I'm totally OK with small changes like this as long as the performance baseline does not change. This happens in the console world all the time, ports are removed, components are updated, etc... It's fine.

    • @audigex
      @audigex Рік тому +13

Yeah I really don't think they should create a "slightly better" Deck, because it would potentially mean games would work on some but not other Deck consoles. Either release a properly upgraded Deck 2 or keep the same baseline target
Things like WiFi or hall sensor joysticks or something, no problem - they're nice to have but aren't a fundamental change

@@audigex yeah that's my feeling too. Deck 2 that's a lot more powerful would be fine in like 2 years but for now I think they should just release an OLED version or one that's got some extra modularity for tinkering/upgrading.

While I think it's silly to pine for a "more powerful Deck", I don't see a reason to hope it doesn't happen. People here are acting like they'd be magically compelled to buy whatever Valve releases. If you don't think a new one is necessary just don't buy it.

ROG ally and legion go COULD get more optimized, but I don't believe they're going to have anywhere near the dedication of support of the steam deck. Valve's magic is in the software, I'm perfectly content with the hardware as long as they keep refining an already fantastic device experience.

@Despicable_Gamer Pretty sure the only "modding" that isn't possible on Linux is FiveM for GTAV other then that the modding managers all work fine under Wine/Proton on Linux and thus 95% or even higher of modding should be quite doable on Linux. this includes newer and older games. Many games you can manually place the files where they need to be without using a mod manager of any kind. Yes I am a mod user. Can't play Diablo 2 without Median XL for example. There are a number of modules for the likes of Neverwinter Nights 1 and 2 that I can't do without either such as Dark Waters series for NWN2. I am sure if I were to install Dragon Age Origins I could likely get mods working on that on my Linux based laptop as well. So yeah using mods is NOT a pain on Linux in the slightest now if you are making mods that MIGHT be a different story tho but using ZERO issues here as yes it takes a little setup but it isn't that hard to do.

I like how the Valve goes with their long-term support for the Steamdeck. It gives it a much greater value than handhelds, that will have to be re-released every year or two to catch all the new, but still only incremental hardware trends.

I imagine they had to do a different model number to be able to comply with regulations for the new radio certification. Otherwise we've seen a few other minor changes to the Steam Deck since it's initial release, such as different fans, joysticks, SSDs, motherboard cover / shield, etc.

    • @colmustard5683

guy who said marked performance upgrade over better graphics is spot on. as someone once said, bigger numbers don't mean better when it comes graphics. targeting a larger player base vice the 5% who have high end gaming systems is also a good idea. why would anyone want to just sell to the 5% when there is another 95% out there with money to spend on games too?

I'd love to see a revival of Steam Boxes that can also do media and streaming apps for the living room. Steam OS certification for third-party handhelds would be pretty nice too - even if they're more powerful but meet the performance baseline, Valve and game devs can win on software sales.

This discussion was super interesting. I was in the boat that the deck feels a little on the slower side, with games like Jedi Survivor and Hogwart's Legacy and such being barely playable, but the argument about limited hardware pushing optimization into the priorities is very good. We all know how Doom Eternal looks and runs so if it's prioritized it's possible.
That said I'd like the performance target to be at least 800p 40fps on medium settings for modern games (also feels like that was the case when the deck came out but not anymore), what's a total bummer is when we can't get constant 30 at lowest settings which seems to be happening more often these days

It's good to push the top end of the graphics settings, but yeah it would be great for PCs to become a little more "generational" in terms of the baseline, and something like the Steam Deck (and a matching Steam Machine possibly) each "generation" would give a performance target that you know would be viable for a few years, meaning people could be much more confident buying a low end or mid range PC
That still leaves all the headroom at the top end for people to chase astonishing graphics at 4K 144Hz with their high end hardware, but opens the market way up

In order for the deck to become the “Target hardware” for most developers. They have to stick to their guns on how often they update the APU for the device.. There are 2 major reasons for this
    1. I’m a part time dev and I’m working on a game now. So If I know the deck is here to stay I can make that my target for performance. Not only that when they do decide to release the deck 2, I will be feel comfortable making that the target for hardware specs because I would assume it will be around for a while.
    2. Popularity matters. The longer something has to breath on the market the more it can penetrate. As a developer If I know the deck is popular and that there is only one model for a while. I can feel comfortable in making it my target for hardware. This is also the reason apple devices are easier on devs than Android. It’s also the reason you seen the shift in Developers targeting consoles first. That limit on hardware skews makes for easier development especially with games.

I bought my Steam Deck three weeks ago and loving it. And I love that it's already customizable/ repairable. I can see the point of people being afraid to do those upgrades themselves but I hope that Valve is going for both a DIY kit for any upgrade they're planning as well as fully assembled version. At least it reduces unnecessary waste as our waste management or companies are there yet to recycle them properly...

Upgrade when RDNA 4/Zen 6/LPDDR6 are available and order a custom VRR OLED screen. That is a big upgrade worthy of a jump to the users. For the time being, releasing a better screen model as a refresh would be great, as tge screen on the deck is horrible. While internet slows to a crawl for everyone else in the house my steam deck downloads games (huge ones too) in seconds to a bit under an hour depending on the size of the game. And I've downloaded darktide in about an hour and 5 minutes. Can someone tell me how to slow it down so I can finally play online with my friends?

Tweaking the current model is totally fine as long as it doesn't really affect performance. The Steam Deck 2 should feel like a big boost in overall performance while still remaining energy effecient. There's absolutely no need to rush it, and I wouldn't want them to. Having a baseline is nice, and I think the next Deck should ideally come out around the time next generation consoles are on the way.

Or should I mention Starfield where DXVK developer wrote big explanation on how Starfiled engine is abusing some DirectX calls which makes the graphical performance tank... and that's also way over $200m+ game. SteamDeck with XBox Series S are yet only two devices which are still demanding proper game optimization without DLSS escape route, and I don't think we should upgrade either.

Devs complain about being forced to target the Xbox Series S, however if Microsoft release a handheld in 2025 that targets 1080p they will have all the games optimized for the Series S available. 60 fps is just fine for portable gaming.

I agree that they should try to release an updated Steam deck every 2 years. This would allow people to cycle every 4 years and always be able to play the most taxing games with reduced setting the third and fourth year. This ALSO allows new customers to come in and buy the newest release and feel like they'll get at least 3 years out of it and can upgrade in 2 years if they want. For someone like myself who has not bought a Steam deck I'm in a boat where if I buy one now I'll be able to play the current most taxing games with reduced setting straight out of the box AND some games many not be playable next year or year after, so I'll be forced to buy another Steam deck in 2 years. This would never be a problem for future customers with a 2 year rotation. It's enough time for the hardware to advance performance. They can still have their baseline performance for each model.
When I buy or build a new pc I don't ask for the parts that will make the best games almost playable at reduced settings and mostly obsolete in a year or 2, why would I want that from a Steam deck? Life is short, I'd rather pay for performance than wait in/on games.

Even the screen is really good by comparison with ally, I don't like the "oversaturated" tone of the asus, with fluo +++ greens and reds that bleed over white inscriptions. For example , I can't barely read the "play" inscription in the green box on steam, color balance and tone is just more accurate and natural on the deck for me (steamOS 3.5, sRGB and 6500K color gamut)
And in the 15watts range SD crushes the ally, tested on numerous titles, it's a no match...
And (sadly) since the 323 bios update it's even noisier than the deck, with high pitched fan noise (wich we can't lower under 74% at 60°C now), getting past 20 watts it's like having a ps4 in hands, very disapointing for me because the silence was one of the main advantage of the ally to me...now just VRR staying the real "plus" of the device, thinking of returning it now next week...

Anyone that is lazy enough to download games (unless you are traveling and want a new game in the field.... even so...) over WiFi instead of purchasing a proper dock (Valve or 3rd pty) to take advantage of hard wire transfer speeds direct to router is on them. Now... that being said.... Bluetooth 5.2 allowing for multiple connections from other devices.... THIS makes me a little moist. I love the idea of being able to listen, control on the fly and even adding new artists to my Spotify with my Android while playing games. My argument may be selfish and niche at best, but if anything that Bluetooth 5.2 does sound like it would be a QOL upgrade!

Man... I'm in a tough spot right now on an opinion basis. While the Steam Deck allowed me to rediscover my library, it also made me pursue a modern 'steam machine', that permanently resides by my TV. Now, I'm usually using the deck on road trips, or around the house on Xcloud or steam remote play. Now I'm thinking about XCloud on Samsung tvs... Kinda wild.
I support reducing production & support costs. They have a foothold... they're waking people up. It's all good.

For me, the biggest reason I fear another Steam Deck is that valve will either have to cater to two of them (shader cache, verified games etc) likely lowering the speed at which they’re focusing and working on each one individually or even worse, discontinue the old one.
I look forward to another Steam Deck as I would buy it in a heartbeat, but that’s mainly because I use it for my daily driver alongside my Switch. SteamOS is a great addition to the deck and likely will be in their next iteration (can’t say the same for another after that because Valve don’t like the number 3). I hope they continue to improve on SteamOS moreover than another revision.
I tried out SteamOS 3.5 (preview branch) and they’re delivering on everything, going above and beyond for even simple things like how vivid the colours on your screen are without having to use third party alternatives.
Unfortunately, for me at least, 3.5 leaves a lot to be desired as it completely broke one of my games (Black Ops III) where you simply can’t load into a game multiplayer, or zombies 90ish percent of the time, so I’ve had to go back to stable for now.
If people know how I report such things to valve, please reply and let me know, their support told me to go onto the proton GitHub but proton isn’t the issue. It’s the OS itself.

I cannot disagree anymore with the idea that waiting 2-3 years for upgrades is a good idea. Tech products only relevant for 3-5 years, the longer its been on the shelf the shorter its life. With any luck the Steam Deck v1 will be relevant for 7 years. That means someone buying it today will get almost 2 less years of life out of it vs someone buying it in Q1 2022. Where if Valve did spec updates every 1-2 years someone buying the Deck today would get a better Deck that I did but would have it for the same amount of time.
This is way to similar to the Apple process where they release a model every year and a group of people think you are expected to buy the new iPhone every time its announced... My iPhone 12 is only 2 years old, but it is 3 years old to market. Meaning I only have another 1-2 years before the spec gap is so large that its worth upgrading, if I had got my phone in Sept 2021 instead of July 2021 I would have had a iPhone 13 and I could hang onto it until the 17 is out...

Valve doing the "Push older hardware as long as possible" approach is a nice change from everything else. Im sure they can focus on optimizing the hardware, having default "deck" settings for games where theure optimized for best frames to visuals etc. Lots they can still do. Look at the Intel Arc card as an example of what software updates can do.

I'm not a "handhelds" youtuber who's job is to get around this theme and I want to spend money on different things than handhelds and consoles. It would be better to see a generational leap when the next Steam Deck comes out. 2025-2026 would be okay. Also, if it would update every 2-3 years, performance increase would not be great.
