a knife fish) and haven't had any issues.
I wish you would have pointed out the blue spark in the hillstream loach eyes. Admittedly I'm a guy but that spark in a fish's eyes
I have a couple of fan shrimps in my community tank. If I add a few hill stream loaches, do you think they'll eat the shrimps?
I don't think that hillstream loaches are big enough to eat an adult, but a baby or eggs might be in danger
You listed my top three, hillstream loach, pea puffers and marbled hatchet fish.
The Kuhli Loach reminds me of Slimy Oscar the Grouch’s pet worm💯😂
A good thing to remember is a full coverage lid for Marble Hatchet fish, because they are naturally very good jumpers.
I have 6 kuhli loaches in a 16g tank with c habrosus. I rarely ever see them. I like the hill stream loach. When I ever get a tank conducive to a stream setup I’ll get a few.
hillstream loaches still need cold water with lots of flow, i kept the in both situations and they did a LOT better in the tank with lots of flow
Well friend, after watching your video probably like… Six or seven times, I finally went out and scooped a couple hillstream loaches. Thank you!!
Thanks for the video! Do you know if hillstream or kuhli loaches have any issues with red cherry shrimps?
Kuhli loaches definitely dont
Love my Hillstream Loaches. Mine breed in my 55g. They just need lots of rocks.
I've always wanted a Kuli loach. I heard that they weren't very hardy, so I'm surprised to hear they apparently do pretty good?
Thank you for the useful information and for sharing your experiences! =)
Cool I just set up a 29gal. Gonna have to try them hill stream loaches.
I absolutely love kuhlis, but they have never been very hardy for me. If anything, they seem a bit delicate for a bottom feeder.
I have a pea puffer colony, with a couple Reticulated Hillstreams, and they do fine!
That sounds like such an awesome oddball tank!
Was gunna grab a hillstream loach the other day!!!!! But convinced myself they looked too much like the leech I plucked off my leg a while back
Some of the sewellia in the video do not look like sewellia lineonata to me. I saw them sold seperately in the fish store under another latin name. The lineonata was very calm and didn't mind me looking at them, but the other kind was super shy, bigger and with another pattern on their bodies. Finer dots. Some of your sewellia look more like those ones.
I love your pet names i.e. Soudwave and Voltron.
I miss my gudgeons, they are GORGEOUS. Definitely one of my favorites, followed by my halfbeaks
Thank you for this video! Would the Hillstream loach outcompete other bottom dwellers for food? Like Corys or shrimp? Thank you!
I don’t think so, because corys and shrimps are usually very fast. Hillstream loaches are usually the same speed as other bottom dwellers.
Pea puffers are just little hate marbles, they are cute but absolutely brutal on anything that isn't bigger and meaner than they are!
Pea puffers are adorable but they are threatened by aquarium trade so be sure to get captive-bred puffers
I love our loaches! So much fun. To watch
I want some kuhli loaches at some point, currently have a sumo loach and they are cool little fish aswell
While they’re not good with community tanks I have 12 pea puffers and they do great together actually a social fish with themselves
No rush but are you going to post or have updates of your tanks?
Also straight forward question: How do you know if the water flow is just right in your tank?
Most of the nano fish I've kept like slower flow, so I just look to see if they're being whipped around the tank too much. Not sure how to judge if the flow is fast enough, but I do try to avoid any dead spots in the tank or oil slicks at the surface.
I really want 6 peacock gudgeons for my tank... good luck to me finding them.
I was told at the fish store that peacock gundgeons would co exist with my betta… they did not they killed him only a week after introduction
Freshwater gobies are seen as oddball fish because most people think they’re only saltwater For most of my life I thought they were only saltwater
What did you do when you were away for the "weekend" from your desk for feeding the Pea Puffer? If you were gone 2-3 days... what did you do?
