Adding my thanks since I just started considering DLC for this game. The time stamps are **much** appreciated as I develop my list of must buys from the video.
Yes he is, but when a creator is sponsored by the company itself atleast i become sceptical wether their positive opinions on a piece of content is actually theirs or if its the one deemed most apropriate and profitable by a group of PR consults at Paradox. I love Paradox with all my heart but theyre still a company that wants to turn a profit
Have had Stellaris in my library for over a year now and felt like it was truly daunting until coming across your videos yesterday. Returning to the game a few hours later fully understanding how to play and finding the ability to keep my save going on without getting confused was an awesome feeling! The next day I go to look up DLC and here you are posting 6 hours prior about it. Thanks for all the useful info!
Same, it's a bit intimidating when first trying to play and I barely touched it then saw his videos on the steam page and followed to here. Now I've put in 40 hours and counting this week. Also the choice of music in this was nice, really like the Star Trek Online music when talking about federations and the choice for the Toxoid pack xD
I'm in a similar boat. I'm very interested in Victoria 3, but wanted to challenge myself to learn a paradox game before dropping money on it. I got Stellaris a few years ago and quit after a few hours cus I couldn't get it. But now I've already put 30 hours into it and absolutely loving it lol. I may not need Victoria for a long time
I ran into your tutorial series after having purchased Stellaris back in 2017 and always feeling overwhelmed whenever I tried to get into it. Your series has helped me to fall in love with the game (although I'm still not very good yet, I still have a lot of learning to do!) and my playtime on this has skyrocketed. Now all I need to do is find some other people to play with and get a hold of balancing my priorities while playing!
Max, just finished your tutorials and I feel like I have 500 hours playtime at 50. Not intimidated, cool under pressure, and I attribute that to your logical reasoning you present in your tutorials. You are simply brilliant at tutorial videos and GREATLY increased my access to this game. I’m very busy and have to game where I can and you helped me get SO MUCH enjoyment out of my gameplay. Avid fan right here. Thank you to the moon [s].
Have this game since quite a time. Used to play EU4 a lot but never got into stellaris. Now after watching your videos I am burning to play it!! Thanks a lot!!! Greetings from Vienna, Austria
I picked up playing this game just because I watched your tutorials. It was daunting at first, but now I'm used to the mechanics of the game. Thanks a lot
I remember when all the Stellaris DLC’s were only 99 cents and the most expensive one was 4.99. I cry now thinking about how I could have bought all of them for under $15 I bought the base game itself for $ 9.99😭
@@swjdnansjdjs4224 because the popularity of Stellaris started to go up after a few well know live streamers started to play it. After that. The base game went from $19.99 when it wasn’t on sale to $60 usd. I happened to get it for about on sale for $10. Before the game devs were basically giving the game away. Now they’re charging an arm and a leg for a game that doesn’t even run well during the late game even on stronger PC’s
I uninstalled Stellaris several years ago because I couldn’t wrap my head around the mechanics. Then I came across your channel. I would love to see you make a series playing in various styles such as a hive or synthesis life form. But with a tutorial slant. Thanks for making this game interesting again
I love your channel, lots of people have already said this but I truly believe you have a gift with teaching. I learn so much from your videos, they provide so much value. I hope lots of people learn from you as you continue!
Mostly agree with everything here, but ranking Nemesis so high is strange to me. It just adds 3 different playstyles basically. I agree Espionage can be really useful (i personally try to use it alot and only play single player) but it mostly isnt impactful enough to warrant doing the operations. Its not a bad DLC but I think there is alot of foundational stuff like Federations, Distant Stars, Overlord, Relics, Leviathans that one should get first. Unless you really want to be the crisis or the star wars empire ofc. Thats hella fun Also very glad to see you give so much love to Synthetic Dawn. Everyone seems to always go "oh its just hive mind with minor changes" and im sick of this slander!
i just got stellaris on sale to try it, i spend all night playing the base game and you helped a lot choosing which dlcs i wanted right now thank you human being
I would find it really good if Paradox inserts a system like HoI4. That you either buy the DLCs or you pay monthly for as long as you want. That would generally upgrade it especially for the people who play 1-2 months and then take a break. They would only have to buy the subscription if they want to have DLCs and not spend 100-200€.
Thank you so much for all of these videos! They're super well put together and extremely helpful for someone who's never played the game before. I picked up Stellaris in the last Steam sale and this playlist got me legitimately excited to try it out
This is all on special for Steam Spring Sale, the difference between the main game and all gameplay DLC is like $150 so this is very useful info right now.
Max, excellent series! I just started playing on the console (Xbox) port. Learned that I was doing about 100 different things wrong. Like building out districts and building before I had pop to work them. Could not figure out why some planets had negative resources. I was also using starbases all wrong and building max defense platforms at every outpost.
really well explained, helpful video for deciding which dlc makes sense for me. (Im German and I think this video is better than any I've found in my language)
Really enjoyed the video!! I just finished the beginner’s guide to stellaris you made and loved it. Would you ever consider doing something with stellaris on the Xbox or PS? I recently got the game for Xbox and would love to watch something about it on your channel. Always a joy to see another video from you.
Honestly, Stellaris and the DLCs goes on sale a LOT and the sales are genuinely good too.. 25 - 75% depending on what event is going on. I'm waiting for the Autumn/Halloween sales to pop up for the last couple DLCs I need because Stellaris will probably go on sale again. One just finished though so maybe it won't be till Christmas now but still, it's honestly worth waiting for sales tbh because there's enough in the game to keep you going until the next sale since they happen every couple of months anyway!
Any idea when they were last on sale and when the next one might be? Bought the base game and w.e the upgrade pack was that came with it for dirty cheap a few years ago, but have yet to play it lol. Decided to actually get into the game but feel missing the DLC might make or break it for me.
Thanks for the indepth information! I've just started playing Stellaris and it's super interesting. I saw they have so much DLC, but there's so much I just can't afford spending $200 on DLC. It's really helpful to see stuff like this that really breaks down what's good and why. Great video!
Thanks a billion times for recommending Humble Store! Half price is really nice and I wouldn't have bought any dlcs in the near future for full price. Didn't find a field to put your code in tho :'
Just watched your Steam Winter sale video, and Stellaris was a game I have always looked at, but was not sure to get it or not, esp with the amount of DLC. So I watched this video and niticed that all appart from 1 was in the Stellaris: Ultimate Bundle, and on steam it was at 56% off, so I got it.
Hey Max, I don't know if you made a video about this already or not, but how would you rate/classify the last two DLCs (First Contact & Galactic Paragons)?
8:09 Montu has done testing with the Espionage system, and he concluded that you can NEVER break apart a Federation with the Smear Campaigns, and breaking a Defensive Pact is basically not worth it considering the time and resources it takes. I imagine it _could_ work in an edge case where a Federation exists that happens to have members with opposing ethics, but again it'd take more time than it would to just build a stronger fleet, or maybe even a stronger alliance
@@MihaelGeng You're welcome, though there has been an update. Honestly, there are only 2 uses I get out of Nemesis almost every playthrough: Galactic Emperor, and the Consume Star operation. Becoming the Crisis is fun, but it's only something you'll do a couple of playthroughs, because once you Become the Crisis, everyone hates you forever and you're basically diplo-locked out of the game, so really most of the time you'll eventually go on to either become the Custodian or the Emperor, though technically the Custodian is stronger because you can have the GDF annnd your Federation Fleet, so that's 2 free 800 cap fleets as opposed to just 1, but either/or. If you have Apocalypse as well, and you manage to kill a Stellar Devourer, and you choose Retrieve the Egg Sac, you can do the Consume Star operation, which kills all the planets/habitats in someone else's capital system. It's a very cool operation that speaks for itself, but eventually they will nullify it after the 1st or 2nd operation. Wait for it to go on sale.
I would label Utopia as a must have. Apocalypse, Megacorp, Overlord, Federations and Galactic Paragons are the core of the game. Ultimately, most of the DLC is worth the price if they’re on sale. I don’t own First Contact because cloaking is a garbage system and I don’t want to deal with it.
You know, I've been a massive strategy fan all my life, somehow this title slipped my radar, but with blackfriday sales, I think I'm gonna jump in, good place to find a starting point.
Great analysis! Question: I consider myself a relative beginner but over time have purchased most of the DLC thanks to steam sales. Any DLC that’s best not to load when I play based on my relative inexperience?
Maybe that helps: I was in the same position and did a vanilla run first, then added one or two DLC at a time with every new playthrough - to keep things fresh and get used to mechanics before I add new ones. You can check out my comment from a few days ago at the FAQ video here on his channel. Let me know what you think, cheers
20:12 well if you say so. serve them by capture them into a capsule and making them a power generator. lol atleast they have a peaceful life in the matrix i guess.
This is the 3rd dlc tier vid I've watched before buying and the 1st that actually explained gameplay, ty. Also the others were really multiplayer biased and kinda talk you out of the single player dlcs. Of course overlord sounds like they just fixed a function bug of ai not participating in vassalage and they sold a patch as a dlc...it is what it is 😂
I think the early game complexity and this DLC sprawl and cost of entry is what hurts the game the most. Right now it still costs $57 for a 7 yr old game and $367 ($330 with the massive 10% discount!) to get the entire ultimate bundle. I feel like it should be a $20-30 base game at this point (if not F2P!) and less than $100 for the entire bundle. If anything, they should be rolling all of the older DLC into the base game every couple years, as there are some fundamental features in early DLC you just wouldn't want to play the game without any longer imo.
they were and are doing exactly that. The content of many of the dlcs changed quite a lot over the years. I believe Ascension Perks used to be a dlc-only feature for example. But I doubt they will make entire dlcs completely free, that would be a slap in the face for all the previous customers
how do expansions work in this game? Do they all add stuff at once, or you choose which one to play and are mutually exclusive? I only played base game years ago, thinking of buying it on steam now
I am a beginner in the game, I just started playing it, which of the dlcs or updates do you recommend to start with because I see that there are many of them
I like Stellaris. A lot. Nothing else quite like it...some similar space grand strategies...but it kind of has a niche all it's on. And while I grab the DLC when I find the right sell... Full price, all the DLC has always been a jip. If you consider all the DLC's at full price and see the differences they make in the game..oh the differences are there. But are there 100$+ worth of new additions that even comes close to justifying. I get that this isn't the best selling genre and the money to make the games we love has to come from somewhere. And I also realize that some of the most guilty parties are AAA developers. But what I would love to see a top developer make a game like this where they actually have the budget to do it right from the start instead of depending on lacklaster DLC's for them to turn a prophet. It's been 8 years+. Instead of Stellaris 2 we get Cosmic storms for 12.99. Which literally adds.... cosmic storms occasionally. Ya'll know what I'm talking about. I LOVE stellaris. I just want to get beat to death with hundreds of dollars into DLC to add basic features that we know didn't take an insane level of production in order to impliment. This company is not unique in this business struture nor or they the worst. I just want a game to be what it should be and what it's capable of being. I'm tired of buying games on the hope that 5 years down the line and 150$ more that it'll finally be the fleshed out game it shuld have always been. When I buy a 20$ DLC I want $20 dollars worth of value. When I spent 100-200$ worth of DLC I want it to transcend what the game originally was and to be blown away. Some people are ok with spending hundreds on fortnite skins. I am not. here's to hope for the future! Stellaris on!
Good question...I recently purchased a few DLC's and now my game crashes.....all the time and never did before. Cant figure out which one is causing so I can uninstall it.
Tried playing multiple times but it was just too much or too hard but got stoned the other night and now I actually have an economy but I’m still struggling a bit with managing the planet mostly the locked blocks should I clear them all out with the city blocks or ya idk shit like that no pain no gain
Buy a few at a time, CD keys at a fraction of the price. Otherwise you end up starting multiple campaigns (most still work on saves but I find its best to start a new game to get the full benefits of the dlc) in order to experience each new dlc you buy. Or you end up half way through a campaign and realise that features of a particular dlc would have been really useful or fun to have in that campaign.
Some of the DLCs completly destroyed my favourite playstyle as aggressive "evil" conquerors. Federations and alliances everywhere so I can't do anything.
I downloaded Stellaris on steam and all DLC but the paradox luancher won't recognise where stellaris was installed. Do I ignore the launcher app and use Steam or can I fix this?
I just got the base game recently and it has a galactic council for voting on policies too, was this suppose to be only in federation pack? But they added to the base game for free?
Is it my ears getting a little old, or do you often slip into calling the game 'Solaris' instead of 'Stellaris'? I keep expecting George Clooney to walk across the room in the background! ;-) And yes, an updated comment about recent DLC releases would be much appreciated, especially as you promised it. 🙂
the way there sold dlc and expansion feels worse than destiny love the game so far but the dlc are very poorly grouped like why not put game changing stuff in a bundle then empire in another but they wanna be greedy and give trash with major dlc so you gotta go buy it separately or in a expensive bundle to feel like your getting more like who wants plant and rock ppl with a major dlc when another major dlc can be there playing it with no dlc felt like stuff was missing the game got boring without the actual content selling the game with the dlc would have been smarter then ppl can buy the races and other small stuff
Missing from this DLC list are: First Contact, Galactic Paragons, Astral Planes, Machine Age, Cosmic Storms I bought Stellaris on steam sale this summer but had exams close after so wasnt able to tryout the game. Only now do I have the time to take a look at it for the first time. Got 2 DLCs for pretty much free: Utopia and Galactic Paragons. Not sure if those are good, one is late game - which as a Newbie I will have to reach first - the other one isnt listed here :|
Why are you afraid to flat-out say something is bad? You don't need to sugarcoat every point of criticism with a positive spin because it really detracts from the integrity of the video. Also, for Apocalypse you said, "I just don't think it's the greatest DLC of all time" instead of saying it's passable or ranking it. The issue is that by using that metric, none of the DLCs qualify, and that statement does not set the relative rank of that DLC over other alternatives. It just says it isn't the greatest, which none of them are. But this might just be hype-building, full-positivity ad shilling of a promo video.
Save your money, the game is crap. They turned into a board game... where space has choke points. The stupidest feature in any game, and even worse in a space game that expands a galaxy.

How have you found it?
Should I get Stellaris: Galactic Paragons??
the amount of dlc is TOO DAMN HIGH 🤣 Great breakdown though! ❤
Awesome review of the DLC, thank you! I don't know much about megacorps, is that worth doing a video on?
I'm waiting for it all to go back on sale before I pick them all up.
I got the starter pack on Steam on Sale reecently for $40. Pretty dang good deal I'd say.
Your the main reason I am playing this game your awesome very knowledgeable and very easy to understand!
This is the 3rd dlc tier vid I've watched before buying and the 1st that actually explained gameplay, ty.
Also the others were really multiplayer biased and kinda talk you out of the single player dlcs. Of course overlord sounds like they just fixed a function bug of ai not participating in vassalage and they sold a patch as a dlc...it is what it is 😂
that audio quality !! thanx i needed this video.
I just got the game and these videos have been so helpful to get into it and learn the mechanics and play styles. Thanks so much.

Nice overview, thanks Max!
STELLARIS ALL DLC UNLOCK VIDEO: ua-cam.com/video/IQ1Csuo93RY/v-deo.html
Thanks for the breakdown!
Great video! 👍🏻 Thank you for sharing your recommendations! 🙂
Great categorization!
how do expansions work in this game? Do they all add stuff at once, or you choose which one to play and are mutually exclusive? I only played base game years ago, thinking of buying it on steam now
For me Apocalypse is must have for every xenophobe.
The Megalophile in me wants to build all the Mega structures, and the sadist in me wants to blow up celestial bodies
For the federation mod can you play the origins if you are in a multi-player session?
Just getting into the game is it worth buying all the DLC’
Do you know if Xbox has a bundle for it?
Good question...I recently purchased a few DLC's and now my game crashes.....all the time and never did before. Cant figure out which one is causing so I can uninstall it.
Excellent! Thank you.
Yet again - Thank you!
Great vid, helped a lot
Weird question... why do you have headphones on for a video like this? Good video BTW.
Sorry, what are CD keys?
Some of the DLCs completly destroyed my favourite playstyle as aggressive "evil" conquerors. Federations and alliances everywhere so I can't do anything.
This is great advice. Any update for Stellaris: First Contact. And I noticed you have not made content in a year ... are you still alive?
I downloaded Stellaris on steam and all DLC but the paradox luancher won't recognise where stellaris was installed. Do I ignore the launcher app and use Steam or can I fix this?
Thank you a lot!
A "benevolent megacorporation" sounds like the definition of an oxymoron.
great video. suggestion: please add chapter markers next time

I need a game just like sins of a solar empire
I just got the base game recently and it has a galactic council for voting on policies too, was this suppose to be only in federation pack? But they added to the base game for free?
It's always there, Feds just expand it a tiny bit
One question I a noob and a new dlc coming out witch best dlc to start like fresh start
YARR HARR ME MATEYS, I BE HAVING NONE OF THESE PROBLEMS FOR I DOWNLOADED ME CAR!
Ok, i'm buying this shit, wish me luck
We need a 40K Expansion
11:33 utopia
12:52 apocalypse
17:36 leviathans
18:58 Synthetic dawn
А что не спиратить? Даже если есть лицензия. На нее тоже можно накатить длс
Thx.
Wich Stellaris DLC to buy first?
Me: Yes
If you buy one you will buy all
Is it my ears getting a little old, or do you often slip into calling the game 'Solaris' instead of 'Stellaris'? I keep expecting George Clooney to walk across the room in the background! ;-)
And yes, an updated comment about recent DLC releases would be much appreciated, especially as you promised it. 🙂
STELLARIS ALL DLC UNLOCK VIDEO: ua-cam.com/video/IQ1Csuo93RY/v-deo.html
the way there sold dlc and expansion feels worse than destiny love the game so far but the dlc are very poorly grouped like why not put game changing stuff in a bundle then empire in another but they wanna be greedy and give trash with major dlc so you gotta go buy it separately or in a expensive bundle to feel like your getting more like who wants plant and rock ppl with a major dlc when another major dlc can be there playing it with no dlc felt like stuff was missing the game got boring without the actual content selling the game with the dlc would have been smarter then ppl can buy the races and other small stuff
Steam sale right now
Missing from this DLC list are:
First Contact, Galactic Paragons, Astral Planes, Machine Age, Cosmic Storms
I bought Stellaris on steam sale this summer but had exams close after so wasnt able to tryout the game.
I hate when games like this make a bunch of dlcs for you to buy, like why not just update the game it's like the sims 4 or arma 3
Ghey….
Yes, lithoids. Gorignak.
Pro Tip : while some Paradox Dlc is great, none of it is worth the full price they ask for
Save your money, the game is crap. They turned into a board game... where space has choke points. The stupidest feature in any game, and even worse in a space game that expands a galaxy.
federations are terrible, i had to disable the whole dlc because my small 6 faction games just end up as one federation at peace all the time. boring
I just pirated it
