Vocal Coach Reaction to Ronnie James Dio - Last In Line - Ken Tamplin

- Dio is one of the great rock vocalists of all time.
I had the privilege of warming up for him on a couple of occasions, and bumped into him personally several times in LA.
Just an absolute monstrous voice.
I felt like I was doing a dis-service to the rock world if I didn't do a vocal reaction to him.
I have also recorded a medley of Dio that is on my channel.
His tone, open throat technique, range power, stamina, perfect pitch and overall entraining performances certainly earn him the right to claim the title of King Of Metal.
I hope you find this information helpful and informative.

When an artist sounds better live than on the record, he's definitely one of the best!! Unbelievable that he never took singing lessons 😶
Thank you.
The greatest singer of all time. Gone to soon.
Greatest ever🤘🤘 I love him even better with sabbath!!!!🤘🤘🤘
Dickinson walking the earth.
@@elgreco502 I was gonna say it . . .
He was a force of nature!!!
I agree one of the best vocals but a great showman. Ive seen him live many times
As an opera singer I LOVE how Ronnie James sings. It is so satisfying to hear him singing in a controlled classically supported way but in rock, heavy metal style. I miss that connection to the 'gut' when I hear a lot of pop or rock singers just singing in the mask or with various tricks, cutting off singing lines etc.... He also pays a lot of attention to the words he is singing, he is just a great example.
❤️👍🤜🌟
Yup. Every word you said. Dio has so many similarities in technique and the way he approaches performances, singing, and even particular words with Dimash.
My gosh, the more I hear Dio, the more I appreciate him. Just a killer, powerful voice.
Brandon Grieve Indeed!
Dio's voice. It has the power of a nuclear cannon, the menace of hell itself, and yet it's so damn beautiful.
Wow! 👍
I am STUNNED by his voice and his technique. Never listened to Dio and I am just sitting here amazed at this beast of a vocalist. Exellent reaction as always Ken.
Listen to the bands Elf and Rainbow as well. And Black Sabbath's Heaven and Hell album. All solid stuff, with the former 2 being blues rock. He also used to sing doo-wap, and cover showtunes.
oh hohoho... try listen to stargazer by Dio
Lance Shepler couldn’t agree with you more except for the ‘Native American’ part. Ronnie isn’t Native American he’s 2nd generation Italian-American.
Ronnie was Italian. ethnicelebs.com/ronnie-james-dio @Lance Shepler
One of my biggest let-downs. Went to Konocti Harbor, CA in 2002 and Dio opened for the Scorpions. Got there too late (three hour trip), and only caught the last song. DIO has to have one of, if not the best operatic rock voices of ALL TIME. Yes, check out Heaven and Hell Album, Black Sabbath.
Was front row at his concert and i passed out, i wasn't on drugs or drinking. He had EXPLOSIVE star power.
My very favorite singer. Seen him with Sabbath Mob Rules tour, first two Dio records tours this being one of them. Such a powerful singer and you can tell he loved his audience!
The most awesome thing about RJD is that at first, you think he is singing with this super guttural note in the chest range. Then you try and sing it, and realize he is singing it a full octave higher. Those notes are all A4s and up. These are so growly, it's deceiving.
Great reaction Ken!!! I'm a 60 year old metalhead woman, and I've been listening to Dio since I was 12. Yeah, long time for sure. In my opinion, he was/is the best metal vocalist, and best metal frontman that ever walked the earth! He is greatly missed. Would definitely love to see more reactions of him. This was great....thoroughly enjoyed it. Ken, you are a vocal beast yourself!!! Love your singing! Thanks for posting this! RIP RJD.
starburstppl Thank you so much for your kind words! And I agree, he is greatly missed!
Freddie Mercury has always been my favorite singer and my reference point in what a voice should sound like. But Dio is just so unique in his singing. Perfect pitch, technique, chameleon abilities to change his voice to the song. Just superhuman. He always seems a higher level above everyone else.
Ken, many times I have expressed my admiration for you, because you have often excited me with your performances. In fact, for me, and very many people, you're the best singing teacher on the network and in the world.
Greetings from Italy. 🙋
My words Amen
I heard that Dio didn't warm up. I can't believe that.
I saw him with Sabbath in 2007 and it was Heavenly.
I miss you Ronnie, Man on the Silver Mountain.
Live Dio still gives me goosebumps. He was the most creative Rock/Metal masters ever RIP RJD 😢
Dio and AC/DC are my all time favorite go to artists when working out. I love the way you break down the singing techniques
I'm so glad FlyBy804!
There is magic in his voice, it is precious and virtuous! Nothing can be compared to his singularity. He was one of a kind and my absolute favorite singer of all time.
MarieleCastán I agree! Dio was a tremendous talent.
Dio set the bar!! Dio was and is the Master! Such a strong vibrant voice ! There's no one that can quite pull this off. The young ones can learn so much from watching and LISTENING to Dio. Miss this guy a lot!!!
I honestly can't think of another more influential vocalist in metal. I know lots of people love Geoff Tate and Rob Halford, but this guy had everything. He had the soft, sweet tones and he had that monstrous belting sound he was so known for and everything in between. Just a masterful singer, performer and a brilliant lyricist as well. Something else he had was a stage presence that certainly set him apart. He lived inside his songs. He was one of a kind and is sorely missed. We love you RJD. RIP!
Dio was the greatest vocal master of rock history. My favorite singer. We have to learn from him. Nice song choice) Thank you for the video, Ken!
I like how his voice sounds like a "controlled yell", like chris cornell used to sing.
Oddly enough, Ronnie was Cornells' favorite vocalist.. I'm sure you can hear Dio's influence in Chris's style.
Lance Shepler are you kidding me? Cornell in his prime had more power than Dio ever did.
If you think Cornell has more power than Ronnie you've never heard mob rules live at radio City Hall ..in his 60's nuff said
B C 08 😂 RJD can be compared with only Freddie maybe
Lance Shepler sorry but chris in his prime no one could compare to him..chris got the pipes, but Dio was one of the best singers..
Mind blowing performance. That extra “neva neva neva come home!” Gives me chillz every time. Greatest Live Set of All Time. 🤯
Saw Dio on the Holy Diver and Last In Line tours.
I was totally blown away by his voice, his theatrics and his commanding stage presence from start to finish on both tours!
That's awesome Kevin!
Dio show his love and appreciate to his fans, shake their hands while maintaining singing on stage live.. Man, that guy bring tears to my eye, although I just see that in youtube.
@@NorlandKalgara I saw Ronnie with Elf, ( opened 4 10 years after ) Rainbow (great show ) and DIO always a great show. Fantastic front man, great singer, but more than anything, he was a fine gentleman and a. BEAUTIFUL SOUL R.I.P RONNIE - God how we miss you. .....
I saw him late. Opened for Deep Purple. Stole the show
Unfortunately I never saw him live... which I deeply regret
I never would have thought that an informercial could be so so entertaining. Love your videos!
😊👍
Wow, Dio just rocked the shit out of that place, what an amazing singer! Thx for ur vids, Ken!
Ronnie james dio probably the best metal singer of all time, thanks Ken this was great! Do more like this please (btw didnt know about the “never never never...” either hahaha was awesome and the “im gonna let the solo play cause i like it” cool
As much as I love your critiques, I think I enjoy watching you enjoying the music even more!
Haha, Thanks Jeremy!
I know I'm a few years late here, but Ken, what amazes me is that you sing like that while sitting down. Wowza
Thanks Ken. I think I requested you do a Ronnie James Dio. Excellent! Like you say, he is the master. He has a very rich tone, and even when he holds back at the very beginning, there is no air in his notes, so he is using full support throughout. Well done to you too for being able to pull this off😊
Hey ken. I got saved in the early 90s.I remember you from way bacck then. Wow what a good voice. I'm a drummer, but i appreciate vocals
Dio Rocks! :) Thank's for the reactions and explaining the technique Ken!
Man, listening to Dio makes me eager to get back to practicing. Same thing can be said about Vivian, glad you left the solo. What a great listen to bookend a day
R.I.P. Ronnie. My favorite song from Dio is Black Sabbath's Children of the Sea, could you do a version of this song please?
THIS
Children of the sea is bad ass dude ik the basest personally
I agree with this comment 100,000,000%!!!
@Lance Shepler That too... and what about with Rainbow? Like Kill the King etc.
love that song too...check this out. ua-cam.com/video/nkkOZswwoOA/v-deo.html
ronnie was spot on...not a wasted note or out of place note...ronnie's command & control of his voice was amazing....definitely a rare vocalist in heavy metal...
Tim Sears 👍👍👍
Oh man Dio was the reason I started to sing. The presence, the skill, the power! Amazing!
Love that you love old metal. Takes me right back to my teen years
I'm so sad I couldn't see him before he passed away. He was one of the inspirations along with Bowie, mercury, and Elton John that motivated my singing.
Great Video Ken! I've Been A Fan Of Ronnie James Dio Since I Was 16 Years Old, The Rainbow Era. I've Seen Him In Concert Seven Times And Met Him Twice In Person. As A Non Musician I Always Like To Hear The Technical Aspects Of What's Going On.
That's awesome, Johnny!
Man, I hold no pretensions of ever being singer - but I really enjoy a true expert watching a master and critiquing his performance - great stuff Ken, thanks!
Dio is the GOAT, and he wasn't actually short, he just stood that deep into the stage when he sang 🤘🏼
Ken, I like this solo too! Thanks for giving it the right place. Doc
I think I like watching Ken , cuz he is always SO HAPPY, and positive, and so professional, yet not boring! I hope you are as happy as u seem to be Ken! Dang, I went crazy here with ur lil version inserts, great! Kens videos make me get into like good mood, I have no idea why, but whatever works!
Oooh my favourite singer
He's a LOT of people's favorite singer, and one of mine, as well, Pux!
Ken, how could we not love that song “ The Last in Line” Ronnie James Dio, the Metal guru and the True Metal head banger iconic with that kind of voices🤘and you did it beyond expectation, superb, pretty awesome and a fantastic commentary. Love it 🤘🤘🤘✌️✌️
Ken..big time enjoyment of both your instruction and enthusiasm in sharing fantastic vocals. As always thank you.
I was spellbound the few times I saw Ronnie perform live. Got the honor to see him about 10 feet away at a small venue in Sioux City IA and I swear to God he was distorting my consciousness with his voice.
Anai Bendai I believe it.
For a man to love that solo, you are truly a man of music, love your work Ken Tamplin, you rock brother 🤘🏿❤️🤘🏿❤️
Thank you ken! Great reaction videos coming from you lately !! 🤘🏼 you are the best
Wish I was born in 80’s era to see Dio live
Insane voice....I loved hearing holy diver on my boom Box back in the day....just dated myself...lol another great video Ken.
Thank you so much Ken tamplin they are the best ,enjoy😃❤️❤️❤️👍💪
So Clean! One thing to note. He has a natural power volume. And he is not making it up, or faking it. I loved his abilities. The way he was able to do this allowed for longevity. My opinion.
I love your reaction videos, esp. this one! Love your teaching moments within them also. So interesting! Gee Ken, you can really belt out with such control and sustainability! I was lucky enough to see Dio's Mob Rules Tour concert in Chicago in 1981 right after turning 16 yrs. old. During those years in high school, my small group of neighborhood friends and I got to see the Scorpions, Iron Maiden and Alvin Lee. (One of the most memorable and cherished times of my life.) Thanks for all that you do Ken!
You know ken is enjoying this shit so much he lets all the guitar solo play out lol
I first heard Ronnie Dio on the first Rainbow album on "starstuck" Awesome! Then I heard him doing "long live rock & roll" and "kill the king" His voice was absolutely incredible. I never heard anything like him before.
Every time I hear Ronnie sing that song I get goose bumps and my hair stands up on my arms….incredible !!! Wow Ken, love your voice and your absolute talent 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Ken. This man is the voice of metal...Hands down. Could not agree with you more. Range, power, depth, style. Amazing. His voice was just as amazing singling a gentle ballad as it was belting out Long alive Rock and Roll with Rainbow. IMHO he never got the acclaim or exposure that he sound have in his day. He was overshadowed by a guy who was Know for his antics onstage as well as off in Ozzy. Who in my opinion, has a manufactured thin voice. He surrounded himself with great talent, and as a result, made him sound better. Ozzy couldn’t shine Dio’s boots!
@NickCobra -- Couldn't agree more, brother! Ozzy.... ugh... the Prince of Dorkness! Ronnie was the real deal!
I prefer dio far more than Ozzie no matter he is pioneer..
@@RHINOSAUR Ozzy is nothing but an overrated, monotone, clown. Who the fuck would hire that no talent POS? He always has great musicians in his band, that carry the show for that crap singer. RONNIE WAS AND ALWAYS WILL BE THE GREATEST HARD ROCKING / METAL VOCALIST EVER, PERIOD !!! Amazing songwriter as well. R.I.P RONNIE. ..
This video made me so happy. Thank you for making my day. Dio is a god
Ronnie wasient as dark as people thought though they said he'd hold his fingers like that as a sign of the devil but I watched him in a interview he said no that's my sign to my grandmother that I love her...
I may have seen a different video, but I remembered him saying that his grandmother taught it to him as a Jewish blessing symbol.
@@jeffkemp6689 As a Philly Italian, to us, it was meant to ward off the "Maloiks" or the evil eye. It was so weird to see it considered evil itself. But that's pop culture for you. Co-ops from other cultures and sells it cheaper and dishonestly. It's a gramma sign, to be sure!
Wrong
His grandmother Italian
Taught Dio to do this horn thing with his hands against evil things
To protect himself against evil
That's kind of a Italian thing dudes
Italians are very into this stuff
So most of the Europeans are
That sign is an Italian thing, it's actually meant to REPEL the Devil (or evil spirits or whatever) away from you. It's supposed to be the horns fighting off the "evil eye." Old-school Italian thing.
@@jeffkemp6689 Hee said that and It means, "I love you." He said his grandmother told him that. For that to mean "I love you" his thumb would have to be sticking out. My wife is a licensed interpreter for the deaf. He also said that he didn't believe there was a heaven or a hell. "It's what you make of it here." I wish he was living today because he is brilliant and would have so much more evidence to come to a more definitive conclusion. I literally pray for so many of these guys. I KNOW what I was told I would need to do. He was very dark in his lyrics, jovial to his fans, and a complete ass to Vivian Campbell when they both were fighting cancer and Viv tried to patch up whatever their rift truly was. We'll never know because of the spin but I heard him say something to the effect of, "He doesn't even play metal!" He was referring to Vivian needing to support his family and playing in Def Leppard. I sometimes think Ronnie forgets about his "Doo-Wop" days with is hair slicked back in "Ronnie James Dio and the Prophets." Regarding Vivian, the sacrifice he had to make as a player to mainly play rhythm to Phil Collins, who is no slouch, but Viv can do things Phil could never dream of. Then add on his time in Whitesnake and now his tribute to the guy, "Thee Last in Line." Don't forget Ritchie Blackmore gave him, Graham Bonnet, David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes their BIG BREAKS and if Ritchie wasn;'t a the Rainbow the night ELF was playing, he may not have ever got his chance.
I love how you get so excited about someone who sings so well. Awesome vid Ken T. You made me smile through the whole thing. 😁
I listen to this recording every day as part of my work playlist. Dio will never die.
Wow, those stage props look epic! Didn't know of him, will sample his albums this week (hurray for streaming services and office jobs!). Thanks for the pointer, finding bands is daunting. I had a good laugh again watching you have so much fun. Cheers!
No voice teacher can ever teach you to sound like Dio. Unique sound, youre either born with it or not. A great mix of twang, growl and rock screams. 110% charismatic voice.
But it's not Twang, Dio is singing in full chest voice here, it's very noticeable by the placement of the vowels and the projection.
This is Open throat technique.
I absolutely loved Vivian Campbell with Dio, my favorite solo is on Rainbow In The Dark. I can never get enough Dio
I remember this concert, I swear he had Multiple voices in his being. It was so powerful. It was like the whole crowd was in awe, and very quite. It was strange. Hypnotic.
Thank you for explaining that his louder singing is NOT screaming!!! As you said, "perfectly on pitch." I just discovered you, and I'm very much enjoying your videos...
Thanks for watching, RedCrabSC!
I love RJD since I was a girl and I still listen to his songs now... he is my GOD!!!!!RIP God of metal!!!
I just wanna say I love you Ken. Always puts a smile on my face to watch your videos. Fantastic, excellent singer. But, also just an overall awesome and laid back guy.
Thank you so much for the kind words, James!
The Last in Line, Holy Diver and Raibow in the Dark solo's are master pieces, they have different techniques, they have so much feel, power and a great melody!!!
Thanks for listening. Rock on!
Guys like Dio, they dont have looks to carry them, so they bring the goods....every time. They stand on stage for all of the right reasons. Much respect. A killer singer who is very passionate about his fans in every interview. Never took anything for granted. 🤘🏻💀🤘🏻
You killed the ‘coming home’!!!! Awesome!
One of the things I like about watching Ronnie live is he was such a performer in every way possible. Vocally, physically, his expressions, and hand gestures, etc...
Everything he did in his performances was emphasized at 110%. That's rare in a lot of musicians. Many times they'll be very still while singing or playing. Not with Ronnie. He was always in motion, utilizing the stage completely, to his every advantage...
Do you know if there is any footage of Ronnie playing the trumpet? I would love to see it...
Very cool! Learned alot just from this vid!! Thanks!!
RIP legend. Love the effort you’ve been putting on this new series. We rock!
You're one of those guys that got away man should have been a big big big big big Rockstar with that f******voice I loved it
Paul Thompson I know right, crazy! How that didn’t happen! Maybe Still can?!
Crossroads, fk!!😕
Ken has had a very respectable career. I've been following him for nearly 30 years. I agree that he has the talent of a megastar and could've been a household name, but that doesn't take away from the awesome career he's had.
@@BrandonGrieve Thanks so much. I appreciate that. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ken_Tamplin
He did. But Ken took the high road. That’s why I’ve never met him and can sincerely call him a brother.
Dear Sir. Your voice is incredible. The long note you hit, as well as the other sections you sang along with were fantastic. Also, I believe that the section Dio sings at around 2mins 50 seconds is the best singing ever.
DIO lives 🤘🤘🤘🤘
Congratulations my friend Ken !!!!
Thanks for the kind words, THE LEO!
My all time favorite singer ever!! Thank for reacting to Mr Ronnie James DIO. I’m really interested in your coarse.
Best rock voice ever !!!!!!
Such a great voice! Thanks for the video Ken. You are awesome!
Thanks RRP3168!
Ronnie James Dio's voice is one of the most distinctive and greatest voices in the rock world!
Rock on!
I was not watching the video, just listening, but when Ken performed that screen at the beggining, I had to switch tabs and see him doing it! Amazing!
Thanks Mateus!
Thanks for letting the solo play...Viv Rocks!
Chuck Novy Rocks he does!
Dio is probably my favorite rock singer.
Man, in this video you really show an amazing ability to do his techniques.
You are a talent.
😊
Is there any way to bring Dio back?
One of the greatest singers ever I was lucky to see ronnie live
I’m not a singer, but when I hear a DIO song I pretend to be one. Thanks for making this one Ken.
A Mustang Owner Haha! He does have that effect on everyone, I think.
Thanks again for doing this reaction video Ken !! Just awesome!
Yes R.I.P. Ronnie James!!!!!!!!!!!! \,,/9\,,/ ty Ken for doing this reaction!!!! you rock!!!!!!!!!!! \,,/9\,,/ One of the most Metal voices ever as well as Kevin DuBrow!!!!!!!!! LOVED BOTH OF THEM N THEIR BANDS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Great channel. I grew up with some buddies, and we were into(still are!) metal and rock and that sort of music. But more centered on the vocals than many other "metal heads", I would say. We loved a good singer. Fun to see you bring up many of the same vocalist and references that we liked to listen to(and even debate, haha).
Keep it up. Dio totally rocks here! You too! :)
Thanks jodaneidajo!
I expected somebody else, but it was him, Dio!
Hey Ken, this is my first time watching one of your videos. I'm a guitar player of over 25 years. I know metal inside and out. So many vocal coach guys on youtube proclaim to know a lot but just talk. I'm really impressed by your demonstration of the Dio tone.
New subscriber from Australia mate. Peace \m/
This guy just as cool as David Lee Roth. Passionate about music
Dio was one of my fave vocalists of all time. Would love to sing like that!
He was an awesome vocalist!
Great example! Ronnie Dio, Cortland New York's finest! I agree, great guitar solo, too. Sounding that clean live - amazing!
Ken, great note!!! Ronnie would be so impressed
This is one of those songs that you listen to it in your car at max volume and hope nobody gets in your way.
Ken... Dude... In a recent comment of mine on a Demash song you reacted to, you mentioned more of a growl that you thought was missing! My reply was HELL NO! DIO is one of those artists that ROCK fans like me (and obviously you!!) can default to when we need THAT kind of power! Demash is a different and yes refreshing planet of vocals that I hope doesn't change! MATURE? Of course but not "convert" to fit western tastes!!! DAMN!!! I enjoyed this vid!!!!!
Aspiring singers take note! Dio was incredible. When I started singing, I had about an octave a half to work with. Listening to legends like Ronnie, Bruce Dickinson, and Phil Anselmo helped me expand my range and refine my tone in the most significant ways. In terms of placement, musicianship, and stage presence, you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone that’ll beat Dio.
I’m just sad most of his songs are too high for my timbre, but I’ve grown proud of scaring people at karaoke by singing songs like Sweet Caroline and Voodoo an octave down 😜
Awesome video. I love your appreciation for the music and Dio. I’ve been a huge Dio fan for a long time. I never heard anything about his dark side. Could you tell me more, Ken? You’re the Man.
Vous êtes, la passion et le plaisir dans la musique ça se voit et s'entend. Un maître.
Ken the Men
Have a good day Buddy
You keep doing what you doing
Awesome channel
And so do you
Long live rock'n roll
Ronnie James Dio is a great singer, was a great singer ,will always be a great singer , ronnie got a hell of a set of pipes . Great live singer
