I gotta be honest, I was not a heavy metal fan. Then one day I came across the live version he did of Mistreated. Then I realized just how much technique Dio has. It's amazing what a talent he had.
So cool to see a teacher be so happy for their students rather than ambivalent, angry, jealous, or whatever. Ken is definitely a person who wants you to succeed...look how happy he gets for Gabriela rocking DIO!!!
You nailed the over dramatic part of Dio, I remember him singing this one song with him holding a sword, slaying a dragon. I remember the crowd being completely quiet and confused. It was the 80ies and way over the top.
I knew Ronnie and he hated that Sword and Dragon.... they use to laugh at themselves and called the dragon the "Cookie Monster" he thought it was ridiculous , he said the sword was bigger than me but that's all they had at the time....
Ronnie James Dio, 5’ 4” barely weighing over 100 pounds is living proof that size don’t matter when having a powerful voice, i don’t sing much Ken but if i was ever going to hire a vocal coach you would without a doubt be the one, Another great video my friend i absolutely enjoyed it.👍☮️☮️☮️
"I found Caruso great. And then Mario Lanza. Lanza was my role model. He sang the high notes with a great power. If anyone has molded me to become the singer that I am finally, that was Mario Lanza. Many rockers sing from their throats and they use a wrong technique. I'm a short man and I really don't have a super thorax or lungs. The trick is to pump the air from your diaphragm and send it past your vocal cords." (Interview, Penthouse Rock Heroes, 1996)
You know, Dio could have also put out a video on 'How to Sing Like Ken Tamplin.' 😎 The similarities in your voice are one of the things that drew me to your music. That and the fact that you could instantly turn into Lou Gramm and David Coverdale. As soon as I saw Dio on your video title, I smashed that like.
When a vocal coach can actually sing the song he is describing and explains how he is hitting the notes. Folks that is as authentic, real and genuine as it gets. The proof is in the singing! Also that would make an awesome book title
I have one of your students as my vocal coach and I never thought I could sing as good as I can now after only a few lessons. It's only been 9 weeks and I've built my chest voice so much and learned so many new techniques! Thank you so much Ken for being an amazing teacher! ♥
Man, I am a drum teacher and English teacher. It is so refreshing to see someone with the exact same passion in what WE do. Great job. Those girls are damn great, Ken. Makes me very happy to see younger talent doing it right!
Wow Gabriela and Sara! I do wish Gabriela would look at the camera because I want to see the emotion there! Truly inspirational to me as a woman to see a woman's take. I expect you to be able to sing Dio and you deliver of course. So awesome!
I follow you and I know your no BS, thank you for your guidance to sing correctly , I took vocal lessons when I was 16 for 2 years, and played in bands and sang, I follow you still, you teach the same as my vocal coach, i still have a voice cause I was thought to sing the right way, like you teach , I need more instruction, I’ve fallen into bad habits of going into the throat to hit notes.
To me, she is the most impressive of your students, because she is able to replicate the size and distortion of male singers. When I hear her sing Plant, Dio, or Johnson/Scott it is remarkable. I am killing myself at your course trying to connect that passagio lol (I have low voice). Interestingly, Zeppelin's Rock N Roll and Over the Hills, etc are easier to sing coz its all head voice and small at that. For songs like The Show Must Go On or We are the Champions with a very broad range within the song, it may as well be an alien singing it, and similar with Dio. Thanks for all the insight you provide!
Ken is amazing, his knowledge about the singing is something priceless, thank you man for sharing this whit us! I have started practicing his lessons just a few weeks ago, and I`m telling you, it`s a life changer, awesome, I would recommend his singing course to everyone! Greetings from Serbia.
I came for Dio I stayed because I knew KT Would belt out "HOOOOOMMMMEEE"🤟 THANK YOU Ken, I will never see Gramm, Dio, Walsh, Delp, Perry Again, I thank Jesus I was able to see all of them in person in the 80s.
I love rock music and have no intentions of ever singing, but I would love to just sit down and talk music with you all day. You seem like a really cool dude. 😂
Dio had an advantage he used to play Trompete 🎺 in his earlier days.so with this breath technique it is an advancement.he used it a lot during his career
I've really never listened to Ronnie James dio Ken i may have to check him out of you say he is great than I'll take your word for it man I love your demonstration of Ronnie even though I never listened to him but it rocks so does Gabriella she rocks as well so does Sara awesome demonstrations man 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Definitely check him out! If you really want to appreciate him as a singer, start out looking at his early 60's career as a "crooner" with Ronnie & The Prophets, Ronnie & The Red Caps. Then move on to The Elves, Electric Elves, then Elf, then Rainbow, then Black Sabbath, then Dio. You can find it all here on YT.
Children of the sea just gets me every time. Long live rock n roll is another one, man the high clean notes are insane, but he's dirty too!! Great video man and youre voice is still awesome! Keep at it with the awesome content
I confess I am not familiar with RJ Dio however I was hooked on your video and amazed to find out that these heavy metal singers are not just born with these amazing voices but that everyone can 'learn' to sing in that way as you demonstrated along with Gabriela and her soft sweet intro changing instantly to raw heavy metal sound contrasting again with Sara's bouncy punchy version - who said you cant teach an old dog new tricks 😉
Great Vid!! Ken, you must be a proud teacher, Sara Can sing everything, any style, she is an all around performer, Gabriella, is a stone cold Metalist!
Hi Ken. Dio had the talent of singing high notes and make it sound like it’s not as high. Mixing and it seems like several frequencies going on. I want to get a voice more like that. My voice is close to Bon Jovi but still he and other great singers got more nuances. Please, let me know how to dig into that. I guess you did but would be great on another video.
I’m a HUGE RJD fan. I’m a subscriber. Please note the Lyrics: We're a laugh without tear The hope without the fear We are coming, home I’m a Metal purist so I’m picky. HMH 🤘

Ok, so this is what i was looking for. Dude you have one of the best voices i have ever heard. i cant sing for shit, but i have a good ear and it is a shame you are not lead singer for some mega band.. plz keep the vids coming.
Ken Tamplin Vocal Academy My favorite composer Ronnie James Dio.very sorry that he died on my birthday. Once in my life I was able to attend on his concert in Moscow. Sometimes, when I have attitude to sing, there are songs of RJD. Last in Line, Sacred Heart, Rainbow in the Dark, Catch The Rainbow etc. Ken, could I ask you: what do you think about Liliac rock band. My opinion is that they makes one of the best covers hard rock music. I installed some Liliac stickers on my van. Please watch some video of them. Rainbow inThe Dark, Sandman, Holly diver, Crazy Train and some others is amazing. Rock On 🤘 & Rock Hard. What about this family? Best family band.
I gotta be honest, I was not a heavy metal fan. Then one day I came across the live version he did of Mistreated. Then I realized just how much technique Dio has. It's amazing what a talent he had.
For sure. He was a vocal beast!
Im a simple person whenever i see Dio i click

Yes! No questions asked!
😆
Yep. lol.
Mapin Prasai RJD forever!
So cool to see a teacher be so happy for their students rather than ambivalent, angry, jealous, or whatever. Ken is definitely a person who wants you to succeed...look how happy he gets for Gabriela rocking DIO!!!

I still think that Dio made bigger risks and was more expressive as opposed to control/safety. Or he was just a master of distortion/almost growl
Came here from a Last in Line live video. Immediately demos that song. Badass!
I grew up in Central NY where Dio grew up. I followed his career from the early 60s with Ronnie Dio and the Prophets. Gabriella is incredible.

Dió had a very pure rock voice. Natural.

Thanks for the visit, Louis! Appreciate it!
Gabriela almost sounds like a young Doro Pesch (Warlock) when she starts to put on some distortion. Awesome 👌
This one gave me goosebumps. Awesome job, Ken... RIPDIO
Thank you, John. Ronnie is sorely missed.
Dio was a force of nature till the very end. Go listen to some of the last live performances he gave at 67 yrs old. Crap that guy was not human.
I agree with the greats that you mentioned, but when mentioning best rock singers you must include Steve Walsh!
One of my favorite singer ever! In Rainbow he was a fire 🔥 such as Graham Bonnet who was came after Dio 💪
