OBT is definitely one of my favorites! I think keeping them semi arboreal with a good chunk of substrate and they're very laid back. I have 2 that are sweet hearts but I can see why some people have issues

They're a pretty cool species, but I could never have more than one. One of the cheapest Ts out there and not particularly outstanding except for their large size
My 2 H Macs and my 2 OBTs are some of my favourites in my collection. My OBTs have made different, unique webbing every time I've rehoused them and I see them often if not out in the open, then peeking out from their hides. My H Macs are a little more reclusive but they grew fast and are impressive whenever they come out, and that colouration is beautiful.
This makes me sad! A T vagans was my first T and now I have 14. Still going strong too! She is pretty sassy but I have a soft spot in my heart for her ❤️🕷️
I love my OBT so much. Had it since a little spiderling and such an interesting spider. I love how they are semi arboreal and web up loads. Mine is always out and about and has never threat posed. I was so nervous rehousing, but shouldn't have worried as it slow walked into its new home with no bother. Maybe it senses its my favourite and is just a happy spood 😊
I guess when i came into the hobby i thought that these characteristics define some species like the OBT. And now that i was fortunate enough to acquire 3 spiders with more to come, I have already learned that every spider can be different. The Murinus was supposed to be this menace and mine is actually pretty calm most of the time, as soon as I open the enclosure, she goes to hide. Not even once did she try to defend herself and her takedowns are mostly uneventful. Meanwhile my Brachypelma Hamorii takes several roaches at once, randomly jumps on the tongs and catches pray mid air, rolling around with it
Lolz, the orange baboon was like my 4th T. They are fiesty, fasty and bitey!! But, they are also prolific webbers, and it's a great show to see. The metallic blue toes are nice too!! Fun to feed too! Great video, I like these!!
I loved my starburst baboon! She was scary, but I was cautious and responsible and never got bit. I kept her in a tall, glass tube vivarium and never had a problem not being able to view her.
I have an OBT and I am most cautious with this one out of my 8 solely because of her speed and her defensiveness, but she hides most the time but when she does grace us with her presence it’s always so mesmerizing and she grows more beautiful
im shocked to know both h. maculata and p. murinus are in top 5, theyre both one of my favorites! ive had a p.murinus before but sold due to moving countries, i loved how it webbed out the whole enclosure than just have a boring plain tarantula on a cocopeat substrate.
My Black Velvet Was one of the most agressive T's ever, that thing would jump at you before you could even put food in the tank. And the fangs on her were massive
Love how the H mac is the photo i saw and its one of my top 3 favorites lol. Humans as a species are always looking for that instant gratification. Me personally.. i think their reclusiveness is awesome because it makes the sightings just THAT much more awesome. Lmao!! Made it to the end of the video. P murinus is my favorite T.
While I understand why it made the list, I was still saddened to see the A. Hentzi there. I have a 13-year-old son and a 9-year-old daughter that are both heavily involved in sports. I can't tell you how many kids over the years I have turned into huge tarantula fans because of my A. Hentzi, Molly. She is by far and away the sweetest and most docile tarantula I own, and I feel is a great ambassador to this hobby.
Poor hentzi….so under appreciated. I live in AR and do see them quite often, but I love them. They’re so chill and I’ve picked up several of them with no problems at all.
Shocked by the texas brown being on here!!! I only have one tarantula, and that's what I got! He's actually quite defensive for a texas brown but I think their earthy colours are really lovely, and in my experience they like to be out in the open for the most part so you get to enjoy their company.
I love my Trinidad Chevron named "Face hugger". Scares the hell out of me but not boring despite being a brown tarantula. Keeps me on my toes at feeding time!
I bought an obt when I was young in the hobby on looks alone knowing nothing about it. First night it got out while I was trying to show it off to some friends at a party I had at my house. I was able to catch it and get it back in it enclosure then immediately did some research. Listed as extremely fast, quick to bite, and usually wet bites. I can tell you from first hand experience it absolutely bites multiple times and as a first form of defense. That being said like mentioned in this video it was a very easy spider to have and care for just a but of an anxiety attack to re house and clean the cage. I would and likely will add one to my collection in the future once I get the wife to chill about the three spiders I currently have lol
Interesting poll. I can understand the pet holes, H. maculata and A. hentzi but the vagans and murinus were always good in my experience. Never had aggression from vagans and I think OBT has been given an undeserved bad reputation. They're much easier to deal with than Psalmopoeus which are just pure evil.
I am not sure, I'd call Psalmopoeus evil, but, yes, they are rather fast. One of my friends had a P. cambridgei, and it really had the nasties table manners.😂😖
Im in a fb group and someone purchased jumper from a breeder, it disappeard for week or so for (seemingly) molting and out came an OBT sling. I do love the irony of buying a jumper, a docile, chill friendly spider for one of gods little tests by accident (edit- obt killed the jumper)
When I saw the title to this video, my first pick, immediately that popped into my head was the OBT. It's a love/hate relationship. I have a dozen slings and they are the most difficult I found to raise. Feeding time is a challenge to not have them run out of the little deli cup they are housed in the minute you open to drop food in. I do have a method that works for me. I do all maintenance over a huge pot and when they escape they drop into the large pot, with several catch cups, paint brushes and tongs I can successfully get them safely back inside but feeding time is not a quick choir without its challenges. Given that, I still absolutely love them. I refer to them as my trouble childs!
Obt, h. Gigas, and ESPECIALLY h. Mac are among some I really like. I'm not super into NW Terrestrials but I love my Chalcodes for letting new people interested in ts to hold, I also have a sling I got as a freebie early 2018, and it's finally hit 2 inches. I'm only keeping it now because I want to say I spent the time raising one🤣🤣.
My first T was actually an OBT. He was loaned out for breeding but the second pairing went wrong and he got eaten. He was a very sweet T, never threw up a defense pose or anything. Hell, he was even easy to handle whenever I needed to check on his body condition more extensively. I think OBTs get a bad rep because of their speed and defensiveness. They are awesome and I plan to keep them more often. I have three already with two of them being the Kigamo color form.
In my experience, males of all species are in general more docile than females. So you may be surprised when you get a female and it's being nasty hahaha. But the character is not the species, I find them vary alot between specimen.
My OBT was a freebie included among the very first tarantulas I ever bought, and I was very nervous about it, but honestly Cheeto is super chill. I give them oversized enclosures so they have plenty of space and a few things to web up and they've never given me a single problem in rehousing. Definitely not as chill as my avic, who got her first enclosure shattered in the middle of the night by a cat and didn't throw up a single threat pose, or my t albo, who is basically a teddy bear. But i love seeing their furry little orange feet outside the burrow when they're hungry
Oh my!!! I have 4 of the 5! I adore them all. OBTs are my favorite, so much so, I have multiples. Louie said to me, when I started because I was leery about them, she said if I could respect them then I could respect any and that stuck with me. Mine do hide but when I’m working at my desk, they come out and watch me. I love it! And the Cameroon red baboons are great too! I got a communal set of 3 from Brian and Louie, love watching them create their tunnels!
Obviously everyone has different experiences, but I like my H gigas quite a bit. It’s far from grown but it’s one of the fastest growing species from what I’ve heard. Mine is a small juvenile. It’s skittish but it’s never let that stop it from taking down a cricket barely smaller than it. It’s definitely a very plain species, but mine is way more visible than I expected. It spends much of its time with its front half outside of its burrow waiting for food. I also got it as a freebie so that makes it even better lol. I don’t think I’d ever recommend it to someone who only wants one or two species, but it’s a good addition to any collection in my opinion
My dad owns an orange baboon. We rarely see it, it’s always hiding under a piece of cork bark. I’ve only seen it out in the open once, when we were re-homing it. I got to hold it but it bolted so fast😂. It’s so cool looking but can be very defensive so it’s definitely a spider for people who are a little bit experienced.
I love the fact that there are so many species so that everyone can satisfy his own taste. I love P. muticus instead ahaha, that red-brick colour is so unique and in Europe are always sold out after 2 minutes. Gonna get one in November (female) I hope.
I had a Togo as a freebie. It is the only spider that has genuinely frightened me. Granted I have yet to own a cobalt. I thought I had seen fast from my ornamentals, but somehow, this was double the speed. I caught it.... barely. Beautiful for its short life. Was a male.
My OBT was such a great tarantula. It was always out and pretty friendly if not a little shy. An unfortunate molting led to a premature death sadly. Hope to get another in the future.
King Baboons are gorgeous, even if they are pet holes. My OBT was my favorite T that I ever had, and probably b/c it acted like I expected all tarantulas to, before I started keeping them.
OK it's settled. I either want the Texas brown, or a fire leg for my first T. But that Texas brown was actually super adorable. Almost as cute as my scolopendra mutilans. Almost.
I had a red rump years ago. She was very docile and easy to handle. Had a orange baboob too. I gave it shallow bedding with a half log so I could see her more often. Mean as hell though. Lol

I live in Australia, so we only have Old World Tarantulas here & I find them terrifying. I keep Hunstmans, Wolf Spiders & Jumping Spiders. We can’t import here so only have access to local species…
I have a question that I cant seem to find on google, and that is; why are old world tarantulas more aggressive and more potent than new world tarantulas?
It has to do with evolution. When the continents drifted apart they set off on two different evolutionary paths. New World Tarantulas rely on their urticating hairs for self defense and it was effective enough that they didn't need to evolve more powerful venom. Old World Tarantulas lack the urticating hairs, instead of evolving that defense mechanism, their environment must have found a more potent venom a much more effective method of defense. It could also bc because the old world prey wasn't as susceptible to a weaker venom so they needed to evolve a more potent venom to subdue their prey to survive.
I have been quite amazed to see the Hysterocrates gigas there, mine in particular has never put herself in a defensive position, she only hides when I inadvertently produce movement in his terrarium, but she is always outside and can be seen perfectly
I had some upside down catfish in my aquarium that hid whenever the light was on. It's frustrating to tell people how cool they care, if they could only see 'em.
I live in SW Kansas, and the Texas Brown is all over down here. I had a little female make a burrow in my backyard, and she had an egg sac, and I would very carefully go near her burrow opening and would see her quite frequently. Until this past Sunday when we had a particularly nasty storm come out of the east, and it dumped so much rain in a very short amount of time that my backyard flooded badly, and her burrow was completely covered in water at least by three inches. The water did not go into the ground like normal, and I saw her one time after the storm went through and she was at the opening and I could just see her through the water, and I haven’t seen her since. There is none of her webbing across the opening, and I don’t think she survived. Either that or she was able to get out and to ground with no water, but I have my doubts. 😢😢😢 But on the bright side, the rain we have been getting is helping with the worst drought level we have been in for almost a year. Maybe I’ll be able to see some males migrating this fall looking for girls. I don’t like spiders but I was attached to this little girl. 😢😢
Awh I like Hentzi’s! I remember going to see the big “parade” of them migrating through the Midwest in search of mates when I was younger! Thousands of em!
Me: recently splurged and got some more "advanced" old worlds for the first time. Also me: realizes 2 of them are on this video. The OBT and H maculata. I got the dcf Kenya variant of the nippy boi and hoping to give it plenty of opportunity to hide/ have space so any close encounters are limited/avoided. H maculata just looks incredible and Ive found i enjoy the more reclusive ones as its so rewarding to catch em out. (Im also getting a chilobrachys electric blue) That being said i have zero experience with spiders of this speed. My fastest before this is my GBB and i know comparing them to an OBT is like rabbits vs tortoises. But thanks to channels like yours im ready to tackle on these more challenging but rewarding species to keep!
I love my OBT lol. Mine is out all the time and tends to run away instead of threat pose. I know that this isn't everyone's experience but mine is great. Super easy to care for as well.
I love a hentzis, I know collecting species with unique patterns and colors can be cool but I get attached to mine for their unique personalities, theyre all special and all deserve the love!!
I don't know if I have any that I "hate" but the slow growers and pet holes are just what they are. Understanding the T before you buy makes a big difference in the experience.
Love my OBT. Got him as one of my first 10 tarantulas and he’s probably one of my chillest ones. My tip to owning an OBT, get them as young as you can. Maybe not a sling but a juvenile that hasn’t matured yet would be best. Your confidence will grow along with your tarantula. Before you know it, you’re completely comfortable with a matured fully grown OBT and you can then start exploring the amazing world of Old World tarantulas.
WHAT!!! The Heteroscodra Maculata is my second favorite tarantula of all time. I have one now and it is definitely very reclusive, but I see it at least once each day on the cork bark. It's also defensively bitten and slapped at its food, but I still love my little Tetra.
I have a King Baboon. Sometimes I think it's dead until a rehouse lol Never had a threat posture or anything, just never see it out as it's always burrowed. But a beautiful spider.
I used to have an Usambara Baboon tarantula which looked exactly like that last Orange one. Was told the venom was VERY potent so I never free handled that one. It was also VERY aggressive and fast. I fed it crickets and baby mice. Ultimately ended up selling her. She did hide in her burrow much of the time.
We have a bucket beneath our AC in the back yard to catch condensation water and use for plants. We found one of those first one's floating in there which was the first live tarantula I have ever seen in the 30 yrs I've lived in california. It was barely moving but it WAS moving so I dumped the bucket over our fence and looked 20 mins later and it was gone. I hope it got some heat then took off bc it was close to dying from drowning and temperature I'd bet. That water was almost ice cold.
I've had 2 OBT's and yeah they can be intimidating, but they are super cool and I loved the way the webbed up their enclosures. Unfortunately they both died during molts, and of course I didn't know for a month or more, because you pretty much never see them out. I went to feed them for the second time and got suspicious because neither responded again, so I started investigating and both had attempted to molt and died. They were the only T's I've had die in my care.
It was a baboon spider which bit the young Tolkien in South Africa and the resultant trauma probably lies at the root of his creation of the nightmarish Shelob in "The Lord of the Rings "and the Mirkwood spiders in "The Hobbit".

Ooo, interesting one! Thanks so much for the video, I really enjoyed it (as usual)! 🙌🏼😊🕷
Meanwhile my Brachypelma Hamorii takes several roaches at once, randomly jumps on the tongs and catches pray mid air, rolling around with it
Yeah I love my B.H. Super crazy wrestling moves at dinner time.
I love the t vagans. Mine gave me a threat pose. I saw your pure evil video. And I was sold hook line and sinker.
i appreciated the sync at 2:45
I have an OBT and I am most cautious with this one out of my 8 solely because of her speed and her defensiveness, but she hides most the time but when she does grace us with her presence it’s always so mesmerizing and she grows more beautiful
im shocked to know both h. maculata and p. murinus are in top 5, theyre both one of my favorites! ive had a p.murinus before but sold due to moving countries, i loved how it webbed out the whole enclosure than just have a boring plain tarantula on a cocopeat substrate.
My Black Velvet Was one of the most agressive T's ever, that thing would jump at you before you could even put food in the tank. And the fangs on her were massive
Music made me giggle. Love how you introduce the spiders like luxury cars
Wasn't surprised to see the orange baboon in the top spot. The guys that got me into the hobby called it "the orange bitey thing".
Thanks!
Your videos are very well put together! Informative, educational, and entertaining!
Glad you like them!
You sir are awesome and amazing and fun to watch,i love your wonderful videos 😊😊
Awesome video Richard thanks brother. I love the OBT tarantula.
Poor hentzi….so under appreciated. I live in AR and do see them quite often, but I love them. They’re so chill and I’ve picked up several of them with no problems at all.
OBT is damn cool! It's my second tarantula and many Ts seemed sooo slow, friendly and boring to deal with after him :)
My son and I found your channel just searching Google for tarantula videos. We loved your content so much that we subbed. Thanks much!
Awesome! Thank you!
excellent educational vidieo, keep up the great work.
Happy birthday Richard this is one of my first videos I ever watched so I came back to say happy birthday on it
Shocked by the texas brown being on here!!!
I would and likely will add one to my collection in the future once I get the wife to chill about the three spiders I currently have lol
the H. maculata and P. murinus are easily my two favorites, crazy to see them both on this list!
My H.Mac is out almost every night, except when going into molt! If you stay up late, then their will be rarely a T that is a pet hole!
I do love the irony of buying a jumper, a docile, chill friendly spider for one of gods little tests by accident
(edit- obt killed the jumper)
I was going to say your last spider matches your beautiful ginger beard 😊 Interesting video. I guess people don’t like the wild guys!
Not so long ago we bought our first murinus. Looking forward to see it grow and show the attitude.
But the character is not the species, I find them vary alot between specimen.
the incredibly well edited ground slapping in time with the music for the h. gigas made me laugh so hard lol
They are just so beautiful.
Hi i agree i love p muticus thay are so beautiful. i want one to. Have a great day
I had a Togo as a freebie.
Almost.
Placed an order recently for a T.vagans sling it may be disliked but I’m excited to have a nice black spider with a lil attitude
That's cool. They definitely have personality that's for sure
Aww.. I love my Texas Brown. He's always out and so relaxed.
Great video man. My most aggressive was my Haplopelma Lividum, Colbalt Blue. She was just angry as hell. But beautiful.
I'm getting itchy watching these videos. But I can see them on your podcast or on t.v. but I will freakout if I see one for real!
I absolutely love my OBT. Big ol chicken. She loves her cork tube and often sits half out of it all the time.
Obt is such a beautiful spider, it's striking looks makes up for it's behavior imo.
im having a sling obt and red rump and i absolutely love them. im a new keeper so im just enjoying every Ts i have
Brilliant video Richard as usual, i was a little surprised at some of the spiders 🕷 chosen.
I had a red rump years ago. She was very docile and easy to handle. Had a orange baboob too. I gave it shallow bedding with a half log so I could see her more often. Mean as hell though. Lol
I’m here because of UA-cam’s algorithm and I didn’t know I needed this until now. 😊
Welcome to channel and thanks for watching. You should check out these videos I made. They're a little different but they're my favorite: ua-cam.com/play/PLjBrtja7Q8uhos5c0u-GRVIydAnPnNd6t.html&si=dgUDaL1JMCiBBa4A

I love the Togo Starburst! I mean come on, the carapace looks like the Millennium Falcon for goodness sake!! 🤩
I recently lost my rescue old male Texas brown. He was in bad shape when I got him and was looking ok again and found him deceased. I was devastated!
(Im also getting a chilobrachys electric blue)
That being said i have zero experience with spiders of this speed.
2:51 'Look Richard, I am dancing 🎶 😂
Awww I love my T vagans. 😢. He might be common but I think he’s a beautiful red and black
Speaking of velvet spiders would you recommend for a beginner just wondering what your opinion would be 🎃
Ive seen T. vagans in the wild, my first time seeing a tarantula in the wild before and I thought they were quite beautiful
WHAT!!! The Heteroscodra Maculata is my second favorite tarantula of all time. I have one now and it is definitely very reclusive, but I see it at least once each day on the cork bark. It's also defensively bitten and slapped at its food, but I still love my little Tetra.
I have a King Baboon. Sometimes I think it's dead until a rehouse lol
Never had a threat posture or anything, just never see it out as it's always burrowed.
When I bought my metialica pocy I got a H. Mac spiderlings for free. It was one of my favorite to watch. Especially feeding it fruit flies.
