I think I owned Witcher 3 for two or three years before I finally sat down and pushed through the beginning and finally got into the story to the point where I began to enjoy the mechanics and the world itself. 150 hours later, I finally finished the game and it became one of my favorite games ever, but I completely understand your point and frustration.

Are you saying even if you ignore the side content, optional treasure hunts, exploration, etc. the mechanics still get exhausting? Only about 24% of players beat Witcher 3, that's lower than average. Just curious. I bought Witcher 3 in 2016 after beating Witcher 1 & 2. I've been playing every year on and off. For me, the game is great, but it's simply a long game. The difficulty is getting through Witcher alongside 20-30 other games each year

@@jimbryant2157 That is the same exact way I was with TW3. I played it right after Blood & Wine came out and it took me a couple of attempts to finally get into it and understand all of the systems to the point that I started enjoying it.
I've tried doing the same thing with Elden Ring but I just can't get into it the same way. TW3 boss difficulties were hard and punishing but none ever felt like they were going to take me 30-50 deaths to figure out and overcome like Elden Ring. I just can't get into it because of that.
TW3 though, once you understand everything is incredibly incredibly good and fun once you get into it but you have to push past the feelings of being overwhelmed.

Russ, I went at Elden Ring no guides because I didn't want spoilers. It was fun and the since of discovery was AMAZING! Also it lead to unforgettable moments where I felt so silly for not realizing something sooner, and it's hilarious to think back to.
However, playing the game with no guides has made me take forever at some segments of the game so far. There are bosses that'll literally make you feel insecure like you're a loser lol and you're stuck thinking, "do I suck that bad or am I missing somethig?"
My advice would be to go as far as you can on your own and make your own experience. If you get stuck on a boss that you feel is unbeatable, go exploring because there's so much to discover. If you ever feel like the game is getting so hard that you're going to drop it, then look up what you can do to make life easier and put some wind in your sails. Don't judge your gameplay compared to what you see elsewhere, because many of those people aren't playing raw like that. You will eventually look something up, and that's completely fine. It's almost insane not to.
In short, you can make the game much easier at the sacrifice of some of your own discovery experiences. Do your best to balance that. Good luck, Man!

The beauty of ER for new soulsborne players is that you aren't stuck at one single boss before you can proceed, like in Bloodborne or their other titles. Stuck? Struggling? Go explore. You'll always find something which will be able to to help. That said, learning how the core mechanics of the game is necessary to truly achieve. It takes time and patience. Learning. It's very rewarding experience and teaches a lot of patience.

I've never heard it called theory crafting as you stated but yeah I'm pretty crappy at it, but the reason I'm not so great isn't because I don't have the skill to do it well, it's because pretty much every single time there are items or talismans that are part of the recipe which I don't currently possess and have no knowledge of their existence. If I were able to own every piece of equipment in the game than I would have the ability to look at them all and synergize them together effectively. So just like Bill said I do watch guides and when the guy shows an item that I don't have I'm like oh snap I didn't know about that and then I go get it.

In regards to Elden Ring, and game 'difficulty' in general, I try to go in and figure it out on my own, and then if I get stuck I'll look up tips and tricks. That being said, I went through Dark Souls 1 and Dark Souls 2 not really understanding the builds and stats and 'soft caps'. It wasn't until I decided to sit down and figure stuff out in ER that I started to understand the scaling and nuances to leveling up.
On the flip side I started Horizon Forbidden West and for some reason I decided to play on the hardest difficulty and it is SO tough that I ended up dropping the game because it felt like a chore to go through and I'm several hours in, so I don't want to restart from the beginning even though I know it will be so much easier. Also from my experience in Zero Dawn, I knew that as I progressed through the game I became significantly powerful to the point where the game felt really easy, and while that was enjoyable I went into Forbidden West thinking that I would have a similar experience but I'm kind of regretting it, even though I am making progress, albeit slowly. I do intend to go back and finish the game, but it's one of those things were you have to play at a really high level to be successful, and I find myself having to repeat sections and boss fights repeatedly which is frustrating because I know I could be having an easier (and presumably more enjoyable) time on a lesser difficulty.

I recently canceled GP as well. Realized "i saved myself 60 bucks by being able to try this game an not buy it, and its not for me" is a pretty bad argument in the face of being able to go to yiur local library and rent games for free....youd be surprised on how recent a catalogue a library might carry.
Now its the argument is "why pay 10-20 bucks a month to try games out".
Between free month trials and the change to having to go to the library to look through games, its really helped focus my library. It also forces the family and kids to check out this magical place with books and some retro games they can actually grab and get excitrd to play. Just listened to the part about the metal analog pocket. It's very expensive, but the scaling that works for this type of manufacturing is a bit different. Machining or milling metal shells and parts and then anodizing them is a much different process over making a book or manufacturing a plastic shell. A lot of other factors to consider. Also, the comparison to aftermarket shells is also fair but not equal. The aftermarket shell for the AP is a sandwich design to help save on costs. Even if we are talking about all of this being done in China, it's still very expensive. I would have to assume that this took a very long time for them to do.
I agree that the price is HUGE and it's a premium product for a niche market, but the price does make sense for a fully assembled, fpga device, if it is indeed of a high quality.

My case, being my first soulsborne I went in very blind and naturally kept dying early - but once I got some idea how to farm runes it got a bit easier. When it comes to metal devices - metal is a very good conductor of heat, so even if the device itself is not generating that much heat, it will take heat from your own hands. When it's so small, it will not be able to radiate that heat to the environment (the air) so if you hold it for enough time, even without playing it, it will eventually match your hands temperature, which will make it feel warm. Now add to that the heat the device itself generate, and that warm feeling will come faster and it will continue increasing in temperature after that.
So yeah, such devices will feel at least warm if you play on it for like 1 or 2 hours.

Being in my 50s and playing computer games since the 80s, the biggest problem with games like Elden Ring makes me feel I’m wasting the final years of my real life rather than enjoying the game. I think it’s because in Elden Ring, I die (a lot) and I have to repeat stuff just to get back to where I started. Due to this I prefer more story based games where you progress through a game rather than repeating stuff.

One of the only reasons I considered modding my switch or emulating is because Nintendo do not let us backup saves on Switch. Before anyone says NSO that is not a real backup, Nintendo will delete your data randomly the moment you stop paying and the service will discontinue soon enough. Your data is held hostage on the console and the only option for redundancy is a transient paid service from a company with the worst reputation for online services. Its a scummy money grubbing tactic that should be illegal, my saves are my data, my propperty and I should be able to extract them.

Elden Ring can be as easy or as hard as you want. I will paste my steam review with my tips because I am too lazy to write it again
    Steam Review:
Bought Elden Ring on the 2024 Steam Summer Sale and put 78.2 hours on it somehow before the summer sale was over.
    TIPS FOR NEW PLAYERS:
    1. If you can't beat a boss, go somewhere else and explore and level and get more powerful weapons then come back. This is intended.
    2. Don't spread your stat points. Pick a specialty like Str, Dex, Int or Faith and go all in with only what you need to get by. Say you are an Int build and need 12 str to hold a weapon, get 12 str and no more.
    3. If you see gear on a mob, "most of the time" they can drop it. Farm mobs wearing the gear you want for easy gains.
    4. If you don't have an area of a map unlock, you can see where to unlock the map on the map.
    5. Different mobs take more or less damage to certain damage types. Heavy armor use strike damage, exposed flesh use slash, scales use pierce, standard damage works on most all just not as good.
    6. Any build can become broken if you push it far enough.
    7. Most bosses have a companion summon at the door if you really need it.
    8. There is no wrong way to play. Let trolls be trolls and have fun.
Bonus: Read the notes on the floor. Some are good, others are trolls.
    Fun and frustration ahead...

Humble choice is good, but I kind of had the same issue with it as what Bill describes about gamepass. I have way too many games in steam already and they just landed on the pile. And then I probably never play them. Even if I consciously decided to not pause my subscription it's just not the same as buying a specific game. And the longer something has been sitting in my library, the lower its value seems to become in my mind and it becomes harder and harder to ever start playing them. Same for fanatical bundles or sales in general.
So I mostly stopped buying bundles and subscriptions and scouring sales... I keep a wishlist and when I want a new game I look at it and just buy when I want to play it. I use a site that tracks a bunch of stores and most games are almost always on sale somewhere, but even if I pay a bit more outside of a sale I'm still saving money because I'm buying less games that I never play. And I enjoy the ones I do buy more.
I still have gamepass until next year somewhere but will probably not renew that either (unless I suddenly want to play on my Xbox a lot more again but I've been preferring PC and deck for a while now)

My two cents about analog sticks on Arcade games: they're not ideal if you're playing seriously. Analog sticks do not work the same as arcade sticks; Arcade sticks click on the 8 directions while analog sticks start the movement before reaching full travel (they're analog after all, designed mostly for 3D games). It's terrible for arcade games that require precision, such as shmups, because doing precise taps is much harder because of the travel issues. I use 100% d-pad for those games.

With Elden Ring and Fromsoft games in general, I feel like the community has completely ruined the discourse around it by over-hyping the difficulty and generally having way too strong opinions on how the game is supposed to be played that they pass off as objective fact. They're actually not that hard if you have any experience playing games like Monster Hunter or character action games (which aren't the easiest games to be fair). If the games had a bit better documentation or tutorials explaining some of the less intuitive RPG aspects and the marketing and community didn't focus on hyping the difficulty so much, I bet even more people would play them and the discourse wouldn't be so toxic. Also, the games have progressively become more broken (except Sekiro) because they have become impossible to properly balance for every playstyle. In Elden Ring especially it's too easy to pick something that is either accidentally holding you back or trivializing a lot of the game. They've been buffing *a ton* of mechanics since after launch, way more than they nerfed.

You absolutely can't just play your way and go with what you find, because it will be a horrible experience and everything will be needlessly difficult. The game expects you to look up where the actually good weapons are, completely hidden out of anyone's way, and make the correct build. Playing by yourself would mean you spend dozens of hours not having fun until you randomly stumble on worthwhile equipment. I guess that's fun to some people, but I'm good, thanks.

There's been a handful of games that nintendo pulled off shelfs early on, generally due to bad sales.
The DS makes a great case for why we should be fighting Nintendo in regards to preserving games, and especially goes to show that we can't just let them make 1 statement and go along with it.
2 DS games that I remember being pulled from shelves are 'Mario Hoops 3 on 3', and 'Super Princess Peach'.
People COULD make the argument that Mario hoops 3 on 3 is a bad game (and I'd agree), but Super Princess Peach is a great game and really should be talked about more and showcased more.
Regardless of which one is good or bad, both should be preserved; there's plenty of bad (or otherwise not worth playing) games that are important to video game history, and to that end ALL games need to be preserved.
I'd personally say nintendo isn't even in the right for fighting roms of games that are current, even though they legally have the grounds, seeing how things can just up and disappear or become unplayable the existence of roms for EVEN current should be legal in some way whether it's through organizations given specific rights/exclusions specifically for the purpose of the preservation of history.

I'm with Russ on Destiny. I jumped back to get ready for The Final Shape, just catching up & stuff and realized why I dropped. Is just too much dang loot, too much to do, too many builds. And the worst part (for me) is TOO MUCH TIME spent on inventory management. Using 3rd party apps is great and makes it easier, but is just too much spent on those menus instead of actually playing the game and shooting stuff. Seriously, it would take me at least 1hr setting up all bounties and preparing my gear before I start an activity. Then spend more time managing items & builds & loot after each activity. Nope

Big fan of the show, writing this to leave one message about destiny because I know how daunting it can be to join as a new player.
You can absolutely play it your way when it comes to weapons. Sure there’re “meta loadouts” when it comes to end game content, but a lot of the game can be played and enjoyed using whatever combinations you'd like!
The grind for gear is definitely real, but I wanted to bring to light that the game allows you to bring whatever piece of gear up to whatever the power cap is. You just got a stronger auto rifle but love this scout rifle you've been using? You can infuse it to gain the power level of that previous weapon!
Keep up the great work, Im a huge fan of this podcast.

I always prefer characters to keep their original names if they are given one. I want to know their name, and I would pass up that opportunity if I had changed it. If a character doesn't have a name, I play as myself. If they do have a name, I play as them, if that makes sense. I also hate the notion that I may end up liking the character and not know their given name. Even if I learn it afterward by Googling it, it's still not what that character was called for me during hours of playtime. It's not what I know them by, and I don't like that. It also saves me the trouble of thinking up a name, but that's not that important.

About the subscription part, I did the 2 years and half thing on gamepass and at the end... I NEVER touch those games because although they are on my radar, they are not on my priority list.
I have a 900 games backlog about 500 on steam and about 400 emulation. I'm not even buying games even if they are in offer, because I just realized that that one (or some) of those games in my wish list eventually ends up in humble bundle, just like A plage tale did, and most Yakuza games have
And for less than gamepass, that game is gonna be on my library when I get to it eventually.
Steam had made a system that companies are not gonna be fighting about my money. They gonna have to fight about my time and justify why should I pay $70 on your game day 1. When I have more than 500 reasons not to.

I see why Nintendo went after Yuzu, paywalling it and advertising it to run Tears of the Kingdom before launch, but this doesn't suddenly mean it's okay to go after all emulators.

I still use Steam Controller for 1-2 particular use cases:
    1. PC FPS games such as ie. Metro, or ... any kind of FPS. Why ? It is much more precise than typical gamepad. I can play FPS just like on the PC / Mouse combo - i can do quick camera movement, I can do headshots etc. I play like that using local streaming (wifi 6) and this makes actually a great combo with Steam Controller.
    2. Second usecase is similar as Steam Deck pads - older PC strategy or RPG games, that may be ie. too small for Steam Deck screen size, but might by good for 60'' TV with Steam Controller.
Personally, if your hmm "root" is PC then I really, really think that Steam Controller is still great in 2024. Don't get me wrong, i still have typical gamepad too (but it's mostly for emulation)

If I have to do that to complete a game on my first run through, then that for me ruins the whole experience going forward. Imagine playing a game and grinding your character and making him very powerful just to discover that he's not powerful enough to beat one particular boss unless you grind up some special power for just that boss. I quit that game on the beast clergyman. Beat the first part with fire but I don't have the special power to beat the second part. Ridiculous.

NerdNest, have you taken a look at flick stick? I'm a fan of trackpad + gyro, it's a huge part of the reason I prefer the Deck over other PC handhelds. BUT...I am trying out flick stick and I'm starting to get it. I think I might even go as far as to say that if I fully adopt it, then I would be able to get exactly the same quality of controls on other PC handhelds as I do on the Deck (as long as the device works well with gyro. I have a Win Max 2 as well, but I don't think I'd ever want to use gyro on that.) Interestingly, flick stick is kind of an equalizer for handhelds with smaller Switch-style analog sticks...because the thumbstick size isn't even a big factor any more.

At this point the forks of Yuzu were bound to be taken down because Yuzu is the Emulator that was taken down by Nintendo themselves. Also I heard that most of these forks of Yuzu weren't very good to begin with. Also I am not surprised that Nintendo took action because Yuzu as far as code goes is blacklisted which means you are taking a huge gamble using it to make your own version of Yuzu. Sudachi might have point of fighting it with Github since they changed the code and it's their original code and NOT the code of Yuzu.

"That has not been proven to be illegal" nothing in the law permits you to use and distribute cryptographic keys extracted from Nintendo to allow your emulator to run Nintendo games, that was Yuzu's mistake plus they were getting paid by people for it, so they're not just breaking Nintendo's encryption, they're providing a service that exists for the explicit purpose of doing that and playing their software on alternate hardware and additionally were getting paid for it.
Trust me you better hope Nintendo never has to fight this in court, because all it takes is Nintendo winning one case and emulation as a whole gets shut down across all consoles, and nobody wants that. Simply work around it, emulate the machines Nintendo isn't actively selling right now and they mostly will stay off your back, nobody ever went after NESticle you know?
Just pick your battles, putting Switch emulators which use stolen Nintendo cryptography on a rival handheld hardware platform and then selling that emulator for money is really stretching the concept of emulation to it's breaking point and pricking a tiger legally speaking and Nintendo has a lot of valid arguments as to why it's morally and thus legally problematic to allow it to continue, i can see Nintendo winning such court cases and upending the current status-quo so the last thing anyone should want is Nintendo filing lawsuits over this.
Not to mention on any Switch emulator even the ones that remain you need PROD keys that have to be taken from a Switch console, and that these ARE being distributed online and Nintendo can prove that in court, though Riujinx have never done this themselves like Yuzu did, they provide all the tools you'd need to do it yourself, it's classic blame shifting and a really grey grey-area legally speaking
If Nintendo successfully makes the argument that their hardware architecture is a kind of intellectual property similar to their software, then they manage to illegalize all emulation overnight and go after even older emulators for older consoles, nobody wants that to happen and it's fathomable that it might, so for me if Nintendo leaves the older emulators alone i don't mind not emulating their current platform, that sounds like a decent compromise and not a hill i'm willing to die on

The Analogue Pocket thing, I'm guessing, is eaten now. FunnyPlaying's FPGBC handles the GB/GBC nostalgia better (and much cheaper), at some point they'll do a GBA one (then a GBA SP one). Sure, the Pocket can play other stuff, which is nice, but we have soooo many devices that can do those systems, and there's not really nostalgia to have NES/SNES etc. on a handheld, since we exactly _didn't_ have thtat back then.

The only way I can think of to solve this is to make a law that makes it illegal to emulate systems that are still being sold on the market. My WII, which died a sad death, if it were still working would also not be able to buy new games. It's not like I enjoy spending 50 to 70 dollars for each game multiple times so I can keep playing them as the old consoles are no longer allowed to use the features they came with (the various online services, MII-verse stuff, for instance). I never bought a switch. I never will. Of course I don't have any Switch Games to emulate as a result. But this behavior by Nintendo has just turned me off from them and I will never spend another dollar with them.

I understand everyone who's angry about Nintendo doing what they're doing, but wordsmithing stuff around what 99.5% of users of Switch emulators actually do (i.e. download Switch games that should be paid for for free from somewhere that isn't Nintendo) just doesn't meet my seriously?-meter on the right side. I think it'd be more honest to say: "Yeah, true, it would be nice if they'd just let things slide a little more, and I'm not one who doesn't pay for the games, but I'm aware that it's going on, so they're certainly not doing anything bad at Nintendo."
