Made the mistake of watching how sundae cups are made while I'm supposed to be sleeping. Now I'm seriously considering pros and cons of getting back up, getting dressed, driving 28 miles in a blizzard.

I remember as a kid when my parents would take me to Friendly's for ice cream. Horrible service, but great ice cream sundaes. I miss them. These are not the same.

Am I the only one annoyed with how the chocolate syrup dispenser spills a bit of syrup onto the side of each cup, and onto the machinery too? That must annoying to clean. Surely there has got to be a way to make the dispenser more precise?
Well, spilled or not, they need to clean the machines regularly.
increase the waiting time so that the drip would land on a cup itself not on the edges while traveling through the conveyor belt. This was bumming me out too

Having worked in a couple of food manufacturing plants I can tell you the timing is slightly off there. Depending on how it's set up it may require the line to be stopped to adjust it and that won't happen until they're throwing more money onto the floor than they are into the cup.
I'm sure the cleaning process is automated the same way the production is :)

Kinda neat to see how it all comes together, I grew up near this factory and knew of a few people that worked there.
For me this "How it's made" is one of the best recommendations on youtube.
Me over 10+ yrs ago, awake at 11 pm, a bowl of cereal half touched and just staring at the tv while my mom bakes midnight cookies and my dad brushing my hair for bed time and munching on m&m's secretly so I don't "see" and ask for some.

I’m very curious about the story behind this
There are several towns claiming to be the “birthplace of the Sundae.” (Apparently there’s a huge fight between a town in Wisconsin and Ithaca, NY over this.)
Evanston, IL is the one referenced here: a blue law against selling ice cream sodas on Sundays was passed in 1890. So the local shops obeyed the law, and served ice cream with the syrup of your choice without the soda but only on Sundays. (Making it legal) The “sodaless soda” was the “Sunday soda." As sales of the dessert got so popular , they started selling “Sunday sodas” on Mondays too, prompting objections from the church leaders to naming the dish after the Sabbath. So the “Sundae” was born.

@@tidepodpadthai2633 in most places blue laws were put in place so that people went to church on Sunday, at least in the morning. They kept stores closed until noon and banned the sale of alcohol until at least noon. I guess the no ice cream and soda thing was to get the younger people to go to church. They are Christian morality laws in a country that’s not supposed to have any official religion. 🤷♂️
Ice cream sundaes are the direct result of Blue Laws, which are religious laws in the United States that restrict activities that could be considered sinful. One example of a Blue Law is the ban on the sale of liquor in certain places on Sundays. In the late 1800s, there was another Blue Law on the books that made it illegal to sell soda on Sunday. Some religious groups were against what they called “sucking sodas” and felt that this activity should be banned on the Sabbath.
This ban on Sunday soda sales was a big problem for anyone that enjoyed root beer floats or other ice cream sodas. At the time, pharmacists (called druggists in those days) were doing a booming business in ice cream sodas at their pharmacy counters. They needed another way to sell ice cream to their customers on hot Sunday afternoons. Their solution was to replace the soda with chocolate sauce, a move that made everyone happy-ice cream lovers, druggists, and those that disapproved of soda.
When I was a kid we had a whole set of ridiculous "blue laws" that regulated sunday behavior. Most stores were closed, a lot of products could not be sold. It was the meddlesome churches, of course. Luckily we finally moved beyond most of those laws, but there are many that still want to bring them back. 😎
Damn I'd eat all of those sundaes if I was hired to work at that factory. I'd probably get 2 or 3 days in before I was let go.
It's interesting o see these sundaes being made, especially since I've had these before, specifically from the brand.

I used to eat these all the time at my moms house back in the early 2000s. She would get them for me and I would love to eat them when I was stoned.

Man, all the Friendly’s around me are gone. I miss going there, I have so many good memories of going there with my parents and friends. Especially the few times my parents let me stay home from school when I was having a really hard time, and would take me to Friendly’s to treat ourselves with their sundaes.

VIDEOHEREBOB For cheapness, natural vanilla by itself is super expensive. They use vanillin which is the main flavor in real vanilla but they make vanillin in a lab.
Real vanilla also is terrible for the environment, because growing it causes farmers (for example in Madagascar) to destroy rainforest. So it's actually a lot better to eat fake vanilla.
At least they aren’t using castoreum. Vanilla flavor made from beavers castor sacs. It’s food safe albeit a bit gross. But usage is super duper low in modern times. I suppose it would be natural flavoring though
Artificial flavoring is cheaper than the real thing.

This is interesting because over here in Australia, sundaes cannot be bought in grocery stores, you can only buy them at ice cream shops, so they're always fancy and handmade here!

i used to buy friendly's vanilla ice cream tubs and mix it with a&w root-beer to make awesome root-beer floats...
you just know the foreman went all out on deep cleaning weeks before the cams showed up
