  • For the first decade of the 21st Century, Patek Philippe made watches with hairsprings of transitional metals. They switched to silicon and lost the "Geneva Seal." In examining these "pure" Patek Philippe watch from 2000 to 2010 we can find some deals financially and in horology.

    Im a big fan of Patek's 70s and 80s ultra thin models. They offer incredible value for money

      I agree HRM, and my only reservation is the dial size-a tad small for me. Take care, Bill

    On that Calendario I think that little hand over the moon phase must be a 24 hour dial.
    Merry Xmas, Bill!

      Yes, it’s a 24 hour dial. Tim Mosso suggests it is there to enable you to avoid operating the pushers while the date is engaging to change.

      That was my thought too CT, but there was no mention of a DTZ; so I wasn't sure. Thanks for the clarification .Merry Christmas to you! Bill. 🎅

    Great video. I was pleased to see the 5111 in your selection. It is indeed a very neat watch and a highly underrated one. I own three PP watches, all of them being Geneva Seal watches. I have a 5110R a 5396G sector dial and a 5111G. I can assure you that the Gondolo 5111 puts a smile on my face every time I wear it. I am originally from Brazil so I may be biased towards the Gondolo collection history tracking back to Rio de Janeiro.

      Hi Marco! Yes, it was a shame to see that Patek gave up on traditional horology and used silicon instead and then dropped their most interesting watches-the Gondolo line. You're not biased; just that Patek is clueless. Take care, Bill

    Thanks for the explanation of your views on silicon hairsprings, Bill. A well-balanced opinion! I love the 5135. Hoping I’ll get one some day. Those manual movements are beautiful and perfect for dress watches. I can see the benefit of self-winding for a calendar, though.

      Hi Nigel, I like hand-wound watches as a reminder that our fun is in the hobby of watch collection, and I prefer not have anything too "practical" in that sense. Take care, Bill

    Interesting topic Bill. I know nothing about PP and have never considered them. The Philippe Gondolo is my favorite of the bunch. I'm a sucker for a beautiful shaped movement.
    Best regards, Brian

      Hi Bryan, Patek was once a trusted and wonderful watchmaker-at least until 2009! Then the Dark Side beckoned and they slid down the easy slope of silicon... The 5124 Art Deco model with a Geneva Seal is always tempting! Take care, Bill

    Merry Xmas Bill. I have always been fond of the Ellipse. It does seem a shame though, that a prestigious brand like Patek should abandon their watchmaking traditions, and a large part of why they sell for such a premium. Then again, we now have an electric Rolls Royce lol. Progress they say. Well, poppycock to that.

    When you said 'transitional' metals I presume you meant traditional metals? 😉 I really like the oval Gondolo. Merry Christmas Bill!

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 місяців тому +2

      No Lex, I meant "transitional" metals. In the periodic table of elements, "transitional metals" are differentiated from "metalloids" which includes silicon (...as well as arsenic...).- pubchem.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/periodic-table/ . I'm delighted to find someone other than myself finding the oval Gondolo ... maybe one of these days we'll both get one. Merry Christmas to you! Bill. 🎅

    Bill, I have looked at the patek gondolo 5124 that you referenced soooo many times - great watch. I really want an art deco styled watch in my collection and I just don't know which one to choose among the brands I'm considering... Have you ever thought of opening up a consulting business to help us indecisive watch collectors make decisions?? :). Pre-silicon era Cartier and Breguet are two other brands I tend to want but the research can get confusing... All the best!

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  7 місяців тому +1

      Hi Paul, I would be the worst person to do consulting on watches! It would be like asking a 5-year old to consult on ice cream! However, I do like the 5124 in the Art Deco style with the salmon dial. Decisions, decisions... Take care, Bill

    The whole Geneva seal thing seems a little silly, they allowed it on Pateks quartz watches but not for a silicon hairspring?

    • @watchartsci
      @watchartsci  2 місяці тому
