  • Batman, the Dark Knight, has fought many villains during his years at DC Comics. From the golden age, to the silver, the bronze and beyond the Caped Crusader has amassed quite the rogues gallery. Many of these villains have been lost to time. One interesting case of this is The Monarch of Menace, dubbed by Bruce Wayne/Batman himself as the King Of Crime. This royal themed baddie actually defeated Batman, so what happened to him? We examine the history to time of recording of the Monarch of Menace here on Casually Comics!

This "Ok, I'm rich enough. Goodbye being a villain!" motif isn't done very often in comics, but when it is, it's usually done pretty well, at least in D.C. In Marvel, by contrast, some Spiderman villain tried the same thing and Peter wasn't able to find him, so he had J. Jonah call the villain a coward and shame him back out into the spotlight.

The weird statement I hear, is saying that Sovereign is trying to be The Joker for Wonder Woman, where I just don't see it. And then there's this guy and Joker. Almost seems like somebody was back-rationalizing inspiration from here as somehow being pivotal to Joker, to raise the status of the Sovereign. By the way a really uninteresting figure, to me. I can't imagine The Sovereign having been iconic, even if he debuted alongside the classic villains.
Gotta love the word "sovereign" though.
"highest, supreme, chief," from Vulgar Latin, superanus.
      That's vulgar alright.
In practice, I feel like they rebooted as WW this Fumbling Fool character, by making Sovereign a feminist message of "The patriarchy always tries to keep us down!". Never mind the fact I'm pretty sure that whole conversation is mostly about women who can't stand up to their controlling mothers, so they turn it towards a patriarchy looming generally everywhere. Can't have daddy issues living with a single mother. Like you spawned out of a lump of clay somewhee called "the patriarchy".

I'd like to see a story arc where Monarch of Menace comes back as somebody who can rival Riddler and Joker. But instead of Riddler's brains or Joker's craziness, he's successful due to his charisma. Like maybe he organizes some of Batman's lesser villains into a group that he calls his crime lords, and they pick up some surprisingly easy wins against Batman early on. Maybe playing into that, he has a civilian identity that both funds his gang and allows him to pretty easily stop Batman from catching him, so Batman has to figure that out as part of eventually stopping the Monarch.

A point I remember someone making years ago is that we'd seen the Joker, and the other main Batman Rogues so much that it becomes refreshing to see the older one offs, even if, or especially if they are still running their goofy gimmicks. This was in the period where Joker in particular was just not funny, increasingly edgy, cut off his face, burn a bus of elementary school kids without even making a "shrimps on the barbie" joke among other things. It became boring and repetitious, and someone like Monarch of Menace, be it cheesy, or more as a criminal mastermind would have felt like something fresh.
And honestly there's a lot you can do with a criminal that just does the whole "King" thing, since you can run with how you get crimelords doing stuff like buying exotic pets or tons of designer sneakers, only he's going even more into the class aspect.
There's also a lot you can do with just having this one random crook with a gimmick that got one over on Batman, and then just retired. Even without Batman himself, have the Riddler for example learn about this, and decided he's going to solve the mystery Batman couldn't. I feel like that could be an interesting story.

  • @lastsonoftennessee9895
    @lastsonoftennessee9895 17 днів тому +4

I think it would've been cool if they had brought back the Monarch's son as a vigilante. He could use some of the same theming and gadgets as his father, and you could say that he gained more competency and physical strength while in prison. But he could also struggle with self-confidence--he would wonder if he had flopped as a villain because deep down he didn't want to be one or was it just because he was a loser? And obviously he would end up having to face and try to defeat his father.
I don't know; it just seems interesting to me. And I can't think of anything really like a royalty-themed vigilante, not off the top of my head.

So he has an epiphany; to truly bring crime to heel is impossible, but he can control it. So he takes up the crown and starts at the top by taking out the Joker, thus getting everyone's attention. He quickly uses his knowledge of law enforcement and criminal operations to bring violent criminals in line while making illicit operations run smoother. Thus, crimes must be sanctioned by the king if you desire his protection. Otherwise, you may have to deal with the Bat. Thus making him a true nemesis for the Batman

Capturing Batman and then charging other criminals to hold him is kinda brilliant as a plan. I mean sure, once he gets out he's gonna punch you a lot but if you can keep him it's basically free money, and depending on how much of a public figure he is they can't exactly put out an Amber Alert for him.

The Monarch of Menace likely ended up in Arkham simply because that is where writers eventually put all Batman villains. The rest was either a lack of knowledge or a lack of concern redesigning the character to "warrant" being in Arkham. And it isn't just that he's now wearing a paper crown and speaking in Latin, note that his description is that he's "strictly a jewel thief" instead of a bank robber (first appearance) or conman/manipulator (second appearance).

It'd be cool if they brought back his son as some sort of crime fighter. I'm not sure about the laws concerning reformed criminals becoming police, especially in DC/Gotham... and I honestly think it would be better if he was a cop or private investigator (if he can't legally be a cop), rather than a vigilante. Too much of a bumbling oaf to be effective, especially in Gotham... but maybe his brain is at least somewhat useful, he just lacks coordination basically? So then he could pretty good at investigation.
Only downside is, he's basically just be a complete and utter downgrade of Spoiler? Like, Steph became Spoiler to ruin her father's criminal plans, and is a good vigilante/hero with a good brain lol. She's quite competent. So why would we want a mostly incompetent dude who became some sort of crime fighter to spite HIS father? Especially if a vigilante, and double especially if mostly incompetent aside from some intelligence? But that's why I think he could be a decent addition to the police force if legal. Gordon could always use another trustworthy cop that isn't an idiot. Especially for stuff that doesn't require much dexterity, like cordoning off crime scenes and keeping crowds at bay and stuff, rather than fighting. And it would basically just be a cool Easter egg. Could basically be the new guy on the force, get a little backstory and editor's note briefly explaining who he is and calling back to his first appearance... and then in future issues it could just be like Gordon shouting orders like, "Bullock, Montoya, get witness statements." Etc. (I already forgot his name, if it was even given so I just stopped at the 2 names I remember lmao)

I thought you described Lucius Accius as a "neurotic poet" (at 20:41), which puzzled me just for a moment! In the meantime, this is another great look back at a forgotten Bat-villain I didn't know, but who appears to be an interesting & worthwhile character. As an older guy who collected Silver & Bronze age comics at the time of publication, I missed out on tons of obscure or little used villains. Your enjoyment of so many "new" old stories is informative & appreciated!

It could be a great pathos for Batman to have failed and maybe when Batman meets the people who were robbed he feels shame, and cant' look them in the eye. Even though it was just money, he still hates the thought of letting the person down.

As I got older I started seeking out the superhero comics and this was actually the second comic I ever owned. In fact, I may still have that issue! To this day I have no idea where Batman was and I know it had nothing to do with the Monarch, I was kinda hoping you'd let us know. It was a great issue though and I've always wondered if this was a one off villian, thanks for clearing this up!

Maybe a revised Monarch of Menace could have the "Jester", be the actual mastermind, who uses a mask of unimportance to arrange seemingly mundane things to make the Monarch's rule easier. Kinda like how a cake from grandma ends up being a useful jailbreaking device. For example, the Jester making mocking commentary that the Monarch acts upon, as the comments are actually orders or advice.

Monarch showing up in Gotham as a nobody, and using 1 successful heist, rising in the ranks overnight, could make for a good start to a Batman story. He can be goofy with that cape and crown, and his subjects. Think about it: no other villain has their subjects act like literal Medieval Serfs, but they're just Gotham crooks. It could really work, but he is in the Penguin's category of "business villain."

I either had no idea he ever returned or just saw the cover/flipped through (Superboy, JLA, LSH, Avengers or Team America must've been on the stands that week) and forgot about it all these decades later. Glad to see they did him justice (but then Roy Thomas can always be counted on). Thanks the video.
