For anyone else who might try to recreate this patch, here are some insights I've gleaned from my own attempts. Caveat: My Neutron does not always work... correctly. It is beset with many issues that upon googling trying to troubleshoot seem common. I might also be wrong. Results may vary. Patching: S&H to LFO SHAPE LFO to ATT1 IN ATT1 to OSC2 Both oscillators are sawtooth waves slightly out of tune with one another. My Neutron likes to have all 3 range lights illuminated to get the best sound but I can almost guarantee that's because mine is fucked up. OSC SYNC is on as seen in the video and the widths are offset from each other as well. VCF frequency is happiest around... 1130. I keep resonance at about 8 or 9, same with mod depth. LFO rate is all the way down, and remember to keep LFO shape at noon. I don't think the envelope settings make a huge difference. S&H rate fully CCW, Glide fully CW. Slew ~9, Porta Time ~1030. Attenuator 1 works best for me at 8 or 9. I like a little Drive, no Tone, and Level at max. The Delay does offer a little bit more character, I'd say it's user preference. The biggest things that shape the sound of this patch besides oscillator tuning are the filter frequency, resonance, and slew. I got mine pretty dang close like this. Pick your favorite reverb and if you're wondering "How much reverb should I use?" the answer is "Yes." Have fun!
@@OsmtwcIt took a lot of fanagling. Like I said, I know mine has some specific issues. My friend who taught me told me as much, I think it has some weird bleed with the mod depth that I don't fully understand. I also think the oscillator range is messed up as well. I have two UA-cam accounts - if you read one of my other comments I left on here asking for more patch info (under @LEdHeadW) you should get some more info if you hadn't read those yet. Make sure you absolutely crank the reverb, it won't sound right without heaps of it. The settings I laid out should get you close. But you'll definitely have to play around with it. It's really fun to mess with the delay time on this, you can get it absolutely screaming. I think patching the S&H (sampling noise with a lot of slew) into delay time is a crucial piece. It's mostly detuned oscillators, and modulation of LFO shape, filter freq, and delay time.
Great track! Makes me feel like im in a space ship or in a hive mind, maybe even a military submarine. Definitely gives me a feeling that is a good feeling but is pretty hard to put into words. Keep up the good work!
Dude that’s such a good idea. Just make your own ambient writing focus music, let knob twiddling be an occasional distraction from writing to modulate your vibe - perfect.
Sounds very similar to the first track off of that Coil side project Time Machines. Absolutely massive and monolithic in scope. I seriously can’t get enough of these drones!! 🔊
ISS Commander Miguel Tavares draws in a relaxed sigh as he shoots a photograph of the sun setting behind Earth's horizon. He slowly pulls the camera away from his face as he takes in one final view from the space station's cupola. Accompanying him is a young and enthusiastic engineer, Svetlana Kurylenko, now on the 4th day of her first ever mission to the ISS. She moves in as Tavares vacates the cupola's main viewing station. "Got some nice picture?" she asks him. "Oh you bet! Now, it's your turn Kurylenko. See if you can best my photography skills!" he says as he gently pushes to the side, making way for Svetlana. As she floats to the cupola, Commander Tavares hears someone calling out to him. "Sounds like Takeshi is looking for you commander" she says as she grabs the camera and pulls it in. There, not far on the dark side of Earth's horizon, are some beautiful green and red auroras, dancing over the northern half of Scandinavia. She pulls the camera to her right eye, and begins to work the telephoto zoom lens, framing what she knows will be a beautiful photo. "Commander, are you seeing this?" she says. No answer. Before she could ask again, there's a bright light that starts filtering in through the right side of the viewfinder, and not just any light. It's something that is bright enough that it's creating a strong lens flare, drowning out the background. "That's strange" she thought to herself. She pulls the camera away from her right eye, and suddenly realizes where the light is coming from. She freezes in place, almost too afraid to stare at the light source since she doesn't need to see it to know what it is. This is also when she starts to notice its warmth hitting the right side of her body. "Commander, the sun... didn't it just set?" she asks, confused, and with fear setting in her voice. "I... that's... that's not the sun..." he replies. She turns around to look at the commander, only to then yell in horror.

Just listened to this while reading the bulk of the 4th act of "Gideon The Ninth" by Tamsyn Muir. This patch really provided an excellent backdrop for the events in the book. Thank you so much for making this available.
Do you remember what the s&h is sampling and what's clocking it? Noise, maybe? I always struggled to get my brain around the internal signal path of the neutron so I just use mine as its individual parts with the rest of my rack. I could just modulate the lfo wave with any number of other things of course, but I'd love to try to recreate this one using only my neutron. Love your channel, fall asleep to it all the time. Thank you!
Hi there! Thanks for your comment, if memory serves, the S&H is self clocking at its slowest rate and is sampling noise. This then modulates the delay time. I love the Neutron dearly, but I know what you mean about the signal path, it’d be great if some of the routing was on the panel. I constantly mix up the envelopes - TDZ
I have the same problem! There are a couple overlays and replacement front panels that have much better labeling for all the routing, I might get one or two of those soon. @@thedronezone2128
Are you using any sequencers or external controllers? Or is this purely the Neutron droning to us? Disregard! I found the answer to my question down below. Awesome work!
Listening to your patches while watching the La Palma volcano erupt - a marriage made in heaven (or hades perhaps). Nice work. I should have gone for the Neutron instead of the MiniBrute 2S :(
The Neutron could have been made as an expander module for the MiniBrute, same form factor with knobs to the left and patchbay to the right, the same width, with complimentary features, i.e. the neutron has only 1 LFO but the MiniBrute has 4. The 2 together make a monster synth I dubbed the Brutron.
Wow. I am new to this type of music. Other generative ambient music sort of sounds like bleeps and bells, what makes this so different? Is the equipmemt different (eurorack comes to mind) or how its patched?

Can you give more insights on the patch - it seems rather simple for an generative drone - and sounds amazing btw? I was just wondering how such a complex sound can be achieved with such little patching. Are midi notes involved? Cheers and keep up the great work!
Hi, thanks for the comment. I recorded this one a little while ago now, so bear with me whilst I try to remember. No MIDI or sequencing was involved. The oscillators are both using sawtooth waves and are synced, the pitch of OSC 2 is being slowly modulated by the LFO. The waveform of the LFO is being changed randomly by the sample & hold. The whole patch is then recorded into Logic and drenched in reverb.
@@paulczerner3286 You can get most of the way there, for sure! There's no other external effects, only the reverb. You can probably do a lot with the built-in delay, but in this patch it was already in use.
