    When a handheld struggles to hit a stable 60fps Vrr is the best solution for a smooth feeling gameplay the rog ally does this beautifully but I guess Lenovo wanted to keep the cost down to aggressively compete with the ally. 😢
    If the legion go turn out to be a micro stutter mess then this is a deal breaker for me. But I want this device so bad.

      It's pretty hard to source a native landscape display. This is using a tablet screen and most portables stick to that portrait format even the steam deck they are easier to source. The price probably would have went way up so I think it is a happy compromise at $699 considering we thought this was going to be way more expensive. To think the regular Z1 will be cheaper blows the mind.

    For text heavy turn based rpgs it would be nice. But for anything action heavy I'd probably just lower it to 720p (or even lower) to maintain real 60fps as much as possible. Performance >>> resolution.

  • @Kanecobond

    If it had VRR, it would be PERFECT... especially for aggressively changing framerates and to have as low-latency as possible. I want to jump on this device after getting the ROG Ally, because it has everything the ROG Ally could use, and even has the Touch/Trackpad of the Steam Deck that it sorely misses... and double USB Type Cs that I don't why they never thought it wasn't essential in the previous devices for both charging and connecting anything else besides the charging cable and at the bottom of all places that would be perfect for a Switch-like docking manner.
    Also detachable controls which turns the system into just a tablet, with a BUILT-IN kickstand a la Switch OLED style, is SOOOOO attractive. I don't know why the other two didn't think of adding a built-in kickstand... you have the Switch, you have the blueprint for features to consider. I'm surprised they neglected those things... Now my question is, will Lenovo's UI windows interface be superior than the ROG Ally's Armoury Crate under Windows OS, we will have to wait and see... I'm cautiously excited, the lack of VRR is kinda of a bummer to me though.

      To be honest, the Ally isn’t perfect either: Micro SD card reader that is almost guaranteed to fail if you use it long term, narrow color coverage, and VRR adds display latency. VRR is a buzzword that sometimes people too much focus on when it is the sum of the parts of the display’s abilities, including color coverage, which is a clear step up here, that make the difference.

    i watched a video recently that showed the ally now performing significantly better than the steam deck at 10w... only 10w though, the video didn't detail 6/7/8/9w performance which is likely still going to favour the deck but who knows. I think it shows that perhaps retesting the devices after recent updates is important before parroting that the steam deck performs better still at lower wattage because that may not be the case anymore.
    As for the legion go, yes VRR is a deal breaker, particularly on a handheld device we know isn't very powerful, we may pretend the 7840u is almighty but its really not, the majority of bigger AAA games we have to play below 60fps, its a handheld reality. With that in mind i think the biggest dealbreaker for the lenovo is its just another 7840u in what is now a huge ocean of 7840u devices... is nobody just sick of one after the other after the other of the same core hardware wrapped in clothing it really cant take advantage of, i mean a 7840u paired with a 144hz 1600p screen, really?
    How many more 7840u's are they going to cram into handhelds before the year is out and before you know it they are talking about 8000 series and we start the train up again. There is really nothing compelling about spending another close to £1000 on another 7840u handheld, who is doing that and why, buy one and wait 12 months for updated hardware, you are nuts buying multiple different versions of these things knowing how short a time it really is for a meaningful hardware update not the same thing in different clothes.

      Please cite the video that shows the Ally beating the SD at 10W. Gamer's Nexus just dropped a video that shows the Ally marginally beating the SD (even losing at times) at 15W.

    • @jinx20001
      @jinx20001 11 місяців тому

      @@elementxc I will try to find the video sometime today, I absolutely for sure seen a video showing this.
      The gamers nexus video for the most part was great but rather unusually for Steve he does not actually ever specifically state which bios version he was using when doing performance testing only that they were using the ''latest drivers'', he did point out that “some users were experiencing issues with bios 319” and that he could not stop the bios updating to 319 on their unit and he also showed early in the video that the bios in use at that time was 319 so we must assume their testing was done on 319… he did briefly show a screen showing the bios 323 being available but we don’t know if they updated to that before performance testing or if performance testing was already done, we would like to think that it was the very latest version of all updates but we can’t be sure because he only ever specifically states they were forced to update to 319 and so we’re using 319.
      From my understanding they have been testing this product for quite some time so who knows, the ally has had very specific updates to boost performance at 15w specifically way after 319 was released and there are videos out there showing a specific bump at 15w putting it way ahead of steam deck at that wattage now.
      I’ll do my best to get those videos linked today, just on school runs etc lol

    • @jinx20001
      @jinx20001 11 місяців тому

      @@elementxc i think the video i was referencing about 10w was the recent ayaneo 2s review done by digital foundry where they showed (in one specific game mind) that the 10w performance had jumped significantly for ally over deck, before the recent updates the ally was trailing massively something like 30fps vs 60fps on deck in that game but now on latest updates the ally is around 20fps ahead in that same test... it is ofcourse only one game and test though but does indicate improvement at low wattage.
      in the same video they show that 15w performance in general is close in some games while taking a bigger lead on ally in other games but if you watch videos comparing deck vs ally, specifically later ally updates you will see most games do perform better on ally at 15w, not all ofcourse but many.
      When it comes to the gamers nexus video its likely steve was using the latest bios, i cant imagine they wouldn't but its difficult to say because they do indicate using 319 and show it being used in the bios early in the video before later stating before performance tests that they used the latest update. i suspect they did update, they are smart enough to do so and it was likely just the results of their specific game selection.

    Just as a reminder VRR is used to eliminate tearing without adding latency and stuttering. Nothing more and nothing less
    Another way to eliminate tearing is to use vsync which can introduce latency and stuttering depending on the screen refresh rate. For a 60Hz screen, with vsync and double buffering, the fps can range between 60, 30, 20, 15... which is annoying and introduces a maximum latency of approximately 16ms. With a 144Hz screen the fps can range between 144, 72, 48, 36, 28.8, 24, ... and the latency is as much as 7ms so the latency and stuttering are much less noticeable. With "triple buffering" is even better.
    The biggest problem with this screen is that it will not be landscape and the battery consumption at 144Hz. This will be partially offset by the use of vsync since it can saves some battery.
    Steam deck this makes it very simple. If you select 60HZ and limit it to 30 fps, you know that if the GPU at some point does not reach 30 and you do not allow tearing, it will be 20fps. If you set 30Hz and 30fps if it does not reach 30 it will be 15. 40Hz and 40fps allowing tearing is also a good solution.

  • @infasis

    If it doesn't have VRR that's a huge downside for me. I guess, I never did try Freesync, as I have a monitor that comes with the expensive Gsync chip (not just the "compatible" one), but if it feels that smooth then I would love that experience on a handheld.
    The funny thing is on my desktop I often wouldn't really need it as much, because I could lock it to 60fps, (although when games like Starfield come along it basically is the only thing making the game playable for me), but on handhelds, where even stable 30fps can be hard to achieve, VRR is a feature that's unfortunately not very common.

      The main case for the 144fps screen is exactly as Dave2d showed it: Competitive Shooters. Things like Fortnite, Overwatch, Valorant, COD etc will actually be perfectly playable on the Legion Go with its sizable 8'8 screen, sturdy built in kickstand, then the detachable controllers with one turning into a competent vertical mouse (Dave2d said after getting acclimated to it he believes he would be able to retain his Grandmaster rank in Overwatch with it), and then the 144hz will actually matter since the Z1 Extreme with Lpddr5x at 7500mhz should pretty easily be able to hit that constantly with lowered settings (which all Pro players use even with the highest end systems). There is no handheld even remotely close to as good as the Legion Go for shooters or competitive games, since its the only one that can BY ITSELF (i.e without external monitor, mouse/keyboard etc) play them well enough.

      Good and hope you get the device that serves your needs best! For me, I am totally fine without it. The display’s still image quality (thanks to almost 100% DCI-P3 coverage) is a step above the Ally’s so it is an acceptable tradeoff for me. I also know that like VSync, VRR is known to add display latency so while it may add some fluidity in certain scenario, you add several frames of latency which can be make-or-break in competitive titles.

      VRR many times adds latency which is what the Lenovo representative Sergey explained. This is why eSports players often will display VSync and VRR so they have maximum display latency. The upside here is the Legion Go offer nearly 100% DCI-P3 color coverage, meaning colors will absolutely ooze radiance and vibrancy. For someone like me who could care less about VRR up until the Ally fans touted its virtues, as long there is no ghosting like the Ally, trading VRR for color range is a fair swap.

    When it comes handheld screens, the ultimate one for me would be an 8" OLED screens with a VRR range from 20Hz to 60Hz (rather than high refreshrate). And being able to lock framerate to any number within that range... That way you can lock to a framerate that will offer good battery life, but the VRR would take care of small dips, even into the 20's... and honestly 120Hz+ for scrolling text on your phone is nowhere near the same use case as panning a camera in-game. Especially if the game is running at 720p/800p. Higher refreshrates really only become important with higher resolutions as there are more information loss in-between frames... On a Steam Deck, 60fps feels pretty much like a 144Hz desktop display, the reason being that there fewer pixels or smaller space in-between every rendered frame compared to the same refreshrate at 1440p or 4K.

    It would probably have been too perfect with VRR after hitting the amazing $700 price point (and only $750 for 1tb!). For me it ticks off every box otherwise, with maybe only a 49.2wh battery being a bit smaller than optimal (albeit still much better than the paltry 40wh on steam deck/Ally). Love the 8'8 screen, amazing controls, trackpad, ability to detach controllers and use one as an effective mouse. Only question is should I finally buy a Handheld this year, or wait for Strix Point in ~8-9 months when inevitably there will be a Legion Go 2 ready to to go.
    Also with the Glasses being lowered to only $329, I'm curious how they work and if it would be a substitute for an actual monitor, such as when playing Strategy Games like Civilization or whatever (which even on an 8'8 screen would be far from optimal). I just have no experience with those type of glasses, so not sure how viable they would be. Maybe they will be on display in Best Buy and one can try them out as well as get hands on with the Legion Go.

    Most ally screens are capable of overclocking to 144hz, some people can’t hit it. You can up the vrr to 144 and also lower it down to usually at least 20 something. That said most games can’t get there even at 720p and the ones that do will still bounce around and drop down into the 120s 130s here and there which isn’t noticeable with vrr but obviously would be horrible without it. A lot of brand new games can’t do even 40 much less 60 at 720p with a 7840u so they are going to be a terrible experience unless you lock your fps for the lowest a game goes for each individual game

    This is definitely the best handheld released so far, I'd compare it to a smaller version of the Asus Flow Z13. Get a lapdesk and you can play in bed with the controllers detached. Lenovo does have quite a few sales at the end of the year, so if I can get a good cashback or better yet a nice discount, then I can overlook the VRR screen. I want bigger and the Lenovo Legion Go seems to scratch that big screen itch. I do worry about that extra weight though. So I flip back and forth trying to justify which benefits and comprises would best serve. Get a chunky 8.8" brick or a sexy 7" hot pocket that's worse in other areas but so damn clutch. @@tomoprime217 For me, I don't like how the dpad and face buttons are inset. I also don't like the small battery life on the gpd win mini. To me, the win max 2 is better in every way except portability (they both need grips to be conmfortable)
      Maybe we should wait for the review of legion go before pulling the trigger on GPD now :)

    Is the hardware not significantly better in the legion go than in the steam deck? Obviously, it won't have a problem hitting 60hz for most big games, no?
