Hi John and Lisa! I am planning to have a 20 gallon tank with 1 Betta, 10 Neon Tetras, 3 Kuhli Loaches, and a couple blue mystery snails from your site. In addition to this is I will have Java Fern, Anubias Bartari, and Catapa Leaves. Multiple sources have said after a tank is cycled, neons wouldn’t be the best first fish due to their lack in hardiness. So if I am putting in the Betta and Kuhli loaches in my main tank, how will my neons survive a cycled quarantine tank? Should I put the Betta and Kuhli loaches in the quarantine tank first then move them to the main tank and add the Neon Tetras to the quarantine tank? How should I approach this situation?
When I was 7 I used to keep a 2 gallon aquarium and got a common pleco. Embarrassed about my early aquarium journey but I am so proud of how the hobby has evolved for me. Just so sad about all the fish I didn’t know how to care for properly as a child. My education on caring for my fish now is largely in thanks to you John and Lisa.
I used to work at PetSmart and the common plecos were definitely one of the most mistreated. I'd try to tell people how big they'd get and customers would either a) say they didn't care, b) the ones they had before never got that big and they can just keep it small by keeping it in a small tank, or c) say they'd put it in the local lake when it got too big. It was insane!
Ask questions 1st and say no if the care will be bad. Ask whats in their tank already, etc, so you can make a lie or excuse not to sell...example, this pleco eats xyz or destroys xyz because those ppl dnt do research 1st. 😂 Jus make it sound terrible to have 1. Or my boss will not allow the sale because of tank size. You have to speak to them for override of sale and boss its here until next week because of management of multiple stores 🤷🏾♀️ anything
You mean I still got to continue to clean tank like I normally do?? Dang it you ruined my day…I want all those fish to do it for me. I’m so sad that I have to tell that I love you guys and you guys continue to be my favorite UA-cam fish keepers to listen and learn from. Thanks for all that you have done and continue to do!!
all fish eat poop till all good stuff is digested and poop with no nutrient hits the bottom, but ultimately, poop which has no vitamin or anything is dissolved into the soil just like a fertilizer. For that, you need to have soil on the bottom, and sand on top of (Lets say 2cm of soil and 4cm of sand on top of it). Best food for soil is dead stuff or poop from animals (Fertilizers)
I added a dozen Amano shrimp to my community tank s few years ago and they were an absolute game changer. Not only do they scurry around eating all the detritus, they are very entertaining to watch!
1) Hardy fishes like Zebra danios (do NOT over do it) 2) Feed them veggie flakes. 3) Have Amano shrimps in there with a few nerite snails. *Feed once MAYbe twice a week.
4ft heavily planted low boy with peppered cory gang and amano shrimp herd. Thought my peppers where 2 species as originally in 2 tanks until I put them in together. Turns out the smaller ones were male whilst the plumper female. Now have an ever growing very healthy active gang that go into breeding mode every time I do water changes or filter cleaning once a week. Great video! 😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
Omg here I was waiting on John to say anything about a poop eating fish and it just went to words on a screen lmao I laughed so hard and still laughing..Thanks John .. you got me lol
there is one living thing in an aquarium that eats poop and its extremly important for the health of the inhabitents. its also something thats very often neglected because you cant see it, and thats bacteria!
Lmfao😂😅😂😅 hitting us with a sopranos ending. The whole time I'm thinking 🤔 wait a minute hold on here, I know there's no poop eating fish. But maybe you knew something I didn't lol. Nice 👌
The only fish which has been actually recorded eating p*op is the Scatophagus - But it gets 40 cm.s long (and needs, thus 500 lt.s or more) and lives in brackish or marine water; also, it will obviously prefer other food sources, given the possibility. The best thing which can, in a way, "eat" the p*op is a good vegetation - Plants will use organic waste as fertilizer. Apart from that, my clean-up crew cunsists in a Bristlenose and lots of Malayan trumpet snails, but I still do my weekly water change. The clean-up crew gives an hand, but it actually is the keeper to be responsible for the main task.
Snails do a great job. Bought 10 Ramshorn snails a couple of years ago. Now my turtles get a few dozen weekly to eat. Buying more than 10 is just a waste of money. They will breed.
I would add Chinese Algae Eater to the list of fish that should be removed from the hobby. I bought one for a 20-gallon tank to...clean algae. It was one inch long when I bought it, about 9" long when I gave it up for adoption to a local fish store because it was terrorizing the rest of the community.
We love our Cherry and Amano shrimp. They really are such characters and always foraging. The Amano do love a mini algae wafer and happily carry them away to feast. I could easily have a tank just filled with just Shrimp
My 75 has corys, a Bristlenose, red cherry shrimp, and various snails (including some pest ones). Along with a bunch of smallish community fish. I do regular water changes, and really haven’t had to vacuum my sand or clean the inside of my glass in a long time
John, if you say "... and I was told that 5 inches is above the average.", you need to make a pause after that, because we all collectively are saying "And that's what she said!" out loudly.
My aquarium is 90 gallon does keeping pleco in it still is a bad thing I got like three of them In it and it’s doing fine I am just asking am I fish abusing?
Don't know when you post this but seen it today and saved it in my watch list just finished my water changes lol I'm watching this cuz you made it it's that simple
I had a common pleco in a 55-gallon tank, and then I had to move him to a 75-gallon tank. Then, I had to give them to someone with an even bigger tank.
THANK YOU for addressing the common pleco issue!!! I wish we didn't sell them! Box stores are for BEGINNERS! And unfortunately the associates are often not educated enough on them, the customer starts a riot if they can't get their 8yr old one for their 10g or the company pushes the sales for them. They make more of a mess than anything else. Or people don't believe they get that big. Drives me crazy!
Lol!😅 There is no fish that eat other fishes poop 💩. I do have a question. Can shrimp and Corydora's live together? I'm setting up my first 20 gallon tank. It is a standard. Stocking with Green Kubotai Rasboras and Harlequin Raboras. It will be heavily planted. I just can't decide which clean up crew to use. I was thinking about Amano shrimp and Corydora's? Or would snails and Corydora's be better?
I have found that those cheap ghost shrimp do real well on algae. If you can get them past those first 72 hrs. in your tank they are voracious eaters. Unfortunately they die so easily because of the poor conditions their bred in.
Well, that sucks the video cut off right when you were going to mention it! In all seriousness when most people talk about hating snails I would put money on that they're talking about pond snails. Mystery snails if you don't want more you just pull out the egg sack and you're done. Pond snail eggs are so hard to find that you have more before you know it.
I'm new to fish keeping so could you tell me how to control algae if the clean up crew won't do it? Your advice is much appreciated & do certain snails eat fish poop?
I have a relatively new tank. Going into it's 2nd month. I have 5 tetras (pristella) in there. I added additional aeration, live plants, and a different light on a timer, that has an adjustable light level(the fish were not happy with the plain LED-scared). I do have plenty of natural light, so the tank light is only set for 6hrs. I do weekly water changes. But, I'm getting hair algea. All my standard parameters are good. It's only a 10gallon tank. What is my best course of action?
John and Lisa, Awesome video I love it so funny especially the ending. There is no fish that eats poop correct.
