JTSX1 Never go lower. that actually makes the vehicle work harder than intended making it inefficient to the point that you're wasting money more than if you just stayed with premium
I have yet to go lower. The dealer told me it will run safely on any octane, though I have yet to verify in the owner's manual and gas prices aren't an issue right now. Ford has it's flex fuel and GM has a similar feature and I'm sure Toyota has the same.
JTSX1 Don't listen to dealer. Nobody knows your Lexus more than Lexus/Toyota so just go by owner's manual. It may not show any problems at first when you go lower but the effects will slowly show then hit hard in the future. Plus, going lower only makes your engine work harder and decrease mpg making fuel cost even more.
Now the reason why this GX performs so well off-road is because in other world markets, this vehicle is sold as the Toyota Prado. The Prado is very rugged, tough, and reliable, much like the GX. Basically, the Prado and the GX are really like brothers.
Can someone explain me in the most understandable way of what is torque and power? I already researched about it but i can't really get the whole picture. Sorry for being slow but will someone delight me? Thank u very much. :)
think of it this way: torch is the amount of times the big metal rod underneath the truck spins on it self for a tire to rotate one time completely. the bigger the number the more rotation time meaning more torque and less top speed got it?
I have to laugh when I see those MPG numbers. Back in the day my 2003 Ford Excursion was vilified as a terrible gas guzzler and the target of environmental protesters. I still get the same MPGs in my diesel Excursion today as this Lexus, I have more cargo/passenger space, I can tow a lot more, and has more torque. I'm sure it won't come close to the same overall miles in the life of the vehicle either. My Excursion is at 240k miles and I plan to keep it for years.
The only difference is that while you drive your piece of rubbish another guy driving this Lexus will stop besides you and laugh his ass off while watching your poor people car 😂😂
It’s sold as the Toyota Prado in other countries. That’s why it’s good off road and built like a tank. I personally would rather have the Prado (with the available Diesel engine).
I quit buying sedan-based truck suspensions after the odyssey... much too horrendous on the street, makes me confused why people buy the X5 really. I run my gx470 in sport mode because the"regular suv" suspension mode is garbage. I have KDSS too which was developed by Toyota for the track originally. I believe the GX is better on road than any other SUV money can buy. my only gripe with the car is the pesky factory speed limiter at 110... like really?? cmon Toyota, stop selling yourself so short.
I got to test drive this thing and I really loved the steering because they were so easy to steer but hated the seats. They were so uncomfortable. Also this thing felt like it had 4 cylinder engine instead of 8 because it really lacked power.
This Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460 are the same SUV with some cosmetic difference's + Engine Choices. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado comes with the 6 Engine Options. Like: 1. 6 Speed Automatic If Compare both Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460 exterior design then the difference's will be front Grill & Headlight. Lexus GX460 has more agreesive design while compared to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado. Although Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460 offers Same Engine, Chassis, Gearbox etc. The Interior difference is that the centre console, dashboard and other gadge clusters look's quite different from the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460. From all of my opinion's I will definitely say that Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460 is a 4 Wheel Drive Mid-size Luxurious SUV. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is quiet common SUV in Bangladesh. Not only common but also quiet Popular and Expensive SUV in Bangladesh. But Lexus GX460 is the most rare SUV in Bangladesh. The Price Range of 4th Generation 2nd Facelift Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is about U.S. $ 96,000 and while the Price Range of the 4th Generation 3rd Facelift 3017 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado is about U.S. $ 143,000. Thanks!
I wish Lexus would focus this SUV more for road driving.. Really, they made it too geared to off-road driving and in doing so, it makes it not as nice on the road as it could be. Or better yet, make this version and then make another GX 460 "road" version for road driving. I bet that the people who buy this use it 97% of the time on the road - not driving thru the jungle.
Funny how you guys complain about the lack of power with those 300hp; in Europe we get it with a 190hp Diesel engine (as in the Land Cruiser Prado) and it sells wonderfully
You need low down torque in a heavy vehicle not a more peaky engine with hp at high rpm, 300hp is a lot of power for the type of vehicle and the intended use.
@@vimejiasve The Highlander is based on a Camry, platform and is a FWD design with power sent to the rear if the AWD version. This is based on the Toyota Prado which has a separate frame/chassis with a solid rear axle much more akin to a truck than a car like the Highlander.
I'm still talking to myself at how absmimal those engine output numbers are. Their 3.5L V6 is better but is down only 40lb ft vs this V8. I just don't see how they only get 300 300 out of a 4.6L V8.
***** incorrect, they tuned this to have more torque lower in the rpm band. Nothing to do with reliability. Look at the chevy small block. It is rock solid in reliability and puts out 50% more power. Its because Toyota has no engineers. They lost them all after the 90's. I mean they just came out with a turbo engine and its so overly complicated and underpowered. They are already having problems with it.
Hey Craig you look like Steve Roger's before the captain America experiment. you should bulk up! (seriously thought I really like you, your the best reviewer at autoguide. I just think it would be awesome to see a guy like you get captain America big)
BMW X5 lol. I’ll take the GX over X5 any day. Even in the 4.8i trim the X5 interiors were junk, snap on plastic trim fell off and plastic film that’s used on the steering peels off after a few years, good only for use as a strip mall shopping cart.
The live rear axle is fantastic, IMO, if you are planning on doing a lot of miles, owning the vehicle for a long time, off roading or towing. Stronger and simpler versus an independent rear with drive shaft boots to get ripped and fall apart with age. The down side is more unsprung weight and its affect on handling, all of which are pretty negligible on this type of vehicle.
J High more room for wheel travel it's why the wheel well is desinged so big that it dwarfs the wheel size. Also notice how the wheel well is squared off instead round? That also gives more room for wheel travel when serious off roading.
It is not the same as a real 4WD vehicle like the 4Runner that has 4Low and more for off road.. you take that piece of shit off the road you better have backup to pull it out.

It’s sold as the Toyota Prado in other countries. That’s why it’s good off road and built like a tank. I personally would rather have the Prado (with the available Diesel engine).
Has anyone else notice he has his note right in front of him! You can see them at 5:47!
The air suspension on this thing will probably outlive cars made two years down the road 😂
Lacked power compared to what?
This Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460 are the same SUV with some cosmetic difference's + Engine Choices. Toyota Land Cruiser Prado comes with the 6 Engine Options. Like:
1. 2.7 Litre Petrol
2. 2.8 Litre Diesel
3. 3.0 Litre Diesel
4. 3.0 Litre Diesel
5. 3.5 Litre Petrol (China)
6. 4.0 Litre Petrol
It does comes with the 5 Transmission's Options. Like:
1. 4 Speed Automatic
2. 5 Speed Automatic
3. 6 Speed Automatic
4. 5 Speed Manual
5. 6 Speed Manual
While the Lexus GX460 Comes with the 2 Engine Options. Like:
1. 4.0 Litre Petrol.
2. 4.6 Litre Petrol
It does comes with only 1 Transmission Options. Like:
1. 6 Speed Automatic
If Compare both Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and Lexus GX460 exterior design then the difference's will be front Grill & Headlight. $ 143,000. Thanks!
Can you do the Lexus Lx 570
Is there a locker on here?
Dude looks like Gothams the riddler
I wish Lexus would focus this SUV more for road driving.. Really, they made it too geared to off-road driving and in doing so, it makes it not as nice on the road as it could be. Or better yet, make this version and then make another GX 460 "road" version for road driving. I bet that the people who buy this use it 97% of the time on the road - not driving thru the jungle.
So true. And make mpg to a better number
should I get one of these or an xc90?
Depends on what's important. If it's reliability and off road capability, go with the GX. I'm sure the XC90 gets better gas mileage.
Xc90 save you 1500 dollars per year on gas consumption. In south California
Great job! Trying to choose between another Toyota 4Runner SR5 or the Lexus GX 460, this was very informative.
Let's hear for everybody who is feeling the pain of $5 to $7 a gallon gas but this SUV.
Wait, didn't the GX have the 5.7 liter last year?
LX
DUDE! It’s Rod Rosenstein doing a car review!!!
Funny how you guys complain about the lack of power with those 300hp; in Europe we get it with a 190hp Diesel engine (as in the Land Cruiser Prado) and it sells wonderfully
Do the gs 200t review
My only complaint is the back tail light, they looks so cheap and aftermarket.
do dash board correcred not crack any more
4.6 L and 301 horse power ?
I was expecting at least 365 hp
You need low down torque in a heavy vehicle not a more peaky engine with hp at high rpm, 300hp is a lot of power for the type of vehicle and the intended use.
Lexus LX next?
Is this based on the Toyota Highlander..?
toyota prado
Toyota prado gx460 and 4 runner, have same base
Carpediem06 Noooooo Highlander is a car base SUV
Tony, Toyota has had a 2 liter turbo from at least 1990, 2nd gen mr2 and celica all trac both came with a 2 liter turbo...3sgte
What's a Range Rover LR4?
5:14 I've noticed that problem in a lot of cars. I guess they don't want drivers to sit too closely to the wheel during an airbag deployment.
Dear Craig, thank you for reviewing this car. it will for sure help me in making my decision on a final Purchase!
wait so am i going to get 15 and 20 mpg in the city lol
It seems to me that's just a Land Cruiser Prado with a $60K+ value, different front end and improved leather interior.
Sounds like enuff, for me😁
Omrtbsh
And different engine.
2:45 15 mpg city 20 mpg city 17 mpg combined....
Aka the Land Cruiser Prado.
Yes the Dodge Nitro was so popular and well regarded it was retired to the automotive hall of fame.
Hey Craig you look like Steve Roger's before the captain America experiment. you should bulk up! (seriously thought I really like you, your the best reviewer at autoguide. I just think it would be awesome to see a guy like you get captain America big)
is this car really a Crossover..? From what really...
It is not a crossover. It’s a body on frame SUV
Did u visit a hospital while you were making this video? Or why that braces on yr right hand? :-)
That low grill bothers the hell out of me. looks like a gas guzzling city cruiser.
In Europe it's a regular Toyota .. I'll wait till it's redesign
...did you say range rover lr4?
Are you the Riddler ?
Its just a nicer prado for the aussies out there
Great so nomone would drive this off road at least you know you would be comfy on bad street roads woth big bumps
BMW X5 lol. I’ll take the GX over X5 any day. Even in the 4.8i trim the X5 interiors were junk, snap on plastic trim fell off and plastic film that’s used on the steering peels off after a few years, good only for use as a strip mall shopping cart.
Nice car
love this truck
A more plush Toyota Land Cruiser Pardo.
the life rear axle is bad imho.
The live rear axle is fantastic, IMO, if you are planning on doing a lot of miles, owning the vehicle for a long time, off roading or towing. Stronger and simpler versus an independent rear with drive shaft boots to get ripped and fall apart with age. The down side is more unsprung weight and its affect on handling, all of which are pretty negligible on this type of vehicle.
looks like up scale Prado.
it IS an upscale prado
Those wheels alway seem to small in my opinion. They don't fill out the wheel well.
J High more room for wheel travel it's why the wheel well is desinged so big that it dwarfs the wheel size. Also notice how the wheel well is squared off instead round? That also gives more room for wheel travel when serious off roading.
I love it
Range Rover LR4? Really?
So it's not good at where it is going to spent most of its life.
why they still making this.
Not a crossover.
dinoshavbabies definitely not a crossover
holly shit !!! did you just say Reliable Range Rover L4 !! since when Range Rover or Land Rovers are Reliable vehicles !!!
No, he said the GX is similar to the LR4, with the exception that the GX is reliable and the LR4 is not.
Lathan Starnes i didn't catch this one but thanks man :)
v8 with only 300hp not good
i know acura has v6 that has well above 300 hp
Its real truck engine - more tq than hp, acuras are car based engines.
I cruise around in mine and it never goes over 2k rpm. They use a 3.90 gear ratio with a six speed transmission. It moves and pulls nicely
hp is overrated.
Trucks are known for torque not HP, u want hp go get a sport car
Pound the stuffing out of that job!
I wish I could LOVE this comment, but UA-cam only allows a thumbs up.
300 horsepower is pretty pathetic for a V8.
To be fair the car is quite old underneath
its old school SUV, real SUV must be body on frame
old tech = dead reliable
It is not the same as a real 4WD vehicle like the 4Runner that has 4Low and more for off road.. you take that piece of shit off the road you better have backup to pull it out.
Это же крузак
I'd buy it if it didn't have that awful grille. I can't look at my truck and hate it. So ugly.
tros rock
