I just bought a 2014 lexus gx 460 luxury trim package, at 136,000 miles and I am totally IN LOVE. it is an incredible vehicle and drives like butter on a hot pan. At 10 years old, it looks and drives like a new vehicle.
this gentleman’s presentation is the most detailed or informative video presentation considering all others in the UA-cam market.. I give him 9/10 rating..
Purchased the luxury trim and I'm very happy with this vehicle. Your review was very accurate. Comfort, luxury, tow and off-road capabilities and great customer service in one package. Thanks Alex for your honest review.
@@crunchyblack2224 Hi, so sorry I missed some questions before. I still own my GX 460 and glad I got it brand new 5 years ago. I have no issue at all of any source with this vehicle. I still love the driving experience. I put about 95K on it and only changed fluid as per the factory maintenence book. Front brakes are still good, only rear brakes need replacement soon. Other than that, not mechanical or software issue. My vehicle still looks like and drive like new. I took it once off route and it is a lot of fun being able to see it capabilities. I towed a few times and I dont feel I have a load because of its towing features and torque. I recommend this vehicle because it is a keeper but it is unique among the competition. My decision was based on cabin quietness, which I still love and towing capability being a lexury vehicle, and reliability. There is not a lexury vehicle in the market with this features combination; simple and functional.
Excellent review. My girl and I are having our first child, we're now on the market for preowned, safe SUV. Your review is the absolute best one I've seen for the GX460, thank you.
I have watched a few videos on UA-cam on GX 460. This is by far the most comprehensive, honest and to the point review. The difference between body on frame and other was top notch. Thank you .
Excellent review Alex. Based on your review, I went to purchased the new 2015 Lexus GX 460 premium. Excellent driving vehicle. I had previously considered the MDX but chose the GX 460 instead due to a better off road capability. People who buys SUV now a day must realize there is a different between the many new crossover SUVs( I call them fake SUV) vs. traditional body on frame SUV. The crossover are built like a sedan in a SUV body. They are great handling vehicle on the road with great mileage as you would expect from a sedan. Take them off road and you have a problem. The traditional body on frame SUV, on the other hand, are built rugged tough, high clearance, off road capability, high towing capacity, and can take a beating but they are not the best handling vehicle and tends to have lower gas mileage over all. To compare a MDX, Audi Q7, or BMW X5 to the Lexus GX 460 is like comparing apple to oranges. They are totally different vehicles that serve different needs. I agree that the only other luxury SUV vehicle that is comparable to the GX 460 is the Lange Rover LR4. Except cost and other minor features, they are very similar. Keep the reviews coming Alex. Great Job!
Alex. Your review is spot on in all points you mention. I've owned my 2016 GX Luxury for almost 7 months. Its a very nice car, yet I find it to be utilitarian in some regards. And that's not a bad thing for my use. I wanted Toyota/Lexus reliability, with Land Cruiser ruggedness. I've heard it said by many that this is a Toyota 4Runner with a Lexus badge. It is not,, I've owned 4Runner and this is so much a different vehicle. It is exactly as you phrased it, Cousin to the 4Runner, Brother to the Land Cruiser. Excellent review on a great car.
Everything from Toyota is designed to be as functional as possible as simply as possible. They refuse to cater to the market's childlike fascination with shiny gadgets. I have so much respect for the executives making these decisions. I want to awkwardly move to shake their hands before remembering to bow.
Jack Tran A friend of mine has a GX. After riding in it I was so impressed with the quality I would love to have one. That was 5 years ago. I still might buy one but would have to break the oath I took to never buy another used vehicle. No way could I afford a new one, I wouldn’t be afraid to risk a used GX.
@@steveprinty5674 Same here! I didn't wanna buy a used car anymore because of frequent mechanic ripoffs!, but now I'm thinking to have one of these GX and can't afford a new one lol even though i heard it had tendency to rollover incase of emergency sharp turn stop which really scares me because I survived a multiple rollover major accident! Can't even imagine such horrific rollovers
A. Muhammad I guess vehicles with good ground clearance are going to be more susceptible to a rollover than Honda Accords in which you feel like you are almost sitting on the ground. However here’s another thing to consider: my ‘96 Suburban got rear ended 15 years ago by a careless driver of a Hyundai. I still have the Suburban. The other guy had to pay for my new rear bumper, and get himself a new car. Hopefully your personal experience in a rollover will make you a better safer driver. Good luck finding the right GX. 👍🏻
I just purchased a 2019 gx 460 with 61k miles , by far the nicest vehice ive ever driven The premium package is perfect for me. Its really a step up for me from a honda crv. I dont think ill be driving that old 08 pilot as much either...
Finally a reviewer who nailed down the fact that this is a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado with a Lexus badge! So tired of the misconception that this is a Lexus badged over 4Runner. Beast off roader respected worldwide. Good night Jeep fans.
We have a Lexus GX460 and added a Wrangler 4XE for fuel efficiency. The Wrangler is a more road friendly Sahara model but the Lexus GX is a better off roader than the Wrangler.
Great job! I bought one a year ago. Didn’t know diddly about it. Set out to kentucky to fetch a land crusher Came home w a Lexus GX. Your explanations help me see WHY the vehicle exists. One thing I adhere to that you didn’t mention. Weight. Massive weight . 5000 pounds . Gotta be more metal around you than a Subaru
Excellent presentation. Professional, direct and did so without putting down other competitors. Just the facts. I like the format and off the cuff cross specs knowledge of other vehicles. Save me time researching. Keep up the good work. Subscribed. Q: Does the second row lay flat complimenting the third row which does? Thanks.
Excellent review. My only quibble (and I have to have one) is that you didn't emphasize the stone-cold reliability of Toyota SUV's. Especially the Lexi vehicles.....They're over-engineered by a factor of two or three...
very true..that is something NO review takes into account when ranking vehicles, other things like looks are considered which is sad since looks are subjective
Agreed, Leon. My 2017 GX460 just passed 122k miles and it's just stupid reliable. Still looks, feels, and sounds new inside. Zero squeaks or rattles. NONE. Engine and transmission run literally like new. Sure went in for airbag recall two years ago and I got a 2021 Dealer loaner. Mine drives IDENTICALLY to that one. These things last like few other vehicles. Just do 5k OCI's.

Technically, the front perforated seats are heated and ventilated, not cooled. Nice review! Shame these are not available in Australia, but the market here would mainly want a diesel version of the Lexus LX470. Ergo the LandCruiser Prado D4D Kakadu.
Alex, that was a million dollars comment on how the resale value is unimportant and not helpful for people looking to buy a used vehicle. I've been looking into a used 4Runner but it always seemed better to get a new one. That can be said for many of Toyota and Lexus models. Great review as usual! I do wish this vehicle had at minimum a 9 inch ground clearance btw.
Very professional, highly detailed review. I doubt you could be more thorough. I think some people at the actual dealership(s) could learn some product knowledge from you.
Glad to hear the direct injection was removed for the GX. I think that manufacturers haven't figured out how to keep the intake runner clean from EGR. With port fuel injection, this is not a problem.
The land cruiser prado also comes with a rear door option with the spare tire under the rear of the truck! My dad has been owning one since 2008 (bought new) and currently it has 425xxx kms on it! its powered by the 2.7L 4 cylinder that comes in the tacoma!
Thanks for the video it is very detail. I am planning to buy a SUV looked at Lexus GX 460 Benz GL 450/550 not able to decide which one to buy. Felt Benz interiors great compared to Lexus however Benz is very expensive since both runs on premium gas and has low mileage I am considering following points your suggestions will be helpful 1. Driving comfort ,2. Passenger comfort ,3. Resale value , 4. Maintenance cost
Alex on Autos In the same price range you can get RX 450h. Yes, it is a different vehicle, more of a crossover, but the difference in fuel consumption is considerable. Would love to see your review of the RX 450h. And when Ford updates its Expedition with aluminum body and new engines, that would be very interesting as well. Probably a couple of years from now.
Excellent review and hugely helpful. After research, the Lexus GX460 looks like THE car for me for its reliability rating, comparative cost of repairs and overall nice styling. Speaking as a designer, the front grill is not a design plus as it is out of proportion with the rest of the vehicle and simply too monstrous. But the rest of the car is nice looking. it wins over all the competition I can research - The Escalade looks like an ambulance, for my money, and the BMW has very poor reliability ratings and very high costs of repairs. For my purposes (I have no family or children to haul around) the unavoidability of third row seats is an irritation on SUVs - I need room for dogs, plants, suitcases, a painting or a piece of furniture, fifteen flats of pansies or a palm tree, as opposed to people. Cargo space is key. One wishes that one could get the car WITHOUT third row seating, or that it was removable. It's irritating to haul around that much extra weight for no reason in its fold-down state. Still, even though my driving is strictly big city and occasional highway driving on vacations, there are potholes galore and dreadful road conditions in the big city driving I do, in Houston and Dallas. The body-on-frame construction makes it worth putting up with a couple of design flaws, like the weird rear door. . Suspension and rugged construction matter. No one wants a car that rattles and falls apart when it goes over a road hump.Like Alex, I can only afford a used GX460, and they are hard to find with low mileage, and pricey when you do. (Especially if you have a color preference like me - "Satin Cashmere" is my "must-have.") But I am encouraged to press on with the search, given Alex's good report. Thanks for the superb and detailed review.
In my honest opinion, when the Lexus GX does get a redesign, the engine should be downsized to a 4.0 Liter Direct Injected V6 with an 8 speed automatic transmission with standard 4WD. Of course premium fuel would be required, and the compression ratio would be higher. Same thing with the Toyota 4 Runner, except that it will run on regular fuel and have 2WD and 4WD versions.
This engine is actually the base model engine in similar year tundra's as well. They removed direct injection and lowered compressoin ratio. But its essentially a newer tech 4.7 in the 1st tundra. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_UR_engine#1UR-FE

Great review Alex. Will you be returning to TTAC at some point? Your written reviews are the best in the business and it's a little hard to watch your videos at the office.
In my opinion I think the tires are too small for this vehicle. I've seen these on the road and the small wheels make this seem top heavy. Wider tires or more flared wheel wells would be an improvement.

I’ve searched thousands of used GXs and can’t find any with the full camera system, LDA and radar combined.
This is a very complete review of the car but I found all the references to the other cars confusing and distracting making it hard to follow what features the car did have.
Nice reviw, Alex. Looking forward to lr4 review.
another awesome knowledgeable review! thank you alex !
