  • In this video, we celebrate the vocal career of Ronnie James Dio, one of my all-time favorite singers! Come along and let's enjoy Ronnie!
Ronnie James Dio - Singers Then And Now
The goal of this series is not to make fun of people, to show a picture of them in their youth and then mock them in their older age.
The goal is to showcase how voices have sustained over time. And who has taken care of their voices and who hasn't, and what was the result. And what could've been done differently for those that did not take care of the voices.
Could they have sustained their voices? And can they be rehabilitated now? Some singers (few) are just gifted with great genes and have been able to sustain their voices on their own. This is a rare exception. The rest of us mere mortals have to work at it, just like we have to work at our voices to get range, pitch, power, control, longevity, stamina, and so forth.
In addition, it's just really cool to check out the incredible careers of these artists and marvel at their singing.
So today, we are looking at none other than Mr. Ronnie James Dio!

I saw him I believe in 05. I was amazed at his vocals. He was definitely on that night. To think he was singing night after night with stomach cancer is just simply amazing. He must've been hurting and there must've been struggles with the voice. I believe he is one the greatest vocalists of all time.

I really don't think he was dealing with stomach cancer in '05. It was actually while touring with Heaven and Hell in 2009 that he stopped long enough to see a doctor and was subsequently diagnosed with cancer.
To me, even in his later years Dio was a master at his craft. There will never be another metal singer as great as Ronnie James Dio. 🤘

Even Dio's "old" voice is so full of charisma and personality! He was one of those singers who had set the level unrechable for nowadays autotune & compression "superstars". Thanks Ken!

It blows me away that Dio was 37 turning 38 when Heaven And Hell came out in 1980. Dude was/is proof that if you take care of yourself age doesn't matter.

I saw Dio only once, with Heaven & Hell (the reunion of Black Sabbath with him). What an awesome live performer he was! That night, his tone, dynamics and pitch were spot on. One of the best rock/metal voices ever… if not simply the best. 🤘

I had the opportunity to see Dio live during his Last in Line tour. It was in December and a snow storm was coming in. I was the first one to show up and they let me in early. I got front center on the barricade. Roughly 500 people showed up and he still made it to the coliseum to perform. It was more of a personalized performance and it was awesome. He really interacted with the crowd and sang some songs that were not on his set list. Great night.

Really a fantastic character, certainly along with Rob Halford had a lot to do with the way Hard Rock clean Metal vocals developed, they really mark a before and after (like Plant, Gillan, or say Aretha Franklin)
What always captivates me about performers of his caliber is how they adapt. I find his later years to be more narrative focused, songs like "The devil cried" and "Follow the tears" are just inmense journeys where the few dents in his voice only give a strong sense of urgency to the message. And I agree there is a certain decline, but only with regard to himself, he could easily top just about anyone else. Which actually might be the reason for said decline, such a high standard to maintain over so long (and yet, all his performances are captivating to the end of his career even with the few issues here and there)
Dio really is the embodiment of determination and hard work; to me like Lemmy, they are people who whether you like them (I do) or not, it's hard not have respect for that level of commitment.
I think this breakdown is something worth coming back to quite a few times, it's like a good book; also quite excited about the new documentary will be on the lookout for it :)

Oh, I loved Ronnie's singing. He used to give me chills listening to him live at concerts. I couple things I noticed is the equipent used over the years. When he was playing in the 70's and some 80's, they used tube base equipment which has a brighter and clearer sound. I did noticed his change in voice as he got older but live footage is hard to gage unless you are listening to the sound of the mixing board and depends on who is doing the mixing and their taste. This part Ken you know very well as I don't. Even giving us decades of outstanding vocals he will be forever known for the horns. 🤘All this said, RIP Ronnie !

I saw Dio In 1983 at the starry night now the roseland theatre.. them again at the same place again in 96. Where he asked if any of us there had beenat the 83 show I was the only one that said yes. Upon which time .he informed us that show was the very first time Dio had played live together.. both shows kicked ass.. the 80s were so fukn awesome to grow up in. My favorite concert I went to.. girls school opened for IRON MAIDEN number iof the beast opening for Scorpions Blackout. Sept. 7 1982 I was 15.. it was their 2nd stop of the tour. Fresh bands not yet burned out from the tour.. simply amazing... I miss the 80s was the last great decade . No cell phones ... Computers were just coming around.. it was the last time anyone was truly free
In our country... Such a simpler time. Weve gone backwards since then..

7:00 I agree 100% As a total Dio fan, I say, that he ran into voice problems in his later years. One reason beside some stomach issues, wher stomach acid can damage a voice for sure, he had obviously some dental surgeries. At all his upper frontal teeth are renewed. This has an impact on his voice for sure.
EDIT: It also sounds as if his sinuses got tighter over time.

I love Dio like we all do. He actually released recordings before Hendrix. That's a long career. You can hear him say in the famous bus interview that he didn't believe much in eating or sleeping. He never warmed up. Plus he drank and partied. I think that as time went on he lost range and brightness. It would have been nice to see him keep his abilities completely in tact. But Elf, Rainbow, Black Sabbath and Dio. It was an amazing, beautiful career. Still it's something to think about. Someone who most people agree is the best hard rock metal vocalist ever eventually had troubles. Speaking for myself I'd like to keep what little I have as long as I can.

I already commented but also wanted to add that Ken’s comments regarding “the bigger the voice, the harder it is to maintain” was a really interesting perspective that made a lot of sense. I feel Dio’s voice was based on the big vowels and powerful lines, whereas we can hear some of that in singers like Dickinson and Halford. But if you view their “Then and Now” videos, it’s more focused on screams where Dickinson held up very well. However, arguably Dio had the bigger “voice,” which really is probably much harder to maintain good technique and tone. Take away screams from Dickinson and Halford, you probably are left realizing they didn’t have the width to their voices as someone like Dio. He was a monster who as Ken said, he did a great job of “holding that massive voice together” up until the end. Definitely aged, but he made it work! What a performer

Ronnie had his breathing under control from his years of playing the trumpet. His early years as a crooner is not very known. But his rock voice was absolutely phenomenal. He sings Mistreated in a way that not even DC do. Rest In Peace.

That show in 2005 - Ronnie had cold, but still did show and dvd, in his later dvds with sabbath in 2006 and 2008 he sounds much better.
Ronnie famously never warmed up, it worked for him, but maybe it would save his voice better if he did.
He was also smoker and beer drinker.
A lot of people don't know but Ronnie produced all his solo albums. No outside writers, no Desmond Child or Bob Rock. Genius. And my favorite singer too.
His dynamic range was incredible from softest tone to very powerful. My favorite parts in his songs are often soft ones, like beginning of "all the fools sail away".
Only few guys in rock use full dynamic range like that, Freddy also comes to mind.

I hear exactly what you mean as far as Ronnie having more of a " darker sound ". I realize you are limited to what you can use on these vids . What I will say however is I saw him in 2002 at the house of blue in Anaheim ( with Kings X and HammerFall ) . Dio absolutely blew the roof of the place . Every song was dead on . So much power . Didn't miss a note . Also I saw him go on before Maiden in 2003 same story . I thought he stole the show . Also when he reformed Black Sabbath ( Heaven and Hell as they were forced to be called 😂 / it was amazing regardless ).I've heard so much criticism from my peers ( musicians in the local scenes ) . The biggest criticism every older singer gets is " he isn't as good with high notes " . Well , I truly believe people get tone and pitch completely confused . His tone became thicker , raspier , more throaty and dare I say gutteral in his latter days . However I preferred that era . All the footage I've found and the times I've seen Dio he was on it .All to say I truly enjoyed this then and now shoot out with the late great phenom . In closing u r dead on . There will never ever be another Ronnie James Dio . Plenty of copies but they don't come close .

Now i understand why you sledgehammer open throat and support stuff into your students. It is because of our own safety. So Thank you from my future me :D

Dio made so many fantastic performances, so I'll forgive him that he had spent the most of his vocal force a few years before the end. There will never be a singer like him on this planet again! Thanks, Ken for a very interesting video! 🤘

What I love about Dio and what sets him apart even further is how soulful his singing was. Even though He sung metal.
U can really hear some blues/soul in all of his Inflations and runs.
He sounds much less 'classical' in his approach to melodies than most metal singers

He sounds much more classic than others, his voice is operistic.

Check out a singer named Jorn Lande. He;s a big fan and the closed in my opinion to Dio we have. He has great number of originals that are amazing but his Dio covers are spot on. It’s like if Dio was making music in his prime today, I love Dio growing up and I agree without the sickness he would’ve lasted longer. When he died and i found out it was stomach cancer, i was as amazed as i was Chadwick Boseman died. I say this because they both worked and impressed while they were sick. And that just adds to the “Bad-Ass” label they get in their respective fields of entertainment. Thanks for your presentation!

Ronnie in his late 60s was better than 99% of rock and metal vocalists in their prime. You, Ken, are in the 1%. Let's see if you can hold it for another decade (pretty sure you can LOL)

Arguably Dio’s biggest vocal transition was when he joined Black Sabbath and that is when that more throaty growl appeared especially with the release of the album, Mob Rules. I think that is when he arrived at his Apex and had decided which direction vocally he would go as a solo artist.
Great videos as usual Ken. Thanks

Well in Elf and some rainbow studio stuff he was pretty dirty already.
In live, sometimes he was more open clear relaxed. Sometimes morz harsh.
With Sabbath, more harsh , because the voice became stronger and it was heavier so.
Then he filled after a decade of heritage.
Its the italian riff raff way , between the eyes.
Its the way Dio approached his performance.
Even with Dio band towards the 90's , or Sabbath in 1992, his voice became more corrosive.
Yet, the sound was bigger too.
I mean in songs like Pain , like before and after solo , you re like " Holy fucking shit !!!" The Roaar.

I have a couple live of heaven and all tour with bill ward
      And its fucking scary.
Few elements could be extreme metal before its time, as Halford and Coverdale could do in grunts, growl
With all the love of the original, the dio version of that song on that tour is...agonizing feel and Scary as hell.
More creepy than the Ozzy version.

The darker voice fit the heavier material he did with Heaven & Hell. I love the young, crisp “pinging” voice as well as the more gruff, dark aged voice. That’s why I think some people say he was as good in later years as when he was younger. Certainly aged, but it was a different performance with a different effect if you will. 🤷🏻‍♂️

I absolutely love and adore Dio, in my opinion one of the greatest musicians i´ve ever heard and probably ever will hear. As i have said before Ken, i love and respect your honesty so much, because it is important to be honest, not only to yourself but also to other people, and not just mention all the good and exclude the less good/bad stuff. :)

Interesting how his voice got a little deeper and darker. Regardless he definitely held it together as best he could. The most impressive thing is that even with the cancer he pulled through vocally. I miss him R.I.P. I wish we had more years with him.

Coincidence or not , Dio ended up with a very similar texture somehow.
I see Ronnie singing that at home
