Thanks Anthony. Yeah, I figure there are plenty of people that can do all the benchmarking and tests, but when I'm buying something I want to know "will it work the way it says it will, reliably, and not make me want to throw it out the nearest window" 😄

It's actually pretty easy, I'm just going to give you some quick instructions (assumming you never changed something in the BIOS): 1. From Windows, restart your notebook. Entering the BIOS after a regular shutdown won't work, because the respective menu is skipped for a faster boot time. 2. When the Lenovo Logo shows up on boot, press Enter. The notebook will beep and show you a few options, one of which is to "Press F1 to enter the BIOS Setup Utility", which you do. 3. Congratulations, you successfully entered the BIOS Setup menu! It can be a bit overwhelming on first glance, but it's not that bad. The mouse won't work, you have to navigate it by using the arrow keys, Enter and Esc. Press the right arrow key to get to the "Config" tab (at the top of the screen). Here you select the "Keyboard/Mouse" menu item and press Enter. 4. In the "Keyboard/Mouse" options, you can change the "Fn and Ctrl Key swap" option by selecting it and pressing Enter. 5. (optional) I prefer to have the F1-F12 keys perform their standard actions by default and pressing, for example, Fn+F1 to mute the notebook. To switch to this behavior, you can enable the "F1-F12 as Primary Function" option. 6. To save your changes, press F10, then Enter. The system will reboot and the functions of the Fn and Ctrl keys are now switched.

How do you do it with the battery? Do you load it while youre making music or do you remove the battery before working? And is there a possibility to remove the battery?
Funnily enough, the battery has never actually gone flat while I’ve been out and about, so I’m saying it’s a lot! I don’t use it unplugged all day, but I’ve got at least around 4 hours out of it with light use. Lasts longer than my iPhone! 😊
Yep, sure is! Shows how ignorant I was of newer connection types back then! I did correct this in future videos and actually reviewed the Lenovo USB-C Dock. ua-cam.com/video/cWIIq0-zvSo/v-deo.html
Hi Pete thanks for sharing your thoughts. How hot does it get usually under moderate load (ie Reaper with 10+ plugins running)? I am planning on getting the i5 version for daily productivity tasks and some music production. Cheers
Hey Kevin. So far it’s been really good in terms of heat - the fans do a good job so the trade off is probably the additional noise I mention in the video. That being said it’s always on a desk with plenty of clearance all around, so haven’t tried the lap test! 🙂
Hey did you buy this ThinkPad e580 model, what's your idea on E580 ? About the heat management and battery life. I'm looking to buy it any review would be nice...

Hey there. I haven’t actually used Ableton personally so can’t give you a definitive answer, but from what I’ve heard about it, the i5 should definitely work for you. I would also suggest you get as much RAM as possible.
Excellent video... Would you recommend it for running multiple VMs ?? Is it too heavy... How is the wifi connectivity? I read some mixed reviews about the wifi adaptor being a little slow...
Hi there. Thanks for watching and for your comments. I haven’t run any VMs on it at this stage but with the 8th Gen i7 and 16gb RAM I think it would do just fine. Weight is about average for a 15”. I carry it on my backpack without any issues but it is definitely not super lightweight like an ultra book - it I was after the extra performance and storage. Wifi has been fine. I only have a reasonably slow ADSL2 internet connection however so haven’t really tested it on a very high speed network. Hope this helps!
Hey Pete, I've been reading some reviews about this notebook and the main issue that people brought up was that it heats a lot. What are your thoughts about that aspect? did you notice the heating under heavy load?
Hey Alex. I haven’t noticed any excessive heat to be honest. As I mentioned in one of the videos, the fan is a little loud under heavy load when running a game or rendering a large video file but haven’t noticed he temperature issue. That being said, I always use it on a hard, flat surface. I suggest if it was in your lap or a soft surface where the ventilation on the base didn’t have clearance it may get a little hotter. Perhaps the base models with the i5 and 8GB RAM do get slightly hotter under load also due to he lower specs?
Thanks Pete and B2359 for the replies. I eventually bought the Laptop last month with the i7 version and RX 550 GPU and yes, it gets noticeably hot. I noticed it about 1 minute after turning it on for the first time. I was actually shocked that such heat waves are coming up from the keyboard when I first touched it to type my windows username. Perhaps the i5 version does not heat that much, I am not sure. It still wasn't a deal breaker for me because I either use it when I'm working abroad and then I connect an external keyboard, or I just take it with me to meetings where I don't have to use the keyboard for that long. But I would definitely recommend others to stay away if they are planning to work with it daily. Besides that issue, the laptop is amazing for the price, so It's really disappointing, especially when it comes to Lenovo and ThinkPads specifically,
Thanks for the update. That is very strange as it’s something I just haven’t noticed. I guess I don’t do a lot of solid typing so perhaps I just don’t notice, but I’ve never found it particularly hot to the touch. Good to know and to pass on though for sure.
Pete Johns, Well, the i5 heats less than the i7. Additionally, mine has an RX 550 as graphics card which heats much more than an integrated one. I just returned from a long meeting and the laptop's battery barely lasted for barely 2.5 hours. I wasn't using it "lightly" but I also didn't do anything that should have made the GPU work too hard, or anything that caused the CPU to reach 100% at all times, so 2.5 hours at medium use is another big disappointment.
I just bought it today and found a strange issue. When you plug in and plug out the charger to/from laptop, screen goes black for 2 to 3 seconds. is it normal? does it happen to your E480 too? its completely annoying.
I really hadn’t noticed that to be honest but just tested it and you’re right, though mine is probably one second. I imagine this is because the power connection is the USB-C port which can actually also be used to connect other devices, including monitors. So Windows 10 is checking to see if it needs to change the video output. Not sure if this is the case in all laptops hat use the USB-C for charging but I imagine it probably is.
Nikhil Shah 14 hours ago (edited) I found out the solution. If anyone requires, do following, Go to Intel's "Graphic Options", then Power, then select Power Source as Battery. Then disable Display Refresh Rate Switching option. Now flickering won't happen.

As a pro laptop, you sometimes use it in public while working on confidential stuff so not being able To see what’s going on the screen from thé side is a good thing from my pov
Sure thing! There are screen cover devices that can actually focus the viewing angle too. I’m lucky enough that my work is rarely confidential but for someone needing privacy,, a wide viewing angle may indeed be a drawback not an advantage.
Hi Pete: I intend to use it to edit photo as well, would the screen color changes (brighter or darker) if the screen angle is changed slightly, ie tiled 5 - 10 degree back, would the image appears brighter/darker. The Lenovo T series and Yoga are really go such that the brightness doesn't change so no distortion. thanks
Hey there. So I don’t do any photo editing myself so far from an expert. The screen doesn’t have the best range of viewing angles so may not be ideal if you were planning on using it any other way than directly in front.
The viewing angles of this screen are incredible for an LCD display. 5-10 degrees will be barely noticeable. Just keep the screen nice and clean and I haven't had any issues.
Hi Pete , Thank you for your time its a great help. I been searching info about this laptop and watch your video before i bought it. Now i am looking for info about maximum ram capacity of this particular laptop. I bought the same one (20KS005BTX) sales company listed as it is 16gb Ram however i see few youtube videos and its upgradeble to 32 gb I am little confused, I watch your memory upgrade video earlier, How can i find out what is the max ram capacity of this particular laptop İ couldnt find it on list of "system info". I dont want to order wrong size of ram. mine came with 8gb if i can effort i will buy 2x 16gb and use this 8gb on my sisters lenovo. If max ram capacity is 16 gb then i will order another 8gb.
Tamer Demirbilek hi there my friend. There’s a great website form Crucial Memory that will help you identify exactly what RAM your laptop needs AND the maximum capacity. Just go here and enter the model number of your laptop - www.crucial.com/ It’s how I found that my laptop had two slots, each of which could support a 16gb stick of RAM.
It does have a 2gb dedicated Radeon graphics chip however it is not exactly a powerhouse when it comes to 3D gaming. It would probably do okay but not in the league of an actual gaming laptop.

Yep. Hopefully I made it clear that my purpose isn’t gaming? Definitely not a laptop anyone should consider for playing games. It can run The Sims and Roblox which is all my kids care about. 🙂
@@PeteJohnsMusic yeah I didn't get it for gaming was wondering if it was capable of any at all. This laptop is great but the CPU configuration is kinda bad. Overall a good buy for business oriented people as long as it is on sale/good price. otherwise with the money there are better choices. thanks for the review tho
@@profa6479 @Prof A I am also looking for a battery with better battery life, though would be great to have similar specs to the E580. Have you bought a laptop? Which, did you finally opt for?
Any reason as to why you didn't consider a used macbook that would go up to around the same price as your E580, Pete? I figured it would be nice to use a mac since you do a lot of production with garageband.
Really good question Jake and something that I definitely considered. The main reason I didn't is that I'm so familiar with Windows for all my audio and video production in Reaper and Premiere Pro on the PC. Now, you could very correctly point out that both of these applications are available on Mac, however I wasn't keen to spend the time learning the small differences if it was going to put any of my creating on hold. Hopefully I will one day get out of this comfort zone I seem to be in with Windows PCs! The other issue was getting something powerful enough in my budget. To get similar specs to this machine in a MacBook I would have spend 2-3x as much and was concerned that things like HD video editing and encoding would be too slow. Again though, really good question and something I probably should have addressed in the videos!
I have this or don’t plug or unplug the power very often so it doesn’t bug me. Someone else did comment on one of my other videos about this so I think there is a fix for this? Sorry I can’t be more helpful.
This can happen. This machine has two different video cards. Based on your power settings, it's probably switching between them when going from AC to battery operation.
Hey there. I just went to the AMD website (www.amd.com) and clicked through to detect and download the latest drivers so that’s what I would suggest you do.
Hey there. It has a decent processor, screen and graphics card, but is not really designed as a gaming laptop. It owuld be fine, but there are probably better options.
Hey there. I believe there is a backlit keyboard option available but I don’t have it. I haven’t gone in to the boot menu for a while so can’t remember this. Maybe enter, F1 or space bar? Hopefully someone else can chime in.
Hey there. I haven’t played that game on this machine. The only gaming it tends to get is when my kids are playing Roblox or The Sims, which it doesn’t fine with. 😊
Hey there. I cover these questions I’m subsequent videos in the series. In my experience, the heat and noise hasn’t been a significant issue, however I have definitely had reports from others that this has been a problem. ua-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa56qFWUpVmUyuCRYumlXiJ1S.html
I have the i7 version. You can take a look at more details in my other videos about this laptop here - ua-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa56qFWUpVmUyuCRYumlXiJ1S.html

Wish I saw your videos first! Since I didn’t NotebookCheck gave it a good review which swayed me, but you’re giving me a good real world idea. Thank you!
Nice one. Spoiler alert - I really like mine still. For the price, you get amazing specs and it runs well. Speakers are not amazing, and can noise is a little louder than other laptops, but in terms of value and reliability, I’m still a happy camper.
Hey there. I haven’t actually tried it st this stage, it I imagine with an i7 professor and 16gb of RAM there would be ample resources to run a virtual machine.
I have tried running virtual machines. Couldn't be more perfect. Just get 16GB of RAM (DDR4!) and the i7-8550U and yes, ist perfect. Don't expect too much from the actual Virtual Host though. i.e. Virtualbox performance is pretty bad as is. Don't expect to play games on a VirtualBox VM no matter what host computer you're playing on. In short, yes.
Thanks for your feedback. I tend to get anywhere from 4 up to 8 hours depending on what I’m running. The battery life stated on the manufacturer specs always seems to be quite overstated so I take that with a grain of salt.

The battery is internally installed, so while it is replaceable, it is not easy to do quickly, so I leave it installed all the time.
Pete Johns how many hours does it gets for just light browsing with power saving on
Funnily enough, the battery has never actually gone flat while I’ve been out and about, so I’m saying it’s a lot! I don’t use it unplugged all day, but I’ve got at least around 4 hours out of it with light use. Lasts longer than my iPhone! 😊
Isn't that power plug a USB Type- C port ? If its so.. then you get a ton of docks for connecting multiple monitors...
I have an E580 - the charger is just a USB-C charger. It's SUPER standard and a ton of docks (almost all) use it.
Shame its not thunderbolt though.
Yes, that was a bit of a gaff on my behalf. Shows how long since I’ve used a new laptop!!
I corrected myself in subsequent videos and even picked up the Lenovo USB-C Dock which is awesome.
ua-cam.com/video/cWIIq0-zvSo/v-deo.html
how noisy is it? if i'm watching youtube at night and it's really quiet around me, will i be able to hear the fan on this thing?
@@eotikurac No. The fan only kicks in when you're using 30%+ of the CPU. UA-cam only uses 5%.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thanks for your reply! Its a common error. My dad thought so at first too.
Yup
Which one would you recommend me to buy: the Lenovo E580 i5 Gen 7200 or Acer spin 3 i5?
Hey there. I haven’t use the Acer so can’t really comment on the comparison, however I’m really happy with my E580.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thank you 😊
👍
Is it worth buying in 2022? I planned to buy 2nd hand
Getting a little long in the tooth these days. My daughter uses mine now. Still running well but not the fastest.
@@PeteJohnsMusic But do you think it can handle CADs and a little gaming like valorant?
Im amout to buy a second hand lenovo e580 15 7th gen. Tho it doesnt have a fingerprint scanner. Does it mean its fake?
All post i've seen on fb market place are the same (no finger print scanner)
And im thinking it might be fake models from the same supplier.
Need help.
Hey there. The fingerprint sensor was an optional extra that I chose when I ordered the laptop so these are probably fine.
Would you recommend the ThinkPad E480 for Ableton Live with i5-8250U Processor?
Hey there. I haven’t actually used Ableton personally so can’t give you a definitive answer, but from what I’ve heard about it, the i5 should definitely work for you. I would also suggest you get as much RAM as possible.
@@PeteJohnsMusic thanks for the quick reply. I am concidering getting the E480. I had an ASUS before but the motherboard died. :(
Bummer! For the price, you get a lot of bang for your buck with the Lenovo E range!
You can swap the functions of the Fn and Ctrl keys in the BIOS.
Hey Pete,
I've been reading some reviews about this notebook and the main issue that people brought up was that it heats a lot.
Thanks for the feedback too. I’m not sure if I just got lucky with mine then??

I found out the solution. If anyone requires, do following,
Go to Intel's "Graphic Options",
then Power,
then select Power Source as Battery.
Then disable Display Refresh Rate Switching option.
Now flickering won't happen.
Nice!!!! Great tip and thanks for sharing. 👍
Hello, can you please tell me more about the heat management in your latop. Some says it gets heat a lot. is it true for your laptop too. Is there any throttling under midium load...
Anyone can help me ,, which is better to choose (e-480 or e-590) for programming and youtube watching ,, both have core i5 8250U ,, 4 gb ram ,, 1T hdd ,, and i will upgrade it to a 8 gb ram and a 120 gb ssd ,, i like small sizes more than bigger one ,, and the 400 series are 14” and the 500 series are 15” ,, and can anyone tell me in general which series is better 400 or 500 😁🙌 please help me before i buy this 🤗
As a pro laptop, you sometimes use it in public while working on confidential stuff so not being able To see what’s going on the screen from thé side is a good thing from my pov
Sure thing! There are screen cover devices that can actually focus the viewing angle too. I’m lucky enough that my work is rarely confidential but for someone needing privacy,, a wide viewing angle may indeed be a drawback not an advantage.
Pete Johns thanks for your answer, keep on with your good videos & good vibes!
well, im subscribed.
Nice one! Thanks so much my friend.
Agreed.
Just go here and enter the model number of your laptop - www.crucial.com/
It’s how I found that my laptop had two slots, each of which could support a 16gb stick of RAM.
@@PeteJohnsMusic Thank you mate
Very welcome. 🙏
Do you think this could handle UE4?
It does have a 2gb dedicated Radeon graphics chip however it is not exactly a powerhouse when it comes to 3D gaming. It would probably do okay but not in the league of an actual gaming laptop.
how do you play a game on this when the cpu is locked at 1.6Ghz? and thermal throttle that kicks in right away
???
Hi there. I don’t really use it for gaming - more for audio and video production.
@@PeteJohnsMusic i understand. what game did you play when you tested it?
It won't do that if you use the correct video adapter.
@@nilpo19 wait what do you mean? do you have something i can read or can you explain?
Pete, you just need use the usb-c to hdmi port to extend to multiple external monitors.....Thank me later....
Hi, what do you recommend L580 or E580?
I went for the E580 personally. I liked the combination of powerful specs and good value.
hi sir i have thinkpad e580 i want to install M.2 PCIe VNMe 256 .Kindly you suggest me which one use (m.2 pcie nvme )Becuse on net too much people face problem with this because compatible issue.I m very thank full you if you will be help me thanks a lot
Hi there. I’m afraid I’m far from an expert when it comes to installing drives and their compatibility. Hopefully someone else can help you out.
Do you still need help? I know whats up.
15:11 you can play a game on this? what games are we talking about can you give a example? can't imagine they would be demanding at all
Trades too much performance for a not so respectable increase battery life. Overall a good buy for business oriented people as long as it is on sale/good price. otherwise with the money there are better choices. thanks for the review tho
Yep. Agree with pretty much all of that. 👍
Thanks for the response, Pete! I see I see. Good to know Windows suits your work well!
Thats the case for now anyway. Check back in a few months and you’ll probably find me rocking a MacBook. 😄
Jacob JGR The only valid answer to that question would be Louis Rossman
because macs are overprices bullsh*t and noone who has a working brain with enough oxygen would buy a macbook. not even a used one.
Hmm ... No information about keyboard backlight. Anyone?
Is it good for gaming?
Hey there. It does okay for some games, but I wouldn't suggest using it if you are in to extremely resource intensive 3D games.
slowest, worst computer I've used, even after an 8 gig ram update
Haven’t had many issues with it personally but appreciate your feedback.
Anyone have issue screen blank for 2 second when you turn off the charging plug?? Need help here...
Does it fold backwards into a tablet?
Hi there. No, this model is just a standard laptop with a standard (non touch) screen.
I got E580 i7 8550u-8gb-rx 550 2gb but the display resolution not showing 1080p 😩
That’s very strange? On the built in screen or an external display? Make sure you have updated to the latest video drivers.
Did you buy the 13xx x 9xx (not sure and I cant check rn) or the 1920x1080 display?
anyone use it for vmware workstations VMs?
subbed!
Thanks my friend! I have some more videos about the E580 coming soon, as well as a heap more audio and video content. 👍
Hi have you encountered error 43 on radeon rx 550? I need help
Hey there. I haven’t sorry? What’s the circumstances that this is popping up?
Pete Johns i have no idea, i just encountered the error ,also using e580
Yeah right. No, haven’t had any issues with graphics or the video card. Have you updated to the latest Radeon drivers?
Pete Johns what’s the version of your driver for you radeon rx 550, can you send me copy? I will try to install
Hey there. I just went to the AMD website (www.amd.com) and clicked through to detect and download the latest drivers so that’s what I would suggest you do.
Someone called "Tamara wedell6" has uploaded this video with their own affiliate links
Really? Thanks for the heads up. I’ll check my content matches and flag this one. Appreciate it my friend.
IS he good for gaming like e_sport games ?
Hey there. It has a decent processor, screen and graphics card, but is not really designed as a gaming laptop. It owuld be fine, but there are probably better options.
You'll want a 120hz + monitor for any e-sports, you won't find that in a business orientated laptop.
it would probably overheat. I don't recommend office laptops for gaming.
For Gaming?
Not really optimised for gaming sorry.
@@PeteJohnsMusic ohh you saved my money!! Thanks mate 💙

thank you.
Hey there. I believe there is a backlit keyboard option available but I don’t have it.
I haven’t gone in to the boot menu for a while so can’t remember this. Maybe enter, F1 or space bar? Hopefully someone else can chime in.
Boot menu > F 12 , UEFI > F 10
Brilliant! Thanks for the help.
Can it run league of legends Without lag?
Hey there. I haven’t played that game on this machine. The only gaming it tends to get is when my kids are playing Roblox or The Sims, which it doesn’t fine with. 😊
what about noise and heat up issues?

I have the i7 version. You can take a look at more details in my other videos about this laptop here - ua-cam.com/play/PLc8Xg_23Wa56qFWUpVmUyuCRYumlXiJ1S.html

Pete Johns thank you again. Just finished this first video, will check out the next two you sent. I actually pulled the trigger since Lenovo was having a Black Friday sale. Wish I saw your videos first! Since I didn’t NotebookCheck gave it a good review which swayed me, but you’re giving me a good real world idea. Thank you!
Nice one. Spoiler alert - I really like mine still. For the price, you get amazing specs and it runs well. Speakers are not amazing, and can noise is a little louder than other laptops, but in terms of value and reliability, I’m still a happy camper.
is it good for using virtual machines??
Thanks for providing this feedback! 👍
move the laptop not the camera
Thanks for the tip.
Disappointing battery life. I was looking for at least 10 hours.
Thanks for your feedback. I tend to get anywhere from 4 up to 8 hours depending on what I’m running. The battery life stated on the manufacturer specs always seems to be quite overstated so I take that with a grain of salt.
The E580 comes with a lithium-polymer battery - not a lithium-ion. The battery will last a lot longer, just won't have as much capacity.
have cd room plz
Hi there. No, this model doesn’t not have a CD or DVD drive.
Use gloves 👍🏼
When using the laptop if is this just general advice for life? 😊
