    Hey Dave! I'm new to
    your channel, and I just wanted to tell you how much I admire your patience when it comes to handling your tarantulas. I currently have 5 of them, and 4 are slings. I came to your channel to learn about housing and keeping them because the species are new to me. I've been in the hobby for almost 20 years now, but I took a break. They are amazing animals, and you are a great example of what to do and not do when it comes to Ts. Wishing you all the best and your H. maculata is absolutely beautiful 😍 I can't wait til my little one grows up now 😂

    I bought myself a starburst tarantula last Thursday and I wasn't looking forward to place it in its new home due to how it behaved in the shop, so I watched this video first and it was a piece of cake. I just grabbed the Cork bark where it was sitting on and moved it to the new tank. Yes I'm really glad that I found your channel. Thanks very much

    Thanks for the tip about the crickets/flies. Not my fave things but bought some in desperation a few weeks ago. As expected my jumping spider wasn't interested and now I'm stuck with the things! Fortunately I have a cold porch and they're out there. Will probably end up freezing the crickets (good job I have a spare freezer too!) my rats might eat them.

    I subbed because your spiders are very beautiful! But I don't like spiders in general, they give me the Willies. Snakes don't bother me, I like snakes, but spiders is a whole different ball game for me.
    I have a dog, always have had dogs my whole life. I've also had a couple of parrots at different times, and I was really into fish and aquariums for a while too.

    I agree. Many speicies have a bad reputation, but if you are calm, they act calm. Also, many times when a keeper says their tarantula us very nasty i see that they are not set up right. If say a Haplopelma have a deep moist substrate they are often very "calm" If they are not, they are much mir narly.

    Phorid flies! I have kept tarantulas for 20 years and ALWAYS have had these flies. In the beginning i rehoused the spiders, but that did not matter so i started using fly-paper instead. This reducing the numbers, but i never get rid of them all. I also think crickets and roaches are vectors fir them. They are very irritating but i have learned to live with them as "part".if the hobby I also have small native spiders loose in my rarantula room. So yeah

I just like you got most of my mulch, leaflitter and bark from outside and i am sure that these flies can come into the terrariums from everywhere, not only from crickets? Iopods and other small organisms are good in the fight against scuttle flies, that and flypaper

    • @Dedlyniteshade
      @Dedlyniteshade 2 роки тому

      @@daveslittlebeasties I hadnt eathir till a gd few months ago but was recommended by an isopod youtuber (aquaramax).
      Backstory- Theres a couple of species of beneficial nematodes that can be used in soil to kill larvae from fungus gnats, mosquitoes etc. there not the same as the ones that can kill tarantulas or anything else. They can only kill things that are in a larvae stage.
      Dont quote me on this part but I think it's the natral bacteria in them that dose it. So "mosquito bits" is just a product with the same bacteria as the nematodes.
      You soak them in water for a with them use the water to spray the enclosures.
      It doest kill the flies but stops them reproducing an a lil fly paper will catch them.
      I mind thinking the bag was a bit pricey but I've found I don't need to make it as strong as the instructions say too and you dont need to sproper soak the area so the bag I got had lasted ages.
      2 secs I go find a link an add it here:)

I've had this malady as far back as I can remember. They are quite beautiful creatures and I find them very interesting to watch and read about, but that's as far as it goes. I can hurt myself trying to get away from them. I have much fear and respect for them. I also have the utmost respect for you as an owner& breeder. You are so calm and gentle with them. Keep to Dave's mantra of "Be calm, be gentle, and love your spider". If you panic (you will release pheromones, have jerky movements, etc.), your spider is going to panic. I find it also helps the rehome if you cover the enclosure walls in black paper and avoid the use of bright light. Use red light (cheap flashlight off Amazon). The new enclosure then becomes a soothing dark area to move into.
