They are so cute and sweet. Can't help but love pigeons. They are so intelligent too, I wish more people would have more respect for these beautiful creatures.
cute overload! i love seeing these videos pop up on my youtube homepage, how relaxing and calming to see these handsome birds enjoying snacks with their favorite person :)
I've been feeding the pigeons in the park for months and they will land on my head, shoulders, lap and hands but when I try to get a wee pet , they won't allow it . What is your secret? How did you get them to allow petting ?
It's all about trust. Pigeon are actually really smart creature. If you spent time with them, they will recognized you. By knowing who you are they feel more comfortable to let you touch them. Wild pigeon doesn't like being touch but they don't mind it while feeding time. It takes time to build up trust so be patience. First step to touching them is not to touch them first but let them touch you. In other words let them come to you not you going to them. Hopes that helps!
thank you. Yes, they have landed on me and even on my head which I love.... so I'll just happily wait til the day when I can pet their so-soft feathers! Love them so much...
Another trick is to let them get hungry. Not starving them but make them hungry enough to come to you when you are feeding them. Almost all pigeon keeper, trainer, fancier does this trick. For example Pigeon Racers use food to call their Pigeons back home because they are train with food at an early age that's how they respond to a type of call when the Owner wants them back inside the loft. Now back to taming a wild pigeon with food... Let them get really hungry to the point where if you toss a seed they would run to get it.. Also try not to toss a hand full, toss only a little so they don't get full quickly. Toss them closer and closer to you, Then once they are really close put some seed on your hand and make them come eat it off your hand.. By eating off your hand they trust you more. By trusting you more they would come closer and faster to you when you are feeding them. It takes time but once they trust you just repeat the steps and make them hungry. They will get soo hungry that they are to focus eating just slowly and gently touch them. Remember that if they are full they will never let you touch them.. This is only the first few steps to touching a wild pigeon.
Yes, thanks. I have gotten them to eat from my hand already... but I will try to be more parsimonious w/ the seed. I have noticed that they appear to be satiated often.
That's really a great start if you can already get them to feed off your hand. I would keep doing that and soon they will let you touch them. Hmm maybe next time when your hand feeding them, try to slowly and gently move your hand with the food under the pigeon. Kind of like rubbing the pigeons belly but with food on your hand. Make sure the pigeon is focus on eating though. If they appear to be satiated, it will be harder for you to touch them but all it takes is time. Don't worry you will get to touch them soon. Like I said pigeons are really smart they will recognize you and feel comfortable enough for you to touch them. You got to build up the trust then the friendship. Try out what I said about the hand under the pigeon and see how it goes. I like to hear the progress and updates.
Xiomara Amaya... They just visit, I don't own them...when they get bored they fly away. Most of the pigeons u see r probably descended from domesticated pigeons which would explain their friendliness. Their ancestors may have worked as messenger birds or perhaps homing / racing pigeons. London is perfect for them as there are lots of places to roost and humans who will feed them.
Amazing video, as always, Daniel!😊 I truly hope that you and your feathered friends are just fine and that you are supporting them in any way that is available for you😉 I've learnt a lot from you and I go back to your videos with pleasure! I hope that some time in the future you will have the chance to go back to your "pigeon routine" as it once was and then you'll be able to make and share some videos again - it would be awesome!😊 Meanwhile please accept warmest greetings from me and my feathered bunch!😉🕊

I like the way you hold the peanuts vertically in your clenched hand . THat allows them to burrow a bit which they like....
