If anything, I believe that Subterranean Empires should be somewhat more resistant to some of the adverse effects of the storms, since their planetary colonies are basically giant mines, bunkers and storm shelters to begin with.
Finally! An overhaul for the weather/environment. It feels refreshing to see new mechanics apart from the usual Neutron Star, Pulsar, and Black Hole passive effects. I like to build those kinds of start systems into "Fortress" systems that serve as chokepoints and blockade enemy fleets.
I'm glad they're adding new precursors, that at least makes this dlc more worth it. The storm mechanic feels like something that should be a core mechanic that the game is built around which makes me somewhat concerned. I really hope they're careful about the balancing. But at the very least, the new precursors are really promising
I never liked the old storm system, and how it is considered a mid game crisis, most of the time it's barely a blib in the gameplay and it rarely becomes useful in a war, at least to me, I like that they are giving it a new UI. I also like this new premise, have something like warpstorms or the Delfic expanse from ST:E, maybe it can make the galaxy less uniform, who knows. I just hope it isn't something the AI can spam to roadblock gameplay like Federations when you trying to go to war.
I think it has potential to be really fun; I hope there are slider options to control storm intensity and their spawn rate. I think that a massive, growing storm could make for a fun crisis, as well; one that couldn't be overcome with military might but instead required a combination of research, anomaly investigation, edicts, and other non-combat approaches to overcome.
The part I find interesting about stormchasers is that if its in your terriory you get bonuses. If it leaves your territory, its probably going to mess up your neighbors. So lets see if the bonuses outweigh the cons and if you can get consistent enough storms.
@@e-wall199 i like that idea, because normally it’s so rare that the shield matters. Adding more use cases would smooth that out and make it more worth building

I like anything that makes the galaxy seem more alive and feel like there is depth.
I'm with you here, it could potentially be cool, or very bad, it all depends on how they handle it, given how good the last DLC was I'm hoping they do well with it, IMO I already got my money's worth this year for the season pass. One thing I do hope is that it doesn't destroy the mod scene as bad as machine age, it took months for the big boys to really come back and a lot of what I consider core stuff is still not back.
I'd like one of them to spawn at the start of the game and ''move'' around the galaxy clockwise or such instead of being random. You could use it to your advantage when attacking. Maybe another one that spawns isn't moving randomly, but instead it moves in a straight line across the galaxy. Now you can prepare to use that to your advantage, or you can see it coming twoards you in a few years and prepare.
This could make very interesting strategic decisions. Does the enemy have a flank that is protected by an empire that has closed their borders to you? A Celestial Storm will open that path up for you. The Prikki-ti coming for your spinal fluid? Send your hull tanking fleet to meet them in a Pulsar contained within the anti-armor storm and watch as their defences are useless. Or watch as your alloy worlds face 200% increased upkeep, and the enemy comes knocking on your Matter Decompressor.
New space hazards/terrain/storms and storm events sound interesting. Maybe their could be unique space-borne aliens that live in certain areas as their preferred habitats. Or maybe some newly added space aliens could fill that role? Like Space Whales that feed on the energy of space storms? Or Giant Space octopi that cause space tempests when they enter a system? Like a roving Leviathan type of threat? Actually speaking of leviathans, it'd be cool to breed our own or to take over and use more of them. Like special projects where you cybernetically enhance or control these space beasts, like the Giant Space Amoeba you can get, could become something even better?

If the storms are slowly moving with relevant modifiers that make war attractive or not it could be interesting. Like the next 20 years a war thattaway is difficult. With knowing where they move helping you determine when a flank is weak or your defense in that corner strong. Certain starbase buildings that attract or repel would be great. Withaybe a megstructure actively giving control or guiding them
I think it can be beneficial for wars. Looking at some of the storms, one reduces shields by 70%. So, if you're facing a strong shield based enemy. attacking when this storm is present will give you the greatest chance for victory.
Stellaris has always had this split personaly of trying to offer a wonderous and terrifying galaxy where the empires have to do their best to overcome the obstacles and providing an even playing field to compete on. This seems to be addressed more to the former, but the question is how much will it be allowed to?
i love it, i realy hope one tech/effect will be that fleets will be harder to track by the enemy. so that the storm could be your Herald Of Doom for the enemy and/or allows / disallows some tech of ships to be used. imagen haveing no shields in storms but have your ship specificly armor tanked.
I have to say I agree with all your concerns, I haven't really played the game much lately, mostly been playing Elden Ring or UAD. Still, could be interesting and the new precursors are something to look forward to.
I wonder if a lot of the storms are going to be locked to certain systems? I could imagine that being a much more interesting and fun to interact with way to do it. For example, maybe like a nebula a few systems are in a stormy region of space and have periodic storms, but the storms don't roam beyond those areas under normal conditions. Storms are a funny thing in games, because I think they always sound very exciting and cool, but there are a lot of very unfun ways to do it. Here's hoping they get it right because they definitely look awesome!
For a long time in stelaris I've wanted more varied terrain. Mainly the idea that there could be stars systems that are inaccessible at the start of the game. They can act as both blockers to portion out sections of the galexy early on and also perhaps hide away later game content.
I kinda hope it's something you can adjust in the settings similar to gateway spawns and stuff So you can maybe have it appear like default at 1x, but you can make it 0x and turn it off, or bump it up to idk 25x for probably the most horrific galaxy the world has ever seen Because I think the whole space weather thing is really cool, but I would love to deal with it when I feel like dealing with it, similarly to L-Cluster. Another cool thing is, if I want to play more defensively without building a ton of navy, if we can just amass storm systems that are chokepoints, you could effectively deter your opponent from willing to fight you, maybe some sort of modifier that AIs are ofc, less willing to attack you if you are summoning storms in your empire There are potentially many cool things to be done, but I feel like it's best to be... well, as you said, cautiously optimistic Certainly at 13euro it can't really be worse than Astral Planes.
I hope they allow you to turn off Storms in the Galaxy creation menu. The randomness sounds like a terrible idea. Unless they add some sort of shield to protect a planet from random negative modifiers brought by random storms.
I picked this game up on steam sale recently. Still d'ing around with the base game, but I look forward to trying some DLC's once I get a lil $$$ (damn adult life/bills...)
I am definitely very interested to see how this storm overhaul is going to turn out. Cosmic storms have always felt like a severely underdeveloped game mechanic to me, and this at least seem like it will bring some more life to the galaxy map. However, this could also backfire horribly if they are too random or you can't properly deal with them.
I'd argue RNG is less an issue here. I could deal with the RNG of the current storm system, if I had better tools for dealing with them, which makes the randomness not fun to deal with. So I'm mixed on this. Either this is going to be neat because they'll give us tools to be better able to play around the RNG factor and it'll ensure that space weather's RNG will be something that negates how much power the meta has because it forces players to adapt to changing situations in game. On the other hand, it could be awful if we are still in a position where our tools for dealing with space weather are rubbish or nonexistent, where it just means the RNG screws you over as a result of not being able to adapt to make the most out of it, while being able to better deal with the negatives.
Considering Stellaris already has horrendous late game performance, I'm worried this will just make it even worse. On top of making it more random, which is never good. Might buy it in 5 years when it's on 90% discount or something.
Honestly having more interesting phenomena "terrain" would be nice as lets be honest choosing right engagement system is closest we've ever got to any forms of tactics. Storms would be fine if the effect don't last forever and wasn't bloody boring but having smaller more intensive effects could be fun. And tehre is a lot of other things you can do, maybe events that after the storm spawns some unique but limited resource that unlock some powerful building or edict but because it disappears it makes areas it spawns into highly desirable, maybe "high tectonics" areas doing something similar. Tech that allows you to cause articial one, tech that may allow you to predict them in advance so you can prepare or maybe manipulate where they spawn? I mean there's a lot. But even the thing I've mention about creating the contested areas relies on my permanent gripe which is AI an general and DIPLOMACY in particular. Diplomacy to me is the weakest area of the game and the DIplomacy DLC was probably highest disappointment because it barely added any.
I don't care too much for this personally. I think it will be good but i'm more excited for the dlc after this one if i'm honest. If we go by the season pass. I both hope and think storms wont be as random anymore though.
I am hoping for a megastructure (that the ai doesn't build) that lets you create storms and send them at your enemies, in exchange for horrible relations and a cb.
I like the fact that the storms are random. If there were only a few set ways and times the storms traveled it would become (IMO) just something players can make a 100% success counter to it woukd quickly become boring. Kinda like most CK3 events.
I wonder if this dlc might correlate or be a slight reference to the Stormlight Archives book series, since the latest book in that series is coming out later this year. Seeing some of those origins makes me think maybe they were inspired in some way. I do kinda hope there’s at least an event reference to Roshar or something like that
I just ignored all the existing weather stuff so if this makes it more important and impactful, that's a good thing, however, this update seems underwhelming if that's all it's doing.
So far I've been pretty let down by the mechanics. Kinda my fault for hyping myself up, but still. Like Espionage? I was really hoping for something deeper and with more going on to it. Or the criminal megacorps. Being able to have a massive spy network and use that subterfuge to wreak havoc in my neighbors to compensate for having a smaller fleet. Establish hidden branch offices. Cripple fleets and defenses for an attack. Stage a coup. Stoke unrest in big empires to break them up. But no, it's basically just a way to get intel and steal some artifacts or tech. Almost entirely useless. The rifts are neat but don't really feel like they matter. YOU have to initiate them, they don't matter otherwise and it feels like a shame. Storms have a lot of potential to keep the mid to late game interesting when you end up in the kind of settled border phase. I hope there's more interaction with them, like generating and directing storms, amplifying them, and the opposite where you can build countermeasures. Still hoping for a Civ style religion system so I can have the same fun with those mechanics. Spreading culture, spying, stea- I mean acquiring relics, trade route management internal and external, diplomacy, and spamming missionaries were my favorite way to play Civ and I've been chasing that kind of indirect playstyle in Stellaris for a while.
Yay a new dlc that adds more randomness to the game that doesnt actually fit with a strategy game and will mess up the mods i like to play with. I have all the dlc and like to play the most upto date build but I will be turning off auto update and see how this plays out. The only good thing I heard was the 2 new precursors , hopefully they are actually decent and rival the Cybrex for usefulness.
i swear if we dont get a structure that can for example, cuase a black hole storm in enemy territory or something similar. missed potential, massive missed potential.
I've loved this game since its beta way back, making me feel old now. But if this dlc doesn't add anything substantial, it's a waste of money. Weather was never a fun mechanic, mainly because you never notice it impact anything... except for a certain end game crisis. While adding flavor to the weather is nice and seeing them move will be leasing to the eye. I doubt it's going to make any meaningful impact to gameplay. My personal opinion.

a real storm in a teacup this update will be
I hate this, why am I even allowed to have a keyboard.
I am once again asking for player bio ships.
Cosmic storm hell I be surprised if they put warp storm
Interesting but also wait and see mode.
I don’t mind this. Not every expansion needs to be massive or add a ton.
I feel like this dlc needs more pizzazz. Like maybe add new planetry types, even a new galactic threat?
Yay a new dlc that adds more randomness to the game that doesnt actually fit with a strategy game and will mess up the mods i like to play with.
I have all the dlc and like to play the most upto date build but I will be turning off auto update and see how this plays out. The only good thing I heard was the 2 new precursors , hopefully they are actually decent and rival the Cybrex for usefulness.
I hope they got better audio for the storms than what they have now. That space weather audio get's real annoying, real fast.
A whole DLC about space weather? They're really scraping the bottom of the rain water barrel.
You know, it's very tempting to do a Family Guy reference right now.
i swear if we dont get a structure that can for example, cuase a black hole storm in enemy territory or something similar. missed potential, massive missed potential.
Alloys plus 40 percent, god dam
I've loved this game since its beta way back, making me feel old now. But if this dlc doesn't add anything substantial, it's a waste of money. Weather was never a fun mechanic, mainly because you never notice it impact anything... except for a certain end game crisis.
While adding flavor to the weather is nice and seeing them move will be leasing to the eye. I doubt it's going to make any meaningful impact to gameplay. My personal opinion.
it will be nice to see when it comes out for me in 2 to 4 years give or take
Man at this rate I'll have a PC with Stellaris and all the DLC before the next console update comes 😂😅😭
Galactic terrain is what we need. The galaxy feels too same ish
dance with angels, anyone?
Christ that was fast
I feel like I can hear the pain in his voice lmao
If they gonna nuke my shields even more, I'm modding the game to remove them all ought right.
Unless we get shroud storms to cut off systems for a period of time I can’t be bothered
Any news on that ground combat rework paradox? Lmao, this seems like such a random add on
