      Many "reviewers" are usually paid to say good things and gloss over the bad.
      This guy seems more legit than 95% of them, though I'm sure he'll have to buy his own for review in future instead of having them sent for free before retail launch from many of those companies who pay for positive exposure.

      @@LegionIscariot not denying it being a good product. I think a lot, if not most reviewers are too afraid to bring up it's faults. No handheld PC is gonna be perfect. This is great. However in the next in-depth review video, we need The Phawx to provide some insights into the speakers, and screen tearing w/o VRR. Personally I haven't experienced any tearing on the Go, as an existing rog ally user. However as a lot of people mentioned, the speakers on Legion Go suck. This is the main reason that I haven't decided to keep the Legion Go but not the ally.

    • @FoxbatStargazer
      @FoxbatStargazer 6 місяців тому +5

      Vsync solves screen tearing, that’s not the main reason for VRR. VRR gives you maximum smoothness at an unstable framerate. Non-VRR makes frame fluctations far more noticible, which is why devs shoot for caps like 30, 60 etc.

    • @user-xp5ux3bs8v
      @user-xp5ux3bs8v 6 місяців тому +1

      @@FoxbatStargazer
      I think you are wrong. Vsync solves screen tearing but in doing so it adds latency, especially with triple buffering and also produces inconsistency in the frequency with which frames are displayed (we can also call it a lack of smoothness) especially with double buffering.
      VRR, nothing more and nothing less, solves the tearing problem without adding these problems. Which is very good but does not help with the lack of smoothness produced for other reasons.
      With displays with a high refresh rate, as is the case, using Vsync and triplebuffering (or render ahead) adds little latency and is constant. The frequency at which the frames are displayed, at least for its part, is also regular so the final result subjectively should be very close to VRR. The problem is that refreshing the screen at 144Hz wastes somewhat more power than doing it at 60Hz.

Thanks for confirming that this was the only solution. Guess I'll have to return this card for a 4060 (same price) or spend more for a 4070. @ThePawx the problem about the resolution is NOT ABOUT NOT HAVING A LANDSCAPE PANEL, it's due to improper/missing edid information!
    This is like the old times, with the 16:10 screens (1680x1050) or exactly the same as with the steamdeck in windows:
    As there are no proper 16:9 resolutions added to the EDID information of the screen (and probably in drivers too), any old game (or with an old/strange engine, like visual novels) will crash, display rubbish or show a black screen.
    It's exactly the same thing that happened to me with the SD in windows. The same thing: LACK OF RESOLUTIONS ON THE PANEL.
    It should have all 16:9 and 5:4, simply for compatibility, showing black bands.
    Lenovo... those guys are just idiots.

    This is the first windows handheld that meets my requirements. Must be windows, check. Must have right side touchpad for mouse control - check. It's a bit bulky but it does have what I need for my gog point n clicks, and my pinball emporium virtual pinball tables, and a nice option if I want to sign up for gamepass from time to time.

    Does the z1e driver issue you mentioned apply if you run Linux or would that allow hot swapping between the z1e internal gpu and a thunderbolt AMD gpu without the same driver reinstallation every time?

    Definitely made the right choice on skipping the 6800u gen of windows handhelds, everything was underwhelming and overpriced
    It finally feels like we're getting decent competition and alternatives
    I'm pretty happy with my Steam Deck but the Legion Go seems very very tempting

    4:00 , I didn't think about the issue between AMD Z1E drivers VS AMD eGPU drivers, I wanted to buy a 6700XT + OneDock for my ROG Ally, I guess I'll go Nvidia 😢. The 6700XT was such a good price for 12Gb VRAM, perf similar to 4060 Ti 16Gb, etc.

    Thanks for such an indepth video. Very informative. I ended up ordering the Lenovo Go after seing your video.
    I'm trying to deicde what egpu solution to go with. Maybe you can help narrow down my decision, and probably help out others who are in the same boat?
    Is the driver problems with using AMD egpu still a an issue?
    I know amd GPUs are a little cheaper priced then Nvidia, but im leaning towards Nvidia aince AMD doesnt handle ray tracing very well.
    The GDP G1 is extremely expensive to buy in canada. It is also a laptop based gpu so doesnt perform as well as a desk top one right?
    With that has my baseline information, this is what im thinking and need help narrowing down please.
    Im thinking of going with a razor core x egpu and a rtx 3080ti. (Both available used locally. ) would cost me 400$less then a GDP G1. Would give me ray tracing and play cyberpunk 2077 at high settings. Would that set up provide more fps at higher settings?
    I did also find a 2060, and 3070 for substantially lower price used.
    Im lastly questioning the gpu's ability to perform with the usbc constraints . I don't want to be installing a Lamborghini engine in a pinto!
    If you could help me with this information, I'd be greatly appreciative.
    Thanks

      Hell, Lenovo themselves should just sell these separately (with a dock to charge them without needing the full handheld), presumably since they work wirelessly it's just Bluetooth or essentially a USB dongle built in (like a Logitech Unifying receiver) so it likely wouldn't be that hard to package it separately as long as they made an alternative way to charge them.

    What a huge difference from other reviews that only focus on features but not on the actual real life user experience and how it feels to actually use it, all the while going into detail on some specs along the way. Very well done! I hope in the full review you can really stress test it as a lot of the issues the Ally had reviewers didnt highlight until ppl had already spent money

    Hmm, must try this driver problem with AMD eGPUs once my Legion Go gets here (it is delayed in Europe). It should be possible to manually install latest AMD Radeon 780M drivers for the SoC and proper drivers (i.e. 7600M XT for GPD G1) for eGPU.

      It never fails to crack me up how graphics driver support for these devices is better in Linux-I just checked, and Phoronix reports the Z1E on the Ally working fine in Mesa 23.0 (amdgpu or RADV), which means most Linux distros will work out of the box
