I see a bunch of people asking about it being VRR. I think I mentioned it but ended up editing it out due to a sneeze and forgot to say it on the next take. Now Lenovo doesn't specifically say VRR but they do say this - the display is also adjustable to playstyle and situation, supporting resolutions from 1600p to 800p as well as 144Hz and 60Hz refresh rates. Which I'm betting means VRR, but perhaps I'm wrong.

@@VisceralMonkey504 If it's a portrait display as some have suggested then v-sync can be turned off especially with 144Hz. Our eyes can detect screen tears going across the screen easier than vertically. I turn v sync off on the steam deck.
Since Ally has a landscape display then Vrr is more helpful not having to rely on v-sync.

at 18:35 , just so you know, I play most of my PC games with PS3 Nav controller + reWASD for remapping(hold, double tap, etc.) + mouse. I really don't like the keyboard part of KBM, fat fingers the wrong buttons, I mostly only use WASD/Jump/Crouch the rest is remap on my mouse and as a 3D animator I'm 8 hours+ on a keyboard. I didn't find anything better than this, other device have their D-pad way out, but PS3 Nav controller have the d-pad so it can be press with the bottom of your thumb while on the joystick.

I was an early adopter of the Rog Ally... and that whole bitter experience (dont ask).. burned me on being an early adopter... I would love to pick up the Legion Go.. but this time.. I'm going to wait a few months, until its capabilities, and the inevitable early bugs, are understood, and make a more informed decision.

I get what you are saying but I have to ask what issues did you have with the Rog Ally? I've only had 1 issue with it which was a bluescreen but it's windows and I've had that before.
I've had no issues and it is what I expected. Battery life could have been better but it's a 1st gen and I get what I expected out of it.
All the games I play, Cyberpunk, F1 22, Forza Horizon and Halo MCC as my mine games at the moment but looking forward to playing Stacraft and Forza Motorsport on it over the next few months.
I play it mostly in handheld but bought a dock for it with a 2tb ssd in and use this for long gaming sessions.
I also use it for pickup and play games with my 5 year old in Minecraft, Turtles and Rocket league. All games run amazing on it too. I also use my 1TB Sd card for Emulators.
I know we all use the different.
As for what I prefer ide say the Go was more at the kids market and the Ally was more at the adult market. That said I like the idea of using the controller as a mouse definitely a great idea.

Same for me. I was late to the handheld pc space. I actually didn't even get the deck until after I returned the ally. I pre-ordered it and had a ton of issues. So I am probably going to wait a few years until I get another one. I'm hoping they will have a handheld windows version by then and the chipset will be better. Although the ally burned me I'm still extremely excited about this space.

Thoughts in regards to design cycles:
    a) Large companies like these can afford to have some sort of customisable prototype design on the back burner just for an opportunity to enter the market, doesn't mean they've been _actively_ working on it all this time
    b) Few PC handhelds strive for some kind of revolutionary design, there's already a ton of basic designs to crib from in the market.
    c) ROG Ally's structural design issues like the "killer" positioning of the SD Card port show that there may not be as much prototype design testing going on as we might hope.

It's bigger and heavier than the Steam Deck, feels like a step backwards in terms of portability. ROG Ally is safe in that way at least - Specs are also very similar. I think it's pretty simple,
They saw the success of the switch, they wanted to dip into that market but going against the big 3 gaming companies wouldn't make sense and wouldn't be profitable.
Then they saw the Steam deck enter the fray, instead of making an entirely new gaming console, they just used laptop parts to make it into a dedicated gaming laptop with a custom OS.
Then they saw the ROG Ally embrace the laptop mind-set with Windows, Lenovo was already creating their Legion device, but this solidified that they had a market for repurposing laptop parts into a gaming machine that they can upsell as a dedicated gaming device. But make no mistake, these devices are just laptops.
Pretty simple when you think about it from a different perspective.

The Liquid crystal polymer fan is not marketing mumbo-jumbo. It's the material used in the highest end fans on the market (Noctua, Phanteks T30) LCP allows the blades to have a much tighter tolerance to the frame, improving airflow at lower rpm. To my knowledge, its never been used in a laptop, let alone a handheld.

Evolution-wise, I would say that cell phone gaming might have prompted the Nintendo Switch. Once that blank space on the map previously marked 'Ere be Dragons' was mapped by Nintendo, other companies would have seen the potential, some maybe to drop the idea and others in the pipeline as yet unseen. I always thought there was more potential for a handheld iGame from Apple than a watch! I suspect Lenovo saw the weaknesses in the Switch as well as the strengths and went one route whereas Valve went a different one. VHS and Beta again or will we see a place for both styles of handheld in the market based on user preference?

What ever happens, I will stay with the Steam Deck. Don't get me wrong, I love the bigger screen! But I am still hoping for a Steam Deck II, which maybe has a OLED screen. Valve supported the deck really good. And I am not someone with a lot technical knowledge, but when I just only look to the looks of this device, I get a Nintendo Switch deja vu with cramps in my fingers. Also I never used the joycons separate from the system itself, but it feels over time rickety anyway, so I prefer the controllers and screen as one system.
But I think Lenovo is aiming for the Steam Deck / PC users and not for the Switch users, if they did that they would have made a pc handheld many years ago. Just my two cents. Also parents wouldn't be very happy with a price tag of €749,= when they have 3 kids. 😅

With me I think both the Ally and the Legion Go are both a response to the Steam Deck and the Switch at the same time but the Legion go is more of a response to the Switch than the Steam Deck because of the detachable controllers vs the Ally which is 50% a response to the Switch and the Steam Deck due to the portable gaming aspect of it due to the controllers not being detachable. One could argue that the Ally and the Steam Deck are more of a response to the Switch Lite rather than the full blown Switch Since the controllers on the light are NOT detachable. Plus the Legion Go has a kickstand on it just like the full blown Switch. If had the extra cash I would get an Legion Go because it looks so appealing to me because I think it would be perfect for both Wii and Switch emulation because of the detachable controllers that it has. Also you can emulate a Wiimote using a mouse which would be perfect for Wii-emulation.

So far this thing looks amazing. I'm curious about reliability though. If that isn't an issue, it'll definitely have a huge advantage over the Ally. I want a PC handheld but haven't found the "right one" so far. If the reviews are positive for the Go I will definitely get it.

many reviewers seem to miss the mark when it comes to VRR like its not all that important, but these handhelds are weak, you would think they are AAA powerhouses the way some reviewers talk about them but they are super weak by pc gaming standards so things like VRR play a huge role in making low framerate gaming a pleasing experience, with VRR comes low framerate compensation and with VRR you also have the ability to adjust the range for the ideal experience. Lenovo were advertising VRR and its suddenly vanished from the marketing, that was either a very dodgy marketing move to get the hype rolling (particularly against the ally which ofcourse has VRR) or... they fluffed up quite bad, its a significant loss to the system without VRR. Rumor has it that they are locking the power limit down to 20w also which indicates they are not confident in the cooling capabilities of the system they have built, yet to hear more on this though. edit: lenovo website claims ''a full 25w'' not 20, so thats not too bad, but still less than many competing handsets with the same hardware.

The ROG Alley and Legion Go are both a response to the Steam Deck. Although we don't know about these things until they are near release these companies know about what the other companies are doing at least a year a head of us. Companies have to release patents and all kinds of other things for their designs years before a product is even being developed. And the other companies are always checking to see what the other guys are working on. This is why a lot of similar products come out at the same time. If they take too long to release theirs then people will buy what is available and the company lose market share by the time their product is released. PS 4 did this launching their consoles as soon as possible at least 6 months before Xbox. And that made a lot of people move to PS 4 and had much higher early sales than the xbox.

Handhelds on the scale of Go and Ally takes years of R&D they aren't going to rush a product to mass distribution to potentially lose tens if not more millions of dollars to try to cash in on what is still a niche device the Steam Deck. These aren't devices being made off pre-orders/backing, they aren't devices being made to be sold to 1000 people like a lot of these windows handhelds are these are 2 major companies wanting to get into that market.
These devices probably went into R&D 4-5 years ago it just so happened Steam beat them to market and these won't be the last companies we see doing this we will other computer manufacturers doing this i would be shocked if Dell/HP didn't dip their toes into this. It's an additional market for something they are already into.

A lot of people said that the price of the steam deck was the end of the debate, and now that there is a ridiculous amount of competition all coming out around the same time those same people are experiencing severe buyers remorse. The american consumer market has such a bad habit of being impatient. I was playing games via stream from my phone like 2 years or more before the steam deck came out. Seeing the specs and seeing that they were significantly worse than my phone even, i knew there had to be more. We also like to back companies like they are our favorite football team, not a business selliin a product

I feel you but the Steam Deck is still king. 699 base model for the Go is higher than the price of the highest model for the Steam Deck. That's a big ask for the average consumer. Also the Steam Deck is already huge this thing (the Go) is not travel friendly with the size and weight it carries, and it runs windows which has its own slew of issues. The biggest plus for the Go is no worry on anti cheat support but yeah no buyers remorse here or fanboying on the Steam Deck. We all came to game...well aside from the guys adding water cooling etc to mobile pcs lol

@@Espodude17 V-sync causes lag but screen tearing is a lot less noticeable on a portrait display so I leave it turn off on the Deck. There isn't much advantage to VRR when not using V-sync. If you use v-sync at 40 fps with 60 hz monitor then every other frame is repeated and doesn't look as smooth which is why most consoles games are locked at 30 fps or 60 fps.
Without v-sync on this isn't a problem but screen tearing is very noticeable on a landscape display. Thus VRR is more important on a landscape display than a portrait display as how our eyes "sees".
Since Ally has a landscape display VRR is more useful.

What exactly is going on with the specs, one minute they are reporting a 144hz VRR display the next they seem to be ducking out on VRR which is a pretty big miss - not least because im hearing its also going to be capped at 20w max. If true this kind of sounds like a recipe for disaster, games already clearly struggle on ally, even with 30+watts cranking its often not enough to really truly make bigger games run ''smooth'' but its much nicer to play at 50fps with VRR for example than without VRR where its a mess.
So like whats the story here, seems they have for sure removed VRR from all marketing. It seems many manufacturers are banking on big screens and missing what makes playing the game a more pleasing experience, especially on handheld devices that are pretty damn weak truth be told and the net downside to that screen size seems to be the weight, this thing is chonky by any handhelds metrics, when were talking heavier than a steam deck which is already the size of a toddlers skateboard its a significant negative, i have a deck and ally and i do need to lean on something with deck, hands not be hovering out in front of you for long with that haha.
For those reasons and the fact its just another 7840u handheld in what is now a sea of these things ill just wait it out 12 months for the next flood of 8000 series updates.
EDIT: lenovo website states ''a full 25w, not 20w''. The website also says it supports 144hz and 60hz refresh rates, putting to bed the idea of variable refresh, thats a shame.

But this isn’t the grand scheme of things, this isn’t a weight on a bar, this is a gaming device, we as people who lift heavy weights also know 5kg is nothing, but does that mean a 5kg handheld is no problem because we are people who can lift massively more… no, that’s not how this works right, you know it and I know it.
When comparing a handheld we are comparing it to other handhelds. I have a steam deck and rog ally, and the steam deck is about as large and heavy id like a handheld to be, even though I can lift wayyyy more it still comes down to how they compare to other handhelds and what that means when you are sitting in bed playing a game, that few hundred grams is the difference between leaning on your knees or not.

But those units where more of a purchase and you are on your own if you had any issues. Then Valve comes out with this unit and people are talking about it, many are enjoying the device and Valve can't keep up with demand. NOW other manufacturers noticed and want a piece of the pie. Now I do think the Steam Deck is a reaction to Nintendo's Swith.
