We were also looking at the 4runner trail version and for the same price we got a used Gx460 that has been leaps and bounds more comfortable. We joined the GXOR group and it has been one of the most enjoyable fb groups to be apart of. I also love that it shares parts with a lot of other toyotas and that makes the aftermarket for it huge!

I absolutely love this thing. It's perfect as far as I'm concerned. Also, funny you mention going to the grave with it. My neighbor bought a Land Cruiser Prado in the late 1990s and he died a couple of months ago but his wife and daughter still drive the thing. It's almost 25 years old at this point and it didn't have an easy life either because they own a lumber company and it spent its life on forest roads. It is perfection almost. The front styling is not my cup of tea and I’m still a huge Lexus fan. I love the older GX470s and LX470s to me those are perfection
Just said goodbye to my beloved 2005 GX470. I never had a moment of regret, even though she was the most expensive purchase I ever made (besides my house). After 17 years and 200k miles, my "tank in a tuxedo" was worth every penny. Kept up with all the Lexus-recommended service and she never failed me - can't praise this chariot enough! Sure-footed on ice, snow, wet roads, and even on the beach when other trucks got stuck in the sand. Awaiting delivery of my 2022 Lexus GX460 - I'm confident I can look forward to another long & dependable life with the best SUV in its class. Oh - and I call the incredible visibility inside the GX the "greenhouse view" - virtually non-existent blindspots. Thanks for a great video review!
my mom just passed down her 2009 gx470 to my sister, still runs like new. Now she has a 2020 gx460. :) These things get handed down from generation to generation lol
@Tweed Penguin it has never broken down before, yes it has only one major issue with the transfer case, but it isn't out of commission. We hardly drive off road these days anyway. Besides, we're replacing it with a 2012 GX460 with only about 42k miles.
I got one of these in early 2021. I’d say 70% of my decision process came from watching this review 5 times. Nice work guys! Very happy with the 1865 technology.
I still love it! No issues other than a guy at Home Depot slamming door into the side. No dent, but big paint chip. One thing you got going for you is apple car play. They released it the year after me, lucky! Anyway, it’s great for the family too. Third row seats can be tight, but great for short hauls of kids and in-laws to a restaurant. Lexus dealers also rock! Good luck! Perfect truck for the country club:)
I just bought the last 2023 GX460 my dealer had an could not be more pleased! It is everything you need, and nothing you don’t all wrapped in a beautiful package that will last the rest of my life…
2023 is the ultimate version. I currently own a 2015 GX 460 luxury. In a couple of years will trade in for a used 2023 model. That will be a the generational car I own.
My dream 4x4 off-roady car. This is luxory, reliability, off-road capability combine in one. Actually you are the only maintsream reviewer understand that car.
Here in Colombia, just recently Toyota started selling their lesser models such as the Corolla. As a brand it is mainly known for the Prado lineup, for this it is perceived as a luxury brand, and it sells these luxury trucks as hot bread. But most of the prestige that comes from having a modern Prado or a Lexus GX or LX is precisely because they are the same vehicle as a 20-year-old one. They are bulletproof and are extremely capable of road. On many places of the country, those are the 2 most important features. As of today in cities you can found swarms of modern Prados that retail for over $85k and on rural areas most of the trucks you find are 90’s, 80’s,70’s and even 60’s Land cruisers fully working and carrying 3 times their cargo capacity. They are so bullet proof they have embedded themselves on culture. Outselling by a mile premium German brands, while having even more expensive models.
This channel is something special. Combination of subtle humor, excellent editing, thoughtful music selection, and a unique and informed perspective on each vehicle. Not just another repackaged car review. There is a deeper part of vehicle ownership which is recognized here. Nice job, and thank you for the refreshing entertainment and perspective.
Lol, watching this video again 2 years later. About to take ownership of our 17’ model and we are going to buy a new 2023 for the wife to keep driving. Love these vehicles.
My 2010 GX 460 got 257,000 miles, and it still runs like new. I had to open the hood only a few times to replenish the window washer fluid and replace the headlight bulb, and honestly, I love my 2010 GX 460 over my 2016 Model X and 2018 Q7.
@@Grant3758 I have a 2010 GX and recently did a 2 Day Rd. trip. It was very comfortable. Especially compared to my RAV4. Fuel economy over the interstate with cruise control driving around the speed limit +5 or 10 miles an hour was around 19 to 20 mpg
@@diegor.1905 If it has never been in major accident and service record is good, then you should buy it. I have 1990 Toyota Prado with 300k miles still running like new, nothing has broken, not even the power window system.
Assuming quality components are used I'd assume the air suspension is more susceptible to weather deterioration after a decade or two vs mileage right? For any average driver at least.
These are beautiful beasts. I have an 05 land cruiser. Bought it new back in 05 and it is still flawless going strong at 280,000 miles never had an issue. These proper SUVS ARE THE BEST
Sales figures for the 2022 GX are the highest since the 2005 model. 2005 was the GX's first year and 2022 still has a chance to beat 2005 in the last quarter. It has not been updated in 12 years and doesn't need to be considering the current sales figures. If 4runners sell new for >50K the GX460 is a steal at 60K. I just bought a 2022 Green GX, Black line special edition for 60K.
Finally a proper review of the GX. I cant stand all the other youtuber reviewers that will compare this with other luxury SUVs. For better or worse, its a different class of vehicle and the guarantee that this will be running when everything else is in the junk yard is the key point. And I love technology but automotive infotainment is the worst kind of technology and this car just opts out of all the bullshit that is packed into cars every day.

For sure I just watched Redline review video of this truck and he is completely clueless on why this truck is great with a cult following. I can't beleive he does this for a living he did a half ass job researching before even putting out the video and got the specs all wrong it was annoying to watch. But he's the type of guy that buys a 4 cyclinder Porsche Cayman in automatic. Idiot.
1 year later, I followed 2 paths that were not for me in life and seeing this video again makes me think how much progress I've made. Finally being at peace (mostly) with myself pushes me to do things I love to do again. My grandpa used to have a gx460, and he brought me that peace as well by going on some long car rides talking about anything and everything. Although it's just a car review, it's far more than that for me. Thank you for doing what you do.
I ended up getting a 2022 black line edition. The upgraded infotainment system sealed the deal for me. I had a 21 4Runner and sold it after 3 months for $5k more than I paid and moved into this and I’m so happy I did.
This is the best overall review on UA-cam for the Lexus Gx! I own 2021 LX, 2019 Gx and 2014 Gx. I am a huge Fj heritage fanatic and love these beefy Lexus naturally aspirated V8s! Built to last!
For the GX and 4runner, you will truly appreciate these once taken offroad and seeing how well it does. And the fact that you can make it home with no worries.
I have a 2008 GX470, so I usually receive a GX460 when I take mine for service. I can feel the improvements in chassis tuning and drive quality in this vehicle over the older generation. Even it is still an old vehicle, there is something about it I really love. It is graceful, subtle, simple, but most importantly, it gets the job done in the most drama free way. Sometimes a drama free life is a good thing. I highly recommend a GX460 even though I wish they would have improved the engine performance and gas consumption on this more.
I literally just got my 2015 GX460 certified pre owned last month. And you guys got it on the dot. When i have other sports cars that arent practical, I cant help but love to have a suv like this that you can always rely on. Knowing i can easily work on it myself is awesome. The crazy aftermarket support is awesome. Keep up the good content!
Off road, I prefer the swing gate to the lift-gate, and since this is primarily a Land Cruiser, that's why it has it. Honestly, it should have a tail-gate like the bigger 200-series/LX570.
@@ForgottenWaypoints it's based off the Land Cruiser Prado sold outside North America, maybe that's why it's got that swing gate, if it ain't broken, don't fix it

The intro, nailed it. I have owned 2 GX and each time had to sell them for some reason. more room, need something else.. etc.. and right now, here I am supposed to be researching a Tundra, F-150, or the like but I am back looking at the GX. I can’t count how many people describe it as bland, outdated, etc.. but when you have owned one you get it. I have driven my GX cross country from CA to GA, in the mountains of CA, on long commutes and damn.. they just rock.
Never seen two more laid back guys speak in a video than these two guys (unlike Scotty Kilmer and the Doug guy) and I still like it.They don't move their hands or even smile, but they transmit the necessary info on the Lexus GX. I like it.
Love your videos. Bought this truck 3 years ago and everything you said in this video is me and the reason I bought this thing. Wife uses it now for hauling kids, and in 2 years it goes to me and will be my truck until I get sick of it. Plan to build it up and drive it till it falls apart. I am a huge Land Cruiser fan and this vehicle is the next 60/80 series that we all loved for decades in our "cult".
Bought a '21 premium plus a few months ago. Love the car. Does everything I need it to, and does it well. Incredibly quiet inside. Have an '18 Mazda 3 as my fun car. Thanks goose, you're the best on youtube.
I do emotionally love mine! I just replaced my 2004. It had 55k original miles but never a single failure. The only "repair" in 16 years was to change the grease on the emergency brake. With no more miles than I put on my vehicle, the dependability is an even trade on gas mileage.
I know an lx470 with hydro-air suspension that had no (suspension, filter) maintenance, 180.000km on gravel roads, 14years, 3 medium accidents, and still no problems with suspension (hydro-air expensive parts), used in comfort 90% of the time.
I know a guy that had LX470 which all 4 wheels were grounded to the floor and hitting bumpstops. He was absolutely horrified. It goes both ways. There are Mercedes people who absolutely love and never had problems with airmatic
It's Ders Mane I surprisingly had very little Airmatic issues in my 2007 S550 I drove from about 78k - 105k before it was rear ended. Replaced the comprossor at 102k myself because the 13 year old original one just wasn’t keeping up. Cost about $350 and some time.
It's Ders Mane that’s about what I paid at FCP Euro for an Arnott rebuilt unit. Worked perfectly and was in excellent condition. My current Cayenne has the air ride system and I love the versatility, comfort, and performance characteristics it gives the car. Expensive, but worth it imo.
I went over all of the reviews and videos on the 2020 GX 460 before picking up the phone and buying a certified one with super low miles. I have lived out of the country for 3 years but am returning soon and needed a car when I return. This review is the reason I bought this suv, you did a great job without getting all flowery. I can't wait to get back in a few weeks and finally get to drive the beast. Many thanks!
We just bought a 2014 Luxury with 88K on it. Absolutely love it. We'll never take it off road, but that's ok. It's overbuilt. The Mark Levinson sound system on the Luxury is lovely. For everything this vehicle isn't, we have our S2000.
I drive a 2012 GX 460, with the F Sport package, that I picked up used about a year ago. With 85,000 miles and 8 year it feels new. Felt like this might as well have been a review of my GX. These trucks are timeless.
I've yet to try out one of the gx460s but your comment about it being comfortable for big people - over 6'3 - is EXACTLY what I wanted to know. I test drove a 2014 land cruiser and I was surprised to find less than an inch of head clearance (to my bald head!) even with seats at max depth. I can't wait to give one of these a try and hopefully I find my true land cruiser experience!
Love your reviews, you nailed the spirit of a Toyota product, and this one has a V8 with a soul in it. Because so many toyota products are souless!. Keep on going with the great work!
The BOFs - Fortuner, Prado, 4Runner, Land Cruiser, GX and the LX are the cars I don't wish die out. Please keep buying them, people. I know I would sometime in the future.
biggest issues ive seen with these trucks: -secondary air pumps w/ switching valves -kdss motor wire terminal corrosion -air suspension issues -leaking a/c evaporators -PRNDL switch on transmission -exhaust manifold cracks my issue is that certain check engine codes will limp mode the truck into 4LO leaving you in a very bad situation depending where you are. Good to know how to disconnect battery/reset the code if going on a long trip
And when I say biggest issues I also meant those are pretty much the only issues to be common aside from the usual o2 sensor or other universally common issues in any vehicle. I can't remember ever seeing a bad water pump on this engine which is usually common on a lot of Toyota engines.
Am I really the only one that LOVES the spindle grille on the GX? I think it fits so well. I have an IS F sport and it fits that car well too, but i love the new face on the 2020 GX. It looks great!
Much like the Prado (which is essentially the same car) this is for those who don't compromise. Comfortable, Very capable off-roader, Reliability is way up there. A great and underrated car indeed !
Traded in our 2016 GX460 for a 2020 GX460, first time in my life (over 50 vehicles) that I have traded for the same model… it is that good. Just a wonderful machine that performs like you hope most vehicles can perform. What a vehicle. It is nice, comfortable, rugged, reliable, luxurious and relatively economical for its size and utility. We love it,
quality engineering that will last longer than you want. i'm still driving my 2005 GX. i paid $50k and it was worth the money. it has been 100% reliable, and fun. but now 15 years later it's time for something new. sadly, everything that used to come standard is now an option, and to get this vehicle fully loaded costs way more that i believe is reasonable. i'm buying a subaru forester touring for under $40k. i'll keep the lexus though. my daughter was a baby when i got it and now it's her turn to drive it.
one major long term issue with these Lexus vehicles is the ABS is part of the brake master cylinder. So replacement goes from $350 to $2500 if you can get one. Coming out of Corona the refrain will be "back order"
@@bliglum My son is a Lexus/Toyota mechanic. The Aisin ABS/master is a frequent issue on several models with age, the GX 460 is one. He reports depending on the climate. Severe winter temps with extreme heat in summer will shorten the life of the master cylinder. It is THE big ticket item on the Lexus SUV. I respond to the premise that the GX 460 is bought by people who keep them forever. Also a consideration in a 10 year old use model. Right now anything older than 2010 and your paying $2500 for a low mileage salvage unit or direct ship from Japanese used parts source. New OEM not available. Many chose to drive on if the ABS goes but the master still intact. But the reverse and you're springing for some big money. My son has test driven these rigs with 600-700,000 miles and they look and drive like brand new. Maybe the best vehicles ever made. My comments are given it's a fundamentally 15 year old model.
@@bliglum Yeah, you haven't owned a Lexus/Toyota ever......Can confirm, every 150k miles you're looking at replacing one of these at $2500 part only. Mercedes tried using this electro-hydraulic brake system in the 2000s and ended up recalling all 2.2million of them and giving 25 year warrantys. Toyota makes you pay $2500.
i can totally understand why this is appealing. you get the looks of a modern car, but the simplicity from an older one - this is exactly what i would like to drive and also the reason why i appreciate older cars.
Great video, thank you! As a happy GX2020 owner I enjoy your comments, specifically of the owner profile looking mainly for the reliability of this automobile.
Agreed, he'd call it an Endless Money Pit (like Mercedes-Benz). And I'm very happy he (Mr. Kilmer) called the PT the worst car in the world. (Hopefully everyone else hate it and only hate it like me! NO EXCEPTIONS!)
@M P Scotty Kilmer only talks about reliability. I absolutly lost it when he said that Acura is better than Mercedes. Also when he said Porsche is the worst sports cars. Scotty Kilmer is the anti-car enthusiast
Oh my god @ 1:30 The beautiful music suddenly rang, and there were tears in my eyes! For the first time in my life I cried while watching a car review! Thank you for the great video!
My wife has owned 4 4Runners and this will most likely be her next car. When we met she owned a Bronco II, so she clearly favors the "truckish" ride and as far as technology, she couldn't care less.
I believe you left out at he KDSS. All GX460s have them. That’s why during turns you feel confident. The secondary air pump (If you have AHC) is an issue on the 2014s and before. 2014 and newer has LED headlights/fogs/brake lights. Thanks
Yes its old but yet it tugs at my heart strings like no other cars. It has personality that not many new cars have these days. And no it doesnt constantly require steering correction on the highway. I know, I own one.
The Toyota and Lexus vehicles age very well. The longer we own, the more we love them because they are very dependable and less fussy than other brands. They are only brands that our family members keep to 200K miles and beyond. Some have reached 300K and still run dependably strong.
I have a 2006 V8 4runner. It has a slight lift and larger tires. 16 mpgs is about all I can get out of it, but again that not why you buy them. I can’t get over how well built these SUVs are. 167k miles on it and routine oil changes and a new timing belt is all it has ever needed. Interior is absolutely solid with no squeaks. A 2020 and up GX460 will probably be the replacement for my 4Runner if I ever retire it. I love modern cars and am actually excited about what Ford has to bring to the table with the new Bronco, but it will be hard to get me out of a tried and true Toyota!
I think of SUV's as soccer mom vehicles. Which is why I would never buy one. I'd be embarrassed to be seen in one. Give it time, and I think SUV's will become "uncool," just like station wagons and minivans became uncool. I view a BMW X5 as a trophy-wife-mobile, but I suppose this Lexus could fit that description as well.
Looking at a used 2020 or 2021, you can get one for the mid to high $30k range with like 35k miles. Basically a new Toyota with bulletproof reliability and I could tow my small camper with the whole family on board. A new Sequoia is like 80k. I would go with this all day and twice on Sunday. :)
I have a GX i drive for work. I drive ~1000 miles every single week and have done it for years. It has 470,000 and has been in the shop exactly 1 time when I hit a deer at 50 mph. Nothing, and I mean absolutely nothing, has ever broken.

@Tweed Penguin it has never broken down before, yes it has only one major issue with the transfer case, but it isn't out of commission. We hardly drive off road these days anyway. Besides, we're replacing it with a 2012 GX460 with only about 42k miles.

Just got a brand new overpriced 2023 fully loaded GX. Can't miss the legend.
I just bought the last 2023 GX460 my dealer had an could not be more pleased! It is everything you need, and nothing you don’t all wrapped in a beautiful package that will last the rest of my life…

Juan Sebastian Suarez Ramirez Land Cruiser Prado with an ARB bull bar is the official vehicle of the Carribean and Latin America lol.
Very nice commentary on the Prado/GX SUV. A well made and durable appliance/tool of the truck world.

They should rename it Lake GX460.

That new green is sick. Love it.

Done for the rest of my life - LOVE MY GX. I am glad you finally gave this a review.
So you wish to drive a 10-20 years old lexus when others can afford to change their car every 3-6 years.

For sure I just watched Redline review video of this truck and he is completely clueless on why this truck is great with a cult following.
Is there any mods or tuning to make more HP from its engine?

I do emotionally love mine! I just replaced my 2004. It had 55k original miles but never a single failure. The only "repair" in 16 years was to change the grease on the emergency brake. With no more miles than I put on my vehicle, the dependability is an even trade on gas mileage.
You only drove 55k miles? And replaced it!? 🤯
There are Mercedes people who absolutely love and never had problems with airmatic

biggest issues ive seen with these trucks:
-secondary air pumps w/ switching valves
-kdss motor wire terminal corrosion
-air suspension issues
-leaking a/c evaporators
-PRNDL switch on transmission
-exhaust manifold cracks
my issue is that certain check engine codes will limp mode the truck into 4LO leaving you in a very bad situation depending where you are. Good to know how to disconnect battery/reset the code if going on a long trip
What? Toyota's break? Watch out for fanboys theyre gonna attack you and say its only an isolated issue and their toyotas never break 😂
At what miles these issues start to show up? I just got a pre-owned 2017 GX 460 and I'm lovin it.
Interesting. I thought this was the only Toyota (or car in general) with no known chronic problems.
The Stig I've seen a lot of these issues on relatively new/low mileage trucks, and obviously on higher mileage as well, some as early as 60,000kms
And when I say biggest issues I also meant those are pretty much the only issues to be common aside from the usual o2 sensor or other universally common issues in any vehicle. I can't remember ever seeing a bad water pump on this engine which is usually common on a lot of Toyota engines.
Just picked up a 2021 GX in the same atomic silver with red interior and I absolutely love my new rig!

quality engineering that will last longer than you want. i'm still driving my 2005 GX. i paid $50k and it was worth the money. it has been 100% reliable, and fun. but now 15 years later it's time for something new. sadly, everything that used to come standard is now an option, and to get this vehicle fully loaded costs way more that i believe is reasonable. i'm buying a subaru forester touring for under $40k. i'll keep the lexus though. my daughter was a baby when i got it and now it's her turn to drive it.
one major long term issue with these Lexus vehicles is the ABS is part of the brake master cylinder. So replacement goes from $350 to $2500 if you can get one. Coming out of Corona the refrain will be "back order"
That would be a problem, if Lexus parts failed with any sort of frequency, which they don't.
Is that still an issue, or are we talking about the older early 2000s models with the Aisin ABS/master cylinder mess?
The 4runner’s sophisticated cousin that holds his pinky up while drinking tea.
i can totally understand why this is appealing. you get the looks of a modern car, but the simplicity from an older one - this is exactly what i would like to drive and also the reason why i appreciate older cars.

The GX is an automotive classic, and thanks for the awesome soundtrack, All Emotions, ELF
My wife has owned 4 4Runners and this will most likely be her next car. When we met she owned a Bronco II, so she clearly favors the "truckish" ride and as far as technology, she couldn't care less.
Giving a thumbs up for the 80s intro music alone phenomenal!
It may be an old design, but its simplicity in operation makes it the most advanced Lexus you can buy.
This is exactly why I will buy one this year!
The 2016 model GX460 sounds like a wonderful car to get second-hand!
We own 4 Toyota products. 2 GX460's and two their gen 4runners. They have 1.6 million miles between them. Never been back to the shop.
Everything I hearth and saw in this review, made me buy a new GX460 today!
I bought mine in January after watching this review . And am loving it.

Lol. Just don't tell her she might be a little outdated, but it's the durability that counts.
The respect I have for Land Rover people is not that they can afford the car, but they have the time and money to blow just to keep it on the road
@John Doe id drive one of these before I drive a pick-up I'll tell you that much
I think of SUV's as soccer mom vehicles.
Whoever buys land rover are show off idiots. They cry when the pos breaks. Lol.
Geese: Let's take this to one more rip...
Low Fuel light: Blinks
Planning to buy this in 2 months . My dream car ...great review guys.
How’s it going?
Looking at a used 2020 or 2021, you can get one for the mid to high $30k range with like 35k miles. Basically a new Toyota with bulletproof reliability and I could tow my small camper with the whole family on board. A new Sequoia is like 80k. I would go with this all day and twice on Sunday. :)
