John DiMaggio had a character who literally only said a single word over and over and it easily ranks as one of the most entertaining characters in animation

All it took was one line from Rose in this video to realize that Rose and Katara share a voice something that never occurred to me when i was younger but i somehow figured out the Rose/Huntsgirl twist the same way.
Actually, the season 1 character designer died(the one responsible for the style), and that seems to be a big reason why they switched the style for season 2. I’m from Chile and we didn’t have any access to Disney Channel till they decided to broadcast it to Latin America back in 2005. So, having Disney Channel before 2005 was a “posh thing”. You had to have a different TV service than the classic VTR most of us had. Jake Long was one of the first Disney Channel shows to be shown in Chile. It’s fun because they translated the show’s name from “American Dragon” to Dragon Occidental” meaning “Western Dragon”. I didn’t now that Jonas Brothers were the artists who performed the second season opening. Good video Billiam.

I couldn't remember if Fu Dog was voiced by John Dimagio but before he even spoke, I knew it was gonna be him. There's no one else more suited to use the same voice for a street smart horny humanlike dog
I have a feeling he plays martial arts characters, and it might be one of CinemaSins' cliches, like how Danny DeVito portrays circus characters and Finn Wolfhard portrays characters in horror media. More roles of Dante's include the good sensei in the baby bears pizza ninja episode of We Bare Bears, the traitor in the Kim Possible episode Exchange, and more recently, Spinkick in Carmen Sandiego.
I’ve always head canon it that they are in the same universe, and that the bad guys from the last true Gargoyles episode (Hunter’s Moon) went on to form the Huntsclan and decided that Dragons were better prey.

As a kid (and even now) Jake one and Rose were one of my favorite couples. For a kids show, they did a nice job with the story using the enemies to lovers trope mixed with the double identity trope. I went through a period in my life where I thought I had imagined this show's existence. Also, that moment when you didn't know the episode where Jake makes the wish to reset Rose's life and memory wasn't the series finale and she actually got her memory back and this video ended up spoiling it for you T_T.

I loved that Hayley bit. If they made a running gag that Hayley wanted to be the American dragon or maybe even grandpa jabbing at how Hayley should be the American dragon that would drive the point home more then just Hayley being some perfectionist. That would say Hayley is so perfect because she has less responsibilities. Heck that IS what they said when they showed her grades slipping and her school attendance falling behind . That's realistic in the ever used "some youth has to protect the world" story line
Tbh I have more nostalgia for the 1st season, but I distinctly remember loving more episodes from season 2. The Gorgon sisters were some of favs as a kid, and I also remember loving the S2 Jake rap more than the 1st one.
For me it sticks out as a really relatable episode for kids going through puberty. It was an excellent metaphor for that experience, which is one reason the whole “secret superhero life” genre works so well, as it’s a natural metaphor for a teen’s struggle for independence apart from their parents and peers. It just works really well.
@@ryanb3665 Personally, I think that what sets this show apart from most of the others is that Jake actually isn't the school loser like Timmy Turner or just about 99% of all the other cartoon shows out there that aim at the lowest common denominator and instill within kids the notion that all heroes are oppressed whereas those who are more popular than them are inherently evil and out to get them. Jake, in turn, is both popular _and_ kind-hearted at the same time.
Seeing you happy made me happy so thanks. Ever since I started antidepressants my mood swings has been hard, I'm legit happy crying over you appreciating the wholesomeness
I remember reading that one of the creators of the show was a fan of Eminem, which is why they spelled Hailie’s name the way they did; that’s the same spelling as Eminem’s daughter, Hailie.
His original look is more generic-Western-dragon. I like the snakier redesign better; it does a better job of combining elements of Western and Eastern dragons.
Aside from the art change this show really is excellent. The themes of duty over passion is a valuable and important. Especially given the ending. Truly this is the best Harry Dresden adaptation
Honestly I forgot how good this show was? I was super into the first season but fell out w the new art style and my own increased business w clubs at school, but I def need to give it a rewatch and this was just the motivation I needed
This show was my favorite one as a kid! So many fond memories, except somehow I never understood that the animation style changed midway through. It was really jarring on a rewatch as an adult, but I think the characters and lessons are still charming, and the world building and lore is fun. Reminds me of a 2000’s version of Gargoyles in a way.
You could also read on a series of crossover fanfiction about Jake, team up with Danny Phantom and Randy Cunningham, labeled as The Secret Trio if you like, and Merry Christmas man, peace!
My name is Jake and growing up watching this show in first grade I told everyone I was named after Jake Long, even though I was born before the show came out. It was the biggest flex of my childhood. I love this show.
I just remember a few things. The Jake and Rose episodes, the one about his cousin and some kid seat, and something about a sorcerer kid. Not sure why, but I remember those episodes very well, but the rest I just can't remember.
Finally, someone who appreciates season 2. Not all the new designs were great (Pandarus), but it had a more stylish look and better stories and writing in general. Except for the finale, of course.
I honestly didn't mind the new designs of Season 2, but if I had to say which characters I didn't like in the new version, it would have to be the oracle twins In the S1 design they look like well DUH twins, and their style show very well to how one look like a Sunshine girl, and the other look like a gloom goth girl, but the important part is that you could obviously twll that they were twins But in the S2 they completely change them, they don't look like twins anymore and what's worse is that they change their hair color, they were much better as redheads. That's my only complaint, everything else was just fine

Fun fact: The Chinese dragon is also known as a Long.
Somehow he got a last name that identifies what he is despite having a father that's unrelated to it.
Maybe he got it from his mother? There isnt any law that says he couldnt have inherited it from her side.

For a G-rated show, it was pretty damn explicit when it comes to all sorts of sexual innuendos. Guess that's part of its charm and the reason why it clicked with so many teens.

Always weirded out that they showed Rose had a twin and just completely removed that twin from canon when it came time to see Rose's family.
I read somewhere if they got another season the twin was supposed to appear
God, this show is still one of my favorites. That episode where Jake wishes that the Huntsclan had never taken Rose destroyed 10 year old me lmao.
It's still not on Disney Plus, the cowards
Edit: yes it's there now, I made this comment two months ago
Stereotypes I'd say is the reason, at least in S1's. Jake has cringey af dialogue those episodes. S2 fixed all that and he's more levelheaded, but it sucks we had to give up the stellar animation style for something more scaled back...
Same thing with the kh show we were promised
@@OddOneOut665 I dunno if Disney+ is scared of getting complaints for really, REALLY dated slang. It wasn't racist, just kind of dated. Even when it came out Jake's "cool guy" talk wasn't something I ever heard kids at my school using.

Fun fact: Jake Long is voiced by Dante Basco, aka the voice actor for Prince Zuko. Mae Whitman, the voice actress for Katara, plays Rose in this series. Both Jake and Rose are an item in this series. So any Zutara fans can imagine a what-if situation where those two became endgame. You're welcome. ;)
Okay, well that is surprising.
All it took was one line from Rose in this video to realize that Rose and Katara share a voice something that never occurred to me when i was younger but i somehow figured out the Rose/Huntsgirl twist the same way.

@@bonkai68 To be fair, the Rose = Huntsgirl thing is explicit from the start of the show.

My favorite episode was the one where Jake ages and has to deal with adult responsibilities, and goes into horrible credit card debt.
"Why cant my horny dog be an expensive breed so i can sell his pups?!"
Actually, the season 1 character designer died(the one responsible for the style), and that seems to be a big reason why they switched the style for season 2. I liked the season 1 style as a kid too, but now as a grownup cartoonist, the S2 style makes a lot of sense.
Great video! The JakeRose dynamic and relationship was epic. I loved how you brought up how wholesome the trio's friendship was ;w;. Now do Juniper Lee next.
What was the name of the Season 1 designer? I don't think it's on IMDB
I’ve gotta be honest, I hated the s2 design as a kid bc I though the s1 design was hotter loll
"Ain't no Thang like a Chicken Wang" is the best line I learned from this show.
I still say that to this day. And you just reminded me where it was from 😅
I remember laughing my ass off in the midst of class remembering that.
Does chicken not just have cloacas? Or are they like ostriches and crocodiles?
Remember how jarring it was when they changed animation styles?
I remember so much of the marketing was focused on his new shorts
No.
I honestly prefer how they look in S2. But the change was certainly drastic.
I didn't noticed as a kid. I was surprised when I rewatched two years ago. But the only changes that bothered me was about the twins' redesign, it was fine for me with the other characters. This show is underrated.
I remember as a kid I hated the new style so much I just decided not to watch the show anymore and if episodes with the new animation came on I would change the channel. I was a salty kid lol

Did anyone ever wonder what happen to Rose's twin sister right after she reunited with her family in the end?
i noticed that when i watched it on tv and now it really bothers me. they never even mention the twin when rose loses her memory too

Is Dante Basco now typecasted to being the dude that either learns from dragons or becomes a dragon?
Or uhh, both, in this case.
All I can is that his characters are mostly red

I would hope so
I’m down for that. Humans suck
It’s nuts there wasn’t a gargoyles/American dragon crossover. That would write itself.
I’ve always head canon it that they are in the same universe, and that the bad guys from the last true Gargoyles episode (Hunter’s Moon) went on to form the Huntsclan and decided that Dragons were better prey.
Hadn't Gargoyles been over for years by the time American Dragon started?
As I grow up I learn that more and more of my childhood animated crushes are all voiced by the same few voice actors 😳

“better than i remember” BRO! this show was my shit back in the day (and it still is. i’m one of the like 5 people actively thinking about/drawing/watching it)!!!!! it was my favorite show growing up and i’m part of the minority that prefers season 2’s art style over s1 :) (also there’s an actual plot. the academy is the best episode undisputed imo) this show totally got robbed of the 4 seasons and a movie that it deserved u_u
ALSO i dunno if you know but there’s an alternate universe out there called “the secret trio” that combined danny phantom, randy cunningham and american dragon because all three shows have such a similar concept so someone was like “Hey! Let’s Combine Them” and it’s cool stuff!!

One of my top wishes for Disney+ is for this show to be available. I have so many fond memories of my childhood that involve this show. Hopefully they won’t ignore it any longer than they already have. ❤️
This show wouldn't be the last time that John DiMaggio got to voice a wisecracking, talking dog who assists a kid hero!

As a kid (and even now) Jake one and Rose were one of my favorite couples. For a kids show, they did a nice job with the story using the enemies to lovers trope mixed with the double identity trope.

I went through a period in my life where I thought I had imagined this show's existence. The way they concluded Rose's story on the show and, in extension, her relationship with Jake really tore me up when I saw it for the first time.
Also, that moment when you didn't know the episode where Jake makes the wish to reset Rose's life and memory wasn't the series finale and she actually got her memory back and this video ended up spoiling it for you T_T.
Me now: oh yeah I remember when they discovered each other's identities, that hurt pretty good.
Me back then: *Don't even touch me I'm gonna be crying for the next three days*
I always liked the episode where Jake sheds his dragon skin, idk why but it's always been one of my favorite stand alone episodes.
@@ryanb3665 Either that or they have a fetish
One of the few instances where the new artstyle validated its existence- woulda been weird with the original artstyle

Dante and Mae were everything. And were getting checks from both Disney and Nickelodeon. KING and QUEEN.
Dear God, HE SAID IT!!

I still heavily prefer Jake's original look as a dragon. I'm pretty indifferent about the entire rest of the cast's redesign though.
His original look is more generic-Western-dragon. I like the snakier redesign better; it does a better job of combining elements of Western and Eastern dragons.
Jake Long and W.I.T.C.H. were the only shows I liked on Disney growing up. But they were both so damn good.
I only remember this show because of a Toonami bumper where TOM held a VHS with the show's logo on it and threw it away, claiming Naruto was better XD
Aside from the art change this show really is excellent. The themes of duty over passion is a valuable and important. Especially given the ending.

This show was my favorite one as a kid! So many fond memories, except somehow I never understood that the animation style changed midway through.
It's cool that they gave him pointed ears, gives a little extra to his character.

Finally, someone who appreciates season 2. Not all the new designs were great (Pandarus), but it had a more stylish look and better stories and writing in general. Except for the finale, of course.
I honestly didn't mind the new designs of Season 2, but if I had to say which characters I didn't like in the new version, it would have to be the oracle twins
In the S1 design they look like well DUH twins, and their style show very well to how one look like a Sunshine girl, and the other look like a gloom goth girl, but the important part is that you could obviously twll that they were twins
But in the S2 they completely change them, they don't look like twins anymore and what's worse is that they change their hair color, they were much better as redheads.
That's my only complaint, everything else was just fine
I love the season 2 art style. As a kid it blew my mind when the art change happened. Such a great show!
