I’d like to be the first one to comment on this. I like your classic taste and I’ve been watching your videos for quite a while. Keep up the good work. Enjoy your watches in good health.
Hey Ameer, thanks man! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill. Commentators tend to knock the Cellini, but I would never say no. And the JLC Geophysic Worldtimer looks to be an impressive watch.
Tuna, some commentators just go with whatever is popular in a brand; Cellini's are not. Who wants to follow the herd anyway? Not I. Take care, Bill
Tuna, too many commentators rely on a watch's popularity; not horology. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci I totally agree with you Bill. But being an everyday dress watch wearer, the Rolex Cellini range always struck me as being the most interesting line of watches that they have to offer. All the best.
The JLC Geophysic and Moser are pretty special. The Montblanc is amazing value. The Zulu Time is actually pretty amazing too considering how cheap it is.
I'm always thinking which watch would I dare to take with me with these travel type of watches.
Olli, I've got my Parmigiani Hemispheres...so I'm all set! Take care, Bill
Hi Bill, the Patek Philippe 5330G World Time has also a silicone balance spring like all Patek's today. Patek names it Spiromax, it's made from Silinvar, a material based on Monocrystalline Silicon.
Obud, I'm not certain that it does. Check out the listing and there's no silicon in the listing. The 240 HU does have silicon but not the 240 HU C. (I believe...). Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci Hi Bill, the information is on the Patek website, go to 5330G and just open instruction for use, and you will see that the 240HU and 240 HU-C have a Spiromax balance. static.patek.com/pdf/instructionsforuse/PatekPhilippe_P2445_Calibre_240_HU_240_HU_C_v9.pdf
Hi Bill, I was lucky enough to pick up a Schwarz Etienne Roma Power Reserve in steel this month for only CHF 3'500. I'm very happy with it! I have been very close to pull the trigger on the Rolex Cellini Danaos many times - so far I haven't. Thank you so much for all your informative videos - these are the highlights of my week!
Wow! You got a great price on the SE! And with dual barrels in parallel! Top buy Monsieur de Chanel! Take care, Bill
I like that LUC XPS beautiful Calatrava alternative. The Moser Dual Time is a fabulous watch as well, definitely would be my choice. Thanks Bill.
I like those as well, but my favorite aside from the Moser is the Swartz Etienne with the dual barrels in parallel, Abdul. Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci That Schwarz Etienne is a beauty 👍🏽
Wow, those Chopards are really something else. It's going to likely be between Chopard, Vacheron, or H Moser for my next watch given that I recently struck out on a Lang and Heyne deal.
Well, Killer, you have 3 great choices! Take care, Bill
Great video Bill. I really enjoy these alternative videos. My three favorites are the L.U. Chopard (steel), the Schwarz Etienne (steel) and the H. Moser.
Best regards, Brian
Those are fine choices, Brian, and I would add the JLC world timer. Take care, Bill
The picture you had of the Montblanc Heritage Spirit was actually upside down. The crown is at the 3 o'clock and the pusher would be at like the 8 o'clock.
I know Jones...had a mirror image. My bad. Take care, Bill
I wonder why Chopard is so under the radar. They certainly have my recent attention and I am amazed at how much watch value they offer. They are also small and nimble enough to make some very interesting and creative timepieces. I love my 6119R, but there is always room for a…….
I don't know Michael. They're not known for a lot of creativity, but they have nice watches. Take care, Bill
On Patek double denim: "I'm not sure why they'd do that..." Bill speaks for the community! As another, how about the Parmigiani Tonda instead of the Nautilus? Classier, with a better movement!
You'll get no arguments from me James! Take care, Bill
Hello Bill, excellent alternative choices. I can recommend the Rolex Sky-Dweller in stainless steel it would be a less expensive choice if purchased from an authorized dealer.
Hey Dom, the Sky-Dweller has some seriously interesting horology in it. Great idea! Take care, Bill
Great vid! The Montblanc is not a lefty but you have it upside down;)
You're right! Bad picture. Take care, Bill
I really enjoyed this video, Bill. Thank you! The Patek and JLC world timers are special. I also love that Moser dual time. The Calatrava and its alternatives are not to my personal style, but I can certainly appreciate them, especially the Schwarz Etienne with that power reserve indicator. On that note, another to consider might be the Nomos Lambda in rose gold, with its great big 84-hour power reserve indicator. That Lambda movement is stunning. Cheers!
Ooooh Andrew, Love the Lambda! Favorite Nomos.Take care, Bill
@@watchartsciIndeed! I also almost mentioned Paul Gerber, as he created a couple exquisite watches that’d make for stellar - errr, far better:) -alternatives to the Calatrava. I think one is called the Retro Twin? In any case, I then remembered that one would be hard-pressed to find them! As for me, I’m still on the hunt for one of his old triple-rotor Synchrons with the green numerals and big date.
Thank you, as always, Bill. Your channel is outstanding, and I love to learn from/with you!
@@andrewtruman2011 My pleasure Andrew.
The Chopard Classique 1168 is a great alternative for a Calatrava. It uses a manualwind JLC movement, solid gold case, solid gold indexes and has a similarly clean dial design. Usually sell around 3 to 4000 usd pre owned.
Thanks for the info, HRM! A hand wound is always preferred (by me) over automatics. Take care, Bill
Excellent comparison topic .
Hey Ziperian, thanks man! Take care, Bill
Can you find out what vintage model watch has the Federick Piguet P21 movement? I only know Longines has it as the Cal. 310. Also find out the Federick Piguet P71 with the offset rotor. I know Corum has a model with it and other companies as well. I have been looking for vintage watches with these movements.
That quest will be your's Enrique! You find out and let the rest of us know-it's an exercise in becoming a better collector! Take care, Bill
Was looking at that Cellini, but I got to have a seconds hand .
I can see why...how do you know your watch is running without a second hand and a solid casebook, David? Take care, Bill
Have you done a bit on those silicone mainspring, pro's con's ?. And you've mentioned other materials when chatting about Rolex, parachrome,? Go on Bill Sir, .
Here you go David: ua-cam.com/video/-Z7zc33SzGY/v-deo.htmlsi=PTHe56UePzbKuAfp Take care, Bill
Always a pleasure Bill, Im kinda looking for a calatrava alternative for my brother so this was very informative. btw that Longines gmt is a bit thicc
My Longines is a bit thick, James, but it's full of good horology! Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci my longines target is the Ultrachron diver......
I like all of the alternatives, thank you Bill for another wonderful educational watch class. I have the Patek 5524 pilot travel time. I love the readability and lume. Should I sell my JLC Duometre Lunaire in the black dial? Limited to 200 pieces, in white gold? Thank you.
Thomas, I love the Duometre! That's a real piece of fine horology. Take care, Bill
Thank you Bill. I’ll probably keep it since it’s very unique and very high horology and it’s massively underrated. I purchased it used 2 to 3 years ago.
Great video and great alternatives!! What do you think about the NOMOS ZÜRICH WORLD TIME as another potential candidate? Nomos watches are not generally my favorite but that is definitely one of my favorite I have seen from them, especially with the midnight blue dial.
Hey Flip, the NOMOS is an excellent alternative WT! Take care, Bill
Hey Bill, l love Moser but I’d maybe go Hermes slim d’Hermes GMT. Cant beat the LUC. Regards, Ed
Ed...are you sure you've made up your mind? Take care, Bill
I don’t like the typeface of the numerals. It’s like you and silicon. Hermes have unique typeface plus I like their second time zone layout.
A Dornbluth & Sohn Quintus would strongly challenge the Calatrava. It has the Geneva Stop Work Maltese Cross mechanism in it..
Any watch without a silicon hairspring would Mark! Take care, Bill
The Cellini watches were massively unloved in the marketplace but they are just wonderful examples of watchmaking. From a collecting standpoint, the wallflowers of today will sometimes become tomorrow’s bell of the ball as people gain an appreciation over the course of time for various references as is the case with the various iterations of the Cellini Prince. I would not walk 10 feet to look at a non-vintage Rolex but I find the Cellini references to be very interesting watches worth going out of one’s way to learn about including the Danaos which comes in a great variety of permutations including including beautiful back and rose gold dials of some aesthetic complexity that should knock a lot of socks off in contrast to more sedate Holy Trinity offerings like the Calatrava and Patrimony.
You feel that way Howard because you have class and taste. There's nothing you can do about it no matter how hard you try.Take care, Bill
@@watchartsci You are very kind but you have given me the kind of accolade that the writers of the Duffy’s Tavern radio show would often bestow on the Manager Archie (played by Ed Gardner) who was quite the boob. I thank you from the bottom of my boobish heart.
do you have a website to purchase watches
No I do not Robert. However, I am part of the Lyrique Group and we pool together to have bespoke watches made for us. (Lyrique.ch). Take care, Bill
forest green is bbbbeautiful
I agree Waffler! Take care, Bill
greeting ser. Please i am a young man that loves watch. I want to build my own brand watch. Please any body or company you can advice me. Please.
Hi Yannick. Here's someone who will help you develop your own watch brand: www.developyourwatch.ch Take care, Bill
Calatrava would be my grail peace if it wasn’t so associated with a crusader mission that renamed a Moorish castle. In the context of recent imperial aggressions against Libya, Iraq, Yemen …etc. the crusader motif has lost its nobility.
L.U.C. would be my pick for something super classic … still comes in 36.5 too.
The whole watchmaking business in Geneva stemmed from the Wars of Religion between the Catholics & Protestants in France.... the Crusades was from another era. Check this out, Sovnarkom, and let me know what you think: ua-cam.com/video/J6X0yu5wTes/v-deo.htmlsi=I-ttH8owy8l5VuLa Take care, Bill
I’d rather have a Laurent ferrier than any PATEK at this point.
Same here Ivan...in fact at most points. Take care, Bill
