Star Wars Desert Scouts - Custom DIY Droid Scratch Build and Diorama

  • A fun DIY how to video - making a Desert Scout Droid to go with the Desert Trooper I painted a while back. This little Desert Scout Droid and his Desert Trooper friend are following the tracks of what I'm sure has something to do with Rebel Troops. And of course a few Final Faction parts!
    This is a little scratch building and a little kit bashing and inspiration from Boylei Hobby Time and his amazing work with LEDs. I ran wiring in the base of the diorama to a tea light in the head of the desert droid of a little added effect.
    I hope you enjoy this custom DIY Scratch Build!
    Thanks for visiting DR Toys, have a great one!

    This is outstanding, Dave! I especially love that it's pure scratch building. So many makers now are resorting to 3D printing to get exactly what they want, rather than using imagination and re-purposing. Your builds are something that anyone can do without specialist equipment, and that is a win in my book.

      Thank you for your kind words. Is much as I think 3D printers have a place and can do cool things for me personally there's something so rewarding about looking at a pile of recycled part and creating something with just your hands, brains and a little glue! What a rush! 😃💪
      Thanks again!

    Thank you for this awesome video!
    This project and a spaceship build recently shared on the Replica Prop Forum really opened my eyes to how I've been thinking more complicated than things sometimess really need. No need to overcomplicate things and construct boxes from styrene and the like when sometimes a piece of wood can make a perfectly fine starting point.

    • @DRToysCreations
      @DRToysCreations  2 роки тому +1

      I do have some spade bits but the tip that starts the hole drills through the other side of the base because the base is so thin. I hunted around Home Depot but didn't see anything that would work...
      Do you know of anything like a spade without the long tip? Thanks.

    • @c.harris7823
      @c.harris7823 Рік тому

      You can get a set of Forstner bits from Harbor Freight that won't break the bank. That is the type of bit to use in this case. They make a cylindrical hole to a desired depth, where as a spade bit is designed to make a hole completely through the material.

    Awesome droid and diorama Dr T!! I would never have thought to use a block of wood for a droid, but the way you customized it made it work really, really well. The panel lines and added greeblies really brought it to life and made it believable. How did you cover up the wood grain? What was that primer you used??
    Great stuff, thanks for sharing, stay safe, and keep on keeping on!!

    • @DRToysCreations

      When I'm using wood and have a really porous end grain that really soaks up paint, I'll take and wipe some slightly watered down tight bond wood glue over the end grain and let it dry, it fills and seals and stabilizes the pores enough to get a good smooth finish.
