I sort of disagree that unique classes or the like should be locked behind a completionist bonus. That essentially guarantees that less than 0.1% of the player base will ever touch the content placed there.
+Warp Scanner Well, if the company does it right, it is done as extra content. It's like a new game mode with special things. If you have a fully fleshed out game with the dynamic of those classes working together, you can then add a new set of classes that have a correlation of their own. This wouldn't be like developers nowadays adding endings as DLC and crap like that. It would be a totally extra feature, and also celebrating the completionist type fans too. It isn't bad to add a bonus for people that want to do the extra stuff for it, I think. As long as your main game isn't found wanting of content in the process, that is.
Generation 0(~TBC Productions) The problem is, as he points out in the video, that doing this completionist thing for this particular game wasn't fun. Anything that adds to the game mechanics themselves would behind a wall of unenjoyable grinding that a lot of folks would be on the outside looking in. And once they got it, they'd be too sick of the game to use it anyway. I get where he is coming from, he feels cheated. But that's because he insists on 100% every game, even games that probably shouldn't be 100%'d unless you are an utter fanatic of it. Of course, he's based this entire series on being a completionist. So he's sort of trapped himself. And I really do think being so insistent on 100%ing the games he plays is having a toll on him and his enjoyment. I myself only insist on just completing the main story of any game I start. And even that measly insistence can take a toll on me.
Warp Scanner Wait, you continue to play a game till the ending if you don't like the game? Weird, I often don't finish games that I like, but don't love.
*grumble* FFI was based off of d&d, a western franchise. Then japan gives the west FF mystic quest, because they think the west is too stupid for JRPGs...
ok ok ok hold up. Dragon quest I was based off of western RPGs like D&D and Ultima, but japan didn't have many PCs so they had to make it for consoles. So in the west RPGs were for PC gamers, not younger (on average) and simpler console gamers.
I'm pretty sure I never would have completed the 8-form boss. Good googly woogly! I think a lot of us tend to view games as if there were no internet. Like, would this be worth it if the game was all I had? It's a hard situation to imagine these days. Banjo-Kazooie, now that was a completion bonus right there.
Honestly, I tried completing the psp version, but after going through the frustrating final bonus dungeon once, after dying 6 times on the way, I decided screw it and just settled with playing through everything.
Crazy this was 6 years ago now, always good to go and rewatch after a few years. Side note, Red mage is a god damn monster. I cant even count how many times I played the gba version.
On my first play through of the game (GBA version), on my way to fighting Tiamat, the first encounter I got in the boss room, I fought Warmech. I got my shit rekt.
Completionist comment section before Greg left: "Get rid of Greg, he is unfunny and sucks!" Completionist comment section after Greg left: "Bring back Greg, the show sucks without him!" Geez people, pic a side already.
People just can't be satisfied, they are always going to complain about something. I miss Greg too but why should either if them work together if they weren't happy?
yeah but in this game makes you do a f**k ton of grinding. As opposed to FF games IV and after, THIS one will make you cringe and writhe at the very thought of another random encounter.
Final Fantasy 1 makes your grind for like 2 hours at the max. In fact I got through the PSP version of the game without any level grinding at all, it's a REALLY easy game. I prefer the PS1 version over this because it's actually challenging.
Sonic the Hedgehog When you say vba, do you mean gba? The gba version of the game is basically the same as the psp version of the game but with worse graphics, sound, and a bit less content. Also I have played through the nes version as well, and it's as hard as the ps1 version of the game but with more glitches and more mistranslations. The reason that I like the ps1 version the most is because it stays loyal to the nes version's difficulty well fixing all the problems that Square couldn't back when the game was first released.
In regards to random encounters: I grind the first dungeon of the game until I'm capable of defeating the first boss without having to Heal more than once or twice (9/10 FF games have a boss that counterattacks you in the first dungeon. Mist Guardian FF4, Scorpion Mech FF7, etc so that's the "twice") and then once I'm done that, I never run from a battle. This makes it so I never have to grind. I'm always just a couple steps ahead of the first boss due to pacing, and rarely near the end I will have to grind a little bit more just to be able to beat the last boss.
Gee, an epic RPG where you have to collect treasures of the four elements. I've never heard that on before **shows an empty hand as I don't have any Final Fantasy games**
I actually like the slow moving text and the credits, because when I spend that many hours playing a FF game, it is sooooo rewarding and relaxing to just sit back and listen to dat music!
Finally, a PSP game! even though it's a remake. You definitely need to complete more games from handheld consoles. It was a good review, kudos for the references to Sakaguchi
Currently playing the PSP version on my PS Vita. This is the first time I have really gotten into a Final Fantasy game. I played FF7 & 10 in the past but reasons whatever didn’t stay with them and went onto other game’s but now is the time to finally get into this series (been playing games since around 1992 so better late then never) Really enjoying it, just over seven hours into it now.
I'm really late to mention this, but all of the random names you can get for party members are references to other Final Fantasy games. And coincidentally enough, Jirard's entire party here is references to FFVI. Duncan is Sabin's master, Gungho is a friend of Strago, and Duane is half of a couple of teenagers in love from the town of Mobliz.
This and Dragon Warrior addicted me for life to RPG's, I always liked to pick 3 Fighters and a Red Mage for my party. What a great era I got to grow up in.
You know I love the FF games FFT being my favorite in the entirety of the series. But I gotta say I have always wanted to see you do a Star Ocean 2 till the ends of time complete a game that for the ps1 defined in my opinion the very best of rpg awesome. And to this day is one of my favorite games of all time. Also for what it's worth I tune in to every episode. Great work man.(and your team/friends)
Some day you should play final fantasy 2! Some times it feels like I'm the only one who played it. It's leveling mechanics are pretty different and the way you look at weapons is also unique to the series!
If you want to know what happened between Sakaguchi and Square it was this: Sakaguchi was responsible for Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within. after nearly tanking square with the budget for that movie that flopped, he was pretty much relegated to the status of figurehead at Square. It was pretty much this financial mistake that caused them to unwillingly enter into a merger with Enix in 2003. He pretty much left square around the time of Final Fantasy X to start his own company, two years before the merger.
Well, he cant please everyone. I still like it because its main focus, being a completionist, is still here. Yeah, there are less jokes, but i see that as more of a change of pace than a downside. If you focused just on the parts Greg added to the show, then you will most likely be caught off guard with how on track jirard stays. If Greg comes back then we can welcome him with open arms. Until then I choose to just sit back and enjoy the hard work the TOVG people put into this free weekly program
I like Greg addition to The Completionist alot, but him being gone doesn't make the series worse imo. I've always been here for Jirard's reviews personally. Still enjoy it just as when Greg was hurr. I do miss the "BUT BEARDMAN" tho lol
I know this comment is super old but it's so wild for someone to watch a review that says this game took way too long to complete, and the response is "do 14 more of them"
I don’t think you know how long it takes to complete ONE Final Fantasy game, let alone 14 more, 16 if you include sequels and take out X which he’s already done a video on.
my bros and i got this game on the gb and it was still the most fun and the most amazing expereance i had in an rpg discovering what the game had to offer was amazing and the extra long dungans were rilly fun for me and my brothers being as yong as we were all and all what this rambal of a porly spelt thing is trying to say that i love this first Final Fantasy and thank you the completionist for reinspiering that love
Dawn of souls was one of my favorite childhood games, and beating both Final Fantasy 1 and 2 on it were major successes for my child era. I can completely recall beating Chaos with my underleveled characters and feeling so accomplished like it was yesterday.
TetraMaster47 this... may also be a bit late, but this actually isn't true. There have been runs of FFIX that finished all side quests (including that ridiculous "go trigger a scene in the final dungeon and then head back to lindblum every time a new cutscene happens oe boss is fought for a total of 18 times" nero quest line) and picked up all items and still had time to pick up the Excalibur II. Alternatively, just have the game running for two real-life years so the timer overflows and you have a window of a couple hours to get it again.
@HicksZ34 I'm going to be honest, I had no idea people would ever reply to this. I don't even remember what was going on in my head at the time. I do remember, however, that I hadn't thought of that at the time. Thanks, I guess?
Every single video i go to: Sir Toasty's comment Haedox's comment bellow Sir Toasty's....... They are following us, we need to escape guys, its their master plan to rule the UA-cam comment section!
BraydenFan They have bots that mass upvote their comment. After they are at around 15+ votes, the mob mentality does the rest. It's sad really, that they want attention so bad they go out of their way to cheat the system...
ZFFM My fucking lord, no they don't. I've watched Haedox and Sir Toasty before, they would never use bots. They watch videos, and comment on them. BIG. FUCKING. DEAL.
Having just played this game myself, I have to say...this game is iconic and I love what it did, allowing Square to exist and creating a franchise that has gone on to create much greater games later on. This game I enjoyed and I thought it was fun...but it definitely has some flaws. Sure, this was one of the first RPGs of its kind and so that does make it more impressive in a way, that they were able to make it work, but some of the designs would not be used today. Like having so many dead ends and empty rooms that you have to plow through endless monsters to see. Or having death trap rooms where each tile is a guaranteed fight...and the room has nothing in it. The conveyance is vague too. The player gets so little info on how to progress and sometimes you need to search to figure out what to do. The story is, at the time, much bigger than other games, but the player doesn't hear a ton of it until a chunk into the game, adding to the vagueness. I'm surprised that I can play a game with so many definite flaws and yet enjoy it so much. Also, why did you call the crystals "orbs"? They are very definitively crystals. Iconic-ly crystals.
Dang Jirard... You are really hardcore. Completing so many games (a select few a huge challenge I would assume) is an amazing feat. We all really appreciate the work, time, and pain you go through for our entertainment.
I hope they bring classes back one day, I really like the replayability of early final fantasy’s and fire emblems(haven’t played past path of radiance) where you could main different types of character
Nice to see the implementation of the Gerg Element :) I was wondering if you were going to put away with those kinda jokes, because Greg left, but you didn't, you just found a way to keep that awesome element of your awesome show going. Great job on this episode :)
The version people should play is the PS1 remake, which you can also download on your PSP. It has the original difficulty level and magic system. Subsequent remakes severely reduced difficulty and added those tedious bonus dungeons.
I remember when this was out on the NES. You had to buy every item one at a time. So if you wanted 10 potions you had to buy each potion individually. Glad they changed that in the later games.
2 years when I moved into my new house I played halfway through this game on PSP and then put it down... after watching this video for the fourth time I think I'm ready to pick it back up again and grind at the hall of giants once more. Thank you, Jirard!
Matthew the Earth Adept I'm all for this. The Golden Sun games are some of my favorite games of all time. The ability to carry stuff over to an extent was also very interesting. I actually built a DnD campaign based off of that series.
Wtninja hey man, that's cool that you made a dnd campaign for Dnd. What version did you base it around? Do you still have your base classes? It would be interesting to try it out.
Chaos was not a big joke to me. I did not, until this video, know that you could upgrade your classes in this game. Also, I didn't know how to properly use the giant's glove in battle until the second time I tried to beat him, which went much better than the first.
Lord_Derse Oh man fuck you for even suggesting that, leveling up all the leaders to the max rank is a NIGHTMARE. Even just collecting all the cards to begin with is a nightmare. Now excuse me while I start a new file on duelist of the roses.
My favorite Final Fantasy experience was the sixth(or third for some people), which luckily, was the same game that introduced me to the series, but if it were up to me to introduce people to the entire series, I say they should start with the seventh, as a test of skill and a formal introduction to it all.
Willie touset 7 is too different from almost all others. Its not a good intro. 6 is usually the best intro, then they can choose any of the 5 before or they can play 8,9 or 10. Depending on which way they wanna go lvling and combat. 7 has similar lvling and combat, but graphics are too different to then go back to pixels. 6 allows that transition to older graphics more tolerable. 3D to 2D pixels will make most everyone quit. 7 is best after playing 6 and a few others to get a feel for final fantasy in general. Then they can fully enjoy the amazing story and hate on 8 and 9 for having crappy stories. And hate on 10 for being too convoluted and taking way too long to develop any sort of story progression.
Man watching this and hearing him talk about the Final Fantasy 7 month he did makes me sad that I can’t watch it legitimately on UA-cam anymore. RIP The Completionists Final Fantasy Retrospective, you now reside on my hard drive never to be viewed by the masses ever again.
To be completely honest, FF6 was my first ever video game, and it's still my favorite game to this day. Great story, diverse and memorable cast of characters, smooth gameplay, and the GBA version included a couple challenging bonus dungeons. I just can't get enough of it. ^^
I grew up n the dawn of souls version and I would normally play 1 over 2 since it was bigger, better made and more fun over all. seriously fuck the 'level' up system in 2 sucks.
Yeah, I hate when someone leaves a company on bad terms and then the company pretends they never existed even though the company wouldn't be around if that person hadn't helped them in the early days. Right, Gre... ahem, Sakaguchi?
I remember buying this remake when I was in college in '08 and it definitely made the two hours of commuting on buses per day easier. I never went so far as to complete it, I think I only finished two of the new dungeons. I had no idea Final Fantasy IX (my personal favourite of the series) sold so few copies! Makes sense to me though, most times when people find out that it's my favourite, I'm met with pointed questions instead of mutual appreciation. Thanks for this entire series of videos so far. I started on episode 100 a few days ago and plan to go back to #1 once I'm up to date.
I'm playing FF for the first time in my life, and I'm starting on the NES game. The only other rpg game I've played that's similar is Rainbow Moon, and I absolutely loved it. I'm a couple hours into FF and I'm hooked. Glad I went with the original and not a remake. Wish me luck on my adventures into the FF universe. Not bad for a 36 year old. Lol.
I have to agree with Krucifus. At best the remakes are something to look at after experiencing the original, warts and all. I don't agree with the Completionist's idea that the PSP version is the Definitive version--for one thing its based on Dawn of Souls, which overhauled major aspects of the game mechanics such as replacing the magic system with a standard MP system (which according to most, makes the game redonkulously easy). I just finished FF1 myself, but I'm thinking of picking up the PSP version just to give me something to play on my own PSP (and because I own the Dragon Warrior GBC remakes so why not... but like FF, DW is also better on the NES).
Jispy Moe Dantes as I've beat both I'd have to say it was far more of a make myself beat it and play all the way through for the original where as the psp did a better job keeping me play so I'd say psp >nes and how can you say the original is better if you never beat/played the remake...
I've played Dawn of Souls, which PSP is based on. Didn't beat it, but its not like most of the major differences aren't immediately obvious (one later change that DOES bother me tho is replacing the space station dungeon with just a flying castle. Why, Squeenix?) Better or worse is always subjective, my problems are that overhauling the game mechanics practically make it a new game. You can't be "definitive edition" if you're essentially a whole new product. It's the same problem as that fan project to port Wolfenstein 3D levels into Doom. The mechanics are completely wrong, and rooms that would be tense and require strategy in Wolf3D (the boss floor of episode 3 is a good example) are complete cakewalks in the Doom engine, even if you've got the difficulty set high. Just had a talk on some forums about this and this is at least one thing the Dragon Warrior Gameboy versions do better--all they do is adjust EXP/GP payouts and add some rooms and dialogue, but the basic gameplay is functionally similar to the NES, so they can be thought of more like patches (I still prefer the NES but that's largely because I prefer playing on a TV vs a portable and like the wider viewing space) whereas FF1 makes me feel like... well, like I'm playing Wolf3D maps converted into the Doom engine.
+HicksZ34 honestly the spells which don't work aren't that huge a deal since they tend to be buff/debuff spells and even in the beginning FF was an RPG franchise where direct damage or healing was a better use of your spell charges (unlike most other 8-Bit RPGs where you will die if you don't learn to status). My first FF experience was the SNES titles, but I mean, if you can adapt to later games that do something different (like FF12 on PS2 or Chrono Cross on the PS1) then why not earlier games? Admittedly though when it comes to NES RPGs I kinda like the Dragon Warrior games more. FF1 is good but 2 is atrocious and I don't remember how I felt about 3. By contrast I've liked all the Dragon Warrior games I've played.
@DejaVoodooDoll Not even sure what you're replying to as (rechecking my own responses) one of my comments was that the changes made the new versions too easy. How the hell does that equate to "shutting off your brain and grinding past the need for strategy?" Especially since we're talking about Final Fantasy, which isn't exactly strategically deep in any edition. If we were talking about Shining Force or something I could understand you, but right now its just out of left field.
Holy cow. I would love if you did this same format for every final Fantasy game. You could even make it a series by going over every Final Fantasy leading up to XV when it comes out :D Thumbs up if you agree, guys!
I never said he should do every one back-to-back. Well, I suggested the 15 thing. But he could truncate them going into it. And quality videos take time.
It should be mentioned that the remakes of Final Fantasy 1 made the game much easier due to some of the changes in mechanics. For instance, mages were closer to a Dungeons and Dragons style magic user on the NES version, only being able to cast a certain amount of spells per level, as opposed to using an mp system.
Richard Garriot's Ultima, of which there were some before FF1, had created such ideas earlier but let's be honest, these ideas come from fantasy books.
The NES version of this game was my introduction to RPGs and was one of the biggest kicks to the crotch I experienced in the NES era. The difficulty was brutal mainly due to the limited spell uses (Screw the Vancian spell system) and the fact that you only had basic potions for item healing. You really needed to learn which item cast spells when used to give yourself a comfortable level of difficulty especially in the Temple of Chaos. Somehow I managed to beat the game without utilizing those items. Those last two floors were some of the most intense RPG gameplay I ever endured.
22:52 "...and while I usually tend to agree with this..." Stop lying Jirard, I've been watching the show since the start (THPS2 S2) and the fact that you are too obcessed with the reward is one of the main complains I always had about the show. I'm not trying to defend the game in any way, shape or form, I agree that the game is too repetitive and there's no reason to do all that extra stuff, even tho I loved the extra dungeons, but just admit once and for all Jirard, sometimes your obcession for the reward aspect of the game and the hurry to complete games for the show detracts from your playing experience. Well, good episode... seen better ones, but hey, isn't easy to do wonders every time, right?
A couple of things. First of all, I've recently played the game boy advance version of final fantasy and I would just like to say, HOW DO YOU SURVIVE WITHOUT A WHITE WIZARD?!?? THEY HAVE SO MANY SUPER-POWERFUL EXCLUSIVE SPELLS! I would also like to say, 7:05 That is the music that plays in the dwarf mine thing. I never did give that dwarf his adamantite...
Final Fantasy 1 is easily one of my all-time favorite games. I've beaten the Gameboy version numerous times. As for the grinding aspect, I've only ever found myself having to grind twice, once outside of the elven kingdom and once before getting the fire crystal.
I actually *really* enjoyed this episode. I feel like the in-depth history lesson was quite interesting. However, I feel like the jokes are just forced. I think since Greg is gone, you may want to focus more on what you did in this episode: in-depth reviewing. I feel like it works far better for ya. :)
Wyaat perhaps if the combat wasn't so slow and tedious. After a while if you didn't get a good grasp on the battle system the game destroys you rather quickly. Unfortunately those are my thoughts on it. I enjoyed the bit I played but personally it wasn't for me.
I feel that the combat is much faster than the other games given the fact that you don't have to choose any options during trash encounters, everything is automated! And I had great fun setting up gambit systems good enough to beat bosses without any input at all! But I agree that the story was a bit lacking but at least we got balthier out of it.
Wyaat It is too automated. At a certain point I recall not even thinking and just moving around. It takes the game out of gameplay. It made tedious grinding even worse because it was ok just go guys kill em and then wait until you heard the death sound, because you did NOTHING. Granted yes you can play w/o it but it just makes a slow game that much slower, when all the equipment takes 50-100+ kills to get 1 item to drop to help you move on.
I totally agree, you don't have to play the Final Fantasy games from the first to last, just play the ones you want to play. The only ones I have ever played have been the playstation 1 and 2 ones and I am fine with that.
I had this game for the gameboy, I never completed it, but I did beat it and all of the bonus dungeons. I remember getting horribly lost before tiamat, it took me over a year to figure it out. And by that I mean I looked it up. by that point my team had almost max stats from me wandering around and playing the bonus dungeons. Despite that, the game was a lot of fun. I still boot it up from time to time to go through one of the bonus dungeons or fight chaos.
This game looks very good (aside from the nightmare of a post-game), and only for $10, too. Sucks that I'll to buy another PSP (I lost my old one, RIP Birth By Sleep, you'll be missed).
Final Fantasy is...one of those franchises where you can't please anyone. It doesn't matter what game you think is the best: you're always going to upset a majority of the fanbase with whatever you're favorite FF game is. Pick VI and people will think you're a douche for picking the same choice everyone else does (every "true" FF fan hates VII according to most of the fanbase) and if you pick VII, they'll just call you a nostalgic blind fagboy. I have personal opinions too but only note that I'm only doing the games I've played/watched (flames shields up, just in case): FF6: I've only watched a playthrough of this game and it's just okay overall. Sure, Kefka is a pretty good villain but his motive for destroying the world (*because he wants to*) isn't nearly as engaging as everyone makes it out to be. It just seems like the nostalgia talking at this point for most people. Speaking of which... FF7: I'll admit it, this is the first FF game I've ever played. However, it is by no means my favorite overall. Again, it's an okay game I occasionally replay (graphics have aged HORRIBLY though) but the fanbase for it is SO obnoxious (blind nostalgia is perhaps the most annoying thing about this fanbase, since most of them refuse to see glaringly obvious problems with the game) and Cloud is such an extremely overrated main protagonist that I have no idea whether I hate this game or not anymore. It's just meh at this point for me. FF8: I actually like this more than FF7 and it's mostly because everyone seems to hate it. The draw system is pretty much the worst part of the game but other than that, it's a good game and (like a lot of FF games) has a really good soundtrack. FF9: I've never played this game but from what I gathered, Vivi is the only rememberable character from this game so I can't say too much past that. FF10: This is my favorite FF game in the franchise and it's a game I played just recently thanks to the HD version. I honestly don't see many problems with this game (the worst one being just a small nitpick and that's the terrible mouth animations, a problem that they apparently haven't fixed from the original) so I enjoyed it quite a bit. FF10-2: I'm almost done with this game and honesty, I don't see why so many people hate this game. Sure, the fanservice is an occasional annoyance but other than that, everything else seems to be alright. Great gameplay (LOVE the battle system and job classes), decent story/soundtrack, and a pretty good main protagonist (Yuna's definitely better than Tidus, that's for sure). FF11: Never played nor heard much about it so don't ask. FF12: ...I don't like the MMO battle system. That is all. FF13/2/LR: BURN THESE GAMES WITH FIRE. These games tried so hard to be like FFX and X-2 that it's not even funny (much less flattering). These games fail in almost every regard and what's worse was that the trilogy basically copied elements from every other previous FF game (even copied the Garmant Grid from X-2 with a cheap knock off version in Lightning Returns). Lighting tries to be just like Yuna so bad (it only becomes more obvious in the sequels) that it's sickening.
TyroneTiggums64 I think it's because of how each game in the series can introduce such controversial elements and how certain games were made by different people which give them such a different feeling (1-5 by Sakaguchi, 6 was a team based effort, 7 and 8 by Kitase, 9 by Ito and Sakaguchi, X, X-2, and the XIII trilogy by Motomu Toriyama and Kitase). Compare this to the Dragon Quest series which have all been headed up by the same person. You can go into "What your favorite DQ topic?" and everyone will answer with radically different answers but no one will get angry at each other. There's something about Final Fantasy that really tears the fanbase apart.
TyroneTiggums64 FF6: Enjoyable, but it's not a game to leave for a while and try to come back too later. FF7: Definitely my favourite for personal reasons. The plot is a little weak by the last section of the game, but probably the best cast in the franchises history. FF8: As soon as it was revealed that they all knew each other as children but "forgot," I stopped playing. Really contrived storyline, and the whole romance arc is about getting Seifer's sloppy seconds. Let that sink in. Also the draw system fucking sucks. FF9: The front cover made it look shit, but I enjoyed it more than expected. Apart from Vivi and maybe the Villain's end, it's kind of forgettable though. FF10: - One of the worst plotlines in Video Game history. - One of the worst Villain's in Video Game history. - One of the worst Protagonists in FICTION - Suffer's from "the wrong protagonist" syndrome as despite Tidus constantly saying it's his story, it's really the story about Yuna coming to terms that she may have to sacrifice herself to save the world. ... Combat was probably the best in the series though so I'll give it that. FF10-2: When this game turned out to be better than 10, you know that 10 REALLY fucked up. FF12: Pretty much Star Wars and also suffers "the wrong protagonist" syndrome. Apart from the combat kinda being shit, better than most people give it credit for. I enjoyed it. Not even going to justify the 13 series with a response. Still cant believe the franchise is still alive after that.
TheBlower2000 I think at the time period it was released it may not have been so bad since story wasn't as important in games, but now it really doesn't hold up at all. Both 6 and 7 hold up better though so I dont know what that says.
TyroneTiggums64 I've played a few entries in the series, and here's what I think: 1: Pretty basic, but solid. On a side note, I think it's pretty cool how Umatsu managed to make a NES soundtrack that is incredibly enjoyable to listen to. 3: I really couldn't get into this one, but it seems okay. 4: This one really nailed the story, and is a joy to play. However, the graphics, even by SNES standards, are a bit dated. 5: I really like the class system. This is a pretty solid entry. Too bad we didn't get it in the states. 6: So many protagonists... But it also includes some of my favorites from any of the games (Terra, Shadow, etc.), and boasts a pretty neat art style. Not to mention one of the best soundtracks in any of the games! 7: Oh boy... When I first played this one, I just couldn't get enough of it! Now, looking back - Cloud is a pretty weak protagonist, Sepheroth is a cliche anime villain, the graphics are pretty nasty, and the story is over the top. However, I absolutely love the world that the game creates! It is the best part, and probably what hooked me on the game in the first place. 8: Didn't play, but it boasts my favorite Final Boss theme. 9: Again, didn't play, but the soundtrack is pretty good. After this, didn't play any others. Except Tactics. I can't get enough of tactics.
Worth noting that the PSP version's new bonus dungeon, the Labyrinth of Time, makes some of the GBA version's rarest encounters easier to find. For instance, there's a challenge in it where you're supposed to evade robots, but getting caught results in a guaranteed battle with a Warmech.
Holy shot! I started this video, paused it to watch Space Jam for the first time in ten years, then resumed it to recieve a barage of references! Perfect conclusion to an already surreal night :D
Have to post it, as a shout out:

Warp Scanner
Wait, you continue to play a game till the ending if you don't like the game? Weird, I often don't finish games that I like, but don't love.

I played this game on nes nearly 30 years ago. I was a child. It shaped me.
Honestly, I tried completing the psp version, but after going through the frustrating final bonus dungeon once, after dying 6 times on the way, I decided screw it and just settled with playing through everything.
I got this just after launch, i absolutely loved it. Played through it a dozen times.
Final Fantasy I. 1 hour straight. 59 hours of random battles.

Completionist comment section before Greg left: "Get rid of Greg, he is unfunny and sucks!"
Completionist comment section after Greg left: "Bring back Greg, the show sucks without him!"
Geez people, pic a side already.
People just can't be satisfied, they are always going to complain about something. I miss Greg too but why should either if them work together if they weren't happy?
What happened was that those who hated Greg stopped complaining and are now silent, and those who liked Greg were silent and now aren't.
It's like the Jontron-Game Grumps situation all over again.
Jesus Rodriguez Please don't bring this up. Everyone should, *SHOULD* accept the fact that there is no point to it.
Kritarion Oh don't worry, I'm glad he's gone.
I always loved grinding exp in rpgs. Having to put in a lot of time to level characters made you feel awesome when all the time paid off.
yeah but in this game makes you do a f**k ton of grinding.
I love it to! It's so satisfying! But it can get redundant and boring. Making the grind fun is hard, but for those who can, good job.
+Regal Pixel king
try the nes and vba one
THOSE are the hardest ones
Sonic the Hedgehog When you say vba, do you mean gba? The gba version of the game is basically the same as the psp version of the game but with worse graphics, sound, and a bit less content. Also I have played through the nes version as well, and it's as hard as the ps1 version of the game but with more glitches and more mistranslations. The reason that I like the ps1 version the most is because it stays loyal to the nes version's difficulty well fixing all the problems that Square couldn't back when the game was first released.

In regards to random encounters:
I grind the first dungeon of the game until I'm capable of defeating the first boss without having to Heal more than once or twice (9/10 FF games have a boss that counterattacks you in the first dungeon. Mist Guardian FF4, Scorpion Mech FF7, etc so that's the "twice")
and then once I'm done that, I never run from a battle.
This makes it so I never have to grind. I'm always just a couple steps ahead of the first boss due to pacing, and rarely near the end I will have to grind a little bit more just to be able to beat the last boss.
Or, in FF1, just use the PoP, it has great rewards and os an actual challenge to grind on
Gee, an epic RPG where you have to collect treasures of the four elements.
Man, I still love watching The Completionist as much as I always have. Keep it up, Jirard! It's amazing how you keep pushing forward! Respect.

Jirard, these videos are always one of the highlights of my week.
I love that soon after you get the class upgrades from Bahamut, weak enemies run off in fear
I feel that way about proper Final Fantasy 3. That game was phenomenal from a story telling perspective for its time. Truly the best FF in my opinion.
The leveling system of FF2 is why I consider it the worst of the Final Fantasy main series. Yes, even worse than 13.
But worse than 9?
9 was good though.
And I'm the pope.
This was my first Final Fantasy game and I do not regret it one bit. So many memories.
I've been trying to get back into the Completionist since Greg left....
... that's nice
tehn00bdude It feels soulless to me now. It's harder to watch...
Until then I choose to just sit back and enjoy the hard work the TOVG people put into this free weekly program
who?
I like Greg addition to The Completionist alot, but him being gone doesn't make the series worse imo. I've always been here for Jirard's reviews personally. Still enjoy it just as when Greg was hurr. I do miss the "BUT BEARDMAN" tho lol

Dawn of souls was one of my favorite childhood games, and beating both Final Fantasy 1 and 2 on it were major successes for my child era. I can completely recall beating Chaos with my underleveled characters and feeling so accomplished like it was yesterday.
Are you man enough to Complete Final Fantasy IX?
You know you want that Excalibur II!
This... may be a bit late, but if you want to get the Excalibur 2, you will skip a LOT of side quests.
It really would be a challenge to complete that!
@HicksZ34 I'm going to be honest, I had no idea people would ever reply to this. I don't even remember what was going on in my head at the time. I do remember, however, that I hadn't thought of that at the time. Thanks, I guess?

I just beat this game, and loved it
I completed this over and again with 4 of every type. Including white mages.

In all honesty, I love this game. The bonus dungeons are a pain though. Still, for me, this game is worthy of starting the series with.
The version people should play is the PS1 remake, which you can also download on your PSP. It has the original difficulty level and magic system. Subsequent remakes severely reduced difficulty and added those tedious bonus dungeons.
I swear to god, these old videos are so good, they have everything the new one's lack, like...

I share the pain. Ouch on this 30 floor loop-hell.
I remember when this was out on the NES. You had to buy every item one at a time. So if you wanted 10 potions you had to buy each potion individually. Glad they changed that in the later games.

Matthew the Earth Adept I'm all for this. The Golden Sun games are some of my favorite games of all time. The ability to carry stuff over to an extent was also very interesting. I actually built a DnD campaign based off of that series.
Wow that must have taken a lot of effort.
Yeah, it certainly did. All of my players love it though, so that certainly made it worth the effort.
It seems this comment is getting a lot of thumbs up will you review these games Mr.Jirard?
Wtninja hey man, that's cool that you made a dnd campaign for Dnd. What version did you base it around? Do you still have your base classes? It would be interesting to try it out.

Chaos was not a big joke to me. I did not, until this video, know that you could upgrade your classes in this game. Also, I didn't know how to properly use the giant's glove in battle until the second time I tried to beat him, which went much better than the first.
I truly didn't notice anything wrong with your voice! Great job once again!!

No matter how many times I hear the origin of the title Final Fantasy it always hits me hard as a fan of Squaresoft growing up.
Why, Squeenix?)
Better or worse is always subjective, my problems are that overhauling the game mechanics practically make it a new game.
How the hell does that equate to "shutting off your brain and grinding past the need for strategy?"
Especially since we're talking about Final Fantasy, which isn't exactly strategically deep in any edition. If we were talking about Shining Force or something I could understand you, but right now its just out of left field.
Is it me? Or does the Monk look like a Super Saiyan when he's promoted to a grandmaster?
Holy cow. I would love if you did this same format for every final Fantasy game. You could even make it a series by going over every Final Fantasy leading up to XV when it comes out :D
Thumbs up if you agree, guys!
He'd need like a year of playing nothing but FF games in order to do that
I never said he should do every one back-to-back.
Do a shin megami tensei game. Not persona

I would love for this to get a ps4 re-release
KingSacredSylon A FF 1-6 collection would be dope.
I hope you can review all the other Final Fantasies.
Those last two floors were some of the most intense RPG gameplay I ever endured.
this was my first FF game and one of my first traditional RPG's and i still love the franchise
They also had to change the name as another RPG (in the UK) was all ready called Fighting Fantasy.
Even better then the pixel version
no bonus dungeons
Expecting another new dungeon or a new class seems kinda... Out there..
Hearing the Final Fantasy theme at the credits brought a tear to my eye. It may be a small thing, but the series isn't the same without that tune.
God I love the old Final Fantasy games....All the way from 1 to 9
22:52 "...and while I usually tend to agree with this..." Stop lying Jirard, I've been watching the show since the start (THPS2 S2) and the fact that you are too obcessed with the reward is one of the main complains I always had about the show.

FF12 is the best. Everyone should play that one, no joke.
Wyaat perhaps if the combat wasn't so slow and tedious. After a while if you didn't get a good grasp on the battle system the game destroys you rather quickly. Unfortunately those are my thoughts on it. I enjoyed the bit I played but personally it wasn't for me.
Only real bad thing about 12 is that they didn't finish the damn game, it feels like 9 if it ended after you beat the queen.
Wyaat I agree, it's my favourite. Love some of the other ones too, but XII is special in a good way.
Tales of Maj'Eyal
I will await your pain and your soul
Sincerely
Chara
TheUltimateFanBoy And a PSP is nearly impossble to get conveniently anymore, aside from Amazon and eBay.
Yay.
TheUltimateFanBoy Grab a Vita or something. Loads of good JRPGs on there too.
Kenpokid4 Sure, but there's only like 3 I personally care for on a Vita (unless PSP game are available on it's PS Store).
TheUltimateFanBoy
PSP and PSOne games are available, as well as its own games (including indies like Spelunky and The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth).

I have personal opinions too but only note that I'm only doing the games I've played/watched (flames shields up, just in case):
FF6: I've only watched a playthrough of this game and it's just okay overall.
FF10:
- One of the worst plotlines in Video Game history.
- One of the worst Villain's in Video Game history.
- One of the worst Protagonists in FICTION
- Suffer's from "the wrong protagonist" syndrome as despite Tidus constantly saying it's his story, it's really the story about Yuna coming to terms that she may have to sacrifice herself to save the world.
Martin Steell I'm playing ff8 blind right now. But, really!? That's what's gonna happen? I thought story was cheesy but not that level
TheBlower2000 I think at the time period it was released it may not have been so bad since story wasn't as important in games, but now it really doesn't hold up at all. Both 6 and 7 hold up better though so I dont know what that says.
TyroneTiggums64 I've played a few entries in the series, and here's what I think:
1: Pretty basic, but solid.
The NES version is pretty boring imo :p Everything is so slow. The remakes on PSP and GBA are great though
