ABOUT THIS FILM
____________________
Kestrel characters
Apollo, the male, is young and inexperienced. This is his first every breeding season and he is alternately either a little over excited or utterly overwhelmed. In contrast Athena, the female, is an older falcon and has possibly already raised chicks at least twice before. She has a no-nonsense approach to life and often gets impatient with Apollo's haltering attempts to please.
Kestrel courtship
It is usual for male kestrels to look for nest sites and then call out for a female, hoping she approves of his choice. We pick up the story when I notice Apollo calling from a tree in a nearby ash wood, trying to attract a mate.
Struggle to find a mate
Unfortunately, there is competition for suitable nest sites here and each time Apollo chooses a spot, another bird species occupies it before he can attract a female to it.
Kestrel nest box
I decide to help Apollo out by building a new nest box especially for him. This nest was part of a wider project to improve the habitat in this woodland. Read more about it here: www.roberteful...
Kestrel eggs
Within days of erecting my box, Apollo calls and Athena appears. They waste no time in settling down together and starting a family. Just 10 days after their first meet, Athena lays the first of their five speckled brown eggs.
Turbulent beginnings
But Apollo's youth and inexperience often gets him into trouble with his new partner. Athena regularly berates him - watch her trap the poor male kestrel against the wall as she squawks at him for not bringing her food when he arrives to help incubate their eggs.
Five kestrel chicks hatch
Apollo soon learns who is boss and, thanks to his diligent support, five tiny chicks hatch out. With five mouths to feed, there is no longer time for squabbles and this kestrel pair soon settle into a rhythm of hunting for and feeding their chicks.
Tragedy strikes
But before long they more serious challenges to overcome. It has been a cold, dry spring and the rodents that these kestrels hunt are in short supply. The nights are also freezing, with regular hard frosts.
Tough decision
As the food supply dwindles, Athena decides to join Apollo hunting. She needs to balance the need to keep her chicks warm with the need for food. It’s a tough decision to have to make and sadly two chicks perish.
Intervention
I decide to help and begin to drop food into the nest to help the three remaining chicks survive. Thanks to Apollo & Athena's dogged determination, and with a little help from me, the three chicks survive.
Kestrel chicks
Watching the chicks grow, and finally take flight is a heartening sight. After such a tough start in life these kestrels are already displaying the ferocity they will no doubt need to survive. Watch them squabble for food once Athena stops sharing it out fairly!
Keep watching
You can continue to follow the lives of Apollo & Athena as they begin another breeding season on my live nest cameras!

I've been a falconer off and on for 50+ years and I am still captivated by videos like this. Birds of prey are one of the most fascinating subjects. Most people don't realize just how hard these birds work to get a meal, even when they don't have additional mouths to feed. Kudos to helping them out with food; I would suggest in the future bringing them mice or small rats whole or provide a small feeding station nearby for the parents (we falconers do this when "hacking" young birds.
I still find myself providing meals for wild birds of prey as they passage through in the spring and fall (helps to keep them away from my domestic poultry and pigeons).
I used to be a falconer too my first birds were kestrels and like the wild birds the females were always a bit more feisty
I did have a feeding station but crows, jackdaw’s and stoats/ weasels would often get the food first I have trained the male to go down a tunnel on a steal pole to keep out some of the competition Thankfully this year is better for food and they have 5 chicks which will be fledging soon Check out my live cameras to see them

Whenever Robert put his hand in the nest, the chicks backed up against the wall, sunk down their shoulders, their eyes got wide, they cried out nervously, and the little legs quivered with fear. Thanks it’s very common for birds of prey to feed dead chicks to there surviving young, nothing goes to waist in the nest
Unlike with human nature, nothing goes to waste in nature. Everything is trying to survive, not simply consuming!
@@carlwilliams6977 I’m fairly certain in time of famine, humans would probably feed on dead humans. Survival above all else. It’s commonly believed that during the Siege of Vienna, they would eat household pets, like cats and dogs.
@Van Chao
In times of famine humans "would feed on other humans". There's no would or could. They did it. All over the history there're tragic stories of people breaking the taboo to survive
The sad part of it is they usually didn't gain from it much. Usually people eat other people out of desperation. They feed on the already dead, those who were similarly affected by the famine. It means they didn't have much fat or even muscles anymore. So even breaking the taboo didn't provide much sustenance
It is very common in many creatures, even some humans do it in some countries
When my mom had an abortion years ago, she cooked the baby.

😁
Mammals are the only taxa with facial muscles that are designed for facial expressions. Evolutionarily this is thought to have happened to aid in communication and in suckling. While other taxa that have faces obviously have muscles present in them, this means that birds don't have the control/muscles possible to make facial expressions. As much as people like to anthropomorphize them ("he looks happy when you pet him!") it is not possible for us to tell really
Even the descriptions of these behaviors are problematic as they are inherently assigning a emotional trait to a behavior, ie "depression-like" implies that those behaviors are consistent with depression, but we can't confirm that those animals experience depression to begin with, making it impossible to reliably associate those behaviors with the emotional state.
I think it's a major issue with using animals, particularly non-primate animals, for behavioral research. It all basically boils down to assumptions and poorly evidenced interpretations. For example you can talk about a "mouse trying to get out of a cylinder filled with water", and the generally accepted interpretation of ceasing to attempt to get out as "depression-like behavior", when it could just as easily be interpreted as "preserving energy for future opportunities", which would be the polar opposite of a depression-based behavioral alteration! There's a ton of ambiguous behaviors like that which are inherently subject to biased interpretation by the researcher.
That doesn't mean that these studies or that field of research isn't without value, but I'm always astounded at the lack of questioning interpretations of animal behaviors when I read animal model papers. Even with more objective models, such as neural activity, there's still a huge assumption that the structures, individually and as an integrated whole, function similarly to humans - and we know this often isn't the case, as evidenced by the number of drug trials that showed results in animals, but flame out when tried in humans!
@@MB2.0 Its not just facial expressions that show emotion. Body language, especially in non mammalian animals, is all of their emotional expression. The way he pauses, looks away the looks back makes it look like he is confused.
I love how these young male birds of prey all seem to have two braincells. They’re all so cute and funny, but they’re all doing their best as first-time dads.

Thank you!
I love Roberts longer vlogs too, could watch all day and have done, I’ve watched every single 1 of his UA-cam videos, only found him and his channel a few months ago! X
I prefer the longer videos as well!
@@RobertEFuller Much respect to you, sweetheart, from across the pond.
It is easy to give credit where credit is due and owing, kind Sir. You are amazing.
Thank you for starting your yt channel. It is not just entertaining, but educational, as well.
Kindest regards... ⚘
@@delilahboa I only found Robert's channel ~ 6 months ago, as well. What a Global treasure, right? The David Attenborough of the art canvas, painting us pictures and stories... so soothing with his gentle, calm voice.
He's also an Internationally renowned wildlife painter and has his own Studio. If you're a fan of his, check out his website! His works are nothing short of amazing.
Ask Mr. Google about Robert E. Fuller. If you only spend 30 minutes, you will see what a truly amazing man that he is.
Much love and prayers to you and yours from your eternal sister in Christ somewhere near Seattle.

So love seeing the kestrels up close. We have a pair around our house and often wonder about their life. Thank you for all your hard work.
Athena has a very short fuse "I can't believe I have to explain this to you. Why did I pick you? I don't have the time for inexperienced dads", she really likes screaming xD
I felt that. Think everyone did
She’s teaching him with rage! Beware of Mum!
Yeah, i felt a bit sorry for Apolo. But hey, he looks happy to have chicks
@@Picachkirage is not good. that's wrong
Lovable idiot syndrome
I just watched this with my father. Amazing footage. We enjoyed a lot. I'm impressed by how many apects of animals lives are very similar to humans'. This channel is like Narnia. Thank you, Robert!
Humans are animals too. ;)
Have seen this video more than once. I still like it as the first time. Robert Fuller gives so much information and love about all birds Its a great pleasure to watch a film from Robert
As well he helps birds in need. Something i really love. Not everybody who puts a camera to see birds (owls the most)24/7 dying from starvation. To give food is against nature If put a live cam is not against nature with light etc..thats why I live Robert because he helps nature a hand Thank you ❤
I didn’t know birds fought so much for nesting spots before watching this channel. I suppose it makes sense. For birds who like hollow trees, there are only so many around.
Watching this for the second time ♥️ is so heartwarming,,
Poor Apollo he’s doing his best but his wife is like “c’mon Apollo! Smarten up” reminds me of my wife
This is heart warming show and your dedication is so noble and showed your character. I am animal loving person and when I see such a show I get great satisfaction. We need people like you at this particular time where the world is in a mess and sad story in Russia, Ukraine, Gaza and East Africa nations.
I salute you Sir and will be watching your website in UA-cam.
I love how you named the couple, and I love how they argued occasionally, and how Apollo looked at the chicks after coming back and seeing a new one each time (eg. 16:38)
so cute! I love kestrels now, lol
Kestrel chicks are my fave ♥️ they're just so awkward and goofy looking with those baby feathers!!
Also, Athena screaming at Apollo 😂 his face is just "yes dear...."
So grateful to you and Jean, you are keeping these little beauties alive and well with just a tiny bit of extra support when needed. Love the documentaries you produce and film, and I Thank you!
I was glued till the very end. Very intriguing documentary. Never a dull moment. Enjoyed every second of it!! Thanks so much.
Such a joy to see the 3 young kestrels with mum on the branch at 35:45. Nature is cruel, ruthless, perfect and beautiful all at the same time. Sometimes it's really difficult to reconcile the different ends of the spectrum. I guess that when the chick dies, it becomes a food source, especially if the others are struggling. Very sad but also shows us how strong the survival instinct is. Thanks Robert, another wonderful video. God bless you.
Aww, how sweet watching Apollo try so hard and Athena such a loving and protective mother. So heartwarming ❤️❤️❤️
I'm amazed by the shots and various angles you've managed to capture, especially when they're in flight! What a top rate documentary you've created; fascinating and compelling. Thank you for sharing!
RIP in chat to the 3-day old chick you died, he’ll live on in our hearts forever 🫡

Poor little thing. Rip 3 day old chick.

I just wanted to make mention to Robert Fuller. What a caring good guy taking care of wildlife birds. Thank you for your videos.
This preciousness is exactly what I needed today. Thank you for helping and documenting these incredible birds!
And thanks for watching and commenting 👍
It's great to see both parents working together. They act better than humans lol this is so beautiful to watch
I wouldnt say better than humans but good parents forsure
@@lightup6751 Nah humans suck. These two are way better parents than most humans. It's a fact.
@@Abii140 nothing about that is a fact. Im sorry if you had shitty experiences with your parents. but its mindless to think that your own experience is the same for everyone else in the world. most parents are caring, supportive and loving. which is because most people are decent. and that is a fact thats easily proven.
Your attention to detail and clarity is unparalleled. 🎯 Thanks for another fantastic video!
It was a thrill to watch this Kestrel couple have chicks then to watch them grow and progress. It was so nice to see all those views from inside the nest with that hidden camera. It was thoroughly enjoyable to watch.
The mom encouraging the chick to go back under her for warmth is so wholesome and heart warming. The chick that died is tragic 😔
its heartbreaking to watch 2 chicks perish but the 3 other is doing well and im happy your taking care of the fourth chick as much as you can
Damn he’s a better dad than most dudes i know 😂😂❤❤ so freaking cute thank you for sharing
Fabulous as ever Robert, Athena is a good Mum!!
To keep up and be able to tell the stories for all the animals you are insanely underrated. Thought I was watching planet earth for a minute.
Agree
Apollo is funny his reactions LET ME OUT STOP BLOCKING THE EXIT 😂 Athena is a good Mum ❤️☯️😇
CADE ATRADUÇAO DO VIDIO
watching this video is so relaxing when your having a bad day.
Thanks glad you enjoyed it 😊
It's wonderful to see owls as well as kestrels. Apollo is a hard worker and a great mate. I am glad Athena gave him a chance.
I was fascinated by the little family. Thank you for sharing this adventure
This is the most emotionally fulfilling video I've watched in a long time! You are a wonderful person, Robert!
What a great experience and Incredible footage, thank you Robert for sharing with us.
😉👍
Apollo trying his best 😍
Poor Apollo lol he’s like “alright, ok, I’ll feed you, we just gotta…oh man. Oh crap. Uhm ATHENA!! oh no, ATHENA!!!!!”
To say that I was incredibly invested in Apollo & Athena's courtship, & the birth of their baby chicks is an understatement lol. I had to look away when her baby chick passed away. Mr. Fuller's fantastic wildlife videos are better than National Geographic!
Sure is AMAZING how they work together!! Apollo sure is a great dad! THANK YOU FOR ALL THAT YOU DO!!
😁 Thanks for watching 👍
That was so beautiful!!! I can't describe how grateful I am I for the amount of work you put in so that we lucky people that were nudged to your channel by the algorithm got to be touched by something that goes beyond any UA-cam video I have seen in a long long time. I did not except a work this touching today, thank you so much. I want to support you somehow!!
Its been many years since i have seen Kestrels and this was a powerful watch. I take my hat off to you Robert.
This has got to be one of the most incredible videos Ive ever seen. Wonderful. Stunning at every level.
Thanks for this birds eye view of these bird brained parents !! Loved it. Respect from MAINE USA
Another wonderful nature video. This video clearly highlights why we ALL must participate in wildlife conservation in anyway we can. Stopping land clearing, planting more trees, establishing more wildlife reserves, avoid using pesticides - it all counts. Robert - great narration too!
29:16 Horrified screams of grown men 😂🤣
(Understanders will understand)
It's Me!!!!wwww
its from that one video where they replace the bird screams with meme screams
Yes
This channel is worthy of awards. Fabulous.⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Thanks we are trying to make it even better 🤩
The work you do with these birds and other animals is amazing Robert, Never stop being you.
Hard work good communication builds a strong family, good job Athena & Apollo
You've done a wonderful job helping to raise these chicks and documenting the Kestrels' life cycle. Although it must be a little sad when all the fledglings leave and the nest becomes empty.
It's my first time watching one of your videos, but I have to say I love your narration and camera work. Props to you, Mr. Fuller!
Thank you so much - have you seen my live streams ua-cam.com/video/NYkUySSjJog/v-deo.html - we have eggs and chicks and you can follow the action 24/7
